  • Hyperia opened just this year at Thorpe Park as the UK's tallest and fastest roller coaster! It looks extremely impressive and it's a ride I am itching to ride! However, it suffered a hiccup at the start of its season and in this video, we'll take a look at why that likely occurred and the steps being taken to keep the ride operating reliably.

“For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block section is a section of roller coaster track in which only one train may occupy; at the end of each block zone is a method to stop a train in case the section ahead is occupied, this is the safety system in place to keep roller coaster trains from colliding with each other”

That is most definitely CP throwing zamperla under the bus. TT2 is all on Cedar Point in my opinion. They went with an unproven manufacturer, who used their prototype train, and had to make changes to the original lightning trains, so these trains are even more of a prototype than the original lightnig trains.

I rode this last week while I was in the UK, imagine my delight to see a block zone breakdown as soon as I get back from vacation. Very different from anything I’ve ever been on before. Smooth but packs a punch. Ride crew is crushing it too, great sense of urgency in the station.

Be visible from there… I think. Anyway wokings a good option that’s nice and not London and super close car ride. You could go to Guildford and check out the space marine 40k VR thing too in September. Plenty of reasons to come to uk.

It's so much better than most of us thought. Every element is exceptional and feels unique. It's much more intense than a B&M hyper. The airtime isn't like an RMC either. Instead of repetitively ramming you quickly into the restraint, elements transition slowly from strong floater to long sustained ejector. You can tell a lot of love went into its deign. It feels closer to an Intamin in terms of airtime but more out of control and uniquely profiled like an RMC. I've ridden around 30-50 of the world's top 100 coasters according to most lists and it's my 3rd fav. Hope you get to ride soon :)

I am a ride host for Hyperia and a big fan of your channel so thanks for making this video! Hyperia is an amazing ride but you are right about the brake run being slow. Often we’ll send a train and have to wait a bit of time for the next train to come in and park. On average we’re hitting around 30-35 trains an hour and that’s mainly due to it crawling on the brake run not because we’re slow with dispatching

I've had 5 rides on hyperia, most in middle rows but one in the back. The first drop is truly incredible and i can garuntee there's nothing like it. If i would be to describe hyperia, I'd say the elements last forever and give sustained airtime/hangtime (some floater, some ejector). The outerbank in particular feels like the airtime lasts a lifetime. In terms of operations, i can confirm the ride ops are doing an excellent job pumping out trains (and one of them cheekily let me have the back row and i love them for it). Best thing we have in the uk by a mile.

About the capacity, from the train stopping in the station to being clear to dispatch seems to be 25-35 seconds of loading and restraint checking, and they are getting trains out the station before the next one hits the breaks consistantly. The length of the entire main queue was specified by the park as an hour and a half, however they seem to be much faster in poractice. Overall the ride crews are great!

My favourite part about it was after my 2 hour long queue, I realised that it begins playing its theme right as a train progresses through the final block section. So on the final beat all the lights in the station turn on and all the seats rise at the same time. It’s the coolest thing you’ll ever witness

I got 3 rides in on Hyperia opening day, and its definitely a world class coaster, fitting in somewhere in the lower half of my top 10, battling with Taron, Twisted Colossus & Gotham City Escape. Each element is excellent, with the first drop and the stall standing out as my favorite examples of those elements so far.
Great explanation! I'd been keeping an eye on it because i was due to go again the weekend after it reopened, however it dropped down to one train ops because it stalled & the train had to be removed and reassembled. Didn't fancy the queues that could lead to so I'm going again in a few weeks. Seems like this issue is resolved so hopefully no more stalls and it should be running reliably again.

My second ride was row 5 on the left. I fully recommend the left seat to make the most of that outer bank turn. Incredible feeling! My friend scored 2 back seat rides and he says that’s the sweet spot. So incredibly fast. Once you’ve found your fearless once, you will soar through the air in pure ecstasy from then on. I flew to London from the States on June 15th just to ride this beast. Pull into the parking lot and the train was stuck at the top of the hill. Hours later Thorpe pushed a notification through their app that it wouldn't open the rest of the day and that they were issuing tickets to come back at a later date. Extremely upsetting as this was the only day I could visit the park.

The wait time isn't even that long compared to other rides, and at most I had to wait about 45 mins from different times of the day. Also the first drop is insane, but the stall towards the end is crazy as well, every single time it looks like it's going to roll back! We got in 3 rides that day, and it was well worth it! Yes you will want to get out there and ride this! Most roller coasters that would have this issue deal with it by having a short and shallow drop immediately following the chain ending. This is followed by a short section of track that allows the train to get off of the chain without causing much stress. Look at Indiana Beach's Hoosier Hurricane to see an example of this.
There are other ways of dealing with the stress, but this is the most common for big roller coasters that use a chain lift. Unfortunately for Hyperia, this would require a complete redesign of the first drop.

It was unfortunate that they wouldn’t allow you to wait for a row. My rides were in the middle of the train, but I wanted to experience the drop from the back. I think that riding in the back probably makes it an elite experience! Going over that drop in the back row looks similar to how Top Thrill 2 feels going over its top hat.
The outer bank is wild, too, because your body really wants you to go one way but then you go another.

As for the ride itself, it's very different from other hypers I've ridden - the outer-banked turns are superb for airtime, and the hangtime in the stall inversion is great too. It definitely feels like they cheaped out on Hyperia. The ops are dispatching about once every 90 seconds (50 seconds of station time 40 seconds of faff)- with the brake situation they can't do much better than 800pph.
If it ran three trains, even with the endlessly slow transition through the brakes, they'd be able to hit 1200 as a realistic figure - still maintaining their station dispatch time. I do not know why this ride has only two trains.

Park nowadays never run too tight on block, arguably due to stricter safety standard like loading SOP or even the brake run on this thing. Running 3 train will make the 3rd train stuck on lift hill everytime crew can't dispatch it quickly
The only major theme park that push super tight block zone is either Disney or Universal. And the only latest coaster outside those two park and run super tight is Voltron, another Mack

@@no1segate606 not capacity, but more of how they utilize the block zone.
Like playing NL2/Planco, you can run 8 train on 9 block zone and crank down the dispatch time close to the limit. But any deviation would make the coaster jam and throw error. It's still safe ofc, but who like to stuck on MCBR anyway instead of just going.

I rode it first on opening day once it was amazing, the first drop was probably the best giving airtime all the way till the bottom in the back row, sadly, since it reopened and when I rode it again, the seats closer to the back got a noticeable rattle to it but it’s still an amazing and comfortable though.

Reminds me a few years back on Port Aventuras Shambala.... They had also some issues on the lifthill, loosing these "green plastics" thingies, followed by a 2-day breakdown ... so not a manufacturers thing imho

Whenever you get to visit the UK you should make it a small run of UK parks; here are the top parks to visit first in my mind:
    Thorpe Park
    Alton Towers
    Blackpool Pleasure Beach (for Icon)
Flamingo Land (hugely underrated park and world class zoo, 9 adult creds!)

This issue seems similar to the one that B&M used to work around with their pre drops. I'm surprised Mack didn't use B&M's modern approach of having the chain guide extend further over the crown of the lift hill. Though if DC Rivals doesn't have the problem then maybe they didn't think it was necessary.

Due to the duration of the ride itself, they lengthened the brake section to let the train slowly roll down to give the station staff more time to dispatch the train in the station.
