- As former president Donald Trump's second impeachment trial enters its third day, the question remains whether his words or actions incited the January 6 assault on the Capitol. But little attention has been paid to a video that was shown that same day, at the January 6 "March to Save America" rally in Washington, D.C. Jason Stanley, a scholar of fascist propaganda, claims that this short video -- shown immediately after Rudy Giuliani left the stage, prior to the attack on the Capitol -- was full of themes and tactics that threaten liberal democracy. Stanley breaks the video down with Hari Sreenivasan and elaborates on its role in the violence that took place on that infamous day.

This thing is not over yet and we cannot underestimate the situation. Remember, Hitler was actually jailed. Then he went on to take over and do all the horrible things that he did.

What happened in Germany in the 20's and 30's was like the perfect storm, where severe economic collapse and fears of communists taking over enabled Hitler's rise, aided by opportunism and luck. Trump doesn't have those conditions to gain control again, and in all likelihood he won't, but his cult-llike base will pose a serious threat for years to come, and one of his clones could run for office to wreak havock again. But maybe like the fizzling of the Bushes they will be unsuccessful.
And while Hitler was in jail, he wrote "Mein Kampf", which explicitly laid out his plans. What did Western leaders do about Hitler's plans? Appeased him. What have RepuGNican politicians done about tRUMP's many crimes and flirtation with treason? Protected him.

I took a class in undergrad legit called “nazis in cinema” and the prof with a similar background basically taught us ab the media structure and model of nazi film/propaganda and other fascist aesthetic. Triumph of the wills
The final scenes are stunning. Clip #1 shows a fallen soldier in a flag-covered casket being carried by his fellow soldiers. I see the glorification of the ultimate sacrifice, a patriot who is willing to give their life & gaining the respect of their brethren. Not for our country, but for Trump. Clip #2 at the end shows Trump, completely surrounded by a white glowing light, walking toward his followers. Definitely an attempt to portray Trump as a spiritual leader, godlike, with a mighty righteousness. Lastly, the choice of music...no patriotic march, no swelling strings to convey peace and bonding among Americans. It's an edgy, aggressive & forceful rock song which, in it's original version, targeted males and their frustrations with lyrics such as "it doesn't even matter how hard you try" and "in the end it doesn't even matter." Trump's spin doctors emphasizing the idea of the stolen election and targeting that frustration to turn it into violent retribution. Thank you for showing this video. Never saw it before.

Rick Steve's who hosts travel shows on public television has a very insightful show about Fascism and how it overtook Europe leading up to Hitler, Mussolini etc. It's very well done and should be shown to every student so they understand how this craziness starts and ends!

Already by July 18, 2020, as per their Twitter, Linkin Park served the Trump campaign with a cease and desist order demanding it stop using this song. It appears it was ignored. The band's action was in line with a Tweet by Chester from Jan 29, 2017 that included the statement "Trump is a greater threat to the USA than terrorism!!" The band, Tommee Profitt, that are performing the cover used by the campaign also expressed their disapproval.

I am relived to hear the insurrection being called an insurrection rather than the watered down reference which has been rampant in media calling the attempted overthrow a riot.

One of the truly horrific aspects of this episode, isn’t so much that many at the Elipse rally may have not been aware of its antisemitic character, but that Americans at large don’t grasp the extent to which dog-whistles of this sort absolutely DO resonate with far right-wing militancy. These dog-whistles have had strong direct efficacy as rallying themes for the far-right dating back decades. And here they are…out in the open…at a very public rally organized by attended by the President.
It should also be noted that this far-right fringe now has a new symbol that it has been rallying around for at least 15 years. That symbol is the AR-15 military style rifle, carried by dedicated US servicemen and woman. It is now been co-opted through aggressive state-of-the-art digital-age marketing and can be found in badges, flags, tee-shirts…you-name-it, throughout the most militant and fascist-leaning right-wing groups.

Apparently, they think people won't find out, as to what that new symbol means - at least for now...

Stanley speaks clearly and is able to keep his focus on the point he is trying to make, without sliding into irrelevancies or side issues. I agree with his analysis of what's happening in America, probably because I've studied fascism in depth and can easily see the similarities between the original fascists and the current crop.
I still don't see the mass mobilization in defense of democracy that I think is necessary to defeat American fascism; instead i see "leaders" working hard to make the old system work one more time, and failing because that system is disintegrating.
Pro democracy Americans are deeply reluctant to face the need for such a mobilization to begin right now; and stick with the usual stuff about the coming election, when their votes will, if they win, put an end to the rise of fascism and restore "normalcy", the usual political "bickering" and the ups and down of the election cycle.
Unfortunately, I believe that the usual methods are not up to the task, and have been superseded by "constitutional fascism", in which the fascist have figured out how to game the system, using the provisions of the Constitution and the laws derived from it to install an American version of fascism, complete with an infallible Leader and a violent movement devoted to him.
The second clip reminded me of images I have seen of Nazi rallies - it was very much on “the Leader”.
The third clip was very disturbing for a non-American.
I love seeing all of these old pieces being released right now, right when we need them to remind us of how horrible Trump was and how profound was his corruption and betrayal of his vow of office

This was a watered down version of the one that I saw in 2020. In that version there were lots of armageddon references referring to a second civil war that only Trump can save the USA. That was truly scary. I know the FBI must have been aware of these recruiting videos going around if somehow I saw it online.
