One of the best games ever....I was very fortunate to play this game in 1998 when I was 14 years old....I can still remember the feeling of enthusiasm I had back then when life was so much simpler.
Half-Life. The best computer game in the universe. I'm not crying, I just got dust in my eyes. I was once again proud of myself for being a child in the 1990s.
I first tried Half-Life at "computer club" (internet cafe minus the internet, just LAN), it was deathmatch on crossfire and it blew my mind. Before it everyone was playing Blood, Doom and sometimes Quake in multiplayer deathmatch there (also Descent and Warcraft 2), the graphics blew me away.
Playing those games over LAN back in the days was really something else. I myself was always excited to play them, as compared to today the majority of games just feel empty and dull...
dang, Gordon Freeman was only 27 when HL1 took place. I am now over 10 years older than Gordon was.. I was like 11 years old when this game came out and I played it. I am now x3 to x4 older than I was.
I was born in the year 2000, but I love classic games like this! I think it's because I used to watch my dad and uncle play DOOM, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D and Codename Tenka. Sometimes my dad would even let me play with him when I was little, so I ended up getting a taste for classic games.
When that Windows booted up and launched the desktop screen with the iconic sound, it didn't do just that. What it actually did was that it transported all of us back to our good childhood days. After you'd hear the sound, you'd probably give your RAM a bit more time to get "used" to the loaded OS (heh, that's what I used to do at least) but immediately after, you knew a new adventure was about to begin... which would only leave you with more good memories.

It was cool. Your friends would come over to watch you play or you watch them and see them be amazed. There was only online forums and „chatrooms“ to share your thoughts and experiences with strangers about it. But crt monitors make every game special in its own. The image depth was never matched sadly again by other monitor technologies. Only the expensive OLED somehow manage to roughly create the same depth but still no match. In crt its like you are actually looking into something. Into the game and not just at a moving portrait. Hard to explain you should try to compare if you get the chance. And its not just babbling its actually the case. Just as the coloring in expensive CRTs is still better than most current LCD
This takes me back, used to play this on an old PC with my brother in ‘the computer room’ when we were real young. Now I never see him, he’s half way round the world with his own family. Remember those innocuous moments with the ppl you love because strangely, those can be what you miss the most.
