500Hp Mazda 2 Rally Car || VS || 700Hp Subaru WRX STi - Leadfoot Festival 2019

- Two cars connected to Rallying but with very different origins. Here we have Andrew Hawkeswood in the Mazda 2 AP4+, built for the New Zealand National Rally Championship under the special AP4 regulations, although using here a 2.2L Turbocharged engine with over 500Hp and moving around 1100Kg. Against it we have Carl Ruiterman´s Subaru WRX STi, a car that was originall intended to become a RWD Drift Car but after some testing with it´s reworked 700Hp 2.1L stroked EJ20 Boxer unit, ended up becoming a Sprint/HillClimb machine.
Both placed on the overall Top 10 at this year´s edition of the Leadfoot Festival (with the MAzda being marginally faster), but definitely both quite spectacular machines showing how unique the New Zealand Racing scene in their different motorsport fields.

The only problem about mazda 2 is it's front way too heavy compared to it's back
@@Tokopilbiru While that's probably true of the stock version, this is a racing version of the car. So that weight most likely would've been redistributed on the car. Especially seeing this one is converted to AWD. Not to mention the thing is already mentioned to being light in the description. 1100kg is quite light.

That Subaru a) is not on the right tires, b) is understeering constantly, c) has too much horsepower for this kind of technical course. I didn't expect to love a f'n Mazda 2, but this one is an animal! Going absolute Hoonigan on those hairpins.

The Subaru is quite a bit heavier (1400Kg). Should play right into that understeer for sure ;)

@@265justy pretty sure 323 was group A, just before group b was created, but was basically the same period between 1980 to 1985 fyi.
@@trdadam2325 the RX7 FB also competed under Gr.4 rules iirc (if not in gr.4 it was in that era)

its an ap4 car, which is NZ's version of the R5 cars. 500hp, 4wd, 1.8T (now 1.6 and lighter). won the NZRC in 2017. 6spd sequential, built up by Force Motorsport in Aukland. So far the ap4 cars in nz are - fiesta x2, barina x2, mazda2 x2, yaris, audi S1 (A1), i20, Fabia, Mirage x3, Swift. In Aus theres Yaris x3, Mini, and i think thats it??

Australians recommend any aftermarket parts as I'm trying to build it to rally spec but am having trouble finding things here in the states as there not popular 😕
NZ* not aus. and this is mostly fabricated and built in-house in nz to keep costs down, so may be hard to find. But, you could always find a rocketbunny style kit, and slap a big f off style turbo on it?

Yes - Mazda offers AWD on all models in Japan 🇯🇵 And so I guess it’s easy enough to get one from Japan to NZ

You can't, it was made by Mazda NZ based off one of their 1800cc engines specifically for this car

at the end of the video, that STI is on jackstands with all four tires spinning as if it's idling in gear. I take it the car was kept AWD.
Still AWD. The plan was to go RWD, but after testing it with 700Hp and AWD they decided it was too much fun to pass ;)
