A Super Mario Odyssey Retrospective

- Super Mario Odyssey just had its fifth anniversary. To celebrate, I wanted to revisit the game and see if it was just as amazing as I remembered it to be. It has been quite a long time since we got a new 3D Mario game, so I am still hoping for a Super Mario Odyssey 2. But until then, here's a retrospective of Super Mario Odyssey INCLUDING a look at the SECRET mode you may have missed!
- Игры
What I like about Odyssey is that if I don’t have a ton of time to play, I can sit down grab a few moons and shut it off. It’s really fun, rewarding and relaxing!
That’s the point, Nintendo design it that way to fit with the portable nature of the switch
This is an amazing retrospective. Even as someone who hasn't played the game, its still so entertaining to watch. Thx Demeech:)
I totally agree! It feels so rewarding to collect the tons of moons!
Personally I feel the moons should of capped at 500 because there you unlock the darker run which really test the skills you found out in the game. 999 moons seems much as you don’t get anything unless your trying to get 100% but doesn’t mean Super Mario Odyssey is a bad game
Disagree there.
There r 880 moons u collect and u buy the rest from the shop
I agree, super mario galaxy 2 was my childhood but odyssey is simply the best
I love Galaxy 2 as well
I still remember getting this game for Easter and beating it in like 2-3 dsys and i still replay it to this day
Even though it's the best on paper, my favorite Mario game will always be Galaxy hands down due to its cinematic presentation and stellar soundtrack.
ABSOLUTELY.
Odyssey is truly a masterpiece. Can't wait to see this retrospective, Demeech!!
I have that
What did you think Perry?
@@Demeech It was a great retrospective and I'm 100% for it.
I think the best praise I can give to Odyssey is how it shows that a game like Crash of the Titans can work. And the funniest thing here is that Odyssey revitalized Mario bigger than ever while MOM caused Crash to, well, crashed.
Best Nintendo game I've ever played, never will I regret the hundreds of hours I put into every single moon, secret coin etc. Its just a ton of fun, so versatile and beautiful.
Don't get me wrong. Super Mario Odyssey is spectacular, but I believe it's biggest mistake is having so many useless moons. A casual player who only wants to finish the game would miss a lot of the most interesting areas in the game because they found more than enough moons just shining on the ground, but a completionist would get a bit bored of having to pick up all those moons that are just shining on the ground
Fun fact: Bowser's Fury is a style of 3D Mario game I would love to see expanded upon. It takes all the freedom of Odyssey, adds multiple powerups that you can switch between at any point, and all the sprites actually have some kind of challenge behind them. It's a very compact gamw full of creative and fun challenges and something I'd love to see developed as a full game
3rd favorite game in the series, love it so much
I regret getting the Switch so late circa late 2022. Beautiful system, fun games and brought back my faith in Nintendo since GameCube. Odyssey was something i never expected even for a Mario game. Tearing up and clapping at the end of the game. What a masterpiece!
I don't understand people's fascination with New Donk city. Personally I hate big city settings in games, grey, ugly, just metal and concrete. I thought it was somewhat interesting that they put Mario alongside those Sonic 06 kind of humans and this city is in the sky or something like that but I wouldn't say that I liked it.
I believe people like big city environments because it reminds them of where they live and grew up. Having been a city kid my whole life, I can confirm that a city setting just makes me the most comfortable. There's nothing quite like being outside in the middle of a bustling city. However, if you did not grow up in a city, it might not be as inherently comfortable for you.
I completely agree with you
It has too many significant problems to be considered the best. I had fun playing it, at least on my first playthrough, but it's honestly the worst 3D Mario. I'm having more fun playing Sunshine, and with that mission structure, that's saying something.
Without making this post too long, there are so many redundant Moons, the Cloud and Ruined Kingdoms were incredibly disappointing, the captures felt a little too forced, and most areas didn't really feel like they were designed around Mario's base moveset enough.
Galaxy is still the best 3D Mario game. An Odyssey 2 could very well top it if it fixes those issues. It could even be a mechanically better game than 64 if it gives you a more functional long jump and dive and also allows you to build a lot of momentum and gives you ways to preserve it.
I remember, when odyssey first came out I played the hell out of it, and, of course loved it. But I didn’t think you hit me quite as hard as super Mario galaxy did with that first came out.
But the funny thing is is overtime. I always keep going back to Odyssey over every other Mario game. I think the movement is perfect and Galaxy as amazing as it is lacks the platforming challenge, and the extra little tidbits that I think odyssey really nails.
Missed opportunity to make this a Mario Party Superstars video, since that game turned 1 year old today.
We had a really similar approach with the game. As a big Mario fan I was really REALLY hyped for the game (and for the switch) after the January 2017 trailer. Then I played it and it was even better than what I thought, it is still my favourite Mario game and my personal best of all time game. Something you didn't talk about much is about how magical the festival feels, it gives me goosebumps, it's just an happy and fun moment, and the song is amazing
It is! I think that applies to most of the game.
I don’t have a problem with the amount of content in Odyssey, but rather the quality of it all. Not every challenge to obtain a moon feels designed equally. I don’t mean how there are some moons that are just laying about either considering Banjo Kazooie had some jiggies placed out in the open as well.
For the vast amount of content Odyssey has, I can really only recall a handful of moments that actually stuck with me. Meanwhile with SM64, Sunshine, and both Galaxy games I can recall precise jumps, tricks, and flips that I needed to use to collect those stars and Shines. I remember having fun with Odyssey (I even got 100% in the game and made a thank you tweet to Nintendo back when I did), but I cannot for the life of me remember any tricks I used to obtain moons in Odyssey outside of a couple exceptions when I made up a challenge for myself. Darker side of the moon was a fun challenge though, I will admit.
I was hopeful that this review would give me a new perspective on Odyssey, but unfortunately for me it didn’t. I’m glad that Demeech and others enjoy Odyssey as much as they did and still do, but for me I think I’m content with leaving it as a fun, OK experience in my mind and choose to replay Sunshine or SM64 again instead. Come to think of it, I wanted to replay Galaxy 2 since it wasn’t on 3D All-Stars. Maybe I’ll go and see how well it fairs against time
My thoughts precisely!
It might not just be for you. Many feel the same way. Also, T&D is some guy who clearly doesn't like Nintendo. His opinion is 100% factually INNNNNNN-VALIDDDDD
@@Demeech Clearly!
@@Demeech Yeah that’s probably accurate. One thing you noted that you liked was the movement. For me though, it feels too polished I guess? Like Nintendo had an exact way they wanted me to complete their challenges and they left very little room for experimentation. I think I also prefer Sunshine’s ability to cancel a dive into a ground pound instead of Odyssey’s ground pound canceling into a dive.
But yeah, to each their own. I’m glad y’all enjoy Odyssey so much, and I’m hoping we get a sequel for the game at some point soon
@@CosmicTornado1 For me it's the opposite. Odyssey gives you so many tools and different ways to go about most moons which is what makes the game so much fun to go back to for me. There's often a lot of times where you can find interesting ways to complete certain objectives, like that one level in the lake kingdom where you could use the frog to jump over the poison waves, or if you wanted a challenge you could use Mario to do it instead.
Great Review💪
Great retrospective
I think people who like 64 the most are nostalgia blind.
Hard to believe this game came out 5 years ago. It’s still the best Switch game. Oh and a Happy Halloween.
Mario Oddysey when it came out was a revolution!!! I’m just wondering where is the next game in the series
The pitch perfect control and animation of Mario and is the foundation of the game’s joy.
It’s why I prefer Odyssey a bit to the also good Bowser’s Fury.
Huh, I didn’t get the notification for this one, but it’s a great video nonetheless!
NO WONDER why it's been having an unusually slow launch.
Super Mario Odyessey is a excellent game, but it is not the best. It has it's fair share of issues.
I mean what mario game doesn’t have its notable flaws? It’s a question of which games have the strongest positive elements to offset that. Not to say i agree that oddessey is the best mario game either, but it having issues i’d say isn’t invalidating by itself.
Just because it isn’t perfect doesn’t mean it can’t be the best
@@Toaster003 Galaxy and 64 is better.
@@KaptainKharisma 64 is more enjoyable but definitely not better. Galaxy is potentially better but not as enjoyable. Idk
@@KaptainKharisma 64 sucks imo
5:17 He mentions Bowsers Minions which was a mario themed comedy animation I remember from elementary school. Two words... LUCKY CANDY!
Some people like open world or level based so it's always subjective but I'm a level based person. In galaxy every star felt significant while in oddesey I just got them for the sake of making a number go up. My favorite moons had to be the sub sections but those are all just basically just inferior versions of levels. Also this is a small gripe but I really liked doing a high jump by pivoting and jumping and it just feels so bad to have to group pound to high jump. Good feeling movment is important and that one small gripe is why 64 and oddysey don't feel great for me to play since the pivot jump isn't easy to do all the time.
One thing I'm a bit disappointed by and I don't see anyone mentioning is how purple coins are always in bunches of 3 or more. The game might say it has 100 of them hidden in a kingdom but that's not 100 spots for you to find. There's really only 30 or so which is a bit lame considering how many places you could potentially hide them in. I'd much rather have a smaller count of coins with each being hidden individually. They're still fun to search for, but I can't help but feel like being lied to when looking at the purple coin counter.
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best masterpieces out there! But the one thing I absolutely love from that game is the Mario 64 outfit! It's actually really impressive that Nintendo actually put that outfit in the game and it feels spectacular. Also Super Mario Odyssey itself, it's actually a remake of super Mario 64 of its own. Which means *super Mario Odyssey is the super Mario 64 remake we've been wanting truthfully!*
Super Mario 64 DS is a dang good time as well. But that was almost 20 years ago.
@@Demeech yeah! I'm honestly surprised no one talked about that game that much. It deserves more attention
I don't think you know what "remake" means
@@jclkaytwo I know what remake means. It means it's something built from the ground up
@@theknightmarem64bros36 how is mario odyssey a remake of mario 64?
Nah, I disagree with you, so your opinion is wrong.
The best Mario game ever made is Mario Teaches Typing 2.
Don't you mean Hotel Mario? That's a game that's timeless and how can we say no when Mario's offering us toast?
Don't you mean Switch Sports?
This games an amazing game, and an amazing experience. The realistic dragon boss genuinely surprised me.
I think all of the Wii U ports are to keep people buying switch games as they develop more large ones. It would make sense, the console is supposed to have a long shelf time.
I think Bowser would have done better to divest himself of gold stock since the influx of supply caused the price to decrease.
Odyssey is a masterpiece.. but Super Mario Land is the best mario game to me and i have no idea why
The VR mode? I'm aware of that. Just didn't have the goggles to try it.
Hear my out, i like the booster course pass, but what if we got nitro tracks based on mario games like these
Back when the Nintendo Switch looked promising and the online was free. I miss those days.
The online used to be free?? 💀
@@Toaster003 back in 2017, the online was free, than in 2018, Nintendo decided to goddamn charge $20 a month for the online. Honestly I suggest getting a Wii U and Playstation 3 if you are thinking about gaming online on console. Additionally, get Homebrew on your Wii, by getting Homebrew on your Wii, you can play on an online server made by fans called Riiconnect24, highly suggest doing that. Oh and in general, get Homebrew on your Wii please, Homebrew has multiple applications you can download on your Wii, including Riivolution, which allows you to apply full on mods. I played a rom hack called Super Mario Starshine, which recreates Super Mario Sunshine in Super Mario Galaxy 2, and the demo is out now, eventually SPG64 will release the full mod for all of us to enjoy, AND I CAN'T WAIT, SUPER MARIO STARSHINE WILL BE BETTER THAN SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY, MARK MY GODDAMN WORDS! Anyway, bottomline, get Homebrew on your Wii.
@@charliep7112 "charge $20 a month"...........
It's actually $20 a year if you get the 12 months online membership that's only $19.99. also real fact: both Doug Bowser and Shuntaro Furukawa *never* made the decision to make the paid online membership. It was planned long before they even became presidents, which means Reggie was affiliated with that decision when the switch was being developed and while iwata was hospitalized

Three retrospectives of my top three favorite Switch games in the span of a year? It must be my birthday!
All I can say is this was a god tier retrospective. Odyssey's not my favorite Mario game, but I'll tell you this it was the game that made me buy a Switch, reinvigorated my love for Nintendo at the time, and for a while it remained as my favorite Switch game and still is one of my absolute favorite games of all time.
I was 23 when I got Odyssey and played it, it was like going back to 1998 when I was 5 and playing Super Mario 64 for the first time, it took me back to when I first started gaming, it was a beautiful feeling. I shed tears during the New Donk City festival, from the whole celebration being a callback to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, to Pauline's angelic singing, and it felt like I was playing through one giant time capsule that represented the whole of the Mario series at the time. I can't tell you what a feeling it was to be overwhelmed with such emotion and be crying tears of joy to be apart of this monumental celebration. And then there's Cappy... I love him! I wish he'd come back, he's adorable! The capture mechanic might honestly be my favorite handling of Mario's power ups, just so much variety and versatility when it comes to using them.
My only real criticisms would be the Crazy Cap selling moons, but like you said, it takes a whole lot of coins to exploit that. I didn't even know about it until after I beat the game for the first time. And I wish this game saw some substantial DLC, like new kingdoms to explore. I would kill to explore a kingdom inspired by Sunshine and the Galaxy games.
Is it still my favorite Switch game...? I don't know. It's currently tied with Kirby and The Forgotten Land, and it's tough to pick which one is better than the other as they're both perfect games in my book. I have more attachment towards the Mario series, but Forgotten Land is just so good. I might just say I have two all time favorite Switch games. lol
As Cappy would say: "Thank you, Demeech. It's been an honor walking a mile on your head."
I found it odd Cappy has yet to appear outside of Odyssey in any notable capacity. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Demeech Maybe Nintendo's reasoning is "um, how would Cappy drive?" if he was playable in the next Mario Kart.
I personally don't agree that this is the best Mario game, but it brings me great joy to see you've found a game that brings you so much happiness. It's an incredible feeling!! That game for me is Bowser's Fury.
Except that Bowser's Fury isn't really a game
Because it's come alone with Sm3dWorldn

Odyssey was an absolute snoozefest
7:40 You want a unique take on Atlantis? Watch Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire".
Odyssey is pretty overrated, the game is ultimately short unless you go through the painstaking challenge to grab all the stupid moons
Odyssey is my least favorite Mario game of all time, mainly because I spent so many dog gone hours to collect EVERY SINGLE MOON in the game, and are even some moons that hurt my interest in the game, and I did it with no sleep for four days, this game is pure torture for me, that doesn’t mean I hate it, but I’d rather play any other Mario game on Switch, with both Mario + Rabbids games being my all time favorites. I would even play the Mario sports games on Switch to spite Demeech because wants a Super Mario Odyssey 2, and I am vetoing it because I refuse a Super Mario Odyssey 2
3:00 😂 FRANCIS
Best excluding Mario teaches typing
wait this isnt mario galaxy
The game is designed very well though. I think it’s overrated but, the way the game was developed is how you’re supposed to develop a good game!!! Nintendo is great at making the mainline Mario and Zelda games.
Gotta be real saying Odyssey is the best Mario game is the most youtuber take out there. The game's about as generic and family-friendly as anything else from modern Mario. I'll gladly take the unique feel of Galaxy over the stale repetition of Odyssey any day.
What do you mean "the most youtuber take out there"? It's just his opinion. LOL
Of course you can disagree with him, but he's entitled to his own opinion (likewise, you're entitled to yours, too).
I've been called entitled before, but not in the correct way usually!
I like Odyssey as much as the next guy, but Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are very close to being objectively the best Mario games and are the greatest Mario games in the greater opinion of people.
I can't argue there.
I Think you mean SM64
@@RoseQuartz692 nah

Unpopular opinion but i prefer Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
Honestly Bowser’s fury is the blueprint for my dream Mario game
Bowsers Fury gets me hyped for the next 3D mario. I'd say we'll hear about a new 3D mario in 2024. Heck maybe next year after the mario movie.

1 Super Mario Galaxy
2 Super Mario Sunshine
3 Super Mario Galaxy 2
4 Super Mario 64
5 Super Mario Odyssey
6 Super Mario 64 DS
7 Super Mario 3D World
8 Super Mario 3D Land
(they are all 7/10 minimum, I don't think there are any bad ones, 3d land is pretty cool ngl)
"Noice"
Mario Odyssey is honestly one of the worst designed 3D Mario games of all time. What I truly love about 3D Mario is using the vast array of tools the game provides you with to conquer challenges in your own distinct ways or the challenging and interesting linear sections. Sunshine does these both very well and makes for an experience with a lot of great variety! Mario Odyssey is like Sunshine, but way weaker.
The explorative levels don't provide nearly as much challenge and ways to conquer a mission. So many moons are clear cut and don't have any unique ways of obtaining them, and if they do, it's not really worth it! I was recently playing Super Mario 64 DS and I was reminded why I love playing 3D Maio games while playing that because even though I played SM64 several of times before, it's fresh each time because I can choose what stages I can play and many missions have several ways to beat them. For instance, in Tall, Tall Mountain, there's a star locked up behind grates that you get by finding a secret slide, but if you use Luigi's special flower ability, you can bypass that slide! In Big Boo's Haunt, the first mission locks you to the first floor, but with Mario's wall jump, you can get another star early if you want! In Hazy Maze Cave, right on the door to the left, there is a star high above that you are supposed to find while exploring the large labyrinth, however, you can actually get it right there by doing a precise triple jump on the black box with Luigi! in Bob-om Battlefield, collecting red coins is so much easier if you happen to have already unlocked the wind cap and the cannons! IIn Lethal Lava Land, there's a star that you are supposed to get by rolling over a log, but it's also behind a metal grate, so if you use Luigi's flower, you can skip the whole thing. You can even use the wing cap as a third method to conquer it! It just feels so awesome finding a new method to beat these classic stages. The game rewards you for knowing the game and its mechanics and world! Juxtaposed to this, Mario Odyssey has so many missions where moons are out in the open, require a linear path, are just slightly obscured, need a ground pound, and more. It's lame. I can't think of many moons where the creative solution was the better solution. I liked that skip in the Lake Kingdom... but, yeah. New Donk City felt like a hub world, which is kinda bad because there wasn't any challenge.
The linear challenges are never nearly as creative or interesting or well designed as "generic" Mario, like 3D World or even New Super Mario Bros. U. I mean, compare the 8-bit Maro parts of the game with that of New Super Mario Bros.
What doesn't really help are the controls. It feels like Odyssey's complex move set is the only thing allowing you to do things beyond the standard level design, but the thing is, once you learn the cap dive trick, all of the other moves the involve Mario and his cap are useless and there isn't much else beyond that. It actually isn't very complex. Sunhine and 64 had cleaver power ups that let you interact with the world in different ways. The captures are so limiting and aren't a good replacement for power ups.
I mean, I don't hate this game. I played it more than Deemech, 100%ing it almost 4 times, but's one of my least favorites in an already great series. I just say these things so that I can see Mario evolve.
Mario 64 and Sunshine are way more flawed than Odyssey. They control terribly which adds “challenge” that isn’t fun. Also, yes, Odyssey has many forgettable moons, but they aren’t really a problem since they’re easy to get and are over with. That’s more than I can say for SM64 and SMS’ 100-coin Stars/Shines, which are a complete chore and are frustrating having to restart if you die right before getting 100 coins. And don’t get me started with the blue coins in SMS that are a painful process of getting and don’t feel rewarding at all, even after all the hours spent getting them. Getting the moons in Odyssey may be more limited in ways you can approach them, but they are still more fun to get. SM64 and SMS are still good games, but they have aged pretty badly and aren’t nearly as good as Galaxy, 3D World, or Odyssey.
@@benfrenzy3136 SMS does not control poorly. Have you even played it on the gamecube?
@@kenanbroersma709 I played it on the Switch, luckily without the inverted FLUDD controls. To be fair though, SMS controls much better than SM64
@@kenanbroersma709 Mario controls in Sunshine is actually worst than 64. If u go to the secret levels without Fludd, than you'll notice that he controls an little bit stiff and how wonky it can be. Not to mentioned with physics like an rotation or spinning platform feels off and Mario will eventually slip off the platform & lose it's recovery. The only reason he doesn't feel so bad is because of Fludd with it's Hover Nozzle. But even that won't help it much if u run out of water to fast or sometimes won't recover u from falling depending on the platforming designs.
@@benfrenzy3136 The controls aren’t bad at all in 64 or Sunshine. They have, in fact, aged very well! In both games, you can pull off some very fun and advanced tricks. That really makes the game so much more interesting to play! As I said before, Odyssey has mainly the cap dive and that’s really it. I even got used to the 8 directions of DS. The 100 coins in Sunshine are not great admittedly, but are completely optional content. Same with the blue coins. I do actually like blue coins, but they weren’t handled well. Also 100 coins in 64 is fun! It encourages you to explore the each stage to its fullest, making for a great final challenge for each stage! In the DS game, they made the 100 coin hunt even more interesting, by making coins easier to obtain with Yoshi and his egg combos and the character blocks and power ups!

Look, don’t get me wrong. Odyssey’s a good game, but let’s be honest: there’s just no way it could top Super Mario Galaxy.
I think there are a lot of Mario games which top Super Mario Odyssey. The main problem with Odyssey is that you can't replay any missions.
And Super Mario 64 goes higher than Super Mario Galaxy
Agreed
@@harrybest2041 I think Odyssey is objectively the best Mario overall, but it doesn't have all the other things that the previous Mario games had that made us fall in love with them such as Sunshine's world-building, Galaxy's atmosphere, Mario Land 2's more original simple story and setting, and 3dWorld's great linear platforming levels alongside 4 co-op mode, so I can understand why Odyssey isn't everyone's favorite.
My problem with galaxy is how clunky the controls are. Mario just feels sluggish and half the time my spins don’t come out because the Wii remote. Sure I could just play 3d all stars, but it doesn’t help that much cause Mario still feels clunky

@@Toaster003 3d world is good if you actually analyze it. If you just dont say "mario has x moves and in odyssey he has y moves, and x > y so odyssey has more moves". No. It does not work like that. Well you can get it. Want a tanuki suit in the desert? Got it.
Also, if you fall off the map in odyssey just a little bit youre gone. Its ggs. Youre dead. In 3dw there are SO many ways to clutch: wall jumps, powerups, dives etc.

Idc if it’s dlc it’s literally a shorter version of nsmbu
The green man deserved better
Odyssey makes for one of the few great experiences to enjoy in the current line up of Switch games. Between the bang for your buck it has with its content and the replayability present all throughout, it made for my go-to Mario title today the same way 64 DS was in my childhood.
Mario Odyssey is my favorite video game of all time. Galaxy was great, but it kind of pales in comparison to Odyssey aside from the soundtrack
So, just because one game is a masterpiece, another game that's similar is entirely irrelevant?
@@emperorfridgethedude no Galaxy is still worth playing for sure. I just think Odyssey is a way better game
@@benfrenzy3136 oh ok
I would say Odyssey is really good but not the best.
i actually think the wedding dress outfit is cool, and I was glad to see them including a little genderbending!
Well I have a lot to say about odyssey, yeah the amount of moons don't need to bother you unless you are a complitionist like there still always the people that 100% games is important and I am one of them isn't annoying by any means but I can understand if for other it can be jarring, the gameplay of odyssey is incredible and still as someone who played games from PS and Xbox it might be the best controlled 3D game I played, is feel so good to move around, the collision decetion is on point and the speed is enough for me, the captures are defenitley the highlight for me, something I am not telling too much that my favorite mechanic in games is the ability to take the powers of enemies that how when kirby got introdouced to me it become my favorite franchise and while some are just for one and done I mean the ones you used once and nothing more like the boulder, the cactus and the tree I enjoyed them for the most part, not as much as copy abilities but still, from burst out with bullet bills, to splash around with gushens, and ram around as a Trex they serve more than enough, the level design is great and while some I wish could be bigger and just be more heck I made an idea what could be on the ruined kingdom after you defeat the dragon but it serve me more than enough, from cascade really big first true level, to the intresting turn of take a red desert in the sand kingdom to the peppy and alive metro kingdom I enjoyed most of the level from point A to B, as for the boss line up yeah they very easy ad the game but aside from galaxy 1 I think is still creative one, for the costumes they really good they serve a lot of fan service still think BOTW have more intresting one but that just me
Even with the flaws show after it come out mario odyssey is still among my favorite games of all time and my favorite mario and it get point for being a breaking point in my gaming life as being the title I got alongside smash ultimate it was the game that let me decide to move from playstation and hell... I mean mobile gaming and move on to be a full nintendo player, it was the game that I decided to learn the more proffesnional tricks in games that the game offer something I tend to ignore before I got this game, and it was the game that let me see that having higher power on the console doesn't make the game better, while not being on my top 5 favorite games of all time I still think being in my top ten is more than enough and yes I still think there games better than it like super smash bros ultimate and kirby and the forgotten land and heck even games I didn't play like final fantasy 7 or undertale is still the respectful rank of a middle S tier, game is a must have switch title in my opinion that either casual or hardcore would enjoy though if you complitionists I can say it will be hard to return to the game
7.8/10 too much hats
Nah, Galaxy is better by miles.
The first for me, although the second isn’t far behind
@Kingdom Hearts Fan2005
Finally someone gets it!
And Super Mario 64 is the best game of all time
Agreed
Yep but the Bowser fights were mid
I loved everything about this game, the movement, the kingdoms, the captures is't all phenomanoal, though i get the people that said that collecting all of the moon can be repititive sometimes, but still this game rocks
It doesn't rock as much Super Mario 64 do
I missed the premiere because I had to get braces 😢
No worries! Good luck.
For me Odyssey only exceeds 3d land in terms of 3d titles. Best Mario game is ttyd.
My thoughts on Odyssey go like this:
Pros: Theming, Cappy, Movement, Bosses, Kingdoms, pretty much the whole nine yards.
Cons: Has the most filler in any Mario Game with the moons, which you can’t repeat on a completed save. Most of them don’t have impact with what you do unless they’re exploration based. Hint Art, Rock Breaking, and Trace Walking especially. Also the game is too easy and isn’t very revolutionary either…
Still a Platinum Treasure game even if it doesn’t stand up to the Galaxy Games or Bowser’s Fury.
Great game but not as good as Galaxy. Did you play Galaxy when you were young? If not then I guess I can understand your preference of Odyssey.
I grew up with Galaxy, but adult me nowadays questions if the gameplay was well designed or is it my change of tastes, who knows, though I must say that I somehow prefer galaxy's atmosphere and narrative over the gameplay now.
@@Lalo-uu4dg Gameplay of Galaxy 1 & 2 still holds up remarkably well IMO. U can't compared it as an linear game to Odyssey where it's an open sandbox.
I hate this game
Wtf are u talking about the game has no music!?!?! This game has incredible music
Hot take, Mario odyssey is trash because most of the collectibles feel meaningless due to the crazy amount and how many are way too easy to get
It's still as hyped as it was in 2017 and 2018 for some reason
Most overrated 3D platformer I've played
Has Fun Gimmicks and Environments but the Platforming is pretty mid asf and the Captures aren't as mechanically interesting in conjunction with the level design as it should be
I understand now why so many people say this game is good. Kids. Kids are the reason. Kids can enjoy the dopamine overload of picking up moons over and over again without realizing there is no actual challenge or actual original content. This is probably the worst 3D Mario game. Galaxy 1 and 2 were probably the best.
This is the worst 3d mario game and it's not even close, useless collectibles, too easy, uninteresting worlds (except a few ones), and while the gameplay is stellar, it does get old because of the goddamn moons being all the same. Galaxy for the win
Nah I disagree odyssey is overated. 64 is the best
Disagree, albeit respectfully, I've explained my issues on comments of about 9 polls and you haven't seen any of them, so I can't be bothered to write all my issues with the game again.
It's not what In my opinion should be a 3d platformer, and is my least favourite 3d mario, but I can easily see its a phenomenal game.
My huge issue with the game isn’t the amount of moons, it’s the actual objectives to obtain them. Most of them are either reused, out in the open, or are locked to the post game. Also it just doesn’t feel as satisfying to collect moons as it did in the Galaxy games or Sunshine. But hey, an opinion’s an opinion.
Those 2 issues are connected. There are so many moons, they juste had to re-hash some ideas.
@@t.fernbach602 That doesn’t mean that they can’t make them satisfying to collect. For example, Mario 64 has red coin missions in every level, but the way you approach them is very different. Snowman’s Land has them in the igloo area while Hazy Maze Cave (the best level in the game) has them all in an elevator ride. That approach could be used for the Peach moons, or the shopping moons.
Sunshine is also kinda guilty of bad objectives to obtain the Shines. But for different problems. Like Odyssey, most are reused, like Red Coins, chasing Shadow Mario, racing against Piantassmo the 3rd, another obstacle courses and doing optional stuff like collecting 100 coins and blue coins. But the other levels u come across are so obnoxious and frustrating rather than decently challenging and u have to go through all 7 episodes in each main stage to do so.
@@jaretco6423 I would agree with you but I suck too much to even get past the second Petey Piranha fight lol
@@CullenWickham Yeah. Although 64 also has many obnoxious & repetitive moments in it's levels and missions. Including Hazy Maze Cave; which u consider the best level, while I consider one of the worst. But not nearly as bad as Sunshine has. At least u don't have to do them all and have enough Power Stars to reach the final level. Doesn't make up the rest of them u have to go through. But at least you have an option.
The game is phenomenal, but they removed Rosalina (she was going to be one of the band members), so I have to prefer Mario Galaxy
Speaking of Rosalina, do you prefer Mario Galaxy or Sparks of Hope since she is also in there and the devs made her character great?
@@Lalo-uu4dg Galaxy. I suck at RPGs
@@CaptainCat101 I would recommend you to check out the Mario and Luigi games at some point since its rpg gameplay is more casual friendly than the other RPGs in the market (and I actually prefer that style).
I’d hardly call a 20 minute video “hyper analytical”. Joesph Anderson’s “mario odyssey is no masterpiece “ is a 2 hour video that I think is more reflective of how I view the game. Mario sunshine has the best controls in the series. Mario 64 is more fun than odyssey . The movement in both is far more free form than odyssey. You do the same sequence of moves in odyssey 90% of the time to get the most height and distance. That’s not to say odyssey is devoid of depth , but it just doesn’t compare to how parkour-like Mario can be in 64 and sunshine. Play sunshine again and really try to push your controls. Mario feels incredibly tight and responsive. Odyssey mario in comparison feels too slow , at least for me. I find odyssey kind of boring after the first or second play through. And I’m also in the camp that thinks the moons are not as fun to collect as the stars of 64 because they used to be more difficult and they meant more to you because of it. You had to pick and choose which ones you wanted avoid if you weren’t going for 100%. Mario odyssey is padded to hell with moons that you can just buy at a store if you suck at the game. There are too many same ol boring moons with no unique gameplay. How many times did you chase sheep or fish…too many. “Oh but the capture system gives you unique and fun gameplay”, to which I say , yeah like 4 of the 50 were fun, but most of them are so one note and it would’ve been cooler to have less that were more fleshed out. This game is good, but dare I say it, it’s not great. It’s not a masterpiece, it is a creative beautiful looking game that is over stuffed with repetitive objectives. It does a lot right , but what it does do right ain’t new. It’s Mario, it’s been good since before they created the universe. Every game has its problems, I wish everyone would stop ignoring this ones. But hey that’s just my opinion.
I saw it. I thought it was mostly constructed well, but I didn't really agree.
@@Demeech fair enough.
Super Mario odyessy is objectively the best but imo galaxy games and sunshine top it
Galaxy 1 & 2? I agree. Sunshine though? Eh. Not so much.
@@jaretco6423 iryo but we can both agree sunshine is better then 64
As for the VR mode yes I know about it but I be lying if I say I overlooked it
