4 opened up jumps on this program. One less triple than Witt, she deseved a lower techincal score and perhaps an equal artistic score, I had this at 5.6 5.8
Witt was not as artistic as she was by 87 and 88. Her choreography was horrible. Look at her program, a bunch of cheesy put together Mona Lisa tunes, poorly arranged. Sumners, Chin, Kondrashova, and even Zayak had better choroegraphed numbers that made more sense musically and were more cohesive. Her lower body and leg extensions were also very sloppy and unpolished by this point. Roz probably was overmarked but Witt was overmarked too especialy on the artistic score. 4 5.9s was too much since her program was horribly choreographed and she wasnt even close to the artist she would be in later years as an adult, especialy by 86-88. I might have gone with Sumners even with the mistakes and lack of tech. content, especialy since witt popped a jump or two too, even if she still did more technically than Sumners, definitely not perfect this night either.

witt was lucky to win 1988. elizabeth manley won freeskate and witt came in second, but witt won the gold was because manley was third coming into freeskate. back in those days with compulsory figure was part of the competition, only the top 2 finishers going into freeskate can win the gold, unfortunately, manley was third going into freeskate and. therefore she could not win. the gold.
Well Sumners only won silver because of the figures! She had an error in the short and a terrible long program, so she doesn’t deserve the silver! Chin was WAY better than Sumners!
Chin and Zayak never had a shot to beat Witt and Sumners overall due to their figures placings of course but in the long both were undermarked compared to both Witt and Sumners. And it could have even helped Chin climb to the bronze over Ivanova who had a horrible skate had the longs been marked properly with Chin possibly being 1st in the long.
Had she done that last triple toe and last double axle - she would have won - I'm pretty certain that would have been enough. Why oh why did she give up in those last 30 seconds?! I think either the Russian, West German or Canadian judges would have switched had she completed it through. Forget the East German judge and the Yugoslav judge must have been high because he put Roz behind Ivanova!
It is sad that maybe one more triple or one more double axel at the end could've switched one judge over to make the difference. Still, she seemed happy and ecstatic with the 6.0

Basically once she won figures, with garbage free skaters like Voderozva, Carboni, and Ivanova all in the top 5, she was already ensured a medal, it was only a matter of the color.
I would have scored Elaine's wonderful, energetic free skate (four triples: three different ones including a split-3T-2T-2L) as the best of the evening. The judges only had her fourth best - absurd!

comparing 2021 makeup, hair or costumes to the 80s - ...why? To me the very worst hair and costumes were Tonya Harding, Oksana Bauil, Kristi Yamaguchi- all were sporting bushy ponytails with big bushy bangs and garish skating costumes now I LOVE all those skaters but in the following years the trend Nancy Kerrigan started would prevail: elegant simple Vera Wang inspired costumes and less of the big hair! It's fun looking back through the decades, Sonja Heine 28, 32, 36 Olympic Gold medalist actually wore bloomers and hats!

Roz wuz robbed. Katarina Witt slept with all the Eastern European judges the night before the long program as she usually does during a major event. In 1988, Witt put another curse and witch's spell on Debi Thomas to retain her Gold. To get an idea of Katarina's true capabilities as a skater, you'd have to watch her 1994 LP in Lillehammer to see her limited jumping abilities and artistic merit. By then, Witt was too old to sleep her way to the top and could not influence the final voting.
I trained with her in the early 1980's at Sun Valley Idaho. She is a fantastic skater really one of the best. Lovely person too.

I actually enjoy the skating style of Elaine Zayak far better than Rosalynn Sumners!
Sumners has much better posture, hand positions, and fluidity.
