One thing about Warped, in the original's 100% ending after Cortex and Uka Uka are banished the portal becomes a black hole and starts growing into the initial boss room before we find ourselves at Crash's house. In the N Sane Trilogy however, the portal banishes them, sucks in a bit of the machine and then we cut straight to Crash's house, we don't see the black grow into the boss room. Man, this is a series I can get into. I haven't played every crash bandicoot game but I've definitely played the originals and I can't wait to see what's in store this time!
Just wanted to chime in and say the game you were talking about at 44:20 is called "The End is Nigh", not "The End is Night" (speaking of the t at the and). Apart from that, I agree with you on nearly all of the points you mentioned about Snoman's video. The point that depth perception is pretty bad times, I do agree with that. But there actually is a shadow beneath Crash when he jumps, so I don't get why people keep saying there's like no help at all to tell how far your jump goes.
Those very tricky levels (backwards, bridge, etc) are part of the fun 😄 My sister was amazing at the bridge, using very little lives and I was good at the backwards running levels 👍 The need for collaboration was nice 😁

I think Snoman was criticizing the hit box issue in the Nsane Trilogy remake (before it was eventually fixed) because that's the only footage I see of him in this video. Snoman probably didn't grow up playing the original ps1 games when this wasn't a problem. So, he assumed the games were broken. I grew up playing the original games and brought the Nsane trilogy when it was still new. And the Nsane trilogy did have a terrible hit box issue that made the game feel broken. Simple jumps were hard to pull off. You had to press the X button and forward with all your might at every jump. Later it was fixed. So if you own the game now, you won't have this issue
I got the platinum in stormy ascent and uploaded it. Although the game wasn't built for it, it was so satisfying speedruinning the level and perfectly aligning all the cycles. It's so fun to do and even more fun to watch
I will never forget being a kid when Crash 2 first came out and playing it with my childhood friends... and the first time seeing that giant polar bear drop down instead of a boulder! We all screamed!
Phenomenal video. Agree with you on the difficult levels in Crash, made it far more memorable. Crash 3 will always be the best Crash game from the trilogy with the N Gin boss battle being one of the best boss levels ever designed for a 90s game.
1:38:32 you can change the controls in the original as well, just pause while in a jetpack level and there's an extra option. I'm just played through the original trilogy for the first time the past few days and as soon as I moved an inch I checked if I could change it.
I will admit. I’m not that good at 3D platformers but Crash 1 is a game that even though I’m not the best will always come back to and try again and again
Hey man, really good job. I'm not crazy about the remastered trilogy but I completely understand why fans love it. Nevertheless it was refreshing to hear a fan of the series who doesn't just suck up to the remaster as if it could do no wrong. Real quick, I have a theory about the location of the time twister. So in the events of Crash 2 it's pretty obvious that N. Brio is using the remains of Castle Cortex as a base of operations for the laser beam we see in the 100% ending (and if you noticed the location of the secret 6th warp room as a nice little easter egg). While we don't know where he is in the third installment, we do know that Cortex owned the three islands since the first game. It would make sense that Cortex would return to his islands after his space station is destroyed. This is why I believe that the time twister is located high up in the Castle Cortex, most likely built on the 6th warp room from Crash 2. Granted you can't see the other two islands in the background, but this would have been unnecessary in the design since they would be obstructed by the warp zones. The structure itself has the same brickwork as the castle and underneath contains a lab where the assistants we've seen since first game are manufactured. This brings me to my last point, there are multiple facets to the time twister itself. Not just in the warp room, but also in Cortex's boss battle arena and the cutscenes right after he is defeated. Did you notice anything about the arena? It has the exact same temple ruin aesthetic intertwined with Cortex's machinery from the first two games. If my speculation is correct, this is the only level in the game to not involve time travel and takes place in the original setting of the series. I know it's generally accepted that Cortex's castle was destroyed in the first game, but there's too many clues that it survived. Take the ancient ruins levels from Crash 2 where you can still see the castle standing in the background. Plus the fact that we know Cortex built his castle around the ancient ruins, it just makes sense that he would return here. I also believe that Citadel City from CTR is located in the upper level of the castle, but that's another story.
Well it's been some time, but I finally finished the video. Like with your other videos, your passion for the topics you discuss are very apparent and I like how you give a detailed analysis of the games without being padded. I also like how you've used your format for game reviewing. It has a nice mix of analysis as well as documentary with a nice dash of critic response. Most reviews that have these different aspects tend to segment them or the structure tends to be disjointed, but this video honestly was a smooth watch throughout. That alone is something to be proud of. I do remember first playing Crash on the GBA and never getting far and then playing, I think Twinsanity on Xbox. Other than that, Crash has been a series I heard about, but didn't give much thought to. I did later pick up a copy of 2, but never got far. Later I got one and three, but my experience was the same. Truth be told, I also found the games to feel somewhat stiff, probably my brain's reaction to 3D movement with a D-pad, and I mostly had written them off as overrated games. That said, watching your review has made me want to go back and give them another shot. Maybe this time will be better.
One big detail missed in the N.Sane Trilogy that wasn’t mentioned here is the secret warp room in Crash 2. It’s meant to be Cortex’s destroyed castle from Crash 1, as you can see the islands from the first game in the background. However they completely omitted the other islands in the remake, so it just then becomes a random warp room in the middle of nowhere. It’s a shame because it takes away the feeling of Crash 2 being a sequel to Crash 1. Seeing the old islands and Cortex’s destroyed castle really made it feel like we made a difference in our first adventure, but that display is lost here unfortunately. Minor nitpick but that always bothered me.
Oh Dylan you forgot about the cheese in warped! It's in the N. Same trilogy. In the Tiny Tiger fight in warped, you could hug the top left corner when the lions charged in the original and avoid the lions damaging you. In the N. Sane Trilogy, you can still do it, but the crowd throws cheese at you. I loved that little easter egg!
40:57 also, in the original crash 2 and 3, after completing them, bonuses don’t count as checkpoints. And since this is a remake, it wouldn’t make sense to leave that out.
40:37 OH MY GOSH THIS GUY- So he complains there's not enough Aku Aku masks/Checkpoints but here's the thing: If you die over 5 times on one segment you get an Aku Aku mask, 10 times gives you two masks every respawn. If you still keep dying the game will turn normal crates into checkpoint crates in order to allow you to keep going. If this guy had the patience to keep going he'd know this! The N sane Trilogy tries its absolute best to be as player friendly as possible by adding these things and this guy is STILL complaining oh my,,,, anyways great video so far, love how you talk about Crash, I almost cried at the part when you compared it to Dark Souls because that feeling in video games as a child,,, you captured that nostalgia perfectly 💜
Great video as always! So I have a bit of an interesting story with crash. I never grew up with a ps1, and was almost exclusively a Nintendo kid. I got a ps2 later in my preteens and got crash nitro kart, Twi sanity and tag team racing, loving all three and thinking that was a new Sony ip. Fast forward to my adult life and the release of the N. Sane Trilogy. I was so excited because I thought one of them was twinsanity. Needless to say, when I got home and bought it, I was very shocked to not only not get the game I expected, but also that I got three remastered platformers that kicked my Mario playing ass across the room. It was an interesting month.
I'm aware I'm a bit late to the video, but while they are perfectly fine in og Crash 1, the bridge levels in the N. Sane trilogy are genuinely harder due to the physics change. Some of those turtle jumps *are* actually very crappy as, as the other guy said, you do have to be very finicky when you jump on them. If you jump on them too far back you still might not make the jump. And I tell you what getting the platinum relic on that level is complete ass lmao
1:54:31 I’m impressed by how well this description matches the first trilogy of Touhou games on Windows. EOSD is the first title with basic features that is good but has some clear flaws. PCB fixes everything that was wrong and improves everything else to the point of being the most polished game. Then IN goes the extra mile and adds a ton of amazing unique mechanics, but also can be argued it went too far and complex with that.
Are we going to ignore the fact that all of the levels in Warped show you how Cortex dominated the whole world thanks to the lab assistants, the images or statues of him or other easter eggs like the ones in the pyramid levels or Fake Crash (after beating 105%)? And then discover the secret warp room with that factory of lab assistants being mass produced. That's some serious attention to detail for 1998. Everyone already knows that, sure, but I feel like it doesn't get the credit it really deserves.
excellent video. i like how you werent afraid to rake unfair criticism of the franchise over the coals like with snowman gaming’s video, but you also addressed fair criticisms in a respectful and understanding manner, like with Pariah’s video. I also enjoy Pariah’s content, I think his crash and sonic videos are great. My favorite game in the franchise would be Crash 2, with Crash 4 in a pretty close second.
I've showed my brother my progress on N Sane Trilogy the other day, and i've noticed i've made all the platinum Relics through ALL the levels. I don't really remember me doing it, but i know i did it. Meaning i freacking ate those games and easily speedruned every single levels of the trilogy, even the hardest. You've called me a Legend, i'm so proud !!! Thank you for you video, i almost was borned with those games in my hand. Also there is a lot to say, from bad to good about Crash 4, it might be really interresting. Btw I'm going to platinum that fucking game also, but he seems to be the most annoying to do
38:38 This might be the first person in recorded history to complain about Crash 2 Ripper Roo being too punishing and difficult lmao. It's literally the easiest boss fight in the series other than Papu Papu in Crash 1. Like it takes maybe 1-2 deaths to figure out what you're supposed to do, then after it's like "Wow I'm dumb, this is actually really easy." I watched his video, and that dude genuinely comes across as someone who dies a few times playing a game and instead of trying to get better they inhale copious amounts of copium and blame the game instead. I wont pretend like the N Sane trilogy doesn't have control jank (because it does) but most of his complaints were 90% skill issue and 10% control issue lmao. The fact he says that dangerous enemies need to be made more obvious when they have fucking swords, glowing yellow forcefields, flames, spikes, and electricity... like does he not realize that it's actually BAD game design to handhold players through everything instead of just figuring shit out with common sense? How the fuck could they make it more obvious without putting literal text above them saying "THIS ENEMY IS DANGEROUS!" I just don't think that dude is built for games like Crash lol, as dumb as that sounds. He seems like the kind of guy that only wants to play games where you can play on autopilot and still beat it.
this was a fantastic, and enthralling retrospective, I honestly could watch anything about crash for hours, i'm 27 now and back in the late 90's/early 2000's I was probably 4 or 5 when I was introduced to crash just video games in general for the first time via the second game and boy howdy was I bad at it, little did I know when I went back to the first game i'd have an even worse with that one lol but man did the N' sane trilogy finally make me actually legit get all the gems and keys as opposed to just using cheat codes lol
Funny thing about high road is that if you spend some time to learn jumping on rope, you can literally cheese the whole level. Seeing people complain about it specifically is hilarious
This was such a wonderful nostalgic retrospective! Watched it over a few days, I grew up playing Warped first and the franchise in general as it moved onto the ps2. In fact, Crash Bandicoot: Warped was one of my first ever video games and Crash Bandicoot is the mascot I grew up with instead of Mario and Sonic. I didn't actually get to play Crash 1 and 2 until my teenage years. Some cheesy moments in this video aside (and the annoying background flashing at points), this was a joy to watch! Can't wait to see more retrospectives. It would be really interesting to see other franchises covered too such as Jak & Daxter etc unless those have already been covered.
Great video overall but I do have some feedback that I'd like to offer. Now, I'm not a content creator myself, just a man with an opinion so feel free to take this all with a huge grain of salt. With that said, I think this whole video would be MUCH stronger if you exluded the nearly ten minute point by point takedown of another content creator's work. Let me be perfectly clear, I 100% agree with every point you made for the same reasons that you do, that's not my issue. My issue is that the whole rant is entirely unnecessary and comes off as a bit immature and Redditorish for lack of a better word. For younger and less mature viewers of your channel, I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it. I, for one, would have really enjoyed listening to such a defense years ago when I still didn't know how to process my feelings when someone had a different opinion than me on something I hold dear, especially if I felt that opinion was unfounded. That said, now that I'm a bit older I recognize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it's really worth no one's time and energy to be so combative over something as trivial as how another person feels about a video game of all things. For the majority of your audience, myself included, we have never even seen the video in question and didn't click onto this one to hear someone tear into a video we have no strong feelings on. If I wanted counter argument content of another specific work, I'd click onto a video that indicates as much. To us that just came to see what another content creator has to say about some games we're familiar with, it feels reductive and exhausting when you abruptly interrupt your entertaining and well scripted analysis to awkwardly transition into a section crapping on another creator's work from years ago. What's frustrating is that you yourself seem to be self aware enough to on some level understand this as well, as you preface your rant with "not to tear into a four year old video" and "not to be mean" which has the same energy as someone prefacing an offensive comment with "no offense but" as if the preface negates the following sentiment. My issue with the rant is that it isn't constructive and adds nothing to your video or the general Crash discourse at large. It would be one thing if the video in question was huge and influential enough to massively impact public perception of Crash to the point where it actively harms the IP but as it stands, we got an exceptional Crash 4 after his video and public perception of Crash is still overwhelming positive so what are you trying to prove here? If anything, it comes of as a self indulgent move of you seeing his video, it getting under your skin, and you deciding to use your platform to air out your grievances even if that wasn't the intent. If you felt the need to address his arguments in your video, you could have easily gotten the same effect by keeping it general instead of calling out one specific creator and taking a paragraph rather than 10 minutes because it really feels like you start to spin your wheels about a couple minutes into the rant. To your credit, immediately following the rant, you get right back into the very high quality critique and commentary that makes up the majority of your video but that does make the more poorly expressed rant stick out like a sore thumb in comparison. It feels like a lower quality and less experienced video essay creator plopped something in the middle of an otherwise much better work. I know this probably comes of as very harsh and overly anal, I'm sorry I don't mean for it to, it's just that in my mind it's such an obviously glaring flaw in an otherwise great video that I figured I'd voice my thoughts on it. Again, just one man's opinion, but in scrolling through the other comments, I can tell I'm not the only one that felt that way.
I know I'm late to the party, but stormy ascent didn't get replaced by slippery climb, it was the last level in the game right before cortex and after the great hall. This can be seen on a prototype version of the game that leaked a few years ago, it has every level in the game (unfinished of course) and stormy ascent is the very last one on the map, and slippery climb a few stages before it.
51:00 the arguments about the graphical changes are the reasons I always go back to the ps1 versions since I own all 3 and same goes for spyro. I can’t get into the remakes because theres something just so special about these original versions and their graphics
Good video but a note; Slippery Climb was always in the game. Stormy Ascent was originally a separate level, the last level before fighting Cortex and the Lab was originally before it. The broken tokens in the level are because the second Cortex tokens were originally here but were moved to Jaws of Darkness when it was removed. Slippery Climb had the red gem from the beginning
Bro thank you for that comment about snowman gaming. That original video frustrated me so much. I don't even like the n same trilogy for those exact hit box issue but if you suck this bad at the game there ain't no blaming the difficulty of the game
@1:10:00 the time trial idea originally came from the "plant food" level in crash 2 when you had to get to the end of the level in under a minute after that first checkpoint for the yellow gem. 💎 edit: i like your neo cortex voice btw.
Crash 2 was always my favorite for the reasons you mentioned - not being overwhelmed with vehicle levels and refining the formula. I am also very against time trials/speed challenges being required in games as it always just feels like a way to pad out playtime with existing resources, another hit against Crash 3 and why I have only done a single 100% run.
@@DylantheKnightOwl hi, Dylan! I’m currently trying to fully complete crash 2 in the N-sane trilogy and I’m enjoying it a lot! Where is the time stamp for when you talk about the n-sane trilogy?
Gotta love the potato quality commercials put between sections of the video. Jokes aside, really liked this video and am excited for anything you're planning to make in the future
With your description of the similarities between sonic and crash they actually kinda sound like the same thing mega man goes through, evil doctor, robot animals.
Classic series of games and great video analysis. I only ever got the crystals never got the gems then like 15 years later I decided I wanted to get the good ending on crash 2. It took me ever and I have to say it was one of the biggest letdown in gaming. The good ending was like 10 seconds
I think I'm gonna reinstall N-Sane Trilogy. I never played 1 because I assumed saving was still gated, bonuses were non-repeatable, and that the fucking bridge still had lackluster visibility for your shadow at times... But seeing the review and gameplay in action, they touched on basically every issue I saw in crash 1 without utterly breaking the game's difficulty... Although in fairness, I always assumed the bonuses were needed for the gem on PS1 lol.
getting the platinum relics not only on crash 1 but all the trilogy is so satisfying. Will i do it again? absolutely. I actually speedrun all 3 100% with plat relics. Am i fucking insane and i need therapy? you bet your ass i do.
@@DylantheKnightOwl there's also another challenging game but that's also a creepy game, called pathologic 2, mandalore gaming has a review on that one
I love the original trilogy, and Crash 2 will always be my favourite, but I found Crash 4 hugely disappointing. A majority of the levels don't feel like a Crash game, they don't have that sort of flow.
Growing up Crash 2 was easily my favourite, however after going back and platinuming all three games from the N.Sane trilogy, my favourite now is Crash 1. I just personally think that game has the best pure platforming levels out of the three
Ik it's been a year since this was uploaded, but the N Sane Trilogy does NOT have full 3d movement, you can still only move in 8 directions. I also gotta say, the game also has terrible depth perception. Not that it caused much issue tho, love the game
Big thanks to LogeyBerry for voicing Cortex in the story segments of this video!
Facts and the way he sorta broke character when he explained Crashes objective with the whole "And fucking shit up" that killed me 🤣

We need a new age of platformers. The remasters we've been getting bode well for that.
Agreed.
At least we got that Kangaroo game
This was a nice depature for the usual spooky stuff. Would love to see more game reviews in the future.

After seeing this video, I appreciate the contrasting colours for the levels so much more in the original trilogy.
“Tawna is furrybait.”
-Dylan, 2022
I mean, you’re not wrong.
don't forget the trophy bandicoot girls from CTR... 😮
Love getting so good that I could run through the levels without stopping or dying.
40:37 OH MY GOSH THIS GUY-
So he complains there's not enough Aku Aku masks/Checkpoints but here's the thing: If you die over 5 times on one segment you get an Aku Aku mask, 10 times gives you two masks every respawn. If you still keep dying the game will turn normal crates into checkpoint crates in order to allow you to keep going. If this guy had the patience to keep going he'd know this! The N sane Trilogy tries its absolute best to be as player friendly as possible by adding these things and this guy is STILL complaining oh my,,,,
anyways great video so far, love how you talk about Crash, I almost cried at the part when you compared it to Dark Souls because that feeling in video games as a child,,, you captured that nostalgia perfectly 💜
Thank you!
Thank you, and thank you for sharing your own story with Crash. I always love hearing others tales of how they got into stuff.
Amazing how sonic 2 and Crash 2 are the same in some ways, both sequels brought in their tech Savy sidekicks Tails and Coco.
Theres an achievement for pissing off cortex enough times crash 2 N sane trilogy they knew someone was gonna mess around with that
I'm actually glad you responded to the Snoman Gaming bit because I always kinda hated that video lol
based
Are we going to ignore the fact that all of the levels in Warped show you how Cortex dominated the whole world thanks to the lab assistants, the images or statues of him or other easter eggs like the ones in the pyramid levels or Fake Crash (after beating 105%)? And then discover the secret warp room with that factory of lab assistants being mass produced. That's some serious attention to detail for 1998. Everyone already knows that, sure, but I feel like it doesn't get the credit it really deserves.
Very true!
18:59 - Huh, Tiny Tiger and one of the Komodo Bros.
Oh hell yeahs, looking forward to watch it!!
great content 👍 the 2.5 hours of watching this video was definitely worth it good job
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
excellent video. i like how you werent afraid to rake unfair criticism of the franchise over the coals like with snowman gaming’s video, but you also addressed fair criticisms in a respectful and understanding manner, like with Pariah’s video. I also enjoy Pariah’s content, I think his crash and sonic videos are great. My favorite game in the franchise would be Crash 2, with Crash 4 in a pretty close second.
My grandpa introduced my sister, cousin and myself to this game and I will always remember this time 😊
I absolutely love the Dramatic irony that is the plot of crash 2.
The good ending in Crash 2 shows 6 colored gems. I guess that means Brio had the 6th one already from the start of the game?
This video is top tier. Excellent work.
Thank you so much!
very good editing
I know I'm late to the party, but stormy ascent didn't get replaced by slippery climb, it was the last level in the game right before cortex and after the great hall.
This can be seen on a prototype version of the game that leaked a few years ago, it has every level in the game (unfinished of course) and stormy ascent is the very last one on the map, and slippery climb a few stages before it.
I feel like you subliminally bomb me with all the flicker
Fun fact about Crash 2's Blue Gem: The original game actually will give you a hint if you already have the silver gem by changing the total to X/0.
"Might as well pull out a marker and draw a big ol D on my forehead like Dr Neo Co....ya know, that didn't come out.....nvm" 😂
Crash and Cortex
Chaos and Law
Omg this is an SMT game the whole time
51:00 the arguments about the graphical changes are the reasons I always go back to the ps1 versions since I own all 3 and same goes for spyro. I can’t get into the remakes because theres something just so special about these original versions and their graphics
This is basically a movie. Let me grab me popcorn
edit: i like your neo cortex voice btw.
GREAT stuff dude. I hope to see you cover the Spyro trilogy in the near future.
easiest way to beat the bridge level is walk along the ropes
Lex luthor when crash forgets his crystals.
What is the song around 16:00?
Crash 2 was always my favorite for the reasons you mentioned - not being overwhelmed with vehicle levels and refining the formula. I am also very against time trials/speed challenges being required in games as it always just feels like a way to pad out playtime with existing resources, another hit against Crash 3 and why I have only done a single 100% run.
Thats understandable. I obviously really enjoy them, but it's an acquired taste you might say lol.
Thanks for your thoughts!
@@DylantheKnightOwl hi, Dylan! I’m currently trying to fully complete crash 2 in the N-sane trilogy and I’m enjoying it a lot! Where is the time stamp for when you talk about the n-sane trilogy?
Crash 3 is designed well enough, so the time trials never bugged me. Doing the time trials in Wrath of Cortex is a chore.
Gotta love the potato quality commercials put between sections of the video. Jokes aside, really liked this video and am excited for anything you're planning to make in the future
With your description of the similarities between sonic and crash they actually kinda sound like the same thing mega man goes through, evil doctor, robot animals.
I loved Crash Bandicoot. Can not wait for the 8th.
Gotta say my fav crash game is Crash 2.
It's funny that people think the bridge stages are the hardest stages in the game when Slippery climb is a million times worse, imo.
Retrospective ofcourse
Classic series of games and great video analysis. I only ever got the crystals never got the gems then like 15 years later I decided I wanted to get the good ending on crash 2. It took me ever and I have to say it was one of the biggest letdown in gaming. The good ending was like 10 seconds
What is that dingdang whistle song
Ok so I just had this thought... Is N Gin Dexter from Dexter's Lab all grown up? No need to answer this is now canon.
lol
1:30:22 bRinG mE cRyStalS!
What's that piano music in the background?
you want challenge? try playing UnderRail, it's not only challenging but the dialogue is either fun or interesting.
Sounds pretty interesting! Thanks for the suggestion!
@@DylantheKnightOwl there's also another challenging game but that's also a creepy game, called pathologic 2, mandalore gaming has a review on that one
so rad
I love these games but the guy is right, the depth perception does suck
How so?
@@DylantheKnightOwl I don’t know what that means but yes
"are you aware that sony playstation has more than 150 games?"
maybe they should just sell that console again
I love the original trilogy, and Crash 2 will always be my favourite, but I found Crash 4 hugely disappointing. A majority of the levels don't feel like a Crash game, they don't have that sort of flow.
They just don't make those commercials like that anymore...
Growing up Crash 2 was easily my favourite, however after going back and platinuming all three games from the N.Sane trilogy, my favourite now is Crash 1. I just personally think that game has the best pure platforming levels out of the three
How do you play Stormy ascent on switch?
You climb a literal castle during a stormy night. Still easier, too.
Ik it's been a year since this was uploaded, but the N Sane Trilogy does NOT have full 3d movement, you can still only move in 8 directions. I also gotta say, the game also has terrible depth perception. Not that it caused much issue tho, love the game
Noticed the video said part 1, does this mean you’re gonna do the other crash games as well or? Loved the video by the way!
Yep there is gonna be more parts very soon!
love it
