- In Hawaii, there’s no better way to say and share aloha than with a lei. The floral craft, which dates back to traditional times, may seem straightforward to outsiders, but it comes in many forms created across the Islands. Travel to the island of Oahu, where three master artisans want to introduce you to the lei’s vibrant past and thriving present.

I made hundreds of lei in the four years I lived in Hawai’i. I miss the tradition and the aloha so much. Thank you for the good memories!!!
That would be such a great gift for a loved one
Hawaii has a beautiful culture 🔥🔥🔥
my grandmother used to be one of those ladies in chinatown making leis. She's retired now and i havent been to one of those flower shops in a while but that clip of cindy's just gave me the most intense flashbacks. oh how i miss it.
I learned Lei making from my mom and she specialized in Haku Leis while my speciality is Ti-leaf but I just wanted to share about a superstition on Leis.
If you’re pregnant you can’t use a closed circle lei around your neck. It has to be open, meaning that the ends aren’t tied together. This is because of the superstition which states something like the umbilical cord might wrap around your child’s neck during birth
It's weird to hear my name too many times in this video 😂
LMAOO
Your name stands for Law in Spanish (Ley)
man, I miss seeing everyone at school with graduation leis. wish I could move back to hawaii someday.
Me too. Oh man - where you were did you do the graduation floaties with the leis?
Happy Hours I know my family did that for my sister
Ikr remember the May Day celebrations and all the hula dances in hawaiiana
In the Philippines student get some on graduations too.
As someone who lives on Hawaii this video was great! No one acknowledges that we exist. Just... try to say Hawai’i right the next time lol🙃
thisaccountdoesntexistorwuteva ikr
Sean B. I didn’t mean as some fantasy paradise. Hawai’i needs to be recognized for its true culture and depressing history.
thisaccountdoesntexistorwuteva thats the same point im trying to get everyone to know
No wonder it calmed down Stitch when Lilo put it on him.
its a Pacific island thing ! on my island when u arrive u are greeted with a lei. it means u are already part of us. & walking around with that lei is respect. also when leaving the island u will also be sent off with a lei. meaning u will always be welcome to come back again whenever!
*One day, I want to get **_Lei-d_** in Hawaii*
_Bob McCoy the fuq?😂😂
Nice seeing you again
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Oh. How clever. Never heard that one. 🙄
Yup that’s a Classic here
“Oh look, that tourist got lei-d”
(Everyone from Hawaii snickers but then moves on)
When we went to Hawaii I was a little bummed out that I didn’t get one :3
HOW
They literally lei you as you enter the airport.
Happy Hours no they didn’t. We flew Hawaiian airlines and nobody got anything. Just quarantined Incase tropical bugs were on the flight lol D:
@@ambycakes Oh wow 😂 Maybe they only do that on other flights. I know Hawaiian has a lot of local passengers, so that might be it.
I'm in Hawaii this very minute, we flew Hawaiian Air 6 strong, and we didn't get any Lei. Hawaii is very beautiful, the people and the far out picture perfect scenes with mountains, turquoise waters with the sun. Their beaches are no joke out here, very powerful waves, and undercurrents; we stopped at one and we're with kids and the life guard advised us for our own safety not to use it, but to drive further down for a much pleasant beach, and when we arrived, that beach had some less powerful waves too, but not as bad as the 1st one.
@@happyhours1961 Yeah I didn't get one and I flew Hawaiian airlines LOL kinda bummed
Hawaiian culture .is God's gift of peace and beauty to the rest of us, like me. Thank you for sharing 💚💜💙💛
Mahalo
First! I just wanna say I love your videos!
The spiritual symbolism is fascinating and beautiful.
Such a beautiful unique thing Hawaii has
Mahalo for putting our state in the spotlight!! Usually you don’t get to see these things highlighted in Hollywood, or put out famously like this!
This is RUclips it can be anywhere :)
Oh man is that Cindy’s??? Man I danced hula for 10 years, and that entire time my Halau went to and recommended Cindy’s.
I’ve since stopped dancing, but I still retain simple lei making skills and am jealous if you know how to make Haku Leis.
thank you for this. i'm not from the islands, but i have a deep connection. to give a lei for a special occasion, or to receive one means a lot to me. aloha!💗
aloha
Anyone here lives in Hawaii 🙋🏽♀️
Lanimoo 808 Representing Makiki to da fullest! 😁

This is very similar to the garlands and half-garlands, head ornaments that we Hindus wear during our religious ceremonies for the last 5000years. Never knew they were common in the west as well.
dude at graduations islanders be covered in leis 😂😂 it’s so funny to see them walking around with them
bitches be jealous lowkey though
Maalai = Tamil.... became shortcut "lei"...🤓🤣... global Tamil ☑️ garland...👍🙏💪👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
First time watching this... Just wanna stop....
Please remove the background music or make it quieter in the future. It's competing with the main audio.
VÍDEO MARAVILHOSO PARECE UM SONHO! BEIJINHOS E SUCESSO!
Pearly Shell......From the Ocean......🎶🎶🎶
I make flower ribbon leis for graduation. I discovered this channel just now and these fresh flower leis are amazing and not comparable with the ones that I make. Thank you for your inspiration !!!
I lived in Hawaii for 2 1/2 years. I never got a lei one time.
prolly because u were a haole?💀
2:03 Karen became the manager
I feel like one of the most famous things that have come from Hawaii are leis. At graduations on the mainland they’ll do it too sometimes
im local born in hawaii (idk if you are as well) but the difference i notice on the mainlands is that our graduations here is that you get lots of leis in hawaii that just go up to your neck and face and in the mainalnd i feel like its just 2 or 3 leis but thats okay? idk that's just what I also see and also I hope your safe !and aloha!
The China one. Really....
How long does a Lei last looking at its best?
Hristo Naydenov a day if you don't keep it in the refrigerator, if you do put it in the refrigerator I could last maybe a week
Those look a lot like the garlands that are put on Hindu deities in Hindu Temples. 🤔
And the Haku leis look a lot like some Ukrainian headpieces!
Lots of cultures have a history of making adornments out of flowers.
@DaPoplionParadise yeah I geuess
I just go AIRPORT...OR CHINA TOWN. SUPPORT LOCAL!
Love my pacific family, 💖beautiful culture still Alive in us💖
This thing thy u post are incredible
Floral,sweet, tactile, visual...
Lei means flower 🌼🌸 in manipuri language
Thank you for this story. I didn't know that there is so much more to a LEi than being a beautiful accessory. Now I know that each comes with a story, that it is created like a family. When I think of Hawaii, it was all about Hula, Pineapples and SPAM. What a wonderful eye opener!
Aside from hawaii Philippines also give some lay for speakers, guests, visitors before. I wanna know the origin or more of the story about it in the Philippines.
i love all of them. they are so beautiful! i love their culture and ohana spirit.
Soooo who is the Hawaiian in this deep slow mo video 😂😅
Great video! Thank you for sharing!
This would have to be the best smelling profession!
People who are allergic to pollen are shookt.

Leonardo Gras You say "I am Brazilian" or "I am from Brazil" :)
SUPERB! Mother Nature or God multifarious energies... Glory to the Almighty Lord
Non islanders...learn 🤦🏽♀️
i hate leis but you know
This video look like a parody. Every culture have their own wreath and here for 4 minutes they are talking how hawiian are amazing for no specific reason with inspirational music.
Beginning of the video could show what really Lei look like and that flowers on a string aren't true Lei, but they say they are, so deep meaning of 3:09 make me laught so hard :)
