My dash-cam saved me and I was found not at fault. She was ticketed. Guess who got a lawyer and got the company I was working for to give her a new vehicle and a bunch of money. I was recently watching the cannon ball program from the black and white days. We were in a profession that was a proud and respected career. Clean, tidy, uniformed drivers. Proud.
You compare them with present industry conditions and it’s saddening to compare. Crusher caps, uniforms, correct footwear and attire.
    , clean.Again, proud.
Now the caps and uniforms have been replaced with turbans and flip flops, sweatpants and piss bottle chucking assholes unable to or care not to speak English doing things without regard to anyone else but the selfish people they are. 43 years in may for me as a driver. Don’t mean shit when anyone can do what I do ,and usually get paid the same with minimal experience. And language skills. I’m too old to change careers now but I’m looking forward to retirement more and more each day I’m out here. I’m still proud of myself and what I do, getting tired of my career getting black eyes regularly because of bad drivers. Public never sees the good stuff. Just the bad. Like I’ve always said “one swipe of shit wipes out a lot of attaboys. Stay proud all you long timers! We are a species that is slowly going extinct.

This is just the 1st Gen so they're using existing Truck Models instead of incurring the cost of ordering special made Trucks. Also, they still have Truck Drivers in most of these trucks during testing, probably have a Tech with them too, to monitor for software glitches/bugs.
However, I still don't think there's much to worry about for the current generation of Truckers. Elon's has warned about this as well; he stated there'll be a rush to automatize Vehicles to much acclaim until... the first major, tragic accident. Then they'll be a period of demands for major safety regulations before AI Vehicles are aloud back on the road.
However, AI will eventually get to the point of being more precise navigating the physical world than humans, but not till this current Trucking generation is near retired. Just look had poorly AI Cars are doing, in San Fran they can't keep them from blocking traffic cause the lead car stops over a piece of plastic or paper in the road, causing 4 or 5 of them to pull around in different directions blocking all lanes.

How is the truck going to: check in at shippers, find the correct dock then back into it, handle severe weather, make wide turns in tight downtown areas, fuel itself at truck stops, handle closed roads which aren't updated in its GPS. How is it going to handle crazy 4 wheelers cutting it off on the highway? We're going to see these things flipping over on interstates literally weekly if not more frequent.

So many other duties for a driver such as drop and hook, backing into a dock, securing freight especially flatbeds and such also fueling, pre trips, post trips. Autonomous might be a solution for point to point but that is hardly the bulk of trucking freight in US. Most of it is irregular route OTR freight hauling. But sadly any human driver replaced is a loss if you ask me, and I don't think the technology is cheap to maintain either so will there actually be any costs savings?

I'm not a trucker, though I've driven a big truck and pulled a 53 footer a time or two. This guy and the whole automated driving craze is just that, crazy. I prefer the current "dangerous" way things are to the utopian dream of perfected automated driving vehicles. Computer code is only as good as the programmers, and aint none of us perfect and there aint none of us can code every scenario with every variable. I get it that there will be crashes, but I prefer a human to make the tough decisions to any computer. It just aint right.

My trainer told me years ago that with a fully autonomous truck that when faced with no safe option and has to hit either a kid on a bike or a vehicle, the truck will hit the kid on the bike due to less collateral damage to the truck. This will guarantee a loss of life for the kid. Whereas if the truck hit the car, there is a possibility that the occupants will survive (given seatbelts, airbags, etc).
