Thanks for corroborating what I always believed about the flowerstalk coming from the ground level on S.minor. I have posed this as a possible identification trait with many people and never had anyone confirm it. I have never seen a S. palmetto flower with less than a couple feet of trunk, and even then the stalk emerged from the trunk , not the ground level. I have actually grown a couple of S. minor var. Louisiana that did develop very short (2.5’) trunks, and did display somewhat costapalmate leaves. I am not familiar with how science says this variant came to be, but other than the squatty trunk and semi-costapalmate frond structure , it was a definite minor, with an overall height of 10’ and dark green/ bluish leaves 6-7’ across ( 25 y.o.)
Great information!
Thanks
As always great info can't wait till I can identify mine 🤗🇺🇸♥️🌴🌴🌴🌴
Woohoo
There’s an absolutely gigantic sabal palm at my local science museum, it doesn’t have much trunk, but the fronds are huge, at least 4ft across
Nice! They can get big
Great info, wandering , how many years for sabal palmetto to bloom?
Depends on growth rate I’m guessing minimum 7-10 years for a highly cared for palm in good environment
@@tntropics - I've had a couple that attained 3' of trunk and they never bloomed.
Thanks for showing Sabal sp birmingham .
No problem Rob. Those pics of your palmetto always inspired me.

Yes definitely if you see a flower stalk coming out of the ground I don't think it could be a S. palmetto. Thanks for the info on the Louisiana
