I know, right? Even in Gone With the Wind, when Clark Gable was supposed to cry after the death of his little girl, he didn't want to cry on film, thinking it would not be manly. So they filmed the scene without tears, and then Olivia DeHavilland, who was also in the scene, encouraged Clark to cry and he finally did. And of course, they used the crying version of the scene because it was so much more real. Heck, Rudy could do that so easily, at least it sure looks that way. He was Italian with a French mother, so I think emotions were much easier for him to access..... he was brilliant and I think he would have had a great career in films either as an actor, director or cameraman since he loved cameras -- he had many of them. so sad he died so young with never having even been in talkies, so that is all part of his mystique. It is hard NOT to make a mythic figure of him.

This poor beautiful man deserved better than to die like he did so young, so utterly isolated and lonely. You will say that he had thousands of people who loved him, but that is not entirely accurate. They loved the fantasy that he created for them, the image of the Latin Lover carved so perfectly with his incredible talent as an acter and his striking good looks. The pressure to constantly have to turn himself into that iconic Latin Lover and meet the expectations of those numerous fans every time he set foot out his door would break down anyone. Nothing is ever quite as lonely as being surrounded by people who bathe you in adoration as the public Persona with next to no one knowing the person you really are beneath the mask. All of us want the opportunity to be loved, cared about, be admired for who we are. The hero worship and unrealistic demands we put on our movie, sports, and music stars needs to come to an end. We need to remember that they may be more wealthy and well known than us, but they are still human with the same needs, same desires, and the same compacity to make mistakes and have faults as the rest of us. They should have the right to have their life away from the movie set be theirs and not have the public under the guise of the 2nd Amendment voyaeristicly watch their every move like a stalker would obsess over is prey. And if you think I am going to far with this, jump to any news sight right now and type in a celebrity name. Because even when they are not doing anything scandoulous, the media and even those with no more than a cell phone and being at the right place will push, push, and write, and read things into situations not there until they have manufactured a scandal for them before they then proceed to tear them down. This culture we have created has laid low to many lives. We DO NOT have the right to demand celebrities to be perfect at all times. TO demand that they must adhere to conditions and principles that they do not impose upon themselves. We don't have the right to destroy their lives out of our jealousy over their looks, their wealth, and their fame, nor the right to demand that we have total access to them and their lives and then hide behind the 2nd Amendment. They have the right to a private life, the right to be who they are within their own homes and when out with their friends or family. To not have their lives destroyed due to our obsessions and fantasies. If it were us that someone did this to we would not look so kindly upon it or write it off as the price of fame. Especially not when directly or indirectly it leads to death. May Rudy shine bright in the night sky at peace and happy at long last.

It was clear from his talk with HL Mencken whom he sought out during his last week's that he was seeking guidance from a "wiser" man. I found what Mencken wrote. Rudy felt his life was controlling him. Mencken also advised he should let the "powder puff" episode go but he couldn't. It wounded him deeply...I think the loss of his father at a young age, along with his never seeing his mother again before she died, left him emotionally homeless...his brother Alberto was no comfort. Mencken could see how unhappy he was. Rudy never made peace with himself...the last year of his life was especially tragic as he spiralled down drinking, womanizing, accidents...self-destructive...He never could connect with the help for his soul that he knew he needed...poor, beautiful man-child...
The part that made me mad about the whole situation is that two different film producers or heads of studios had million dollar policies out on him and they still didn’t bury him
Really good performance. Valentino was so elegant and gifted as an actor. His extraordinary looks overshadowed his talent. But in this movie he shows that he was able to play comedy, romance and drama. As the forebear of Rodrigo he is hilarious.

Pachelbel's Canon is the music. I know --those Marcel waves made women's hair look like cotton candy wrapped around their heads, and then add a wide hair band. Yik. So far from today's styles with shining hair and open faces. However, Rudy is gorgeous in this film -- his ability to change his expression from one of deep despair to frivolity in one nanosecond is amazing. Had he lived and been accepted in sound films, he had the ability to be like Cary Grant -- great in either serious or comedic roles. Imagine Rudy in Charade, for example. These few films we have of Rudy are tantalizing because we don't know what he would have done had he lived -- it is intriguing and provocative to speculate upon. I loved the way he carried himself, his bows, his expressive hands, his costumes -- suits with nipped in waists, always a soft felt fedora with wide ribbon band, wristwatches (he created the habit of wearing wristwatches -- previous to Valentino, men wore pocket watches.) He had body grace having been a dancer. He knew how to move; knowing what his childhood was like, he was probably a kinetic learner -- movement, activity, learning by doing rather than watching someone else do something. He loved nothing better than riding his horses in the Hollywood Hills or ripping apart his automobile engines. That was the real Valentino. Had he not been an actor he would have been in agriculture -- owing a farm or vineyard or raising animals.

I think you mean mesmerizing rather than memorizing. He was indeed gorgeous and you can't take your eyes off him. In the sheik movies he sometimes had to mug it up for the camera (probably the director had him do that); but in this film the acting is much more natural. I think Clark Gable had that hypnotic quality too. In GWTW, in the first closeup of him, the camera is up the stairs and Clark is at the base of the stairway and the camera zooms down onto him and that face and sly smile -- everyone in the theater just gasps (I saw it in college decades ago and the audience just gasped, a few hollered out Wow or what have you. James Dean was also like that -- you could not take your eyes off him. There are actors like that that "the camera just loves". Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Karl Malden, Paul Newman, etc. Everyone fades into the background while they are onscreen because their faces express emotion nakedly and honestly without mugging it up.

Not sure if I can listen to the music all day...does get redundant BUT Valentino is excellent. COBRA is so lyrical & delicately done. Not like THE SHEIK or THE EAGLE...bit more serious. One of his most under rated work.....

This seems a bit tame after Monsieur Beaucaire. I guess they had a to do a more standard film afterwards because Monsieur Beaucaire wasn't well received by audience and critics. Rudolph is great in this as usual ❤

It does get annoying after awhile. Just turn off the sound. One or two of his films have musical scores written for the films, but I don't know when those were done; probably not for original showings in movie theaters of the time.

The movie on DVD has much better music. The music on here is slow and monotonous. This is one of my favorite Valentino films, but I just could not watch it on RUclips with this music. I'll stick to DVD. Thanks, anyway for trying.
