When that Windows booted up and launched the desktop screen with the iconic sound, it didn't do just that. What it actually did was that it transported all of us back to our good childhood days.
After you'd hear the sound, you'd probably give your RAM a bit more time to get "used" to the loaded OS (heh, that's what I used to do at least) but immediately after, you knew a new adventure was about to begin... which would only leave you with more good memories.

But crt monitors make every game special in its own. The image depth was never matched sadly again by other monitor technologies. Only the expensive OLED somehow manage to roughly create the same depth but still no match. In crt its like you are actually looking into something. Into the game and not just at a moving portrait. Hard to explain you should try to compare if you get the chance. And its not just babbling its actually the case. Just as the coloring in expensive CRTs is still better than most current LCD

I've got a Compaq Deskpro EN SFF Pentium II 400 MHz system with ATI 3D Rage Pro graphics (XPERT@Work in particular, I think) from 1998, and it runs Half-Life quite well at 640x480. I wish I had a CRT monitor to use with this computer, but at least I've got a beige square LCD monitor.

oh man this game was so ground breaking, I remember how immersed I was the first time riding the intro tram. This was the introduction to first person shooters on a large scale, something only really experienced before in turrok or golden eye for me.
My favorite memory about this game was watching my friend play, who was speed running halflife back in 2000 when we were probably 12-13 years old. It's funny to think people were speed running that far back, now there are whole leagues of people specialized in specific speed run games. He was ahead of his time and is unfortunately not around today, but it is nice to think about him while watching this CRT HL run through

aaahhh... When I was born (in the mid-2005), when DVDs were common and push-button phones were common, this video reminded me of the days when I was little. We have been using Windows 7 since I was 4-5 years old, but at that time my relatives had Win XP computers with such tubes.
I didn't know how to download games back then and we always asked my father's cousin to download it (we even bought such a DVD to download the C&C Generals game). Feelings today were very different from those days. what time has passed...😭

Yep, even gaming in 2005 was much more different than today...but in the 90's I think it was even more magical. Just the sheer quality of the games cannot compare to todays influx of cashgrabbing titles :/
