    They don't even bring up the point of the book each character represents a part of society Steinbeck wrote this as a allegory Lennie represents The mentally disabled Curly represents everything wrong with society Crooks represents minorities Slim is said to be based off of Steinbeck personally as a heroine type figure Curlys wife represents over specialized women while George is just your average guy and when he finally shoots Lennie at the end of the book it's him giving into the rest of society a lot of comments are saying this book was boring but you had to look a lot deeper into the meaning just like my 9th grade Honors teacher taught us nothing it literature is a mistake Steinbeck gets so in depth describing a simple game of solitaire to represent loneliness friendship is a factor to the story but George and Lennie have a Parent-Kid relationship more than a friendship that is why the main theme is loneliness this video just shows you what you need to get a C grade

  • @morphman86

    A note I think you missed was the "hidden message" behind the book. It is explained in the forewords of the novella.
    This is the thing that I think gives the story its greatest "punch"!
    The story is about friendship and hardship on the surface, but if you look beneath it all, it's really about dreams and how they can never really come true, no matter how hard you work for it. Just like mice can never really master men, men can never really master their own situation.
    Everything in the story is a symbol for this: Lenny is the dream, George the reality. Candy is the dream Lenny strived for, but the reality of Lenny's hardships in life smashed that dream. Lenny's innocence was George's dream, and by his own hands and the situation he couldn't control himself, he had to end that dream.
    You can never change who you are beneath the surface, no matter how hard you try.
    Granted, I don't really believe in that message, but that is what Steinbeck saw when he lived through the Depression, when he had the same dreams and constantly saw them smashed by his own situation.

    • @RenewingTorah
      @RenewingTorah 10 лет назад

      I read the book years ago, but I'm sure I didn't read the forward. That just made this story that much more depressing. But I still love the story!

    • @alolkoydesigns
      @alolkoydesigns Год назад

      In the context of the situation it is true. Lenny in particular was in a no win situation. George actually could have continued his plan and moved forward with Candy assuming he didn't lose his job. A lot of the theme is about power. Curley's power over the hands and his wife because of his inherent power from his father, his wife's power over the men because of her inherent power from Curly

    Of Mice and Men speaks to me personally because my brother is mentally challenged. Though quite independent and capable of most things (doing his laundry, knows how to make a sandwich for lunch, bathing and shaving etc) he has many qualities similar to Lenny. Hopeful and dreams of big things for the future, and sometimes doesn't realize his own strength when he gets mad or upset. It's a great book. The truth of those dark times during hardship of money, friendship and social acceptance.

    George ever haunted by killing Lennie slowly goes mad telling people dark jokes about how he murdered his best friend. He eventually is put in an insane asylum where he is left all alone with his padded room and his jokes. The people who worked in the asylum called him "The Joker." In the 60's during renovations George escapes with never to be seen again. Or so the world thought.

    In the Lon Chaney Jr version, Lennies characteristics are merely stooge like and somewhat comical in some scenes. In the John Malkovich version, Lennie’s characteristics seem so real as being developmentally disabled.
    When Lon Chaney jrs character breaks Curly’s arm, his face shows a look of pure horror whereas Malkovich’s as he breaks Curly’s arm shows a look of pure rage. Chaney exclaims “You told me to George!” voice trembling with agitation while Malkovich exclaims the same quote wailing his eyes out like a hurt animal.
    Chaney killing off Curly’s wife didn’t have much of a struggle while Malkovich killing her off had a workout of struggle.

    I did this in school for an exam and we got the exact same extract in the trial exam as we did in the real exam a week later and I came out of it with a B :)

    We were made to read this book at school. I among millions of people would object to it being popular on fair grounds. When your teacher hands out nooks as one of a collection you must study, then that compulsory educational law should not be counted in the account of popular novels. At school I found the story boring, and when I watched the original movie, it made me sleep. But on watching the 1992 movie, I suddenly change my mind. T
    I get the story now. Wish I had years ago. I may have chose that book, instead of "To Kill a Mocking Bird," for my exams.

    I've got my GCSE English exam tomorrow, this is a good help with information that I wouldn't have remembered and some new information. I have the York notes revision guide for this book and it has some really good information I definitely recommend it.

    This really brings me back to grade 9, when my Literature class read the novel and watched the 1992 movie. Great stuff!
    BTW, could you do a Top 10 Notes for John Milton's Paradise Lost?

    When the movie didn't include the final lines of the book. I was rather annoyed as they were so important. But the movie was great.
