When I was very young, I could not appreciate the appeal of Valentino or the other silent film actors (except for Chaplin and other comic actors). Valentino's slicked back hair ... no thanks. Now that I am older and have seen styles come and go, I am very much a fan!
He slicked it back because his hair had waves and he didn't like dealing with them. You can see in one of his early movies (sorry, I forget which one) his hair is slicked back but you can see the thicker hair with a slight curl at the back of his neck....the shot s from his left-rear side....
The sailor on deck with the big biceps at the 22-minute mark and in subsequent scenes is none other than GEORGE O'BRIEN, who soon became a star in his own right. George also doubled for Walton Long in the fall from the high mast after the fight with Valentino. O'Brien took the fall into the sea for Long.

Everywhere online, I'm reading scientists say we live in a computer generated simulation. If that's the case, where's the rewind button, please? I love everything about the 1920's & 1930's. The men are timelessly elegant and so classy! The cars have perfect lines. They had the best movie stars too! I must have pressed a wrong button and ended up in an alternate glitch! I thought films needed special cameras to be filmed in HD but, coming out this October, The Old Dark House 1932 has been restored to 4k blu-ray quality and it looks amazing! I wonder if they can do the same with Valentino and Lugosi's films? (Or should the question be: "WHEN?"!)

I'm actually very thankful this movie exists when quite a few of Rudy's movies are sadly lost. But I would LOVE to see this one restored to HD. There are some shots in this film that are highly washed out and can't really make out Valentino or Long's faces. Here's hoping!
That movie was fun. The music, which would have been chosen for this re-release, was sometimes wry. The heroine's use of her eyes made me think of Gloria Swanson's line in Sunset Boulevard, that they didn't need dialogue, they "had faces" back then.
I really enjoyed this film. Somewhat of a departure Valentino. But as always, he's wonderful in this film and so are the other cast members. Really like this story. I like the fact that the leading lady is similar to more of a modern woman in that she doesn't fit that eras typical woman portrayal. She was raised by a father who didn't mind that she learned how to be a good Seaman. Very much like the way my father was. I'm 68 years old and my father was born in this era but he raised me as a complete woman. Heavy emphasis on education and godly Behavior.
1922 must have been the last gasp of commercial sailing ships. What's really ironic about this movie is that Dorothy Dalton gets top billing. If she's remembered at all today its because she was in a movie with Valentino.
Disappointing. When i saw the publicity photos i thought it was a nice love story set on the docks. But it's the stereotype of the kidnapping sailor, the evil captain who wants to rape the girl, the feisty girl who nevertheless has to be saved, and the ordinary boy turned sailor. At times Valentino looks good, but his kind of almost monolithic acting ruins everything. For diehard Valentino fans only.

I´ve read it was Natacha Rambova who flattened his hair and waxed his eyebrows in order to make him more appealing. She really GOT IT.
