I believe she works for a legal aid nonprofit. The organization provides services pro bono. She receives a paycheck. My father started his legal career working for such an organization. However, later in his career he did do an awful lot of work pro bono. The clients were poor and he knew that it would be doubtful if he was ever going to be paid. Two things struck me was that seldom did a client thank him, whether he won their case or not. The second thing was that though he was a trial lawyer for over fifty years, though he was actively involved in many volunteer organizations over the decades, though he did so much work pro bono, few people came to his wake or funeral.

I live in Louisville, KY and Cassie came to my door a few years ago. She was then running for Metro Council. She won my vote and enough others to get where she is today. Kentucky seems to be totally Red, but with Cassie and Andy Beashear we may be able to move the country in a progressive direction.

As a lifelong resident of a Blue State where women do have control to make decisions for ourselves regarding reproductive rights...I hope a majority of voters in Kentucky change their political minds and make an attempt to vote Democrat so they can fight for themselves and their own rights to decide their own reproductive fates. Children learn domestic violence at home. Forcing children to remain in a family with an abusive parent is insane. And completely wrong. 1950's thought.
My grandmother left my abusive grandfather and got a divorce in the 30s, maybe early 40s and it probably saved her life and curtailed the terror my mom and her brothers lived with.
This is the reason that are programs in place to help. And it is still dangerous to leave a violent partner. It sounds like he doesn't want it to help women to leave a dangerous environment.

Cassie was my city council member before being elected to the state legislature. She is the finest person and boldest progressive. I hope she, not the faux Appalachian Vance, is heard by the nation on this, and more importantly, is heard on all the issues.
@@marysharvey Indeed. I first had contact with Cassie as she was a member of our Louisville Metro Council when I reported a pile of trash in a public space near my home. Basic, non-ideological government service required. And even though she was running hard for State Senator, she got a cleanup crew together and the crew took care of it. (I have before and after pics to back that up.) I started looking into who Cassie was and was amazed.
Leaving an abusive marriage also sets a valuable bar of respect for your children. In creating this boundary you give your children permission to take care of themselves and take their power back should they need to one day.
You cannot be in an abusive, dysfunctional relationship without being dysfunctional, yourself. It's better to leave and give your children 1 stable, functioning parent than 2 dysfunctional parents. Model resiliency and hope, and teach your kids right from wrong. Don't model dysfunction- it is not beneficial to stay.

This was an excellent interview. Sen. Armstrong is very articulate and knowledgeable. She is the type of person we need more of as elected officials. Kudos to the interviewer as well. She pressed for a more direct and full answer to her questions when needed.
I grew up in isolated rural Alabama, in an abusive family. My siblings and myself fled as soon as we reached legal age. With massive sacrifice we are doctors, pilots, biologists, attorneys, moms and dads. "Family" is no fairy tale for many people. Vance equates poverty to lack of intelligence. Poverty leads to lack of opportunities. The "Bookmobile" that parked in the parking lot of a gas station nearby out home was a godsend to me and my siblings.
I grew up in that hate filled home. Books were the thing that showed possibilities through the chaos. Bookmobiles, awesome memory :) Thanks for sharing!

The best message I ever got from my mother was her leaving my dad after he beat her up and put her in the hospital! It gave me the strength and ability to not ever put up with mistreatment! My four daughters have all thanked me for my example of strength, which was really my mother’s passed to me! That’s three generations and another coming up who will not put up with violence against women!
Thank you for placing my late mother-in-law’s life in its proper context. At 15 years she walked into a local private school to ask for work in exchange for tuition. A year after graduating she was teaching the chemistry class. She later received a master’s degree in early childhood education. As a New England bride, all this was invisible to me. She was, according to her family, “a real pistol”.
My mother was raised in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee, and I can say in all honesty that her large family bears no resemblance to Vance's depictions of "hillbillies."
My mother's mother in the early 1940s wrote a letter to a private school because there was no grade 12 in Alberta's rural communities. She asked for free tuition for her daughter and the school offered my mother free tuition and board and room in exchange for work. My mother was taught to type and worked in the office and the kitchen. She later went into the military during World War 2 and was given 3 years of post-seondary education because of her military service. Men who had been overseas in WW2 got to stay in the Canadian military, but not the women. Those men who wanted a civilian job that fitted the skills they had learned in the military got it. Women, again, did not and, instead were offered a chance at a post-secondary education. However the stipend for board and room was not adequate so my mother dropped out after 2nd year and married my father. She had 4 children in quick succession. When we were all in school, she began her 3rd year of university by correspondence. She finished her degree when I going into grade 10. Back then, where there was a will, there was a way. Is that true today? High school has been really watered down and is under financed. University tuition is out of sight.

Extreme poverty prevents more women from achieving college degrees partly due to lack of healthcare and with that comes birth control . Jd Vance made friends with a billionaire that paid for his campaigns more than once . He shows how undereducated he is when he talks about women or men staying in an abusive marriage . It's funny when he, who had his sugar daddy/puppet master Thiel buy him all his "achievements" and old Donnie who had his actual daddy do the same for him say that Harris didn't earn her position.
OMG I had never considered this as a possibility, but of course, he literally could be the Manchurian Candidate but instead of for a country, for the policies that a very rich individual wants. This is frightening and well within the realm of possibility. Most politicians are bought off after they attain office, but in JDV’s case maybe he’s been groomed for this since college.
The big difference in their perspectives is the simple fact that Vance isn’t from Appalachia. She is from Appalachia. His views are a vacation view. He formed his opinions based on short visits to an area. You cannot possibly understand a place if you are only a visitor. Those of us who grew up and have generations deep roots here in Eastern Kentucky are a proud people who distrust those who will come and look down on our way of life. We know there are problems in our communities and we want to deal with them, but we do not appreciate outsiders judging us, or profiting from our experiences.

A surprising amount of KY seems to have been turning blue. I wonder if there's potential to break the red stronghold in the midwest outright, by implementing programs to build up social infrastructure all across the region. I've been wondering about the pros and cons of tapping Beshear for Vice lately, too. Losing Beshear short term would be rough, but maybe putting him in the VP seat and maybe eventually the presidency could actually be a winning strategy, giving Appalachians a strong voice at the very top whose track record is one of standing up for the people of the region.
Kentucky family here: they do feel just written off and abandoned. Being sincerely given needed resources, as she said to be able to help themselves (maybe by centering green jobs in the region to replace the coal and timber jobs lost) and treated with dignity and not knee jerk derision by Dems (sorry but true, I get mugged by that constantly by people "on my side"). There's so much potential there. I still remember exploring an old abandoned home in the 80s as a kid, and there was a framed picture of JFK in it. We bought into this red/blue divide and turned our backs on a purple state.

As long as no one calls it Democrat, liberal, leftist, socialist, or any of those other no-no words. But across the US, people consistently come out supporting more robust social safety nets and infrastructure and better rights for workers... But then party loyalty or biased media makes half of them vote in some two-bit grifter who runs on beating back the dirty commies or the illegals or the woke agenda (okay, maybe not so much the last one, but don't tell the MAGAs it isn't working). Seems to me like all the most rural places are actually ideal for setting up big investments in renewable energy and such, too. Lot of empty space where a wind farm or a solar array wouldn't have suburban nimbys to say no. Lot of places where factory work could be directed toward things like semiconductors, not overpriced and oversized cars sold on pure nostalgia and hype. Honestly, I want to see some kind of Southern progressive win big on a ticket and spend four years straight investing in just doing what people want anyway.

Don't get it at all. These labor movement supporters sidled up to trump must not have a clue how much screwing trump has done to construction labor contractors during his development career. There are thousands, 1000's that's right, of lawsuits against him for non-payment for service rendered. Anyone associated with Trump at this point is a buffoon at best, but most likely criminal or soon to be. It's unfathomable to me how any rural citizen could think trump could or would do anything to help them.
I congratulate Cassie for her wonderful work. I am an Australian and retired Social Worker and J D Vance’s attitude that women should stay in Domestic Violence situations is appalling. Women in these domestic violence situations, are already disempowered and traumatised by these experiences and children from these families suffer from Secondary Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. All women and children deserve THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN ENVIRONMENTS FREE FROM VIOLENCE , INTIMIDATION, AND ABUSE.

This was the most wise and insightful counter to JD Vance's self-serving narrative of cultural mis-appropriation to date. I wish she would interview widely on the news so as to put the real story of Appalachia and Kentucky out there in the public view.
My sister was in an abusive marriage and stayed for years until her girls went to college and I see the harm it did to all of them. Nightmares, PTSD, anxiety, not trusting on and on how damaging it was to all of them. Lots of counseling to try to be whole again. No one should stay in a relationship that is abusive, physically, emotionally, verbally. Shame on anyone that believes or supports that. Women have the right to be in a respectful healthy relationship and a role model of a healthy relationship or it sets the girls or boys up to be in an unhealthy relationship and repeat that behavior.
Coming from a similar background and having achieved similar academic success, Vance decided to tell a story about himself, but Chamber told stories of the collective. Vance chases money and power, Chamber quietly serves others. What a contrast of their character.
I heard that the law firm that she worked at until recently has on-site, free childcare. I’m guessing that’s who took care of their kids, or maybe a nanny. The hypocrisy of telling other women to be “trad wives” when his own wife clearly isn’t one is bonkers. But it appears that the entire GOP runs on its own hypocrisy.

Impressed by the interviewer and Stste Senator Chambers! Chambers speaks clearly about issues in.an understated way and what she says is very thoughtful. When the interviewer pushed her on a question or two she responded with great presence of mind and did dig deeper. Chambers kept stressing that Appalachia is more complicated and has more potential than many think and I loved that she described Vance's position toward Appalachia as a place to escape from bc he needs it to be to further his image! Good point as it can be extended to Trump and his dark vision of Anerica---he needs it to be dark so he can save it, HA! Good interview--

Vance is from Middletown, OH - a suburb between Cincinnati and Dayton. It’s not Appalachia. It has nice homes, restaurants, shopping, and I-75 runs through it. They have access to health care and good infrastructure. Folks in Appalachia don’t enjoy those benefits.
Kentuckian here. I credit the senator for her work and hope that many more like her will be elected here. But the very people she’s championing in Kentucky will walk over broken glass to vote for the Trump/Vance ticket, as well as every other crack pot Republican on the ballot. She vastly overestimates the Democratic Party’s chances here going forward. The Democratic Party of yesteryear was a very different creature than the party of today. Andy Beshear is likely to be the last Democratic governor here for years, maybe for my lifetime. And the circumstances of his election and reelection were unique. The people of eastern and southeastern Kentucky are their own worst enemies.
It is a big problem in our country: culture vs. facts. I wonder if Cassie would get a bigger voice and if we try to change the culture with marketing & messaging, maybe we can make an impact for Appalachia.

When I was in the sixth grade my parents announced they were getting a divorce. I was relieved, At that young age, I knew that my parents divorcing was a big deal but I Also, knew that it would put some distance between my dad and us And his physical abuse. He was verbally abusive to mother , but his physical abuse to us did come to an end with the divorce. In the 60s and 70s., you could get away with raging and beating your children with a belt for hours on end. Again , at the ripe young age of the sixth grade , I was relieved. I love my dad and he passed a few years ago but I am now 60 and frankly.I just don't miss him. It is sad but true his behavior broke us all. They owned businesses and were prominent in our community And I am so grateful my mother was able to divorce him... I often told my stepmother if she left him she could come live with me...
I'm an environmentalist, and want to get off fossil fuels, but I'll try to explain it from their perspective for voting Republicans. In Eastern Kentucky it boils down to coal and natural gas. Miners fought for over a century to get better pay and working conditions. Nowadays these jobs provide middle class wages for a regional economy desperate for money. So when Hillary Clinton says ”we're going to put coal miners out of work!" They feel like they have little choice, even when they themselves don't work in the coal industry. Democrats do well in the area when they bring roads, schools, hospitals, and Internet access to the area. (Sidenote Andy for VP)

The best message I ever got from my mother was her leaving my dad after he beat her up and put her in the hospital! It gave me the strength and ability to not ever put up with mistreatment! My four daughters have all thanked me for my example of strength, which was really my mother’s passed to me! That’s three generations and another coming up who will not put up with violence against women!

Thank you for placing my late mother-in-law’s life in its proper context. At 15 years she walked into a local private school to ask for work in exchange for tuition. A year after graduating she was teaching the chemistry class. She later received a master’s degree in early childhood education. As a New England bride, all this was invisible to me. She was, according to her family, “a real pistol”.
My mother was raised in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee, and I can say in all honesty that her large family bears no resemblance to Vance's depictions of "hillbillies."
My mother's mother in the early 1940s wrote a letter to a private school because there was no grade 12 in Alberta's rural communities. She asked for free tuition for her daughter and the school offered my mother free tuition and board and room in exchange for work. My mother was taught to type and worked in the office and the kitchen. She later went into the military during World War 2 and was given 3 years of post-seondary education because of her military service. Men who had been overseas in WW2 got to stay in the Canadian military, but not the women. Those men who wanted a civilian job that fitted the skills they had learned in the military got it. Women, again, did not and, instead were offered a chance at a post-secondary education. However the stipend for board and room was not adequate so my mother dropped out after 2nd year and married my father. She had 4 children in quick succession. When we were all in school, she began her 3rd year of university by correspondence. She finished her degree when I going into grade 10. Back then, where there was a will, there was a way. Is that true today? High school has been really watered down and is under financed. University tuition is out of sight.

I’m one of them!
The big difference in their perspectives is the simple fact that Vance isn’t from Appalachia. She is from Appalachia. His views are a vacation view. He formed his opinions based on short visits to an area. You cannot possibly understand a place if you are only a visitor. Those of us who grew up and have generations deep roots here in Eastern Kentucky are a proud people who distrust those who will come and look down on our way of life. We know there are problems in our communities and we want to deal with them, but we do not appreciate outsiders judging us, or profiting from our experiences.

A surprising amount of KY seems to have been turning blue. I wonder if there's potential to break the red stronghold in the midwest outright, by implementing programs to build up social infrastructure all across the region. I've been wondering about the pros and cons of tapping Beshear for Vice lately, too. Losing Beshear short term would be rough, but maybe putting him in the VP seat and maybe eventually the presidency could actually be a winning strategy, giving Appalachians a strong voice at the very top whose track record is one of standing up for the people of the region.
Kentucky family here: they do feel just written off and abandoned. Being sincerely given needed resources, as she said to be able to help themselves (maybe by centering green jobs in the region to replace the coal and timber jobs lost) and treated with dignity and not knee jerk derision by Dems (sorry but true, I get mugged by that constantly by people "on my side").
There's so much potential there. I still remember exploring an old abandoned home in the 80s as a kid, and there was a framed picture of JFK in it. We bought into this red/blue divide and turned our backs on a purple state.

As long as no one calls it Democrat, liberal, leftist, socialist, or any of those other no-no words. But across the US, people consistently come out supporting more robust social safety nets and infrastructure and better rights for workers... But then party loyalty or biased media makes half of them vote in some two-bit grifter who runs on beating back the dirty commies or the illegals or the woke agenda (okay, maybe not so much the last one, but don't tell the MAGAs it isn't working).
Seems to me like all the most rural places are actually ideal for setting up big investments in renewable energy and such, too. Lot of empty space where a wind farm or a solar array wouldn't have suburban nimbys to say no. Lot of places where factory work could be directed toward things like semiconductors, not overpriced and oversized cars sold on pure nostalgia and hype.
Honestly, I want to see some kind of Southern progressive win big on a ticket and spend four years straight investing in just doing what people want anyway.

Don't get it at all. These labor movement supporters sidled up to trump must not have a clue how much screwing trump has done to construction labor contractors during his development career. There are thousands, 1000's that's right, of lawsuits against him for non-payment for service rendered. Anyone associated with Trump at this point is a buffoon at best, but most likely criminal or soon to be. Women in these domestic violence situations, are already disempowered and traumatised by these experiences and children from these families suffer from Secondary Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. All women and children deserve THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN ENVIRONMENTS FREE FROM VIOLENCE , INTIMIDATION, AND ABUSE.

This was the most wise and insightful counter to JD Vance's self-serving narrative of cultural mis-appropriation to date. I wish she would interview widely on the news so as to put the real story of Appalachia and Kentucky out there in the public view.
My sister was in an abusive marriage and stayed for years until her girls went to college and I see the harm it did to all of them. Nightmares, PTSD, anxiety, not trusting on and on how damaging it was to all of them. Lots of counseling to try to be whole again. No one should stay in a relationship that is abusive, physically, emotionally, verbally. Shame on anyone that believes or supports that. Women have the right to be in a respectful healthy relationship and a role model of a healthy relationship or it sets the girls or boys up to be in an unhealthy relationship and repeat that behavior.

Coming from a similar background and having achieved similar academic success, Vance decided to tell a story about himself, but Chamber told stories of the collective. Vance chases money and power, Chamber quietly serves others. What a contrast of their character.

Impressed by the interviewer and Stste Senator Chambers! Chambers speaks clearly about issues in.an understated way and what she says is very thoughtful. When the interviewer pushed her on a question or two she responded with great presence of mind and did dig deeper. Chambers kept stressing that Appalachia is more complicated and has more potential than many think and I loved that she described Vance's position toward Appalachia as a place to escape from bc he needs it to be to further his image! Good point as it can be extended to Trump and his dark vision of Anerica---he needs it to be dark so he can save it, HA! Good interview--

Vance is from Middletown, OH - a suburb between Cincinnati and Dayton. It’s not Appalachia. It has nice homes, restaurants, shopping, and I-75 runs through it. They have access to health care and good infrastructure. Folks in Appalachia don’t enjoy those benefits.

Kentuckian here. I credit the senator for her work and hope that many more like her will be elected here. But the very people she’s championing in Kentucky will walk over broken glass to vote for the Trump/Vance ticket, as well as every other crack pot Republican on the ballot. She vastly overestimates the Democratic Party’s chances here going forward. The Democratic Party of yesteryear was a very different creature than the party of today. Andy Beshear is likely to be the last Democratic governor here for years, maybe for my lifetime. And the circumstances of his election and reelection were unique. The people of eastern and southeastern Kentucky are their own worst enemies.
It is a big problem in our country: culture vs. facts. I wonder if Cassie would get a bigger voice and if we try to change the culture with marketing & messaging, maybe we can make an impact for Appalachia.

When I was in the sixth grade my parents announced they were getting a divorce. I was relieved, At that young age, I knew that my parents divorcing was a big deal but I Also, knew that it would put some distance between my dad and us And his physical abuse. He was verbally abusive to mother , but his physical abuse to us did come to an end with the divorce. In the 60s and 70s., you could get away with raging and beating your children with a belt for hours on end. Again , at the ripe young age of the sixth grade , I was relieved. I love my dad and he passed a few years ago but I am now 60 and frankly.I just don't miss him. It is sad but true his behavior broke us all. They owned businesses and were prominent in our community And I am so grateful my mother was able to divorce him... I often told my stepmother if she left him she could come live with me...
I'm an environmentalist, and want to get off fossil fuels, but I'll try to explain it from their perspective for voting Republicans.
In Eastern Kentucky it boils down to coal and natural gas. Miners fought for over a century to get better pay and working conditions. Nowadays these jobs provide middle class wages for a regional economy desperate for money. So when Hillary Clinton says ”we're going to put coal miners out of work!" They feel like they have little choice, even when they themselves don't work in the coal industry.
Democrats do well in the area when they bring roads, schools, hospitals, and Internet access to the area.
