I Don't Care About Points - A Narrated Purple Belt BJJ Match

- Submissions (especially at tournaments) are fun and exciting. Points are not. This match shows how little I cared about earning points. Since this tournament, I have paid more attention to scoring strategies.
This narrated roll took place in October 2017. I was a purple belt at the time.

Jumping guard is one of the most bitch moves in grappling change my mind
That should be posted on the wall of every gym.
The last clip at the end was hilarious!!! - Taking a results oriented approach may take the fun out of it, so it's cool you stuck to your game. The ability to sweep him so many times was a good takeaway. - Good match!
I find anything done by Steve Carell to be hilarious. I am a huge Office fan. I'm also a fan of winning, so I HAVE adopted a more "points-friendly" approach to tournaments so I don't just give buckets of points to my opponent. They gotta earn 'em!
Great match. Couple missed opportunities, but I love your kill or be killed mentality! I'd rather lose an exciting match, than win a boring one as well.
You said it!
buddy your clips are super hilarious..... subscribed
That is usually the fun part for me. I remember finding that Office clip at the end and chuckling the whole time I worked with it! Thanks for chuckling along!
Points need to go away, all BJJ tournaments should be submission only.
I agree. Submissions are what make jiu jitsu fun for me - either figuring out how I got caught, or (better yet) finding my own. There are more and more sub-only tournaments popping up, so I hope that trend continues.🤞
Man that was a great roll. Andrew is a beast and you guys both looked awesome. I love the hunt for the finish mentality!
Yes - Andrew definitely hit beast level somewhere along the way 💪
Pshh. Guard pullers 🙄
always the best edits! another brilliant video
Thank you!!!
Jumping guard. No thanks sir.
Position over submission. And position wins points.
Yes it does. I am too much like a kid in a submission store, I guess. I have started doing rounds of points sparring (at least in my mind) before I compete in a points tournament. I'm trying to care!
Interesting strategy keep going for the subs 😂
OHHHHH so fun to watch!!!! thanks for the upload..
Thank you!!!
Congrats on the 1k! And love the sound effects!
Yesssss! I'm pumped to hit that mark!
Despite being down on points it looked to me like you did a good job in the match. A little bit of laziness dropping back to guard, but we've all been there (tired and the lure of guard is seductive). Great match, you should still feel proud.
Thanks. Yeah, not my proudest moment, but clearly a product of how I usually roll!
Just found your channel..subbed..
Great vid and commentary. Beautiful effort
Thanks- I'm (slowly) learning! 😁
You've got some interesting instincts. Normally, when myself or people I train with are tired, we fight like crazy to get to top position so we can rest. You were tired and kept going to guard with a good 'top-control' opponent. It seems crazy to me but I enjoyed watching it.
It IS crazy. I like your instincts better, and even years after this match, I’m still trying to get over my old habits of accepting bottom positions.
jumping guard = slam and take the loss
Hahaha! If there were more rebels like you, there would be less guard pulling!
Points guy here- I'm a white belt and was in the same situation with a blue belt. I managed to take his back and spammed backmount points. He got out of the hold but time was running and tried to do an americana from side control I grabbed his collar and didn't care and won. He was very irritated. Despite that I must build confidence for submissions though
If you can hit back mount on a blue belt, you are 90% of the way to being a sub guy! Earning points in competition is great, though. Keep scoring those points and winning matches!
Valiant effort
Thanks! I like that description!
That knee extension looked real fun...
It wasn't bad. With more forward momentum, it becomes a dangerous move. Look up jumping guard injuries if you want to get sick.
I have the same problem. As far as, I'm waaaaay too willing to just play from guard..
Yes. We should snap that habit! I've tried to avoid "settling" in training, because it seems to carry over into competition, and honestly, it's a little embarrassing to watch!
Another great video, keep it up.
Thanks, sir!!!
i don't either. i just want to smash and not get smeshed
That's definitely the fun part!
I have an example clip of a jump guard knee dislocation...
Okay, that was brutal. I knew I didn't want to watch it, but I had to check it out! Something about seeing a knee bend the wrong way makes me hyper-cringe! 🤢
@@Roll_Vids that resulted in two knee surgeries and lost the use of my right foot.
@@mjg29x That's horrible. And 100% preventable. There are enough risks in bjj without this! Sorry about your situation - that just sucks.
@@Roll_Vids Thanks, man. It sucks but that was almost 10-years ago and I’m still training so there’s that.
How do you manage the nervousness and butter flys in the stomach of competing? I stop competing because of this. I just remember on the third competition i felt like throwing up before they called me out to the mat. I just hate that awful feeling. Any suggestion on how to over come that feeling a week before competing and when your actually waiting in line before the match?
Honestly, that has been a real struggle for me too. I made a video outlining a few things that have helped me to fight past that gross feeling you described.

But, if you wanted a sub why didn't you fight to be on top instead of playing guard?
That is a great question. For some reason, I felt like I had a good chance to sub him from the guard. I would have been much better off to work into dominant positions and see what opened up.
im the same way f the points
.okay.
Your a fighter that wants consensual intercourse.
Your a fighter.
People get hurt
Being a casual/hobbyist is fine. Hobbyists keep the gym lights on. But telling competitors not to jump guard in competition because of the hazard of injury is just ridiculous. And wanting to go for submissions is admirable, but giving up dominant positions to do so isn't smart (points or not), and isn't conducive to more 'fun' jiujitsu as you would seem to think. There's nothing fun about watching two people literally voluntarily rolling over onto their back with no real submission threat.
