  • This is the story of Manny who, at a young age, embarked on a journey that took him far from his homeland. Born and raised in Madeira, he experienced early on the challenges and opportunities that come with immigration. At the age of 12, he left Madeira and moved to South Africa, where he began to build a new life.
Throughout his life, the importance of hard work and education was key. In South Africa, he worked long hours-up to 14 hours a day-and still found the time to pursue his studies.
Despite the setbacks he faced in his business ventures upon returning to Madeira in 1991, he never gave up on self-improvement. He spent ten years attending various training courses, which enabled him to pivot to a career in tourism, a field where he could utilize his passion for languages and interaction with people.
Beyond his personal achievements, he has been deeply involved in his community. He has been an active member of the ALSAP (Luso-South African Association of Portugal), an organization he helped establish. His contributions to the community include giving talks at local schools, where he shares his experiences and stresses the importance of education.
Today, he takes pride in encouraging young people to pursue their studies and develop their talents, emphasizing that education is the key to reaching their full potential and succeeding in whatever path they choose. His journey from a young immigrant to a respected community member and advocate for education and self-improvement serves as an inspiration to many.

Thank you for this wonderful story and especially thank you Mr. Manny. I don't know Portuguese at all, and I only know a little English, but I felt the emotion and kindness that Mr. Manny conveys, and that is the most valuable thing today.

I just want to show my support to what many already wrote. Very special video, very inspiring. Madeira's history - and present - is full of examples of globalization, emmigration, immigration. Always nice to hear first hand experiences! Keep on the good work!

I was born in Monte in 1969. My parents left for the UK and I followed them in 1974. I grew up in London ! Madeira is beautiful, if you have never been, it should be on your list to visit before you die !

    Hi Jeff.
The Madeirense are hard working people! They left Madeira for a better life, to all parts of the world, that they had on the island. Like our parents.
    Um abraço ! 🇵🇹🇿🇦

Oh my goodness Jeff, that was absolutely unique & special! 😮
Kudos to Mr Manuel who had to really start living by being independent at 12 & such achievements accomplished so he can now share his knowledge & experience with the younger generations of Madeira; you must be so proud to have him as part of your family!
My father left Bangladesh for England in his teens, he's now in his late 80s & I feel he's in a similar boat to Senhor Manny. He even managed to be awarded an MBE from The Queen in 2001 for his charity work both home & abroad, but that's another story & a potential future vlog for me as you've inspired my Jeff!
Have a great June my friend & also thanks to André for his camera work 🤗

While the circumstances surrounding my ancestors leaving Madeira were tragic, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for their bravery and foresight in coming to the United States. They settled in Jacksonville, Illinois. I am blessed to return to Madeira for the third time this October.

Reminds me of the story of my parents who left the Azores to Canada for a better life. The irony is now that i'm leaving Canada for the Azores for a better life. Funny how that works.

Manny, loved your story. Such a strong boy and adventure for a 12 year old. Myself, I left Portugal at 12 years of age but with my parents. They left after the revolution in 1975, and 40 + years later, I returned 6 years ago, and I wish I had returned home sooner! Last year, I visited SA including Capetown, which I absolutely loved, along with Durban. So happy that you never forgot home, Portugal needs people like you. God bless you Manny e um grande abraço.
