I don't know how much he has to weigh in to be allowed to fight at light heavyweight (is there a minimum weight?), but if he wins and doesn't take too much damage, he should be able to defend both belts. He fights at least 2 times a year, anyway, others defend the belt only one time per year and don't get stripped, so I don't see a problem for him to be and stay double champ, as long as he defends the belts in turn, each one one time per year. If he doesn't take the damage he could do it even more often. Oh boy, what a time to be a fan of the sport

@@thecasual1011 and Izzy does it without fightchanging eyepokes (and making fun of his opponent for complaining about the eye pokes) and without any PED. His legacy will be clean, Jones won't. I mean yeah, if he has 10 more clean fights and he wins in a dominant way, that's great, but he's already slowing down. Both the Santos and the Reyes fight have shown us a way slower Jon Jones. Furthermore: Reyes (according to Big John McCarthy who basically invented the rules of MMA fights) even beat him, if it wasn't for the bad judges that screwed up four fights in that night. And you only slow down more, instead of getting faster again. Maybe if he's able to succeed at heavyweight and stays there, that's the right move for him, cause being a bit slower isn't that big of a problem at HW, most of them are significantly slower from round 2 on, so with a better cardio then those guys he might succeed, even without the drugs. But he has to not lose and CLEARLY not lose against 10 tough guys and become heavyweight champ for really talking about legacy. Right now we don't know if he ever fought clean before his last ban, so all we know is he won clean 4 times since then and he arguably lost to Thiago (would've definitely if the tough mofo didn't tear his ACL and keep fighting for several rounds) and he 100% lost to Reyes if the judges actually watched the fight. In anyway, even if you disagree with that, you can't deny the fact that he's way slower since his ban and putting on muscle mass slows you down even more. If Ngannou, who is a naturally trained freak of nature and result of his commitment to training, hits him like Reyes did, he'll go to sleep. We'll see, but to draw a conclusion: I don't think Adesanya takes anything Jon Jones earned, Boney Boy earned nothing, because if you cheated once, it will always be part of your success story and gives it a bitter taste. Izzy takes, what HE HIMSELF earned, that is winning 100 in 105 pro-fights and manages to still improve. That's just amazing display of clean skill and I love to witness that
People get so mislead at what Izzy weighs, he walks around at about 205-210, that’s before training camp starts, so come fight week he’s in the 190’s, hence when he barely cuts weight
An easy way to bulk up as a mobile striker is to just focus on your legs. Improves movement, power in everything, and adds weight lower to resist takedowns.
A bigger size/weight is only a disadvantage when it's too far past your naturally ideal fighting weight. If you are at your naturally ideal fighting weight, and are bigger than your opponent, it is usually an advantage.
This is a stupid question. Jon Jones is spending a year putting on weight and adapting his body to it. Israel is fighting in two months. Extremely different tasks. Jones has plenty of time to add weight and relearn his game based on new body. Israel does not.
@@kesuya that is the stupidest shit I have ever heard in my life. Steroids make it easier to gain muscle. You gain muscle so fast it makes it abundantly more difficult for your body to adapt. Keep saying dumb shit tho.
I can’t help but think of the DBZ Cell Saga where the saiyans were all trying to bulk up in order to beat Cell then Goku showed that bulking up was slow and inefficient and the best way to fight and beat Cell was to transform at your weight class so that you are faster and efficient. This is what Izzy probably refers to when speaking about these things😭😂🙌🏾
Chael saying Izzy makes 185 easily because that's just what he weighs isn't quite right. He's said before that his walk around weight is between 203-206, so obviously he has to cut something to fight at MW. The benefit of this move to LHW will be he won't have to cut weight at all which should be a big advantage. The other thing is by not bulking up to fight at LHW means he'll be able to continue to defend his MW belt if he chooses to and providing the challenges are there. No doubt if the challenges at MW aren't there he'll vacate that belt and turn his attention to the HW division where Jones will be, and unlike Jones, he won't be dramatically changing his physique by pumping weights, because for him, he's said there's no advantage in doing that.
I disagree that a size advantage is actually a disadvantage but I think his point is accurate Izzy doesn’t have to bulk up too win. It’s kind of like reach having reach is always an advantage but it isn’t always enough to win you the fight. Also too the point of champ champs always moving up in weigh I think it’s because fighters who dominate move up fighters who are losing move down.
Agree in some cases, like with Conor vs Eddie, the ten pound jump paled in comparison to a big speed advantage, but middleweight to LHW is a big leap like we just saw with Wideman and Rockhold
It's not that simple, going from MW to LHW is a complete different animal than going from LHW to HW. The size differences can be huge because 205 to 265 is a much wider range. Then you have to look at the fighter's strengths. For strikers like Izzy and Stipe the extra weight may give a bit more power but it isn't worth the loss of speed and endurance. For Jones, his bread and butter is ground and pound. The extra size only helps Jon take the fight to where he is most effective.
Great information as always by uncle Chael. Only bribe I can pick at this is I believe I heard Izzy say that he’s weighing around 200 lbs nowadays in an interview leading up to the costa fight. I think he’s been lifting some more weights and adding that 10 pounds of good muscle just to make up for size difference between him and Jones, Jan etc. He talked about playing ping pong to help cut weight before costa, and I think he’s added the perfect amount of muscle to remain 185 champ while whooping anyone anytime any weight.
Muscle mass is not unitary. It's somewhat complex with different kinds of muscle fibers and so on. When a fighter decides to lose muscle mass the implicit question asked may be "how can I lose muscle mass to be best able to fight ". Meanwhile question answered by the body is "how can muscle mass best be removed to survive this starvation event". These are two different questions and perhaps with two different answers. What if the body would decide to favor the removal of one type of muscle fibers or otherwise change the composition of muscle mass to best survive starvation? Could that not cause additional difficulties for a fighter trying to adapt to a lower weight? I don't know how this works but with luck science has already solved this issue. That would be nice at least.
It will work for some people but not work for everybody. Some people may retain their skills/speed and conditioning and others just won't. So it will never be clear-cut whether it's a correct decision or not for a particular athlete to bulk up weight when there is allowance.
Is there a video coming on the next Dominick Reyes fight? I mean, everyone was so hyped about how he "beat" Jon Jones and now that he is almost fighting for his contract, no one gives a fuck. I would like to know uncle Chael's opinion on Prochazka vs Reyes
In my limited experience with fighting, I've had the most problems with people equal to me in weight. If your bigger than me, I use my superior speed and stamina. Smaller, then I can use my strength. But equal, then its all about whose got the better technique and that's where I'm lacking.
Another problem with adding muscle is it CAN make you a little slower. Not that it will for sure, but it absolutely can. Adesanya is a guy who relies on his quickness and may not want to take that chance of adding some strength and it slowing him down enough that people catch him.
There are also some parallels in the champ-champ discussion with Cody Garbrandt's decision to move down to flyweight. He said he wants to "run both divisions" (flyweight and bantam), but he's dropping down to flyweight and is already a top contender and former champion at bantam
I've been saying this for sooooo long. Been wrestling my whole life and ever since I could remember I was able to dominate competition that was much larger and stronger than me. Rarely cut weight because once you get used to competing against stronger opponents you begin to cut out the techniques or strategies that rely on strength and refine it to the pure techniques that just simply work. Transitioning into bjj and mma I find this to be the same case. At the top level you never know though. I'd love to see how that fight plays out

One of my high school wrestling coaches once told me once I got to college wrestling would be a lot easier cause I would stop growing and I always thought he meant it for cutting weight but now it makes a little more sense on why he said that and he was so right
I came into bjj as a 265 lb (15% bf) powerlifter with a near 1700lb total. I now lift maybe 2x a week and am down to 215. My wrestling and jits have improved tremendously. Yes, part of that is just time on the mat but losing all that muscle actually helped a great bit.
There absolutely is a size advantage. Broken down its height reach and weight advantage. The most important of those being reach followed by weight. Reach is obvious. You have a longer weapon. You can hit a guy in a position where he cant hit you. Weight can be a big advantage if you train with it and know how to use it. Theres also a seperate issue of weight composition and distribution ie where on your body is it located. These things make a big difference in striking power along with other factors such as muscle fiber type and of course technique. But the most important thing to remember is that advantages can be overcome. Determination and mental toughness not to mention pain tolerance and a solid chin can make up for a lot of deficiencies in power technique and physique. The Diaz bros come to mind..
Chael in theory if issy doesn’t bulk up and stays around 183lbs and wins the 205 belt, could he be the first triple champ by actually cutting weight and fight usman and do something that’s never even been talked about? I’d love to see that personally!
I doubt coordination would become an issue. He’s bone structure isn’t gonna change like he would during puberty. BUT extra weight might mean less cardio (Chael has said in the past ) which can ruins a gas tank.
Cptain needed: So let say someone who is in middle weight could go to even heavy weight, and not gaining weight? Or some kind of minimal limit has to be done to go up the division?
The advantage is height. Until proportions go out of balance the taller guy have advantage. There is very good argument for changing the weight classes to height classes. Less than 20% of the fighters will be in different class if the change was done.Sort out the cutting issue as well.
Izzy can definitely defend both. The dude lives and breathes in the gym you can tell it's his life. I also like that Izzy doesn't look past Jan at all and gives Jan the props he deserves.
Gaining a lot of muscle over a short period of time does not benefit a fighter as much as we would think it would. This is a phenomenon well recorded since the ‘90s. For example, you can check out the works of an author by the name of Akira Toriyama.
Jones has 23% takedown success rate in his last 5 fights compared to 80% in his first 5 title fights.. So let's not act like Jon takes down guys whenever he wants these days lmao
He walks around at 205-207. He said that in the talks if he was to move up to heavyweight, not light heavyweight but this also contradicts his statement about making weight after his fight with Paulo costa
Good call, an extra 5 pounds of muscle won't help him against Jan but it could hurt him at 185. I'd also be willing to bet that he'll be around 200-205 without any cutting so dieting, so this should be a fight where the weight won't affect too much, if Jan had wrestling skills like Khabib obviously that would be different, but I think this will be a good old fashioned striking match.
Didn't Dana say he didn't have to vacate the middleweight belt,, if I'm not mistaken he did ,, right after the Anderson's fight,, I could be wrong,, but I think Adesanya holds the 185 to,,
Chael, how often do champions usually fight each year, maybe twice? Izzy has openly said he wants to fight 4 times a year. So, he could actively defend both belts without holding either division up.
I dont think he should bulk up either. For one it will throw his speed off, and two, when you look at Jan, he's not really trying to wrestle or grapple, and even if he were I think he'd struggle to get a hold of Izzy anyways. So there's really no advantage to bulking up, because Izzy is all about quickness and percision, his speed and accurracy negates the need for extreme power. I don't think he should do anything to mess with his formula. For Jon and how Jon fights, bulking up makes sense though.
@@thecasual1011 and i think he uses wrestling and clinch-fighting far more, both of which require a lot of strength to do effectively. If Jon gets muscled in the clinch or in wresting/grappling exchanges, that's a huge element of his game that he can't rely on.
People saying that Izzy is too small for Jones/Błachowicz at 205, bare in mind he had several pro kickboxing fights at heavyweight when he was arguably smaller than he is now
Its not that simple, in my humble opinion. There is a downside to not gaining the additional size and strength in some cases. I think it depends on the individual's natural build and fighting style, as well as their opponent's size/strength and fighting style. Example, a smaller/weaker, but quicker wrestler vs. a larger/stronger wrestler is a bad match-up for the smaller wrestler. However, a smaller, but quicker striker might fair-off better against a bigger but slower striker. Finally, if size and strength didn't matter than they wouldn't have weight classes to begin with. Weight classes are designed to protect smaller fighters.
Ive never understood people who wouldn’t fight at the weight they move the best Your the best in the gym at your natural weight as your preparing to fight The biggest issue is wrestling and strength but Adesanya uses movement to neutralisering both those issue Jon is slower so he might be worried that Ngannou is going to take him down 👀

Crazy to think there was a time Jones was possibly never going to make it back his spot in UFC with all the allegations against him but here we are. With an undefeated Israel Adesanya to potentially take everything Jones has earnt. The stars have aligned.
Yeah no point in stripping Izzy.. It's crazy how he is no. 3 p4p fighter and also one of the most active fighter.. He'll find a way to defend both belts.
And Romero is practically a LHW himself lol
Look up what "israel" means and tell me this is not destiny for the stylebender

Izzy is an actual game changer in many aspects, he was such a must for the growth of MMA at this time.
Chael is just spot on for this job, Period!
People get so mislead at what Izzy weighs, he walks around at about 205-210, that’s before training camp starts, so come fight week he’s in the 190’s, hence when he barely cuts weight
Honestly love this channel.
Jeez you get so many views lately, didn't expect that with so many videos, I'm happy for you man :)
chael the only commentator i know that could turn a hot take into philosophy. thumbs up.
This is a stupid question. Jon Jones is spending a year putting on weight and adapting his body to it. Israel is fighting in two months. Extremely different tasks. Jones has plenty of time to add weight and relearn his game based on new body. Israel does not.
Izzy been moving up and down in weight well before the ufc it aint new to him
Plus Jones takes steroids and who knows what else. The weight gain will not affect him
@@joshuahack3231 that has absolutely nothing to do with the video. So if you didn’t watch the video why the fuck did you argue with me?
@@kesuya that is the stupidest shit I have ever heard in my life. Steroids make it easier to gain muscle. You gain muscle so fast it makes it abundantly more difficult for your body to adapt. Keep saying dumb shit tho.
Uncle Chael thank u for the content
When Henry Cejudo comes out of retirement he's coming after Francis Ngannou, he's going to have such an advantage.
Lol you should send this analogy to izzy
@@fear_the_lord1595 I'd be willing to bet my life on the fact that this exact scenario is a part of Israel's thought process. 1 million percent.
@@DavyBrando lol. It was his decision process
Awesome reference! lol
Kinetic energy is calculated by 1/2mv^2, therefore if you are faster you will generate more kinetic energy compared to if you have more mass.
Thank you for some normalcy on a tense day
Agree in some cases, like with Conor vs Eddie, the ten pound jump paled in comparison to a big speed advantage, but middleweight to LHW is a big leap like we just saw with Wideman and Rockhold
Great take uncle Chael.
No need to bulk when you basically don’t have to cut weight. He’s going to be faster than Jan. But Jan’s boxing is no joke. I see Izzy winning though.
GSP made that mistake when he moved up to 185 and got colitis as a result, even though he still won the belt.

@@plasma9839 yes son, what is it?

He doesn't have to bulk up to fight. He's good the way he is. Double Champion in the making.
I trust everything this guy says he is undefeated.
People who drop down keep their power people who move up keep their speed
I'd love to see how that fight plays out
Uncle Chael looking out for us regular civilians during election time. I hope he has a great breckfrast before some mooey-tie. The hero of this generation.
Best for Izzy to keep normal weight, if he can pull this off, will leave the option open to return to 185, big money fights against jan and jones at 205, then hopefully chimiev is real deal and will be 170 champion and moves up to fight Izzy

Uncle Chael giving me a break from this election.
Chael: "Lots of things logically make sense, but it doesn't necessarily make them right"
Chael: *proceeds to logically explain Adesanya's position*
Well said!! Couldn’t agree more
Size seldom makes a real difference in a fight. It's how comfortable you are at your peak performance werght.
Izzie is a striker. He's proven that he can drop guys a big and muscely as Costa, he doesn't need to be bigger, slower, and more tired to win.

Staying at a comfortable weight will be massively beneficial to izzy.
What a great point
Gaining a lot of muscle over a short period of time does not benefit a fighter as much as we would think it would. This is a phenomenon well recorded since the ‘90s. For example, you can check out the works of an author by the name of Akira Toriyama.
I'm sorry. Izzy needs at least 10 to 15 pounds of muscle to be competitive with Jones in grappling and wrestling
Jones has 23% takedown success rate in his last 5 fights compared to 80% in his first 5 title fights.. So let's not act like Jon takes down guys whenever he wants these days lmao
Muscles make you slow and you'll a higher vo2 👊
Izzy can't carry an extra 15 pounds. It would be more of a hindrance on him.
He walks around at 205-207. He said that in the talks if he was to move up to heavyweight, not light heavyweight but this also contradicts his statement about making weight after his fight with Paulo costa
I AM ONCE AGAIN ASKING FOR MORE VIDEOS
Good call, an extra 5 pounds of muscle won't help him against Jan but it could hurt him at 185. I'd also be willing to bet that he'll be around 200-205 without any cutting so dieting, so this should be a fight where the weight won't affect too much, if Jan had wrestling skills like Khabib obviously that would be different, but I think this will be a good old fashioned striking match.
Jan has great submission skills tho.

Because the only person who can interrupt Chael and not face the wrath of the THE LARGEST ARMS in West Linn, is Chael himself.
I think we all remember the DBZ episode where Trunks got all pumped up and couldn't catch Cell. Smart move on Izzies part.
Force = mass x acceleration2...
Punching power depends on speed and mass, extra nuscle isn't a bad thing, unless you're sacrificing speed.
Chael, how often do champions usually fight each year, maybe twice? Izzy has openly said he wants to fight 4 times a year. So, he could actively defend both belts without holding either division up.
Hotel Chael 💪💪
I dont think he should bulk up either. For one it will throw his speed off, and two, when you look at Jan, he's not really trying to wrestle or grapple, and even if he were I think he'd struggle to get a hold of Izzy anyways.
So there's really no advantage to bulking up, because Izzy is all about quickness and percision, his speed and accurracy negates the need for extreme power. I don't think he should do anything to mess with his formula.
For Jon and how Jon fights, bulking up makes sense though.
Yea I think Jones would benefit from the extra muscle. He's got a huge frame and lots of room to put on size
@@thecasual1011 and i think he uses wrestling and clinch-fighting far more, both of which require a lot of strength to do effectively. If Jon gets muscled in the clinch or in wresting/grappling exchanges, that's a huge element of his game that he can't rely on.
@@quiettimegaming3642 he's definitely put on some size recently on his Instagram he's lifting heavy weights
I'm not saying your wrong about everything but adensanya doesn't walk around at 185. He said he walks around at 205 walking around lean at 205.
Dana already said he won't strip Izzy of either belts(should he win) because of how active he is he doesn't see Adesanya holding up the weight classes
Remember when you grew 3 inches over the summer? -Chael 2020
Ive never understood people who wouldn’t fight at the weight they move the best

Izzy has fought at heavier weight classes before. Being from NZ, I have seen him win the LHW and HW king of the rings and a boxing LHW super 8 title. The man, keeps his speed, but is technically sound to check heavy kickers / rolling + speed for punchers.
