I am a 52 year old black belt in BJJ, and I have trained for thirteen years. I have soaked up all kinds of ideas and motivation from watching technique and rolling videos on RUclips, but my favorite type of video has always been narrated rolls. I decided to go back and do a narrated breakdown of some of my rolls from the past, as well as some current ones. I hope I can provide ideas and motivation for those of you who love this stuff as much as I do!

Jiu jitsu changes people's lives. For me, it demolished three phobias by making me face them!

It's also good for a busy mind. Alot of people don't realize that ADHD isn't all the same. I often wonder how Patrick would of made out with his training if he stayed in sambo, or went over to one of the bjj camps.
I bet lots of queers go into jiu jitsu
Good video, Mr Wicks!!!
Dude!!! (formerly cleancrankbjj) your videos have gotten really good 👍👍👍
Glad you shared. Sometimes, I watch other grapplers and wonder why they seem so cool under pressure when sometimes I worry about being smushed. - Oddly, I became slightly claustrophobic after dealing with a 6 ft 6 in and 300 lb wrestler named Bumblebee. It was the early stage of my grappling journey and we were always paired together. He had the same move every single time. Pass my guard by shoving his elbows in my thighs, kneeing through my guard and a nightmarish side control for almost five minutes. I almost quit due to working with him constantly. - I stayed and now I am other people's Bumblebee (just not as big). - I still panic sometimes when people have an over aggressive side control though.
Yes, yes it does...
Not BJJ, but Homer threw a pretty decent flying side kick in that clip.
W mans for posting a loss
Thanks!
wow very impressive performance. congrats! how was your training leading up? can you go into some details? thanks!
Thanks! My actual bjj training didn't actually change much, but in the last couple of months before the tourney I did it more often - like 4-5 times/week instead of 3. I scaled back my weight training and did a bunch of torturous cardio training on the treadmill. I pushed through six 6 minute "rounds" of fast running separated by a minute of recovery. This translated to more active open mats and "cardio confidence" that Keenan Cornelius talks about. I also followed some of Keenan's advice about mental preparation.
@@Roll_Vids thx!!
This kid did really well. I guess there are more restrictions than in MMA otherwise either one could have ended it sooner.
is the battery system you show at 4:49 completely independent of the factory electrical system in the van?
Yes - It's independent. It is only charged by solar. I've heard that it's not hard to set it up to charge off the alternator, but we don't use that much power generally.
Don’t be scared to use closed and half guard. No gi this days are so oriented to work from open but we are missing the point and the gift that those guards have.
I was actually thinking about this advice while I rolled today. I used to love attacking from closed guard and now I open up right away work open guard. I'm going to focus on going back to those old sweeps and attacks for a while and see how it goes...
I'm a 34 year old blue belt who is healing from lcl replacement. The docs say I can't train for a year. Watching older guys like you give me hope for my own longevity.
You’ve got lots of time! I didn’t start until I was 39. Just take it easy with those knees!😄
2:36 I bet you could have still kumura him. You can see his arms separate after he throws you. I'm proud of you for doing tournaments though. Most people don't have the guts for that especially over 40 years old. I love going to turle when I'm bottom. It's really underrated and if you do it a lot you learn how to fight from turle position.
Yeah- I’ve been going to turtle more to escape side control lately, but I need some more options so I don’t camp out too long.
Hey A plus for 52 years old🤙🤙 Looks like could have gone eitherway but the strength and weight and age make a difference...
I do not know the rules of the competition you were in, but it seemed to me that if your opponent was so inclined, those "slams " could have been way harder. Seems like a good dude.
Yes - He wasn't putting any force (other than maybe gravity) into taking me down. I appreciate that he wasn't trying to destroy me!
as a rule of thumb: every ten years younger and every 20 pounds heavier = 1 imaginary belt higher. you didnt wrestle a blue belt.
I bet you felt that the next day
Yes- even the same day. I had a four hour drive to get home afterward, and I almost needed help getting out of the car. Just a “good soreness” though😊
Awesome narration. I was thoroughly invested. Some funny parts too😀
Thanks! 😊
Bigger, stronger, younger, and a judoka? You did about as well as could be expected.
Thanks 😁
Dude. Your narration is hilarious, kudos! You got a new subscriber. To be honest, I don't think there is all that much more you could have done.
Thanks a bunch! Yeah - I get a kick out of myself too.
you got harvey wieinsteined
3:54 - You might have been able to use your right hand to connect to his left wrist/arm, hip escape away from that post to free your left leg for the triangle, then pulling the right leg through to lock it up. Here's me hitting it on someone WAY bigger than me (should start at 2:16) - ruclips.net/video/-_azWjTbHTA/видео.htmlsi=39T6Ivqf3B7oaYri&t=136
I love the fact you're doing this at 52. I'm 43 and just started BJJ 6 months ago. It would have been interesting to see where things went in a longer match - would probably have benefitted you.
…maybe. Honestly, I was pretty gassed out. That was my fifth match of the day, so I didn’t have a lot left in the tank. As far as being 52, it is mostly because I refuse to think of myself as an older dude, but wow does my body remind me sometimes!
You fought a black belt judoka, and it appeared his game plan was centred around that.
I thought you did really well.
Thank you!
As a 52 year old BJJ guy myself, you represented yourself very well. Big and in shape, skilled and half your age is a tough task. I think it was a good match. Thanks for sharing
Zero interest in actually submitting you he just stayed on top.. everything that’s wrong with comp jiu jitsu ..
Why would anyone who is not a snake girl do rubber guard?? Let alone when past 50??
Judoka are pinners. They transition from pin to pin very well it’s part of the judo game. It was a good match.
Yes. I’d like to train a bit more with some judokas and their relentless pressure. It’s humbling, but it would help me to sharpen some of my escapes.
You really needed more time, but great match.
The logic of this competition eludes me. Why practice judo when one is going into a basically wrestling competition?
Your question eludes me. You think he was using too much judo?
@@devonthebeast5277 Too little
Yeah, not sure if being a Judo black belt has much to do with a grappling match.
Definitely pulling guard and playing it on your terms. Checking out some leg entries.
Yeah - I try not to be a guard puller, but there is a time and a place!
Awesome match, brother! I would have gone for half guard at 2:03 instead of turtle. From there, he probably would have driven forward to smash, but that's when you lace a lock down, do a lock down whip for some under hooks or just a normal sweep if he whizzers and doesn't base. If he doesn't let go of the whizzer to base, take that underhook and whip him the other way getting those electric under hooks into the electric chair or just drive forward with a knee tap after you switch your feet. oss!🤙
Yeah -I like the lockdown for setting up sweeps, and I never found the opportunity with this guy. I think the reason I went to turtle instead of half guard was that it was such a relief to get out from being pinned on my back. It would have been worth a shot!
I think you need to take some stem cell therapy, do some growth hormone, tren, sustanon 250, deca and some horse hormones, then you should do much better next time.
Ah the Gordon Ryan routine
Those are genius level suggestions. I don’t even know what those things are, but they sound great.
No, that would destroy his health! He needs a Baretta.
Cool match yet the Judo guy has not showed much his Judo skills in ne-waza.
You look great at 52. I'm 40 and have only been training for a few years
Nice- keep it going!!!
Push off the chin on the body lock and bring your legs back inside. Thats my go to on the body lock counter
Getting out from under a judoka is a tall order.
True!
@@Roll_Vids great jobb though . very skilled you are . your jujitsu is strong .
Big and very strong guy with a lot of skill. 2 decades younger and a ton of muscle, you did well I thought
Thanks. I was definitely trying to throw the whole toolbox at him, but his side control was unreal.
Absolutely. Great roll, commentary, and learning opportunities.
100% agree. Haven't done BJJ in a decade but based on how hard you had to work on your own leg during rubber guard, your hip mobility seems quite limited. Given how incredibly annoying it is to try to pass the guard of sb who has great hip (and spine) mobility, improving that might be a game changer for you.
Not having a neck is a huge advantage lmao
Yeah - not sure why I was trying to choke that man!
