    Jack Monroe, who writes the blog A Girl Called Jack, discusses how she became a popular austerity cook and food blogger while living below the poverty line, and demonstrates how to cook one of her signature dishes: the carrot, cumin and kidney bean burger.
    A selection of recipes from A Girl Called Jack are to be published next year in a book of the same name

    I so often see ads on TV and TV chefs advocating feeding a family of 4 for about a fiver and saying this is low budget cooking, or tell us that on a low budget we should still be using organic meat but saying you can get 2 meals out of this chicken so its ok that it cost 2 or even 3 times more than a normal one. If I were to feed my family on a fivers worth of food a night that would cost me £35 just for the evening meals alone, if I bought an organic chicken we would eat meat twice that entire week as it would cost the whole weeks meat budget money, and that's including serving more than one vegetarian main meal. When your budget for 3 meals a day plus detergent, toiletries, loo rolls is not much more than £35 these so called budget meals are completely out of your price range. At last a person who is telling the real story and showing how low the cost of a meal has to really be in order to survive on either benefits or low wages.

    I can't believe she was attacked by the media, this woman has shown bravery and resilience, she is a hero. The Tory papers and the political class of this country should be truly ashamed at what they're doing to people.

      Give them to someone who can feed and clothe them. That's what Americans do. Cant feed them? Child services places them with a family that can provide for them.

    Wise words, i also have "been there" i chose to give up smoking to pay my bills, 3 years on and i still don't smoke.best decision i ever made. Someone recently said that they have a few hours a week without using their electricity, every little helps. To get people to stop wasting food is going to be hard BUT we all have to try. when its clear as day that there are some people starving in Europe its time to wake up and help.

    Could be a bit cheaper if people use the larger packets of ground cumin, or any spice, from Asian type grocery stores/off-licenses/corner shops all over the country for 65p instead of little bottles from supermarkets :o)

    Love her. This is the rags to (hopefully) riches story I want to hear. I predict her boy will grow up to do great things and amplify his mother's heroism.
    Puts Rowling's false narrative, ending with her narcissistically using her privileged platform to spout transphobic radicalisation, to the shame it belongs.

    With this universal credit getting paid monthly you can afford all this stuff the first week but the three weeks after that you are living on beans and chips before when you used to get paid fortnightly you could have thought to do this thing but in reality you can only for the first week

    • @lbuckle364
      @lbuckle364 4 года назад +1

      It's the same amount of money whether it's paid fortnightly or monthly. Don't spend it all in the first week. Spread it out like the government used to do for you.

      She has earned countless hundreds of thousands, mostly from begging for patreon donations, without delivering the content she promised. Other sources of her wealth include fees for television appearances, book sales, massive donations for legal action she hasn't taken yet..... also she has had several well off partners and her family is comfortable for money.
      She might have been poor for a couple of years a very long time ago and has turned it into a profitable grift.
      She has confessed to blowing shed loads of it on expensive furniture and her addictions.
