Something it took me a bit to discover-while firing the Triple Volley art, if you're in aim mode you can actually briefly adjust your aim between volleys. You can even enter aim mode by hitting the button during the art's execution, which is great if you start it off and then the monster moves unexpectedly. Makes it a lot easier to make full use of all three shots, and makes it possible to use in less certain openings, which means you're getting more use of the art throughout the fight.
I just wanna say, Thank You so much for all these guides. The game itself does a really bad job at teaching you like, any of the details you show in your guides, and I can't say enough how much I appreciate how well you've produced these vids!
after giving it a shot myself, yeah. and i really didn't have trouble aiming those aerial shots. if i hadn't decided to go for HBG as my gunner weapon this time around, i'd proably make a rapid bow set for aerial shenanigans.
if your ever new to gunner weapons bow is the way to go ive tried LGB before and it lasted me a while but i kinda dropped it kinda difficult unless you have a New 3DS XL (which i do) and the Ammo thing was a big dampener
My first MH game was 4U on the 3ds. I struggled to figure out how to do my moves purposely, and only felt good/fast/effective using dual Blades...then someone made a post on reddit about making Bow controls more intuitive a la dragon's dogma and OH MY GOD my world changed. I ended up using a bow exclusively for nearly 300 hours before I got bored. I love the depth of combat in this game. I cannot wait to snipe some shit.
Fellipe Ladeira Yep, here you go: www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/2y0f10/how_to_make_aiming_with_the_bow_intuitive_with_a/ I hope it helps! You will need the CPP or the new 3DS with the C-stick for best results. As someone who initially thought the game had clunky controls, this really helped me learn how to use a bow and feel more comfortable as a ranged class.
Thanks. I found that one when you mentioned it and its funny because I play the bow since Freedom Unite and the whole idea of shooting with R makes me unconfortable. I guess I'm just used to using X for many years now. I've tried the type 2 and everything else form the post but I'm just too used with the "normal" way haha.
That makes sense and yeah with my first MH being 4U I never had a previous experience to compare it to or have muscle memory from. For me it felt like Dragons Dogma (another capcom game) once I tried it from that post. So i guess that was my experience lol
My favorite thing about the bow (and there's a lot to love) is that when you are at ideal distance and land a spread shot or pierce shot, that screen shake, all the flashing... oh man. It's sooooo gratifying!
I can't wait to try out Adept Style on bow! I've been so excited to try it out ever since I saw you use it in that one livestream. Man, can't MHGen come any sooner!
i swear, your tutorials are the best. i just recently started bow and thought the aerial style was best. lokking at your video now makes me feel like a horrible hunter XD
Thankyou for this. I was waiting for this to compare the differences between MH4u bow to MHX bow. Looks like as a bow main i'm going to have a whole lot more fun in MHX then I am in MH4u.
dude you're killing me :D I haven't watched any footage of MHX except the Trailer, and you keep uploading vids about it. It's so hard to resist, but i can't unsub.
Totally play it (if you don't already). You definitely don't have the same damage output as the other styles, but the aerial shots do hit quite well if you get used to it. The most important thing is the swag though. Nothing looks cooler than jumping off a monsters head and slamming it to the ground with point blank rapid-arrows. More supporty, but I'd say you can make it work.
I've found that gunner weapons - the bow in particular - are really good for getting used to Adept style. Since you should be at mid to long range, monsters will generally have to use attacks like obvious lurches or slow projectiles to reach you. Naturally some monsters are trickier to dodge than others, but in most cases the principle of it still stands.
Thank you for fueling my hype for bow. I started using bow when I was in mh3u not knowing what I was doing til I got into mh4u. Now in Generations I got a good handle what I'll probably be doing. Thanks again ^_^
Having played MH games before using mostly lance and long sword, this video made me try out bows in the MHG demo. Needless to say this made me convert to the bow. Thanks for the info!
I dunno if someone's said it already, but there is a reason to use the Arrow Swipe in Aerial Style: You can then go into a back hop and then a super back hop to Lvl 3 Charge. This puts you a good distance away from the monster as well. So the combo is to vault, do your downward shot, Arrow Swipe, back hop and then super back hop into a lvl 3.
I pretty much only use aerial style, because I like flying through the air, shoot downwards, then either shoot again in the air at an angle to move away or I slam down with the melee. Makes mounting more frequent, and it just feels awesome. I also love aerial with the duel swords, spinning around slashing wild, then landing into another spin and attacking the legs. So cool.
hey gaijin, i dont know if you already know this and i know its already late vut whenever you equip a specific coating lets say poison or pain, whenever you use the melee attack of the bow the equipped coating applies. Poison would be good for hunting vespoids and the like and i think the most usefull coating for this one is paid. you no longer need a paintball, you just stab a monster! hope this helps as well^^ and i dont know if this applies to future mh games. i hope so
Great video as always GH, but I personally don't think you did Aerial any justice. I've only played the demo, so you know more than me. But landing the downward shots isn't difficult at all; it's a lot easier to land than the hammer or SnS aerial. It also mainly keeps you in the same place, so you can continually roll and leap off a monster, building up mount status. I say you should give Aerial Bow another try. Plus it's so god damn fun! I feel like a ninja while playing Aerial Bow! : ]
The aerial style for the bow seems to be maybe for medium to large monsters when you have rapid or spread allowing for multiple mount its or for breaking the backs of some monsters. I think it would be good for a more supportive bow build.
Aerial Style might be the best to actually run when you're using a Spread Bow type because usually you'll be very close to monsters. If the monsters are mid-big size your arrows might not miss as much and provide easier mounts due to spreading. Also since Aerial will only do Lv2 charge while airborned you can get rid of Focus Armor skills for another damaging skill for more power and just stick to Accelerated Rain. Besides having evasion Aerial Style also provides another way to avoid moves from monsters if you time your jumps correctly to land in the opposite side of the monster. So i think aerial might not be as bad as it seems for bow, but of course you need to know the monster well for this.
Little tip for Aerial style users. ALWAYS keep locked on to the monster. When you jump off a monster and use the downward shot followed by the mid air shot (A then R), your R attack will always go in the direction your camera is facing. So if the monster moves just behind you after you jump off it, tap the L trigger to face your camera towards the monster that way you will always shoot at the monster. I have a regular 3DS XL and no circle pad pro extension so this is the easiest way to orient myself to face the monster mid-air. Thats with bow controls type 2 btw. Also keep in mind that you can delay both the moves (although you really shouldn't delay the first attack) just before you hit the ground. Or use the A attack at the peek of your jump to get some extra height. You can stay in the air for about 4 seconds o.o
I find striker bow with a pierce type bow to be pretty good, with trinity Raven, accelerate rain, and that art where u do an invincible dodge and keeps your weapon drawn makes it pretty aggressive from afar. It's fun
The Storge S gunner set is definitely great when it comes to using Rapid bows. It gives Normal/Rapid Up, Peak Performance and Rationer. With a FastCharge +5 OOO charm, you can fit Focus and TrueShot Up onto it without needing a slot on your weapon!
I personally think Aerial is more of a support style like striker and is best suited towards multi player. Between the bow's large list of status effects. flash bombs, traps and mounting a single aerial archer could lock down a monster for quite a while. Status attack up, felyne specialist and ammo saver can all easily extend the use of those status attacks as well. The melee attack and close range coating is also good with aerial. Gunner armor isn't as crap as people make it out to be. As long as your hp is high and your not taking attacks that your weak to or hyper attacks you'll be fine. Just learn when you can approach a monster and eat for defender if your having trouble.
Honestly I think Bow's in MHX are stronger than they have ever been, some of the fastest speedrun times have been with the bow in MHX, ESPECIALLY with the Teostra bow, that weapon is stupid good in this game
You give aerial bow a lot of flack for requiring you to be up close in gunner armor, but the bow aerial is actually really great for positioning. If you get the timing down you have pretty good control over where you land, so you can be in a monster's "safe zone" when you land. If you keep the momentum up you can basically indefinitely keep yourself in blind spots and be pretty safe against any monster without a lot of attacks with vertical reach. The biggest part is learning when to use the downward shot to halt momentum, and when to delay it so that you can fly over the monster and land behind it. It makes a lot of fights way safer when you can spend the entire fight behind the monster.
I love using the bow and my favorite shot is the blast arc. can you do a video on the arcs. it would be very useful because I have my own theories but I don't have anyway to prove them.
Bow has been my weapon of choice since MH3U, but man am I glad that MHG seems to fix my few gripes with the weapon. I always had trouble with faster, close range monsters (Tigrex, Nargacuga etc.) and the Adept Style will help me keep the pressure on (assuming the Perfect Dodge isn't too hard to execute in the heat of battle) and with Blade Wire I hopefully won't have to rely on my friends as much for cutting tails
Your guides are fantastic, this guide is what made me decide to finally try out bows again. Granted, I haven't been a gunner since MHFU, do you have any tips for someone who hasn't played for so long?
striker shot could be interesting with ko king, assuming that skill is still in the game as well as status arc shots. None the less adept seems the way to go most of the time
I believe that the aerial slash with the bow does decent damage, but I can't seem to find a motion value for it on google. Back in MH4U, I use the jumping slash a lot, but I never knew how much damage it did.
i always go for pierce shot bows. i don't know what it is about the other types, they just don't click as much as lining up a head to tail shot or a wing to wing shot. thankfully, bow is never my main, just something i love doing on the side.
No LBG and HBG tuto yet, do you plan to do it or not, i'd like to hear what you think about it... Anyway great works, learns some good info to improve my hunting style, so thank you very much ^^
I've got a set specifically designed for aerial bow that gives me airborne, ammo saver, focus, evade extender, divine blessing and mounting master and it makes the weapon/style matchup SO much more fun... and viable!
A tip for those using 'classic' bow controls. It is always okay to roll out of a fully charged shot if it means saving your biscuits from fainting. However, that may be difficult, seeing that your thumb is already on the X button, and releasing it to hit the B button would make you shoot and get you hit. To deal with this problem, take your index finger off the R button and place it over the X button half way while still holding X down with your thumb. Carefully slide both fingers until your index finger is completely covering X and your thumb is free. Congratulations, you can now hit B to roll out of the way. This will take a lot of practice to do quickly, but once you do, you can go entire hunts without getting hit.
You can also press Y while charging, which is much easier than your way. This move was added in 4U and it really helps. Or otherwise you can enable type 2 controlls in which you can simply charge by holding R. :D
Aerial Combo ( BB, A, L, R) My experience on Aerial Bow... the most fun and very acrobatic play-style and it is similar to insect-glaive mount attacks. Just tap double-B (always be near in front of the monster to unlock your jumps) then on air, press A (aerial downward shot) quickly L for aim then R at the right time gravity hit. Your TopScreen at middle is always your Crosshair. Practice well with precision. :D
Awesome tutorial Gajin ^^. Just out of curiosity, you mentioned in the variant Glavenus video that you would showcase his equipment. Any idea on when that'd be?
Your tutorials are getting better with each new version of Monster Hunter. By now, you are probably the go-to person for most players, new and veteran, when it comes to data and gameplay analysis. I have a few questions outside the content of this video, but related to it: Is bow still inferior to bowguns in terms of damage and utility? I like the bow gameplay better than bowguns, but it always felt underwhelming in previous games. When I played the MHX demo it felt much more smoother and appealing, and the Arts make it even better. But, if it's still incredibly weak compared to Bowguns, I might skip it. I got the actual game now, but I find that coatings and ammo cost too much to play ranged from the start (I can't always pay my quest fee). With that in mind, when would be a good time to pick up an ranged weapons?
The heavy shots weren't terribly appealing when I first saw them, but I'm finding myself really liking them. On top of the fun of just shredding those breakable parts, the arc actually can make it possible to hit from the hip against monsters that are normally really hard to hit without manual aim-instead of shooting over that Nibelsnarf's back, you can just manage your distance and drop those shots right on top of it, and you can fight effectively in sloped zones like that one in the Dunes without having to always be tweaking your manually aim..
A small tip for when you make a new guide video is to Not say "this is the best *Insert item here* in the game" because some (at least me) just wanna watch the video without "spoilers" and/or just learn about the weapon without well spoilers. I know most probably don't care but some might. Wat he's this on release and never said anything but going through your videos again I just wanted to speak my mind :) great video nonetheless!
What i meant with that is that if you know what's the best weapon you never experiment with any other weapons. Cause all you'll do is go straight for that one single weapon. But w/e.
Hey Have you ever thought of having a livestream to play with your subscribers when the Monster Hunter X comes out in the west? Great video btw and looking forward to your Charge Blade tutorial!
I just bought my first 3ds and this is my first game, I did not know they even made games like this on 3ds this game is great. already have 40 hours in it
I like using the bow called seahorse harp, the dlc weapon in hm4u, it can use all coatings, decent dmg, and with loading it has a powerful piercing shot
I've played through MHFU and MH4U and was a blade master throughout both games. Deciding to switch to gunner this game is going to be great. I'm already enjoying bow. Adept is so satisfying!
Same here I was blademaster in 3U and 4U so I decided to main the bow and it is hella fun! I killed the village Glavenus with 20 seconds left, and it was so intense...
+Pikapie Lol. I was using striker style so I didn't have the power shot to boost my DPS (I didn't even know about it), and I was using the LvL 2 narg bow because I didn't start farming the fated four's weapons until I went online where it was much easier. Finally, I don't know why, but I was very stingy with using my coatings for some reason.
I only just started using weapons other than Insect Glaive in MH4U, and holy crap, Bow is way more fun than I thought it would be! The only problem I've got is that it's expensive. Really looking forward to trying it out in Generations.
Well yeah, but at least it's a one-time investment. With a bow, you're either holding your teammates back, or you're paying for another 50 power coatings after every hunt.
Yeah, I figured out my problem. I was just rushing through the guild key quests, not doing any optional or caravan quests. I was losing all my money to equipment, not the coatings.
aerial bow is best man, can do more damage then all the styles of bow, plus you forgot to mention coating a arrow but not using it and using melee will active the coating it had but will not waste a coating, meaning a single paint hit will paint the monster without wasting it
I was deadset on going Adept bow when the Switch version releases, but losing the arc shot has gotten me immensely discouraged about it. Seems I might go with the Guild style instead.
Really good video, Thank you very much. just a question. Seregios bow has just 2 charge levels, does it mean that with lvl 2 charge you are doing 100% damage being that second charge the highest charge? (just ignore Load Up).
Nice! So now the bow can cut stuff without having to make that sad excuse of an attack! It's still hard to see how everything works without playing it yet, but the bow is more awesome! I'm a bow user, but it doesn't feel like it was meant for solo hunts, maybe I just suck at setting my skills. But now it looks like it's finally got a well needed buff.
I originally wanted to use Adept because of the evade. something that will help bow users a lot. BUT i actually use arc alot for status. So that said, im probably in the minority but i think il either be sticking to Guild, or actually try striker. I still have my arc, plus i can use the rain art and the one that can cut. but il definitely try all 4 and see what suits me most
well nice tutorial, except that I think the ranged jump atck can be usefull when u want to grind monsters. great job anyway and thanks for all those tips ! ^^
Its kinda weird that there's such a huge amount of variation in bows for different monster sizes, and yet its the one weapon where there is an unquestionable universal best for each game.
What's the motion values for arc shots? The three different types. It's actually satisfying to hit so I'd like to know. Can't find it in the video. If it's there lemme know thanks.
These tutorials are very easy to understand. Your video skills have clearly improved.
+Andrew Difrek thanks!
+gaijin hunter a lot. thank you!

I never thought of that but you're right!
gaijin hunter dude, can you tell me what set you used in the game?
Well I'm here coz of MHGU, so you're right.
I got a hunting bow ad before this video. that feels strangely satisfying

definitely, I used it to solo Narga in the demo, and MAAAAAAAN was it fun

MHGen really got me considering maining a bow now. i feel that its getting the attention it deserves now.
4U already had me in love with this weapon. But X/Gen has me digging all of the gunner weapons. I definitely want to try Bow and Heavy Bowgun.
Trinity Raven is called Triple Volley in the MHGen Demo.
Honestly I think Bow's in MHX are stronger than they have ever been, some of the fastest speedrun times have been with the bow in MHX, ESPECIALLY with the Teostra bow, that weapon is stupid good in this game

The biggest part is learning when to use the downward shot to halt momentum, and when to delay it so that you can fly over the monster and land behind it. It makes a lot of fights way safer when you can spend the entire fight behind the monster.
I basically can't fight the Garuga anymore without aerial bow it simplifies the fight so much.
I always had trouble with faster, close range monsters (Tigrex, Nargacuga etc.) and the Adept Style will help me keep the pressure on (assuming the Perfect Dodge isn't too hard to execute in the heat of battle) and with Blade Wire I hopefully won't have to rely on my friends as much for cutting tails
i think ima switch from duel blades to bow for a while now thanks for the guide mate
main'd bow in MH4U and i'm really excited to hop back in with new techniques
Now I'm definitely playing bow when MHG comes out. Thx for the tutorials :D
None the less adept seems the way to go most of the time
I am a little disappointed to hear that there is a "hands down" best bow in the game. I enjoy it where there is a top tier of bows to choose from.
Anyway great works, learns some good info to improve my hunting style, so thank you very much ^^
thanks for the vid, making me want to try bow now! looks really fun to play with.
Well. Disregard everything I just said, then. I guess the 3U bow has given me some habits.
+Walrus Wraith
Well, I did it the same way back in 3U. ;)
Aerial Combo ( BB, A, L, R)
My experience on Aerial Bow... the most fun and very acrobatic play-style and it is similar to insect-glaive mount attacks.
Love your tutorials waiting for Insect Glaive
I love it when u upload videos 😁
Your tutorials are getting better with each new version of Monster Hunter. By now, you are probably the go-to person for most players, new and veteran, when it comes to data and gameplay analysis.
I have a few questions outside the content of this video, but related to it:
Is bow still inferior to bowguns in terms of damage and utility?
Can you also make tutorial for bowguns?
I feel that Light bowgun is pretty great in MHgen
This was very well done. Have a thumbs up and a new sub :)
Love your videos man. Are you going to be doing light or heavy bowgun tutorials?
A small tip for when you make a new guide video is to Not say "this is the best *Insert item here* in the game" because some (at least me) just wanna watch the video without "spoilers" and/or just learn about the weapon without well spoilers. I know most probably don't care but some might. Wat he's this on release and never said anything but going through your videos again I just wanted to speak my mind :) great video nonetheless!
Alatreon What do you mean "Spoiler?"
What i meant with that is that if you know what's the best weapon you never experiment with any other weapons. Cause all you'll do is go straight for that one single weapon. But w/e.
Hey
Have you ever thought of having a livestream to play with your subscribers when the Monster Hunter X comes out in the west? Great video btw and looking forward to your Charge Blade tutorial!
I just bought my first 3ds and this is my first game, I did not know they even made games like this on 3ds this game is great. already have 40 hours in it
I like using the bow called seahorse harp, the dlc weapon in hm4u, it can use all coatings, decent dmg, and with loading it has a powerful piercing shot
Gaijin hunter, is the seahorse harp in mhx?
Could you do a SnS tutorial? Been looking forward to seeing that.
thank you based capcom for descending to earth and giving each bow a power shot.
Thank yo, much apreciated. It was an amazing video, can we see Charge Blade(axe) or Sword and Shield next?
very nice voice, I can relax just hearing to it :D
I've played through MHFU and MH4U and was a blade master throughout both games. Deciding to switch to gunner this game is going to be great. I'm already enjoying bow. Adept is so satisfying!
Same here I was blademaster in 3U and 4U so I decided to main the bow and it is hella fun! I killed the village Glavenus with 20 seconds left, and it was so intense...
Good for you, glad you enjoyed it! But it took you 49 mins 40 secs to kill a glavenus... How come? Only took me 10 for villagae Glavenus, not to brag.
Whoa now, an IG main can't say another weapon is expensive. We've got it rough.
Well yeah, but at least it's a one-time investment. With a bow, you're either holding your teammates back, or you're paying for another 50 power coatings after every hunt.
+jediyoshi64 But those things are cheap? Buyable supply items shouldn't ever be a problem once you've done a few hunts.
Yeah, I figured out my problem. I was just rushing through the guild key quests, not doing any optional or caravan quests. I was losing all my money to equipment, not the coatings.
LMAO "i won't laugh, it kinda sucks"
awesome finally seeing you a bit honest
I want to main that in MHX when it comes to the west ! Can't wait
Just wondering, when's the light bow gun/heavy bow gun tutorials coming out?
Hi GaijinHunter! Love your work as usual!
Do you plan on doing a tutorial for HBG/LBG too?
aerial bow is best man, can do more damage then all the styles of bow, plus you forgot to mention coating a arrow but not using it and using melee will active the coating it had but will not waste a coating, meaning a single paint hit will paint the monster without wasting it
I was deadset on going Adept bow when the Switch version releases, but losing the arc shot has gotten me immensely discouraged about it. Seems I might go with the Guild style instead.
Are there no tutorials for LBG and HBG for MHGen? I came here specifically for that! :(
yes me aswell :/
Whats the armor you are wearing end game for these bows, im in need of some goals nice vid btw very clear explanation :)
Thank you for all these tutorials! I can't decide between the dual blades and the bow :/
Joseph Armishaw both?
Love your channel man!
when do you going to do a tutorial for ligh bowgun or heavy bowgun?
You can also dodge out of a charge with y instead of b.
That was mentioned.
Its kinda weird that there's such a huge amount of variation in bows for different monster sizes, and yet its the one weapon where there is an unquestionable universal best for each game.
Great work on the tutorial Gaijin Hunter! Can we expect you to be outputting tutorials every other day or once a week?
+Ravemaster620 Maybe a few a month. Work has been busy so it's been hard to find time, but i'll have them all up before launch
+gaijin hunter Thanks for the heads up
What's the motion values for arc shots? The three different types. It's actually satisfying to hit so I'd like to know. Can't find it in the video. If it's there lemme know thanks.
