    Solar Charge Controllers I recommend for most people: www.mobile-solarpower.com/solar-charge-controllers.html
    Other things I did not mention in the video:
    -night time, or stand by consumption, was .4-.6 watts for all the charge controllers, so I didn't mention it. The results were non conclusive and consistent for all of them.
    -the ability to overpanel is a huge feature! I wish I talked about this in the video. What it means is that if you exceed the power input rating, current wise, you will not destroy your controller. It will just produce whatever amperage its rated for. So lets say it has enough power to create 60 amps but its rated for only 40 amps, well it will only output 40 amps, and it will not be destroyed. I really like this feature and its in my BN series "favorite charge controller" listed above.
    Corrections:
    16:14 I switched the two numbers. I said the right numbers, but I didn't list them properly.

    So, when it is all said and done, all of the MPPT perform pretty much the same. And comparing a $200 40a charge controller to a 20A is pretty unfair. Look at the Renogy Rover 40a. it has larger wire connectors and a dedicated Lithium program.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 2 года назад

      In all honesty, although there's several design faults on the test! I believe it's pretty fair for a one guy, out of his pocket, show! ;-)
      With this said it's obvious these particular test conditions make the dirty cheap PWM stand out, way ahead of the competition! With a ROI that's sounds unbeatable! Because in fact the entire test conditions and limits are perfect for it!
      In the same line, the other competitors didn't had a chance to shine in their own departments. Either by functions or possibilities!
      There's still validity on all this. As a show case. Determining that in this particular conditions the PWM can indeed be a valid choice!
      What could be worth mention is that beyond this perfect PWM conditions. Price aside, it would probably be the worst possible choice! LOL 😂

    Damn - I just ordered a Renogy Rover (not delivered yet) and, like you, I believe in using the largest gauge wires possible which means 10 GA to the panels (10A max current) and 8 GA to the battery bank (40A max). I was a bit concerned about the wire terminals and now that I've seen your video I realize the Rich Solar controller is a much better choice. I'm happy Amazon has such a good return policy...
    Thanks for the review - you've just saved me some grief!

    • @nicksimon4536
      @nicksimon4536 4 года назад

      As handybob stated, thinner wires are a bad place to save money. Im gonna use #4 wiring for everything. Im considering using #2 wires from controller to battery bank. The shorter the wires are, the less resistance you will have, and you will want to keep your batteries as fully charged as possible at all times. Also, its important to keep positive and negative wires all the exact same length, or one wire will carry a higher load, especially when hooking the batteries together. I'm going to do this for my whole system., shortest wires possible, all the same length. I'm not sure if thats completely necessary but it makes sense to me so...

    • @RedwoodGeorge
      @RedwoodGeorge 4 года назад

      @@nicksimon4536 I'm running a pretty simple system - two SLA batteries with probably a max 5A working load though possibly a 40A charging current. The battery interconnects are 4 gauge while the system wiring is #8 to the controller and #10 to the distribution panel. I ended up using the EPEVER Tracer 60A MPPT controller which had no issues with the larger wiring.

Also the small was very important because i have teardrop and space is very valuable so anywhere i can cut down on size is pretty great. i also like to be able to see the charge stats while driving down the road via Bluetooth.

      I have had 10 75watt 12v panels daisychained to make 5 - 24volt output panel disharge for over 20 years, and used a cheap 12v/24v PWM controller for most of its life, till I got gifted a 50 Amp RV Power mppt controller and could finally clock amp output on cloudless sunny days at mid day and found my system was making 22 amps so may have been exceeding its capacity (prolly 20 amps).
      The 50 amp fragged itself so I am considering pushing the panels thru 2 cheap PWMs to lessen the load on each.

    Glad u mentioned that multiple chargers won’t “fight” each other. I want to add a few panels to my RV. If I’m not at camp and mama wants to run the generator for the microwave or air conditioner, I wondered what would happen when the A/C powered kicks in but senses the power from the solar panels. Which one would win or take over?

    Hey mate I hope you can answer this for me even though you kind of already have.
    I'm considering connecting a permanent panel to my vans roof that'll always be connected to the battery by its own charge controller.
    I also mainly want to use my portable panels to chase the sun, from what you've shown here quickly is that if they both run off of there own charge controllers and are both connected at the same time to the battery the battery will take regulated input from both panels meaning both panel set ups watt ratings will be joined and not fight each other, cancel out one another or cause damage to the battery?
    Say I have 100-150watts permanent on roof and 250-300 portable, completely different brands ect I'll still get a conjoined 400+watts from them in perfect conditions?

      Use Victron!
      The 100/20 reg he uses in the video is very small and most of things he complained about, are not an issue once you go to their bigger regulators.
      And you can plug in a display via the ve port on the bottom of the reg, or even a GX color screen that will take multiple Victron products.
      What solar array are you going to use?

    I think its important to also remember this test is done on products over the course of only a couple days. Anything should output somewhat evenly out of the box. But how does it perform over an extended length of time? I've replaced a LOT of 6-18mo old renogy controllers for a number of different reasons in solar systems in campervans, but have never had to replace a Victron. How do the outputs vary in hot climates? Cold climates? Still a great test to start with!

    Great video! One other very important test is the amount of RFI they put out. RF Hash that ruins emergency communication and Amateur radio reception. As well as Shortwave and standard broadcast AM. A simple test is to bring a portable AM radio into proximity with the equipment and note the amount of static that is generated from the device to the radio. An important factor when choosing a controller for communication setups. Thanks!

    • @gamersanonymous4me131

      In simple terms the controller allows solar panel output to run thru the controller and then output energy to the batteries. Assuming you have lead acid batteries or even liFePo you need to set the point at which the controller stops pushing power to the batteries OR....your lead acids will boil out the electrolyte and fail prematurely (past 27.5 v on a 24volt battery setup (the float limit), or 28. 5 v on a LiFePo setup or you can damage those depending on the battery). So it is a limiter to keep from destroying or harming your batteries.

      PWM best conditions are among others. Similar voltage in and out. The further away, one get from this, the bigger advantage a MMPT have on a given system!
      Example:
      - 12V nominal panel(s) to a 12V nominal battery, perfect condition for PWM!
      - 24V nominal panel(s) to a 24V nominal battery, still perfect for PWM
      Following similar example. 24v (36V or 48V...) panel to 12V battery, PWM not good at all! An MPPT would be way better on this condition! ;-)
      In other words if everything is perfectly matched the PWM perform quite decently , in fact the best ROI possible! (Return Of Investment).
      On the other hand step away from these perfect conditions. With dissimilar panels, voltages, partial shading, etc. that's MPPT territory! ;-)
      For a simple 12V or 24V system, it's a direct and simple hook up! Even the cheapest PWM controller shown here. Will automatically switch from 12 to 24V. Cheap simple and easy! ;-)

    What if your running 800 Watts of PV? You need 60A. A comparision of that level would be interesting because there is less incentive to make them cheap at that price point. I would like to see a nice mid range system test although the cheap end of the spectrum was also interesting.

  • @danieljackson9381
    @danieljackson9381 3 года назад +1

    What is the max power rating of each single panel? My research would suggest MPPT is more advantageous when there is more voltage, so a single panel test would not demonstrate the differences.. eg, if you measured each with 2 panels connected, parallel and series, the results would be even more interesting. Good review

  • @dmagyar00
    @dmagyar00 5 лет назад +17

    One comment, one request, and one suggestion. Comment: Great job on all of your videos! No wasting time with intros, fast paced, edited, info packed, pleasant delivery, and more, as per all the other comments. Request: Compare real world performance of 4 x 100 watt panels in series versus parallel. Series connections good for producing power early and late in the day when voltage would otherwise be insufficient to begin charging versus the performance drawback of not being in parallel. Good to know best solution on sunny day, on an overcast day, and a day with intermittent clouds. Suggestion: You use the word "cheap" to mean both poor quality and low cost. Although not necessarily confusing if the listener pauses to weigh context, there is no other word but "cheap" to represent poor quality, so that is the proper term. The word "inexpensive" is best for low cost.

    So the whole selling point that MPPT will charge 30% faster is not true? They charge,pretty much the same as pwm?

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 2 года назад

      NO, No, no! They both have their perfect spot for existence!
      Your very incorrect "30%" statement is as erroneous, as the conclusion regarding this test!
      Please do not assume things based on short and obviously incomplete information!
      This particular test was designed, by chance it seems, with the perfect conditions for a PWM controller! That's it! Nothing more, nothing less!
      Exactly the same way, the test that showed you the "30%", was designed to show that result! If there was intention on the design or not, that's whole different ball game! Most of this tests are made by amateurs, with a lot of chance involved. Instead of a lot of knowledge! This video is no different! Seems innocent enough!
      Well, than there are the pro's who really want to show you a specific result. And cook the test parameters to show you exactly that! ;-)
