    Early San Francisco did have some rough times. I guess it won an Academy Award as a historically accurate film. There was a gang that bullied everyone until the city (really just a town) got organized and ended it. Although filmed in 1935, the wisdom of 1849 applies today; "Someone has to tell the people of San Francisco that you can't have a city without law and order." Thanks for uploading this wonderful old film.

    Bette Davis must have been very jealous of Miriam Hopkins having turned some of the best performances of the 1930's.
    Miriam Hopkins left an indelible mark on cinema especially with her earlier Academy Award nomination for the first 3-Strip Technicolor film, "Becky Sharp".
    Miriam Hopkins was one of the most versatile Actresses in Hollywood and in the process was Ernst Lubitsch's favorite Actress.

    Best performance by Hopkins that I've seen. "I grew up in a bell jar with forget-me-nots in my hair." I Googled it immediately and got nothing. McCrae explained who she was meant way more than her hardscrabble background. Hopkins and Robinson were both great in angry confrontation. Hopkins: "I wish I could tell you something that would make you howl and shoot!"

    As one would expect in a Samuel Goldwyn film; excellent cast, crew and direction under Howard Hawks. Goldwyn made many films, financed them himself and released them himself, or through United Artists. After his problems with Paramount and Goldwyn Pictures (pre-MGM), he had no trust in the New York moneymen who financed the studios.

    David Niven said in an interview that this movie was his "big break", where he's thrown out of a window and says "All right, I'll go." But I didn't see that scene anywhere in the movie. Let me know if and where you find it.

    • @Nekron99OMG
      @Nekron99OMG 4 месяца назад +1

      Is is possible that Niven was referencing (loosely) the scene @13:34? That appears to be the only scene close to what he describes. The character has a british accent (I can't tell if it's a cockney accent) and is being thrown out of a brothel (but not thrown through the window), and the dialog is different from what Niven reported in the Michael Parkinson Show interview. But perhaps he was remembering rather loosely.

    THE TERNDERLOIN of today is the new Barbary Coast !!! Been that way since the late 1980s ...maybe since the late 1890s when the name was originating from the turf s / turd s street cops who were all on the take - and only by thru that way could afford to buy a tenderloin steak to each family member. So the story goes. Today the whole city is on the take in the matter of not doin anything to solve the drug-related abnormality.

      “ Old Fart “? No class ! But it’s obvious you feel your on a important mission, how many have you saved w your messages each chance you get ? Do you keep up ? If you had the Holy Spirit, it could & would be sensed, but your full of fear, and you are wo testimony, this is not what you seem to understand, or believe it is. Proclamation, of the gossip, is not, cast out, like pearls bf swine, waste , we can read your excitement, and make lots of guesses, and you are getting attention, not Christ, in your life. So I suggest, you study the word more, and be still awhile until, you’re filled to more productive, Proclamation, about The Lord in your life. You basically ragged people, younger than you, and seem to believe your old and wise, but there’s plenty older than your hippie generation, isn’t it that true? Or don’t you know ? Do you really know love brother ? Show it, don’t type, wo witnesses, who knows you, here ? You could be some lonely weriodo drunk, is that not a possibility? All things are possible. So your desire to shine light is Commendable, however, you don’t walk in a room where some are sleeping, w a big lantern, nor a theater, or interrupt a dinner party, to get on a stump, I hope you understand. If you want to share your light and give a testimony, go into a park where homeless, are, or on the corner where drugs are being sold, and used, or a mission, or visit a jail or prison, or many churches. Or stand down town and shout it out! But have the courage to show your physical self, and share why you have light and care to give it. Bless you, and I thank my Lord for it,amen. PS old fart, may be kinda cute or funny to you, but in the seriousness about souls, it’s rather crude, just saying! Haha, don’t be too sensitive, but it’s not a child’s play, when I was I did, but when I became an adult ( man) in kings version. Keep reading , it sharpens your sword 🗡.
