    Pleased you enjoyed our local ruin. Thank you for the drone footage, I've never seen it from that angle before. There is an information board with writing on it, but you missed it. It's visible in the background to the immediate left of you when you're sitting down at the end. Looks like you found a bit of information online anyway.
    I'm glad you found the Soper obelisk. John Burgess Soper was a wealthy Victorian industrialist and landowner who basically owned the entire area of South View and built affordable houses for poor people. Most of what he built has since been completely demolished and replaced but there are two roads in the immediate vicinity named after him, Burgess Road and Soper Grove. He and his wife Ann (who is on the next side of the obelisk) were possibly also great great great grandparents of mine, although I've not been able to verify that.
    The cemetery is now decommissioned, making it more of an interesting park, so it's a popular place for dog walkers.

    Hi Paul, the footpath with the markings are headstone. The cemetery had changes years ago and instead of removing the headstones they laid the footpath with them. My late dad worked for Basingstoke and dean council who laid those headstones

    Lovely video Paul. Basingstoke doesn't have much in the way of interesting architecture, being a relatively new town, but this graveyard is beautiful. It is a shame that the church authorities haven't put up more info about the ruin. Still a peaceful place to go. Thanks. 😃

    • @katewolfspirit6722
      @katewolfspirit6722 Месяц назад

      I'm Basingstoke born and bred, you are very wrong about it being a new town! Jane Austen was born in the nearby town of Steventon in 1775 and often visited Basingstoke to attend Ball's in the Town Hall with her sister Cassandra.
      In addition, the town was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, it has held a regular weekly market since the year 1214! It still exists to this day.
      And let's not forget during the Civil War, there was the siege of Basing House from 1643-1645. The ruins can be visited including the Tudor tunnels

    • @elisabethhopson5639
      @elisabethhopson5639 Месяц назад

      @@katewolfspirit6722 Sorry, I did not know that Basingstoke went that far back. When I was at school in the 60's and 70's, it was always known as Basingstoke New Town, just like Milton Keynes and Welwyn Garden City. When you drive into Basingstoke, all you see are buildings less than 60 years old from when Basingstoke was included in the London overflow planning from 1944. There are a few nice Georgian buildings around the market area near Jane Austins statue, but on the whole, the town does not advertise its' ancient past, which is why it gets missed. Sorry.

    Just a TIP! Next time you go to a cemetery, take brush (and cloth) and a little bottle of vinegar with you! With the vinegar and brush you might get text on these headstones readable! Always use a cloth to wipe it dry... 😊

    I clicked on this video as Basingstoke was mentioned .. then you said you were ex RAF .... My dad was a Londoner who joined the RAF for his national service. He ended up stationed at Odiham and Blackbushe Airports, Where he made history being a F.I.D.O opperater. It was while he was here that he met and married my mum, a local girl from Yateley. After marriage they moved to dad's roots here in the Eastend. Mum hated london so when she passed away we took her back home to Heathlands at Yateley. A year later dad passed away and his wish was to part burried with mum and part scattered at his beloved Blackbushe, which we did last year. thought you might like the story being a Hampshire lad ... so to an ex 'brylcream boy' from the very proud daughter of an ex 'brylcream boy' .. Per Ardua Ad Astra .... also end note been following your content for a few years now and always a real intresting and captivating video.

    A good and interesting video - Some thoughts - Wondering if you could visit the Cemetery at the old Netley hospital - while as far as I’m aware no one really famous is buried there, there’s a lot of history, also the Naval Cemetery on Portland where the sailors from the Sidon disaster are interred , both places I think have atmosphere - also possibly prison grounds - the executed where often buried but in unmarked graves. Here in Reading or around we have George Cole, Sue Lloyd and Ronald Alan
