With a few decades managing a mountain motorsports shop i have concluded that there are basically 3 types of used sleds on the market.
The Stripper Sled- always fast! looks hot AF, sounds OK but usually loud, not stock and most likely has a few bolt-on accessories and trinkets, check compression first! over all good sled to pound on for a season or two, just don't ask about it's past! usually asking a bit much but may be worth it!
The Ex Wife sled- it has a lot invested into it that the seller will not recoup, and lots of expensive aftermarket accessories that may or may not increase performance but still looks nice. after a handfull of years and many long miles it still runs and looks OK but it wasn't the rite one for the seller but they're sure it'll be prefect for someone else. usually affordable, at first..
The Hooker sled- old rental. it'll run and usually get ya where yer going, if you can get it to start, use ether! it has no compression, clapped suspension, odometer was disconnected years ago, no telling how many miles its actually got so don't ask...always cheap, or should be.
Good luck out there, hope this helps.

Don't forget a pressure tester. One important thing to check is cylinder compression when buying a used sled best way to tell the condition of a engine if you have 135psi in one cylinder and 115psi in another then you know it is going to need engine work

I like to get a rough idea how hard a sled has been ridden. You can text the seller and ask for the miles and hours showing. just divide the two out and compare the result to that for your own sled and it gives you an idea how fast it has been ridden. Sure there is a significant variation depending on the type of trails that have been ridden, but on a given day you almost always get a good variety, and if the rider is keeping it under fifty on the open stuff, compared to the rider who runs it right up to 90 on the open stretches it is going to show up in the average speed.

Hey Matt, I have a 99 Arctic cat ZL 600 EFI… I just recently got the primary clutch rebuilt and put it on yesterday. I took it around the yard and I could here squealing. Before I took it around the yard I had to put shims in the secondary clutch to loosen the belt deflection but I think I might have too many shims. Just wanted to see if you thought that squealing noise was the belt slipping on the secondary clutch???

I sold the sled and I am in search of another sled. I don't want something with quite so much power. My balance is no great for keeping me in the seat at speed. my legs just do not have a lot of strength. I need something comfortable and very reliable. I have a question about my 2011 rmk 800. When I first bought the sled I use the be able to let the sled warm up for a minute or two before I would ride it. But know it can’t run for 15 seconds idling and it will foul a plug just the clutch side. I didn’t really do anything about the problem I would just start the sled up and run it slowly around the yard till it was warmed up then it would not foul a plug. Now the engine light is on and it sputters at high rpm like when you are wheeling. Could it be a fuel issue or a spark issue or clutching? I hope you understand this message and can get back to me thanks! Also compression is at 120 on both sides

That is definitely inaccurate. Yamaha has come a long way as well as arctic cat. The apex is the most reliable sled that has ever been produced. But these new genesis engines are extremely reliable routinely making it 15k miles at the minimum without a rebuild. And they do this making big power 200+ hp. Ski doos have never been able to figure out their electrical leaving it a bonfire on the trail. Seen it more then a few times.

      There's no answer
Roll the dice and pick one. Everything is pretty reliable today. Anyone who says otherwise, is just a fan boy of their brand

Syxxes Performance I started riding two years ago. I’ve now owned and rode everything besides a Yamaha. I enjoyed every one.

I mean I would not trust what he says just needs a flashlight and bring a compression tester and if they don't let you do a compression test then there's something up.

You're talking as someone who know's sleds and is familiar with them. This is a video for someone who is not familiar with machines.

@@syxxes Yeah but you can't tell the compression with a flashlight now can you of course you can tell compression by starting it but like you don't know if it's up to spec what if it needs to be 150PSI and you have 110 then you have a problem.

These newer sleds have too narrow of ski stance. Making them tippy. Always and mean always do a compression test if you are in the market for a used sled.
