He’s a handsome with beautiful eyes. He really should be in the wild in his natural habitat but, too late now, he wouldn’t survive being caged up too long. ❤️🦁
In fact, this statement (except for the compliments,) is completely misguided. If this lion were released into the wild, he would likely be dead in less than a month due to never learning hunting skills or having a pride to hunt with. He is not caged, he has a plenty big space as the Oregon zoo is AZA accredited and therefore must follow their guidelines. Along with this, many species of animals (Lions included) actually have longer lifespans in captivity! Look it up.
You do know that it be better for them to be caged up than in the wild right? Lots of lions are dieing from diseases and poachers. Also humans are taking there land where it's becoming smaller and smaller for them. Which means inbreeding. Not very healthy for a majestic animal to die like that. It's better to have them caged up like this. Trust me.
@@chrism2809 Yeah an older male like that even with hunting skills would be dead very quickly. All the people that always say it would be so much better for them in nature have never watched the lives that lions live in nature. Its brutal even for the king. 70% of lion cubs die. The males in the wild have a short reign and then end up becoming nomads/scavengers at best and usually end up starving or are outright killed by other lions. In a zoo they don't starve. They live longer and they always have female companionship. If I was a lion I know which one I would choose.
@@edgonzalez3820 A lot of the time in the wild the males get ganged up on by the females and killed, but in captivity it has been proven that they form stronger bonds with the females and are more respectuful of them!
All zoos need to strongly enforce having visitors whisper or keep silent. It is so annoying hearing people, including children talking loudly. If humans are bothered by this I can only imagine how bothersome it is for the animals. I'd much rather be in quietness, listening to the animals.
Agreed. I speak quietly at the zoo and try not to cover up the sounds of the animals. So frustrating when people are yacking loudly. I remember missing the awesome call of a kookaburra because some brat starting shrieking when she noticed it was close to the catwalk in the bird section. The bird was about to sing then flew off as the girl starting shouting. I gave her a nasty look and moved on.
TheRivrPrncess yep exactly. Just went to the zoo a little while ago. Obnoxious kids running wild because of obnoxious parents with no sense of respect for anything other than their little brats. Carlin said it right: there is entirely too much focus on children these days. Oh yeah, and the Disney references....yuk! The Lion King is not reality. Throw your kid in with the lovely Disney animals you see in the zoo and see how friendly they really are. Oh, they would just love my kid. Blaach! Giving people dirty looks is nice but maybe we should start to get a bit vocal.with these rude parents.
The behavior where he stands is actually training him so that they can do exams and inspections. They do this so they dont have to sedate him to check for cuts, tumors and the like. This zoo has some problematic things about it, but this training is definitely pretty standard.

+Jade Zee in the wild he would be more likely to starve. If their numbers were many, then that wouldn't be a problem. Poachers, trophy hunters, and a constantly changing environment, even moreso because of us, close in on them from all sides, threatening extinction of the most unnatural sort. Perhaps, though, one say when we learn to care for the land on which we live, we'll see so many lions out there in the wild that we'll have no need for zoos, as visitors would no longer be impressed.
I've been reading thru the comments and it seems that for some reason everyone just ignores the poor female lions......even in this video the only time they put the camera on the female lion was when the male lion growled at her.....the audience acted as if the female lion was not even there.....why is this?

Educate yourself. They don't just grab lions out of the wild. They take in injured and orphaned cubs which wouldn't survive in the wild. Zoos in the U.S. also help with wildlife conservation by breeding some animals that can be released. A few endangered species are only still in existence because of zoos. People care about animals when they can see them and learn about them as well.
Majestic, magnificent, honourable animals who have more respect for one another and us than human's will ever be able to realize, have not yet therefore never will. Only a human could disrespect what is natural for these lion's for their own gain. This lion is so beautiful, his eyes, his soul that it brought tears to my own eyes....bless them and God help us all!!
You are wrong! Lions are the king of plains. Tigers are the real king of the jungle because they live in forest. Tigers hunt alone, raise their cubs alone, they can swim and they can hunt under water. Lions live with pride in a flat footed land in Africa with a very few trees. They hunt with groups and they don't like waters.
BlazeBullet If you did deeper research on lion you'd know that there are cold climate rainforest lions in the Ethiopian mountains and mount Kenya where they're known for growing very large extravagant manes that extended past their belly, though they've been moved off parts of mount Kenya due to the protection of the critically endangered bongo antelope they're still found in the Ethiopian mountains. They're also in small areas of Gabon's jungle regions and in a forest area in Kenya called lake Nakuru where lions look darker and sturdier than lions in savannas, same with other forest ranges. In their non savanna ranges they're known for being in either groups of only 2 or 3 lions to even living solitary lives. The reason why you and many others do not know this is because savanna lions have gained more attention and have been shown more in popular culture plus savanna lions nowadays have a much larger population than non savanna lions, but in the past non savanna lions were very common.
Toria Vincolato Regardless of what you think, there are still critically endangered populations of lions in African tropical rainforests and African cold climate rainforests plus in the past they used to be common in various rainforests from west Africa, central Africa and east Africa.
It's never all b&w. Assuming this lion has ample space in which to move around: 1) No fighting to the death with other male lions. 2) No risk of being killed by prey with horns every time it tries to make a kill. 3)Vet care, esp. important in re rotting teeth. 4) No starving to death. I much prefer seeing lions in the wild. But there is a place for both. Zoos help preserve species and species diversity.
jennyB07 Once you mature mentally, you will understand that encounters like the one you saw in the video, is what gets people interested in conservation. Zoo's play a huge roll in the success of animal and land preservation. And those poor Lions (as you said), are doing a great job acting as ambassadors for their species, are well feed, and I'm sure receive great medical care.
wvufb77 wow lol. You really don't have a clue do you...what a sick, arrogant, self-centred species we are, as demonstrated clearly by your comment. We really believe that we run this planet and it's our right to imprison magnificent creatures in tiny cages so that we can try to "conserve" them, when they were doing fine before our interference, stealing their habitats and killing them. The point IS, it would be better if humans had left them alone in the first place, and then we wouldn't NEED to have "encounters" with them and keep them in tiny enclosures (tiny compared to the open savannah), so that WE can decide we want to help them, because we've decimated their wild population to near extinction. They were doing just fine before we came along, living natural lives. They are top of the food chain and were a thriving species. How INSULTING to them to now have to rely on a pathetic, puny species like humans in order for them to avoid total annihilation. Yes they didn't have medical care but they were FREE as nature intended them to be. That is the most important thing. What use is medical care when you are miserable in a tiny cage 24/7..? Humans...smh. Do you think if they had a choice (that we don't give them), they would choose to be kept captive by us simply because they receive good medical care?? I'm not saying that zoos don't have a purpose, what I"m saying IS, it's a tragedy that we need zoos in the first place.
+Powerranger6342 You call that a "habitat"?... Seriously?!... Do you know how big a wild lion's territory can be?... This is a crapy cage!... Instead of going to zoos and contributing to exploit those beautiful, majestic animals, go watch a few wildlife documentary then, come back and say this is appropriate...
I used to feel depressed as I left the zoo when I was a kid. These animals are nature's beasts taken out of their habitat to amuse people. If rather see them in the wild basking in the sun or nothing at all.
In my eyes I would rather see them in a zoo where they're happy and well looked after and alive than in the wild being hunted, killed and dead. Would you? They're absolutely happy in there and don't know of their true home but its better for them to be alive than dead and extinct, eh?
That's the thing, they are not happy. This is like prison for people with thousands of strangers yelling and teasing them behind glass or bars. Of course, if they lived in the wild, laws to protect them and their habitat would have to be upheld.
They don't know the difference between zoo and being in the whild so how can they feel sad about something they have no knowledge of? they wouldn't know what to do if you put then in the wild compared to other lions that grew up in the wild. the zoo lions would get killed very quickly by prides or they would starve cuz they wouldn't know how to hunt properly so zoo animals are better off in the zoo
Ryan Jennings I'm pretty annoyed that you said that. They're called "Wild" animals for a reason. I'm so sick of hearing people imply that wild animals are better off in captivity than in their natural habitats (which in some cases, I can agree with due to endangerment), but living behind glass walls and high risen chain fences where hordes of humans stare, bring their screaming babies, and shout obnoxiously is not natural. If they're born in that setting, of course they're not going to know what it's like to be out in the wild, but being in vast expanses of space where they get exercise, territory and no human interaction is what's best for them. Seeing a lion as a "natural" animal rot in an enclosure for the entirety of their life is not in any means 'worth seeing''.
'State Farm how may I help you ?' " I'm interested in a Life Insurance Policy ?" 'Absolutely, we can do it over the phone. Your occupation ?' "Lion Keeper at the City Zoo".......click, "Hello ? Hello ?"
E Gagnon, I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one who felt the same exact way! Poor animals. I love the big cats, but especially lions. Those faces! And I've seen how affectionate they can be... with the babies and the humans who have loved and respected them from their babyhood or enough to have earned their trust. Our species seems not to even realize the connection we have with all living things.
There's a middle ground between their facing extinction in the wild or being put in zoos. There are sanctuaries that do not keep wild animals in small isolated (from their own) enclosures the way some zoos do.
Those beautiful lions, how could you have the nerves to kill such absolute royalty as these. And then to have them locked up like this is insane. Or to kill them and put their heads up on a wall.
j.d. Hogg Children can view them just fine on RUclips. My daughter and I watch lion vids all the time. But to cage them like that... it's just not right.
Joe Tairei I agree, but there's something about seeing an Elephant up close that just takes ones breath. I flew with my son to Columbus Ohio just to see Hank the elephant. He weighs over seventeen thousand pounds and stands eleven feet at his back. He is one of the biggest elephants in the world. He is an Asian elephant. And he is Awesome!
j.d. Hogg yes, that's why I prefer the "safari" types of zoos where you drive through and the animals are more or less free. Even then, I guess they can't just let the lions roam loose, though. They'd eat up all the other animals in the place.
Once,I had gone to the Toledo zoo with my children and seen this beautiful male lion and his cage. I had to cry, while others around were laughing at this gorgeous and glorious maned lion begging to be set free to a crowd of nearly twenty. people, acting like he was appealing with anyone of them to listen to plead .He was begging,it was so depressing.😥

Hope the love continues and he loves the hospitality of humans.. So that whenever he gets chance to meet his friends or children, he has only to describe good things about us..
Most zoos in the West are linked to conservation organizations and contribute to the betterment of the species they contain. They provide veterinary care, food and usually very large ranges for animals, larger than some are used to in the wild without coming into contact with a rival pack/species, or being too far away from water. Zoos in some parts are the world are disgusting and inhumane, but for the most part, Zoos in the West are doing a good job, providing a good life for many animals, contributing to the eduation of children, and helping to save so many animals from extinction.
My first thought was "Whoa! That is WAY too much noise for those creatures." But that's actually a very clever way to give the lions a quick check up. Still too much noise though. I'd ask the people to not talk during the presentation. Less rumble on the ears, and the speaker wouldn't have to shout over them.
yeah she even asked him to open his mouth so she could check his teeth for any problems. They might be caged but if he had any problem he wouldnt survive in the wild so in some weird way, they are actually keeping him alive and away from both animal and human threats. But i agree, too much noise, should've asked the parents to try to be quiet. I understand tho, kids will be kids.
@Jax Bivens The zoo contract many hunters to kill their mothers and stole their cubs, If they actually care about they safer they would leave them in a Santuary, no in a cage.
@@CelticVictory So that's your only outlook on the problem; either slaughter them all or (what)? Thanks to exponential, ever-increasing human population, their MUST come a time in the future when there's no place left for them EXCEPT in zoos. I guess some amount of rational THOUGHT is required to solve this conundrum.
After the Lion was standing at 1:09 and did it again a couple more times he walked outside while the audience was clapping; he looks back and it's almost as though he went along with the show thinking yeah I know I'm bad ass. The speaker even says after his 1:09 stand up "that's amazing that he is willing to do that in front of you guys" hence I got that feeling he knows he is entertaining a group of humans and just went along with it.
All the money invested in building and maintaining zoos could be used to protect them in their natural environment with great results. But it's not profitable for humans,so nobody gives a shit. Poachers are not the problem, peoples buying animals body parts are the problem, because thinking it has a value, wich is completly artificial and directly related to the human will.... poachers are a joke,it's a relatively small scale problem. endangered animals are because of money making process, not poaching.
You people complaining about the lion being in a zoo are ridiculous. The lion is obviously well taken care of. His coat is clean and healthy. It would be ratty otherwise. He's obviously comfortable and happy. He would be aggressive and would not want to show himself in front of humans if he were unhappy. Ever consider that maybe this lion is in a zoo because he was injured or rescued where he otherwise would not have made it in the wild?

He is not caged, he has a plenty big space as the Oregon zoo is AZA accredited and therefore must follow their guidelines. Along with this, many species of animals (Lions included) actually have longer lifespans in captivity! Look it up.
@@chrism2809
That does not give them any reason to bring those shit heads and their bratty children to admire.
Hoping this encounter will make an impact on some of these people especially children. He's magnificent.

THIS IS DISGUSTING JUST FEED THE ANIMALS, STOP TREATING THEM LIKE THEY DO A CIRCUSES
The behavior where he stands is actually training him so that they can do exams and inspections. They do this so they dont have to sedate him to check for cuts, tumors and the like. This zoo has some problematic things about it, but this training is definitely pretty standard.

If their numbers were many, then that wouldn't be a problem. Another lion would come and take his place, most likely his offspring, if he were successful enough to mate.
However, that's not the case right now.

What a gorgeous male lion!
Utter humiliation for the king of the jungle.
lions aren't native to jungles, so that title of "king of the jungle" is wrong
+The Panther more so tigers are the king of the jungle. and lions king of the Savanna.
Toria Vincolato Regardless of what you think, there are still critically endangered populations of lions in African tropical rainforests and African cold climate rainforests plus in the past they used to be common in various rainforests from west Africa, central Africa and east Africa.

jennyB07 I couldn't agree more...
jennyB07 Once you mature mentally, you will understand that encounters like the one you saw in the video, is what gets people interested in conservation. Zoo's play a huge roll in the success of animal and land preservation. And those poor Lions (as you said), are doing a great job acting as ambassadors for their species, are well feed, and I'm sure receive great medical care.
btw, you look pretty, like a real life brunette barbie
wvufb77 wow lol.
Alasska Luna Yeah, we do run this planet, how about you join reality. And to the rest of your comment it was just stupid.
That is one powerful animal, make sure that cage is very secure.

Better than getting hunted.
+mark smith if only no rich cunts want them as an exotic pet, we wouldnt have zoos. or hunt them for fun in the wild.
+mark smith It's a habitat. Besides, they'll survive longer in captivity than in the wild.
+Powerranger6342 Surviving and thriving are two different things.

There's a middle ground between their facing extinction in the wild or being put in zoos. There are sanctuaries that do not keep wild animals in small isolated (from their own) enclosures the way some zoos do.
most bodern zoos have bigger big cat encloutures than santuries

j.d. Hogg yes, that's why I prefer the "safari" types of zoos where you drive through and the animals are more or less free. Even then, I guess they can't just let the lions roam loose, though. They'd eat up all the other animals in the place.

💯

You people complaining about the lion being in a zoo are ridiculous. The lion is obviously well taken care of. His coat is clean and healthy. It would be ratty otherwise.
