HOW TO DRIFT - A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR LIKE A PRO!

- We've had a ton of people asking about drifting their front wheel drive cars, personally I think it's pretty lame but I had fun shooting this video. I borrowed my friend Seans automatic Mazda 3, and do the basics on how to drift right and left hand corners as well as the big backwards entries here at PARC. Front wheel drive "drifting" in reality isn't actually drifting at all, but since it was such a popular discussion.. here it is.
Finally got the balls to try this,. Lifted the hand brake to drift a rotary, and the back slid out real nice. Then I completely spun out, hit a guard rail, and just destroyed my lancer GTS, but in style 😎

Manual is cheaper most of the time 👀
Agreed my parents “surprised” me with a car, I had no say so In what I’d get
"Front wheel drive = automatic transmission"
You can't be more American than this
Wow. Automatic transmission. So American...
or maybe even Japanese
Pretty damn sure my 05 Civic LX coupe is both manual transmission and FWD
Cobalt SS and Neon SRT-4 are both great FWD Manual cars.
Most hatchbacks are manual and front wheel drive, here in the Uk we dont really drive automatics much
Perfect for rental cars
Lmao i remember that
Been there good times
My friend totaled a rental, but he got insurance so it was not nearly as bad 🙃
Lesson here: ALWAYS use protection.

"Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction in only the rear wheels" I like this definition better. It makes sense
Doesn’t have to be loss of traction only is real wheels you can lose traction in front have them spin and whip around back while foot on gas and release e brake to drift
Ironically fwds like to oversteer, just need maybe 140 hp to be oversteer happy

“Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tires, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. Car drifting is caused when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa, also known as opposite lock or counter-steering).”

@@roootkit7563 you are a pc gamer even if it's candy crush
This is my second time watching this video and I've actually seen people who don't even need the hand brake or the foot brake, because a FWD's advantage in drifting is that depending on how sharp corner is you can just use entry speed and momentum to get the car sideways. So I'm not sure why he says that FWD drifting isn't drifting because the fact of the matter is that it is drifting just faster and in some ways more difficult. And the fact that he just decided to completely disrespect FWD cars and car owners within the first minute of the video makes him look really ridiculous considering that in professional drifting there are people who spend time and effort on their Civics or Preludes and actually drifting just as good as the Silvias or AE86s on the same track. FWD drifting IS drifting so is AWD and excluding FWD from the drifting category because it isn't as common to see or easy to drift isn't right for the people who have spent much more time effort and skill into drifting their FWD cars. So please don't disrespect the kind of cars that many people who drift cherish because they spent time and effort into their FWD cars by making them unique and successful drift cars

Thank you for sharing this, it does indeed give me hope. 😌👍
I know it’s been 2 years but…. Your the angel we need
100% behind this comment
Yeah, where I live manual is standard, so everyone gets it, nothing to do with RWD of FWD
Also, you're right, you most definitely don't need the handbrake or the brake to drift a FWD, me and my k11 Micra can attest to that... It's all about gas, weight distribution momentum and turning the wheel fast
i’ve never seen someone have so much confidence in speaking on something they absolutely have no clue about😂

@@ep2324 imagine saying a formula DRIFT driver doesnt know how to drift 🤣😂 thats what happens when you dont know how much you dont know
clown
@@efrenmendoza3388 he did a few handbrake turns in this video, he does know how to drift with RWD (and is good at it) but as the video shows it doesn't mean he can drift FWD (at least properly). To make it easier you can put grippy tires on the front and slippery ones on the back, also a proper suspension tuning will help (soft front, stiff rear), a front biased weight distribution, and the handbrake is just yanked quickly (to break the traction or prevent the car from straightening out) instead just pulling it and leaving it on, its a lot different to RWD drifting as you use a combination of weight transfer, the handbrake and the steering to drift instead of throttle and steering.
In America: 9 times out of 10 the car is automatic.
In Britain: 9999 times out of 10000 the car is manual.

Fuck automatic seriously they suck

Idk, even in japan they accept that fwd and awd can drift.
Drifting can be done in any car, regardless of drivetrain. However as a sport, its traditionally rwd.

Nyxteros people drift awd everyday it’s been known that u can drift them ever watch rally cars or seen a subi drift?
Throttle control in a front wheel is also important! It along with your steering angle determines where the front of the car is going to go, especially in the snow and ice, if you just stomp on it you’ll spin out and understeer, feel the rpm and traction cause there are a few corners in my area I like to have my rear end pass my front, turn full lock into the slide and give it gas to just before losing traction, then slowly correct the steering and it pulls the car straight without loosing as much speed. for the backwards entry it’s not that he has to go faster he has to lock the steering the other way and he will go backwards. Cool introductory video, only complaints is the car is auto (manual is my preference) and he says front wheel drive sliding isn’t drifting; it is considered power sliding yes but does not matter if you drive rear wheel or front wheel, have some fun and know your car, the reason I prefer manual is because it connects you to the car more. Feel all four corners and the flex of the car after you know your vehicle it will tell you how to play around without hurting it. But either way if you are going to drift my only plea is you don’t go into the top end of your rpms, have a spare set of tires you’ll put on when you’ve burnt these ones out and spare break pads. Stay safe have fun

When approaching corner DON'T turn into corner, TURN OUT. If you start heading off road, you're on the right track, now apply full throttle. Hopefully you'll crash and ride off your FWD car, now you can claim insurance and buy a RWD.

That's how I initially was doing drifts as well, but then I figured out a way you can do drifts without using the ebrake, simply keep any traction control devices off which you should be doing even using the E brake method, enter the turn at a higher rate of speed, start your turn on the wheel and floor it, the car will begin to slide and the rear end will slide out, then you have to feather the gas back and forth to get to grab and slide depending on how far you want it to drift. I do it all the time in a Acura TL. I alway turn off my traction control whenever I drive my car unless it's raining or snowing, but I don't like the car how it handles with it on, in an emergency on dry pavement it can cause an accident. I use to drift rear wheel cars all the time but the Acura was and is my first front wheel drive car, so I had to practice doing it and used a large open parking lot so as not to hit stuff. The Acura by the way is bone stock, no special aftermarket handling shocks, stock Bridgestone tires, doesn't even have an aftermarket breather.
I didn't know about the differential issue a person commented on, hmmm I have to look into that one, I've been doing this for several years with no issues...yet, but if I find out more about this being a potential issue I may have to backoff from doing wheel spins with the car. I've always been hard on cars though.
Acura tl here! With super light weight wheels they’re fast as fluff. I put on aluminum crank pulley and aluminum underdrive alternator pulley and it pulls hard.
check out four wheel drifts, it's a technique you can do in a FWD that's similar to what you were doing but rely on momentum and weight transfer which allow for some nice slideways action without taking a toll on your diff
Came here to learn how to drift my tl after the intro I don’t even want anymore 🥲
I only do this in the wet to prevent tire damage. But I found the explanations confusing saying "pull up the hand brake and lift/drop your left hand" why not just say turn left or right?
Because I want your hand in that part of the wheel.
I want a RWD car so damn badly... but my supercharged Monte Carlo is nothing to laugh at

I drifted my outlander sport with no handbrake on a tight corner going 45 mph. You just have to turn hard into the corner going fast and then only counter-steer after you've mostly made it through your turn. The counter-steer is very subtle, don't overdue it and end up in a ditch.
lol yea just turn realllly haed and do a backflip eith the car insteaad of drifting

BlueNerve no, fwd will understeer
@@vijayaseenivasan7842 it's less likely to untersteer than a rwd to oversteer due to most of it's weight being in the front (actually some fwd's are more likely to oversteer because of that) ... still understeering is probably 10x worse
You can also just gain a little speed from start and yank the steering wheel to the left to go left and to the right to turn right. It’ll throw the rear out and burn some rubber. I circled my buddy’s car doing this and it was fun and smelly as heck. The idea is to get rear balance off.

no no no no no no no. you do not use the handbrake you use the old Scandinavian flick like in rallies. you also make sure that in front wheel drive your front wheels are wider with more grip than the back wheels. you can easily take a front wheel drive car around tight bends faster than a rear wheel drive car. on a rear wheel drive car once the driving wheels start to lose traction in your powerslide they cease to make any reasonable traction and acceleration there for you start to lose speed. using the Swedish flick tactic you can slide out the back wheels by momentum alone while your front wheels continue to accelerate the car us losing no speed on that tight hairpin.
You just shoved everyone saying that a RWD car is better than a FWD car a Jaguar F Type Convertible up their asses (got that one from "James May answers some more of the internet's questions")
Drifting is an art and most people think the feat requires a rear-wheel-drive car with a 1000+ hp engine and a hydraulic handbrake. Wrong. You can do FWD drifting too. It will take lots of practice, patience, and following proper safety rules. Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. Therefore it is still drifting, you cannot just say it isn’t because it’s not your preferred technique.
Looking through the comments it seams like we’re all in agreement lol
