No joke this goes down in history as one of the coolest mostly-practical effects in a movie ever. This floors me. So incredible to see this amount of effort and it really, really shows in the final product.
These puppeteers gave arms that have no faces emotions, and made me believe in those emotions based on what Doc Ock was feeling as well even when they seemingly disagreed with him. No words, no eyebrows, just sound effects and technology.
They had quasi mouths, like when he said "He's right" about Peter saying he should destroy the reactor, one of the arms is open in such a way that it looks like it's open mouth scowling at him

As a kid it broke my heart that Doc Ock died at the end of this movie, and the ending of this BTS segment gave me hope that somehow, he'd turn out okay. Twenty years later the man is coming back like nothing ever happened.
To this day I can't get over how amazing the claw design on the tentacles is. What's so cool about them is they have multiple joints so they can make little claws if they are partially closed.
I have a one problem for Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and that problem was why did Stan Lee and Steve Ditko not create female super heroine version of spiderman and that female superheroine version of spiderwoman's character alter ego name was peteri parker and made peteri parker was wife of peter parker/spiderman and first and last true love interest of peter parker/spiderman in Marvel Comics
Disappointing to realize that if we ever see Doc Ock in live-action again, those arms are going to be completely digital. This was the last of its kind. Even Spidey 3 was consumed by digital effects.
Venom can definitely be done with a MIX of digital and practical effects, but it seems like filmmakers just default to digital. Imagine it working like the way the Xenomorph was done in the original Alien and Aliens. Sandman is definitely a digital character though haha

Movie projects are very interesting to look at. When you see the final product on screen it's like this movie looks like it came from another universe, but when you actually see the development process it's easy to start identifying the practical areas where the developers are simply using their hands to move stuff around.
Without an exaggeration, this is one of the best (if not the best) movie costume I’ve ever seen. I have been hooked to it as soon as I saw a poster featuring it. That evil, crimson socket, that heavy, biomechanical, well, mechanics!

Seeing doc ock playing the piano with the tentacles in Spiderman 2 would have been cool. Perhaps a longer dialogue between him and Harry, and he sits down and plays, or stands lol.

Sam Raimi was confirmed to be brought into the production as an advisor for the characters he previously handled, which is a good sign, we just don’t know to what extent his influence went in.
It's so curious how at the end Stan Lee And Joe Quesada talk about them not wanting to kill a good supervillain to being able to use it again or finding out they weren't really gone only to discover them appear in a future story some time later... And it's just AMAZING how this words get SO MUCH resonance now that after 17 years we are seing this amazing villain as Doc Ock is being part of the new spiderman movie. So freaking excited!! 🔥 🔥 🔥
Sadly this is one of the last few movies we’ll get with that much effort put into using practical effects and puppeteers. Every once in a while we get a film like that but not as much effort used here. Pretty much knew they were gonna use full cgi for the arms in “No Way Home”
Interestingly enough, I worked with Aaron Sculley when I was in college shooting a promo video for the theatre department. He told me about how he was surrounded by Raimi, the costume designer, the production designer, and the conceptual artists while wearing those big black tubes. He also liked to say that he was the original Doc Ock. 😄
RIP Stan Lee, our childhoods would not have been the same without him, every last person here has spent countless hours as a kid dressed like Spider-man trying to shoot spiderwebs.
that’s exactly what i think about too! there’s so many things we don’t know about, as far as technological advances go. if i were a scientist watching this particular video, i’d be brainstorming how to actually make something like that become reality. this movie came out in 2004… 17 years later and i truly believe this is well within human capabilities now
@@kirkreviews7774 I know for SURE the design of them is _slightly_ altered from what I can tell in the No Way Home trailer. The junction between the actual “claw” and the arm section itself looks... different. I revisited Spider-Man 2 to confirm this. It was only the first trailer so for all we know they could still be touching up the design, and it’s not to say they were never cgi with Raimi in SOME scenes, eg when they’re all tussling and writhing around like snakes during the hospital scene as that kind of movement fluidity just couldn’t be achieved with puppetry. But yeah, I have a gut feeling with all the stuff they are trying to do with No Way Home, they just simply haven’t had the time to go the painstaking route and use practical like they were the first time round. It was an arduous process to achieve what they did with Spider-Man 2 with up to 16 puppeteers controlling them all, so it was a pretty tall order. Only time will tell.

I like that unlike many archenemies Doc Ock isn’t really obsessed with Spider-Man. Unlike joker, green goblin, or Loki, Doc Ock wants Spider-Man out of the way and to sort of get on with his life.
If you noticed in the Spiderman - No Way Home trailer, Doc Ock emerges from the Hudson River, where we saw him descending into at the end of Spiderman 2. Nice touch!

They actually were going to use a animatronic venom prop, but I guess they ended up scraping that idea. There is a picture online that you can find.
This should be a reminder to most of the comicbookmovies that no matter how much CGI they use, sometimes is shit compared to practical effects.

I like that unlike many archenemies Doc Ock isn’t really obsessed with Spider-Man. Unlike joker, green goblin, or Loki, Doc Ock wants Spider-Man out of the way and to sort of get on with his life.
If you noticed in the Spiderman - No Way Home trailer, Doc Ock emerges from the Hudson River, where we saw him descending into at the end of Spiderman 2. Nice touch!
