The banjo is a stringed instrument with a thin membrane stretched over a frame or cavity to form a resonator. The membrane is typically circular, and usually made of plastic, or occasionally animal skin. Early forms of the instrument were fashioned by Black Americans in the United States. The banjo is frequently associated with folk and country music, and has also been used in some rock, pop and Hip-Hop, also created by the Black American community. Several rock bands, such as the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers, have used the five-string banjo in some of their songs. Historically, the banjo occupied a central place in Black American traditional music and the folk culture of rural whites before entering the mainstream via the minstrel shows of the 19th century. Along with the fiddle, the banjo is a mainstay of American styles of music, such as Bluegrass and old-time music. It is also very frequently used in traditional ("trad") jazz. Banjo is also a common instrument for Caribbean genres like Biguine , Calypso and Mento.

Hiya, thanks so much for that video👍🏼
I'm in the earlier learning process, and still have my entry level banjo.
I've also considered changing the bridge height, as I thought it may help me...but honestly I think that I have to really get my skill level much better before i consider this aspect of it. Really helpful vid, thanks a lot, cheers Steve👍🏼😊.

I honestly think the 5/8” bridge is the way to go. It’s hard to set up a banjo properly with the 1/2” and I feel like the 11/16” is too tall.

Hi, I am just getting into banjo.i bought a cheap chinese job and the user manual is about as usefull as an ashtray on a motorcycle!. The tailpiece makes the strings to have a less break angle on the thin strings and greater angle on the 4th/5th . So now seeing your video, I guess the tailpiece is bent. Thx for some great vids.

Great vids 1 question tho i have 2 banjos an openback and a flathead both have 5/8 bridges but different angles/ heel cut, action is really low on the flathead i want a higher bridge on that one ,will it mess up the intonation?

Great question! If you just want to raise the action of the strings I would adjust that with the coordinating rod. The only reason I could see changing the height of the bridge is if you want to affect the string break angle across the bridge. A taller bridge to increase string break angle and vice versa with a shorter bridge. None of those should affect being able to adjust your intonation .
