    This is one of "Randolph Scott's" finest westerns. He was one of my dads favorite western actors. We used to watch this movie together. When I need to feel close to my dad (Rest In Peace, daddy) I watch this movie. It warms my heart and brings back some of my best memories. Strange as it may seem my dad looked like "Mr. Scott". (Needless to say my dad was a truly handsome man.)

    This was Jamse Coburn's film debut. He impressed Randolph Scott so much, the star put in a good word for him to John Sturges, who would eventually hire Coburn to play Brett in "The Magnficent Seven." This role helped to open the door to a successful career for Mr. Coburn. By the way " Ride Lonesome" is a helleva Western partners.

    Excellent cast, featuring the old school Randolph Scott, still making out despite the meteoric rise of John Wayne; and a juvenile James Coburn standing in the shadow of an undervalued Purnell Roberts (who got a regular paycheque from TV's Bonanza"), not to mention a fairly token Lee Van Cleef, doing his everyday bad guy stuff. Superb locations and a still crisp and clear colour print. Well worth a watch and thanks for sharing...

    A beautifully crafted Western with some of the best long-shots I've ever seen in this genre. I love the rhythm and pace of the editing; it's one superb frame after another. A great opening scene establishes the plot and we are slowly introduced to some marvellous characters. The music, particularly in the early scenes, creates wonderful atmosphere. The cast is very strong and it's a great movie debut for James Coburn. Karen Steele really stands out too and is a little more than the token female 'object' of male desire. I could've done without the melodramatic final scene but it doesn't spoil one of the finest Westerns ever made. Thankyou for sharing it with us.

    Probably Scott's best and a Western that should be up there with John Wayne's. The dark and macabre secret of the hanging tree is not something you usually find in lightweight Scott westerns. The interplay between Scott and his friendly compatriots who tell him openly theyre going to kill him at some point is beautifully played.

      Perhaps, but it strikes me as illogical. If Sam killed Brigade, he could not get amnesty. Nobody gets amnesty for murder; he couldn't be that stupid, could he?
      Another illogical plot point is Frank's long ago hanging of Brigade's wife on the hanging tree. Actor Lee Van Cleef plays Frank in a relatively thoughtful and deliberative manner (except for that line about "forgetting" hanging Brigade's wife, which I fine incredible), resulting in we the audience being unable to completely suspend disbelief that Frank would have had a motive sufficiently malevolent enough to commit such an act of unbridled savagery.
      I think this narrative patchiness could have been tightened up with a flashback that showed how wild and crazed Frank actually was at the time. Just consider the cinematic bonus you would attain by showing a psychopathic, misogynistic Frank sadistically hanging Brigade's wife, when the hanging tree was healthy and alive; THAT would have been a powerful scene.
      It's also worth noting that the running time of RIDE LONESOME is so brief (73 minutes), adding another five or six minutes for this flashback would not have affected the pacing of the film at all. RIDE LONESOME could have been a classic Western at the top of the heap, but it falls a little short due to implausible plot points, IMHO.

    • @mfrost71w
      @mfrost71w 8 месяцев назад

      @@GH3K3 Sam killing Brigade isn't a problem for me initially - the only other person there at first (besides Billy) is Whit and they're in the middle of nowhere - they could easily have killed Brigade with no-one the wiser. The plot hole arises when Mrs Lane comes along. Sam and Whit would have to get rid of her too, though it seems Sam is open with her because he's convinced she, a woman without a man, will come along with him and Whit to the ranch, regardless.
      Also of course, Sam says he's going to take Brigade head on and we all know that a quick draw gunfight in Westerns isn't against the law. He'd have Whit, Mrs Lane and Billy to attest it was a fair fight.
      I think the film does well enough to imply the evilness of Frank. Forgetting about the hanging is mere bluster because earlier he says to the gang that he knows where Brigade is going (the hanging tree) because of a wrong he did him long ago.

    Pernell played his beautiful azz off. James Best wasn't far behind.When Pernell first walked out at 9:20, I almost passed out.

      What happened to the characters after???
      Obviously, Billy John got stretched. Did Boone and Whit follow thru and build that ranch? I imagine Ms. Lane landed another husband pretty quick...in-town this time. And Brigade? He's still ridin the land all over, looking for another lost soul.
