At 16:16, I liked how N. Tropy seemed to accidently smack his clock, briefly looking down but then choosing to ignore it and focus on Crash. It was a fun little detail that I'm sad wasn't in the remake. Smacking the clock sort of showed how he was, for all his supposed refinement, reckless in his pursuit of his goals. Him simply pushing it back and down in the remake just felt, bland by comparison. Also, and this is totally subjective and personal on my part, but I much preferred his inflections and tone of voice in the original in N. Tropy's lines. Personally, I think the clock smack never read well. It’s not clear how he hits it as he’s turning around. That being said, I agree it’s a neat detail in theory. I somewhat agree about the voice lines. I really like the new take on his first warp monologue, though.

Fully agree with this video. But one thing you overlooked was that Vicarious Visions stated that they went with a Pixar-like style for the remake. Let me tell you a story about two bakers. There once was a baker called N-Dog. He was new to the baking scene, but had a burning passion for his craft, and a revolutionary loaf recipe he was itching to try out. Passersby were sceptical of newcomers, but it didn't take long for tales of his baking prowess to reach the ears of hungry patrons, far and wide. Remarkably, consumers didn't have to wait for long. One, two, three, four - out popped the loaves, freshly baked and warm to the touch. Some were crustier on the outside compared to others. Some cooked for longer than you'd have liked. But upon cutting each loaf open, one would be met with a soft, fluffy, and delicious inside. The people delighted in N-Dog’s loaves for hours on end, excited for what would come next. But one day, N-Dog decided to expand his pursuits beyond his current baking, and sold his special recipe to a large conglomerate. N-Dog would go on to earn several awards and astounding praise for his later ambitious work. But what of his original recipe? Sadly, it passed to many hands, each too incompetent to unlock its potential. They clumsily composed cheap imitations and clownish reimaginings that made a mockery of what was once an esteemed baking recipe. The years passed, and many came to believe that the magic of the original loaves would be forever lost. That is, until the recipe fell into the hands of another baker: Vivi. He recognised its significance immediately - of course he would, this recipe had been sewn into the fabric of baking history itself! Vivi gathered his remaining coin to hold a conference at the annual Baking Convention, where he announced that he had acquired the fabled recipe of legend. Vivi declared that he would do everything within his power to recreate the original loaves, using the power of modern baking technology. The crowd roared, many gathering at Vivi's bakery to watch the loaves of their childhood come back to life. The air was thick with anticipation. This was surely going to be momentous. Of course, the reality of the situation could not be ignored. Vivi was, at best, a mediocre baker. His previous attempts had been unremarkable, and as such he was often reliant on general contract work from bigger companies. But he now had the treasured recipe in his grasp, unaltered. Surely, all he would have to do is replicate it exactly, and then iron out some of the more questionable ingredients! What could possibly go wrong? But Vivi was a creative all of his own. One cannot recreate the work of another's soul to every minute detail, for neither man nor gods themselves are safe from their own hubris. Inevitably, some of Vivi's sloppy techniques slipped their way into the process. At times, he became frustrated and attempted to cut corners, only for dedicated customers to point out his laziness. Vivi wiped a nervous sweat from his brow. He came to realise that, due to his lack of talent, he would be unable to replicate the exact recipe, no matter what. And yet the day came when the new loaves were finished. Many cheered upon taking their first bite for what seemed like two decades. But others found that what they were chewing on wasn't what they were expecting. The loaves looked similar, but something was definitely off. From certain angles and under certain light, the loaves looked very peculiar indeed. They had the appearance of bread exposed to air for too long, lending the insides a rougher feel. The originals had a kick to them, leaping from one taste bud to another with grace. The flavour of Vivi's loaves, however, didn't seem to be able to make the same jumps, falling short in many places, if not slipping off entirely. "It takes almost twice as long to cut through these new loaves!" one customer claimed, frustration and heartache etched into his face. "The loaves back in MY day didn't take this long to get into, no sir! And everyone preaches about the wonders of modern technology... bah! Reminds me of that one bad loaf we got back in '06 promising the speed of the good old days. Balls to the lot of them!" Another customer made bizarre claims about the sounds of the new loaves. "It just doesn't sound as good to cut through or chew," she said with a frown. "Honestly, it sometimes sounds BETTER than what I had as a child, but that's a rare occasion indeed. It just doesn't have the same 'Woah' factor, you know?" Those who complained were quickly shouted down by those who were happy with their lot. "You are incapable of appreciating its rougher, darker soul!" they cried. The critics seemed to agree, as one by one they nodded their heads approvingly of the loaves presented to them. Vivi's sales exceeded his wildest dreams. He lay in his bed, mission accomplished, and sighed with relief. The majority loved his loaves. No longer would he be treated like a fool. And yet doubt lingered in his mind. His work had a great deal of faults, despite revolving around a quality recipe that had been completed just fine in the past. Was his success a result of his own efforts, or because the original recipe was good to begin with? He bit his lip as he turned over to rest his tired little eyes. His final conscious moments of the night were fixated on the fire of expectation he had rekindled among the masses. Was he giving them false hope? Only time would tell. tl;dr The N-Sane Trilogy sucks a bunch of poopy diarrhoea dick waffles, don’t @ me defending the loading screens.
At 16:09 you can see the clock never falls, it's bad enough to not get the sound effect and slight shake for the impression that the clock fell, but you can see it floating. So it's like they didn't try to have him drop the clock aggressively like in the original
Fucking thank you for mentioning the neutral faces in the Crash 2 hologram scenes. That bugs the crap out of me. Additionally about those scenes they added interference to the lines that don't quite fit with the new aesthetics instead of just slightly rewriting them. I mean if they're rerecording the voices anyway, why not just change the lines? Plus they don't even go all the way with it. Cortex still says he'll contact Crash after the 5th crystal in the first warp room and the just doesn't, you just only get access to the Ripper Roo fight with no intro whatsoever.
Everytime I see someone arguing about the nitpicks on the "remasters" like Spyro and Crash, I think of this video, your analysis was really good and personally, I think N Sane will not age as well as the originals, because one can see the problems the remaster have, the weird choices that VV put and the overall terrible hitbox and flat jumping. I'm really glad that now Beenox it's doing a excellent work with CTR:NF for what I see as now, focusing on the details, the feel and even re-working on the characters models (cause they looked kind of weird in N Sane in some positions). The fandom even have learned their lesson on how pointing the details makes the difference between a good game with flaws (N sane) and a solid great game for Crash (CTR:NF I hope).
This. Ever since the remaster came out, I felt so weird about how unpolished it was. Almost like they didn’t have enough time or understanding of the spirit that the original games had. The remaster is solid, I enjoyed playing it, but replaying the original games is just so much more fun in so many aspects, the whole mood of the original is so rad and raw. I like the new games, but I will be missing the old aesthetics to be honest
I can appreciate both versions for different reasons, Crash 1 and 3 are at their best in the nsane trilogy. Crash 2 though? Not so much, the darkness of the warp room is missed
The remake truly did lose a lot of interesting color contrasts and texture. My hope is that once they make a new original Crash game, it forces them to make a more considered art style. Remaking a ps1 game with modern graphics probably isnt that simple, when the original's artstyle is built specifically around the graphics
The cutscenes are probably my biggest gripe with the trilogy. Just look at the Crash 1 opening cutscene and compare it to the original... they made it go from dark and scary to Cortex looking like a ballerina.
Regarding the effects like the Crash 2 warp effect and the warp room message effects seem like something possible with Naughty Dog's magic with vertex animation which Vicarious didn't do or didn't know how to replicate. If ND made this, I suppose they would've handled the effects much better.
I know this video is from a while ago, but every time I re-watch it I'm amazed by your eloquence and conciseness (is that a word?). Your attention to detail picks up on things I never would have considered, and leaves me with a deeper love (and sometimes frustration) for this series.
I love your editing!!! There is so much effort into complement the script with a visual joke or gag, and to top it all up there is the RLM references. Such a great channel.
I think after watching this video I've come to realize something: As much as OneyPlays criticisms were right, they did not need to be snarky dicks about it. Criticism should be in good faith and understanding. Most people don't realize there are actual people behind these projects who are trying everything to make them right, and are only held back by misguided feedback or hireups limiting their potential. Basically what I'm trying to say is thank you for taking all these criticisms and looking at it from an objective angle, trying to look at it from all sides and giving it the benefit of the doubt, while still having the courage to critique. I think more critics should be like this as it will prevent backlash from raging fans.
All things considered they did a pretty good job and if they patched the platforming a bit to not have slippery edges or whatever, that'd be all the better. Thankfully it's not the damned disaster that is the Ratchet and Clank remake that sucked all the soul out of it and killed the game.
Best anime arc ever. Amazing new entry in the B_Mask x Crash saga. But in all seriousness, fantastic vid dude. Really opened my eyes to the flaws that are in the reboot, along with the flaws I already noticed (lighting) or was informed prior that weren't changed (warping effect). Your channel is fantastic, keep up the amazing work.
They absolutely treated the N. Sane Trilogy as an experiment. To see if the waters were right. It's not perfect at all but it will hopefully lead to better things.
Thank you for this video man! I found myself in a very strange place last year, where two of my favorite franchises (God of War and Crash) finally got their time of day again, and were appreciated by a lot of people. But as a fan of both I've found so many things wrong with the new iterations. We need videos like this that give the fair criticism these games deserve.
I feel like most nitpicks, while valid, relied on being a comparison to the original. VV appear to be the only ones that could competently make a brand new Crash and I hope they end up doing so.
Always good to see a new video. It's certainly a flawed release. Like most remakes I'd forgive most of the changes if they just included the originals. But you can't have that happen in the current day cause then companies can't also charge to buy the original version on PSN or whatever. Also love the Oneyplay clips. Love all those doods and they really opened my eyes with their commentary. Gonna do anything about Homecoming?
About the delay crouch high jump after landing, you could avoid that by holding circle as soon as crash descends from the air before landing. The delay won't happen as long as you do it before he lands.
Absolutely brilliant analysis. As someone who lacks the in-depth knowledge of art design, I'm happy to see criticisms of the game's art direction properly articulated. I'm also glad you called out the fanboys shrieking the word "nitpicking" every time someone brought these things up. I was one of the many constantly getting into arguments with these people.
Has this been posted on the CB subreddit yet? they will crucify anyone who states anything wrong with VV's remake, P.S. This is the most level headed and professional review of any game I have ever seen and I agree with you on every single statement. Truly, Bravo sir.
Old Dingodile also sounded slightly more like an actual aussie. Just slightly. I mean considering you're using our animals in your game, I'd like to think the accent is at least accurate when it's inserted.
Multi bounce boxes took 10 hits to break in originals, except Crash 3. That's where you start getting 2 wumpas from each bounce and there's only 5 hits. If you delay your next bounces the remaining hits on the crate starts ticking down in seconds until there's only one bounce left without any wumpas.
I mean, as someone who never had a ps1 out of the fact that i wasn't born yet, I'm extremely happy to see this on a console i actually own. I'm hoping spyro follows suit
My favorite thing about the N. Sane Trilogy was how they didn't release a single update after the day one patch :) Looks like nothing will ever be improved lol
Hey B-mask I think your subscribe buttons and stuff are broke at 22:20 feels like there should be some video links or something instead of just the blank screen
Yeah, I didn't realise the new youtube annotation system was going to restrict me to the last 20 seconds . If they change this at any point in the future i'd definitely like to fix it, have no idea what to do otherwise.
I have noticed that a lot of games that become huge successes on kickstarter (Mighty No. 9, Broken Age, Yooka-Laylee) end up being disappointments or disasters while much smaller kickstarted games like Hyper Light Drifter end up being a lot more competent. What do you think this says about kickstarter?
I'd love to share this, if it was just 10:00 - 18:00 , not that i don't agree with what you say in the rest of video. The kind of schmucks I know have probably already seen reviews or analysis of this game and will click-off 5 mins in, thinking your just gonna say things they've already heard before. I'll do it anyway, great video !
As much as I thought the graphics were gorgeous I did not like the physical in the game. The jumps are less floaty and throws me off. But it gave Crash Bandicoot a second chance and the series had like 4 more game releases since then. Especially a brand new platforming game with Crash 4 It's About Time I can't thank this game enough for that.
Yeah if only Sony owned it from the get go. Like i heard it was Sony and Mark Cerny who push for a Crash comeback. So they collaborated with Activision. Wished they sold the rights to Sony. IDK if Microsoft would do them justice. We seen what happened to Banjo.
You could change your jet pack direction on the original Crash 2. You have to pause the game and go to options and change the "Flight" option. The manual and game just doesn't tell you this.
What are your thoughts on Caddy overall? You seem not to like him all too much, or do you just disagree with him often enough that agreeing with him is odd for you? I know he loves the Abe Odyssey Remake, Sly 4, says Wrath of Cortex is actually doing way too much rather than just copying 3 (though he does say it does retread a lot), and on Crash XS, which he just reviewed, he does like it (though that could be due to him being less hard on it for being an early GBA game and stuff)
Very interesting analysis, you've got yourself a new subscriber! Your complaints about this game are similar to the ones I have about my childhood game remake, Zoombinis. Though to be fair, The N-Snane Trilogy is a lot more polished than that title. I actually regret purchasing this trilogy. I was never good at the original Crash Games, and I've actually played a lot more of the PS2 titles. I can appreciate Naughty Dog's great talent, but I simply find these games frustratingly difficult. I hoped that the N-Sane Trilogy would help fix a couple of these issues by having slightly improved controls and perhaps some less-bullshit moments, but it's actually a lot worse in my opinion thanks to the spherical hitboxes. But what completely killed the game for me is the load times and the Game-Over screens. On a first generation PS4 console, the game is a pain to play because you have to wait so long before each level. Plus I have to sit through two loading screens every time I get a Game-Over because it throws me out of the level! To add insult to injury, the game gives you extra lives and sometimes kills you without removing a life from the counter. Why not just completely give up on the game over screen if you're going to do that? So yeah, I've only played the game a few hours and gave up. That ending thought, I feel you. R&C PS4 can burn in hell x)
I'm still furious at the people who insist the Nitros that randomly leap into orbit aren't a problem. Because it's my fault that the Nitro just jumped right into me mid jump. Fucked up so many time trials in 2.
While there are plenty of details in the remakes that rub me the wrong way, I can't help but feel it's a good direction in theory. I mean if they weren't trying to replicate three of the most detailed and well aged PS1 games ever made this would likely be considered impressive for the large part (imagine if they put this level of detail into redoing Wrath of Cortex for example, people would think it was nothing short of brilliance). They did a flawed but commendable effort with arguably the toughest choice of project; namely trying to recreate the best of Crash's run. They could probably do well with a new game, not perfect but definitely good, especially with what they've learned from this and their previous original titles.
Great video as always. Do you think that they should've taken more of a risk and made an original crash game for the PS4? Or do you think they should've remade another crash game, I personally think Wrath of Cortex and Twinsanity could do with a remaster (especially Wrath of Cortex since that looks worse than the PS1 games and Twinsanity as fun as it was, was too short)?
this video does a great job of getting out how I feel about the whole experience. I'm not ungrateful for what they did, but what changed is why I'm so frustrated with it. What they didn't get right are small details that really change how it feels, how it plays, even. I kinda wish they just would've done something different instead of recreating the original trilogy.
I'm glad crash is back, but, I really have little faith in VV, TFB, Beenox, Sanzahrou and all of the other small studios. Their creativity and ability is in question right now and we will only know when an original crash or Spyro game is released. I doubt it will be worse than any of the later games but I would be floored if it's anywhere near as good as the originals.
As someone who hasn't played either trilogy, I see what you're talking about with the visuals. It looks good in isolation but compared to the original it looks a bit lazy
They made some great visual changes like crystals emitting light on it's surroundings (wish that was done for coloured gems too), but some things that straight up don't look as good. Like imagine if they used the crystal/gem collection animation from Warped into all of the games. Also agreed about how flat Crash 2's warp animation is but I feel like the portals from Crash 3 are even more flat. But at VV's first attempt this remake was amazing and the positives fully outweigh the negatives these were just some things I noticed and if they're continuing the main games I'm sure the series is in good hands.
Love this video so much, it feels more & more spot-on as time passes by. Like, I hate to admit it (especially as an artist/cartoon creator myself) but I was definitely someone who overlooked N. Sane's iffy polish (or lack thereof) and ill-conceived visual direction largely because "Yay! Crash is finally back, I missed him". I feel as if it has become even harder for me to set aside these rather conspicuous issues after the release of the brilliant Crash 4: IAT, which feels and looks a hell of a lot better than NST IMO.
That's the thing so it felt so good at the time🤣I remember even being scared that vicarious visions wasn't doing crash 4. Thank god that wasn't up to me.
I think I understand your general opinions, but I’m having a hard time following the specific points you’re trying to make or understanding what each example is trying to illustrate. But thanks for covering this video though.

Balls to the lot of them!"
Another customer made bizarre claims about the sounds of the new loaves. "It just doesn't sound as good to cut through or chew," she said with a frown. "Honestly, it sometimes sounds BETTER than what I had as a child, but that's a rare occasion indeed. It just doesn't have the same 'Woah' factor, you know?"
Those who complained were quickly shouted down by those who were happy with their lot.
What a ride
Jack MB .......holy shit
You are nothing short of a god for those cheeky little references interspersed all throughout
You missed the part where Vivi actually did make some improvements to the recipe.
The fandom even have learned their lesson on how pointing the details makes the difference between a good game with flaws (N sane) and a solid great game for Crash (CTR:NF I hope).
woh
5:31 You could invert the jetpack controls in the original as well, though it could only be accessed in the said levels
Loved this video! I've not played it yet but I love your attention to detail in the differences. I hope to see more videos soon!
That intro literally made me crack up at work. That rarely happens; excellent editing bit there!
Here after your awesome Crash 4 vid! Great editing👌
You got me the moment the "Code Red" scene apparear, great video bro. ;)
Had to come back and watch this once that Spyro Remake got announced. Can’t wait to see your video on it.
11:50 I get the idea that Breath of the Wild is still using those techniques.
I'm glad someone finally said it.
I would love a finished/remastered version of Twinsanity.
Thanks for making this video. It means a lot to me.
I think the main problem is that they don't try to adapt the old Crash, they try to imitate it.
Manzanito :3 and a not very good imitation at that
All things considered they did a pretty good job and if they patched the platforming a bit to not have slippery edges or whatever, that'd be all the better.
"Please do not move, otherwise we will be shooting ourselves."
woah
They absolutely treated the N. Sane Trilogy as an experiment. To see if the waters were right. It's not perfect at all but it will hopefully lead to better things.
Im from the future, it didn't
@@SchizobatemanYou mean 4 or team rumble? Because i think the first was a missed opportunity and the second one very complacent
Where Yooka Laylee vid at you hack?!
*sweats wildly*
I didn't undergo that torture for nothing
19:57 Holy shit I thought that was the actual voice.
I feel like most nitpicks, while valid, relied on being a comparison to the original. VV appear to be the only ones that could competently make a brand new Crash and I hope they end up doing so.
Reviewing a remaster and not mentioning the original?
With the voice acting, I have to agree that they were better delivered in the original crash games.
Great editing as usual
Always good to see a new video.
It's certainly a flawed release. Like most remakes I'd forgive most of the changes if they just included the originals. But you can't have that happen in the current day cause then companies can't also charge to buy the original version on PSN or whatever.
Also love the Oneyplay clips. Love all those doods and they really opened my eyes with their commentary.
Gonna do anything about Homecoming?
Thanks man! Yeah gonna get my boy spidey a shout out v soon
About the delay crouch high jump after landing, you could avoid that by holding circle as soon as crash descends from the air before landing. The delay won't happen as long as you do it before he lands.
Why the knock on Caddicarus?
That nitpicker gag is still one my favorite gag of yours
finally! I've been looking forward to this for months
why, because shits on an awesome game that you don't like?
Absolutely brilliant analysis. As someone who lacks the in-depth knowledge of art design, I'm happy to see criticisms of the game's art direction properly articulated. I'm also glad you called out the fanboys shrieking the word "nitpicking" every time someone brought these things up. I was one of the many constantly getting into arguments with these people.
But realize there are just as many quick to use the word fanboy.
I remember seeing people hating on the redesigns in crash 4 on Facebook.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I prefer the classic trilogy over the N-sane trilogy.
I think the original Crash 2 let you invert the flight controls for the jet pack.
The option would only come up during said levels, but still.
Has this been posted on the CB subreddit yet? they will crucify anyone who states anything wrong with VV's remake,
12:30 lol does anyone knows why b mask hates Caddicarus?
2:30 that's not a spork, just a fork
What a weenie
You had me at, "IT BROKE NEW GROUND!"
Seeing Spyro call people a 'little bitch' is so surreal.
2:54 LoL that voice crack!
I don't think the remasters are the definitive version, but I think they've done some good regardless.
So...uhm...I'm late to the party, but what's supposed to be wrong with 16:05 ?
17:22 is another one which I don't really get tbh
Multi bounce boxes took 10 hits to break in originals, except Crash 3. That's where you start getting 2 wumpas from each bounce and there's only 5 hits. If you delay your next bounces the remaining hits on the crate starts ticking down in seconds until there's only one bounce left without any wumpas.
IT BROKE NEW GROUND! I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT! AT-STs AT-STs!
THINGS I KNOW!
Where did the clip from 19:57 - 20:11 originate from? Or was it merely improvised since I know B-Mask dislikes the Skylanders franchise.
That was made by an actual fan
I'd rather not point them out directly
Oh ok, thanks. Btw nice analysis video on the N Sane Trilogy. Also watched the Crash E3 and Spyro 2 videos, which were ok.
Haha thanks man, much appreciated
I mean, as someone who never had a ps1 out of the fact that i wasn't born yet, I'm extremely happy to see this on a console i actually own. I'm hoping spyro follows suit
I watched this to decide whether I should play the original or the remake trilogy and I am now more confused.
Play the original
What was this video called again? 19:57
My favorite thing about the N. Sane Trilogy was how they didn't release a single update after the day one patch :)
Looks like nothing will ever be improved lol
Hey B-mask I think your subscribe buttons and stuff are broke at 22:20 feels like there should be some video links or something instead of just the blank screen
Yeah, I didn't realise the new youtube annotation system was going to restrict me to the last 20 seconds . If they change this at any point in the future i'd definitely like to fix it, have no idea what to do otherwise.
18:37 What is this clip from?
I have noticed that a lot of games that become huge successes on kickstarter (Mighty No. 9, Broken Age, Yooka-Laylee) end up being disappointments or disasters while much smaller kickstarted games like Hyper Light Drifter end up being a lot more competent. What do you think this says about kickstarter?
That they need to keep industry veterans with heaps of money off their site.
Because smaller projects lack actual expectations from gamers.
Especially a brand new platforming game with Crash 4 It's About Time
I can't thank this game enough for that.
It's easy to give anything a second chance when you're the company deciding to hold back the property for ten years. They're not your friend.
You had a lot of fun making that intro, didn' t you?
What are your thoughts on Caddy overall? You seem not to like him all too much, or do you just disagree with him often enough that agreeing with him is odd for you?
I know he loves the Abe Odyssey Remake, Sly 4, says Wrath of Cortex is actually doing way too much rather than just copying 3 (though he does say it does retread a lot), and on Crash XS, which he just reviewed, he does like it (though that could be due to him being less hard on it for being an early GBA game and stuff)
I've noticed the entire gaming review community dislikes Caddicarus
Petronious seems to have a very strong dislike toward him

Naughty Dog actually revolutionized 3D animation when making Crash. Vertex animation over bone for everything.
12:22 Sonic Colors Ultimate devs shakin in their boots
I really liked the cutscenes here, especially Uka Uka and Aku Aku.
You are impatient
Where is that clip of Spyro from?
6:56, did I just witness a bloodborne nickolash impression?
I'm a simple woman, I see Mike Stoklasa I subscribe.
At last, someone told the truth. I'm late for 3 years or so, but still glad to see this.
I'm still furious at the people who insist the Nitros that randomly leap into orbit aren't a problem. Because it's my fault that the Nitro just jumped right into me mid jump. Fucked up so many time trials in 2.
This video is fantastic!!!
0:54
If you can make an RLM reference, you make an RLM reference.
yes
Hey wait a minute, are you dissing the Yikes! font now?
yea
@@mistergremm735 That's dookie my rookie
As someone who hasn't played either trilogy, I see what you're talking about with the visuals. It looks good in isolation but compared to the original it looks a bit lazy
2:26 Toy Story 4?
1:29 wait...was that a fucking Dr Henry Killinger reference?!?!?!
Crash 4 was trash
I think I understand your general opinions, but I’m having a hard time following the specific points you’re trying to make or understanding what each example is trying to illustrate. But thanks for covering this video though.
