    Thank you for the video Jeff, you really outdid yourself with this video. You really reached deep into everyone's heart as we all share very similar stories. The madeirenses are really adventurous dont you think? Leaving everything behind that they hold close to the heart but one thing I noticed from my parents as well as my family here is that no one ever forgets Madeira.
    I too am a Gouveia, my grandparents from my fathers side were from Curral das Freiras. My mom's side are the Miranda's from Machico.
    Once again, thank you for the awesome content and I am truly enjoying them and I agree with someone post that i read earlier saying that they could've kept on watching for longer as this topic really absorbed us into the history of every Madeiran family that ever left and went to search for a better life outside of Europe.

    Hi. Very nice thank you. i currently live in Sunward Park. My parents were from Prazeres and my grandfather was already in South Africa in 1912. My dad came in 1935. My mom in 1944. My dads first job was in Pretoria in front of an oxwagon. Then farming. i had uncles in the mine and railway. Life was tough back then for them and our difficulty here now is crime. But we rest in it that God will protect and guide our steps and we hold onto ACTS 17:26

    I can truly relate to this video, I moved to the UK at a young age and I feel the same as you I always wanted to experience what it was like to be a Madeiran in Madeira, When I go back I always think deeply about what it must have been like for my parents, Grand parents and its is crazy how hard their lives were in those days. Its weird when I first returned back to Madeira in 2008 ( I was 18) I went to a bar called "Angola" in Santo Antonio of which was very near where I lived, and there was a man just staring at me constantly, after around 15 minutes or so he came up to me and said, You don't remember me but I know by your face that you are Aurelio's son. bearing in mind I had not lived there for 13 years or so, I said yes I am who are you and he just said I was your dads best friend, I left as a boy came back as a young man and the guy still recognised me and my dad unfortunately had not kept in touch as we left Madeira quite quickly. Thanks for sharing once again.

    Hi Jeff. This video is so similar to my parents journey to SA in the 60s . My dad was from Canhas and he left for the Cape on the union castle ship in the late 50s to work on a farm in Princess in the west Rand. In 61 he went back to Madeira to marry my mom from Ponta do Pargo and then returned to Roodepoort . I am aware that we have distant cousins called Gouveia from PdP in the salao who originally were operating from Krugerdorp. If I remember they were in transportation. It’s fascinating to learn all of this and I look forward to seeing more vlogs .

    What a great story of your ancestry. Cant wait to hear also about the protestants who were exiled to TnT and Jacksonville 4:08 if I understood correctly at beginning of the video, bc I am from Trinidad and living in Jacksonville. I must look into Madieran community if they are here in Jacksonville too.

So interesting! I've always wondered where my family comes from. Unfortunately, didn't ask enough questions to my grandma whilst she was alive. I know, she was born in "Arco de Sao Jorge" then moved to Funchal but I'd love to know how did my ancestors ended up in Madeira. Especially because I look Asian and no one ever knew why do I look asian, so maybe is somewhere in the ancestors tree. I read somewhere that a lot of people that colonized Madeira in the beginning were either slaves, prisoners or nobles. Is there any way to find this out?

    • @Hittheroadmadeira
      @Hittheroadmadeira  2 года назад +1

      Hey Carla! Yeah there’s a lot of us all over the world :)) funny enough we’re in Arco do São Jorge at the moment so stick around, in 2 vídeos time you’ll see the place :)) also, the lady in the video, Tânia, does research on family trees, maybe you should send her an email and see if you can track down some information on your grandparents? Might be worth a look!

      First thing you need to do to get a job in Madeira is get to Madeira 🤣 it’s very hard to find work here, always has been. Have a resume ready (European standards) digital and print copy and then when you’re here you need to go “door to door” looking for work. Good luck !!
