Lots of people have asked me if it's better to buy a newer high mileage car or an older low mileage version. Today, I've bought this 2013 Toyota Avensis turbo diesel (which has covered a lot of miles), to briefly discuss some points worth considering.

My dad is a mechanic he always taught me to not worry about high mileage cars it all about car maintenance and body conditions
My previous car was a Citroen C4 petrol that I inherited with 5k on the clock. I was doing 1k a week in it for work and when I eventually upgraded it had done 325K with only one major breakdown (alternator belt snapped). I was astonished to be fair. It was always serviced and maintained so I would definitely agree that plays a huge part in it.

Great video and nicely explained. I believe that high mileage car's are a great way to get something quite new for a great price and who knows what mileage has been done by the vehicle from outside.. I had a 2003 VW Bora 1.9 tdi 150 a few years ago and it was immaculate with no signs of wear and tear, i paid £400 for it with 189k showing on the clock. I bought it for a cheap daily driver to keep the mileage down on my Golf VR6. The Bora never skipped a beat, it pulled hard with no smoke, started first time every time through winter and summer and didn't have a spot of rust on it. The only thing that looked a little old was the headlamps that had deteriorated with age. Anyway it passed its mot's each year without any advisories and even the mot inspector commented on how immaculate the car was underneath and then to my shock discovered that the car had actually done 628k miles back in 2013 and had new binnacle fitted in 2014 which hadn't been corrected so the car to my amazement had actually covered over 800k miles and spent the majority of its life as a cab. I sold it back in 2017 on gumtree with a truthful ad asking for £500 ono and within an hour of the ad going live my phone didn't stop ringing and the car sold for £450 within 2 hours.. So yes give me high mileage car's over older low mileage immaculate condition car's any day. Apologies for the essay to anyone reading this but i felt it was relevant and if i can remember the full registration i will add it for people to check.

Love it! My 2001 bora tdi has 225000 and current mot with no advisories. Same clutch for 11 years of ownership. Just bought a accord 09 petrol but that bora stays. It's family
My 1999 Nissan Maxima V6 three litre has done around 260,000km of which I have done 160,000. I have had for 17 years, and have had it serviced every 10,000km. I have replaced the radiator, alternator and starter motor. I asked the garage to check the auto and service it. They said it probably didn’t need doing, but did it anyway. There were no issues with it, but I had peace of mind. I run a log book and it is very poor round town on MPG, but has always done 32MPG or better on a trip including using the aircon in summer. I get 55,000 km out of a set of tyres, and rarely drive it on unsealed roads. I know there will be other things to do in the future, but because I have had it so long, I know what has been done, so am very happy with it. This is my fifth car, and by far the best, a great road vehicle and comfortable. If I had, say, three cars in that period(secondhand) my costs would likely be up to twice what I have spent, with interest on the loans being a killer. I have rarely, if ever, met anyone who has paid cash for either a new or secondhand vehicle, so I am sure I have saved on mine. I was lucky to get a very low interest loan from a Credit Union and saved interest by paying it off one year quicker than what I signed up for.
Those 1.9 TDI engines were just exceptional arguably the best Diesel engines ever made for the combination of performance, fuel economy and reliability I think personally this is where Diesel engines peaked. Modern petrols are far better than modern Diesels now.
Once again Matt tells it like it is, I've done this job nearly 40 years professionaly, and he is one of the very few individuals I've come across who really "know" the product, his reviews are always spot on, be it high mileage, low mileage, or even reviewing the ubiquitous Vauxhall Insignia and managing to eschew all it's failings AND it's strong points without a hint of cynicism, no mean feat ...... just honest to the point reviews, a breath of fresh air AND knowledgeable with it.

Kinda. I agree to an extent. I also think that a lot of taxis being sold by firms, will have no doubt been neglected for the past 30-50k, or need some big work doing, hence why they're flogging them.
(Particularly applicable if they're still allowed to be taxis by the local council - since some have stringent age rules - so if they're selling it way before the age limit...why?)
Not really, I've abused my CR-V over the past 7 years/100k miles, buy the right vehicle to begin with.
It's like Rover owners saying the K series is reliable as long as you don't rev over 2k until it's warm and allow 10 mins after every journey to let the engine cool before you turn it off...

@J M It's both right car & spec & right history & maintenance. Do homework minimise chances of owning a shit car. Lots of shit cars for sale & lots of morons driving. A taxi or police car - no way. Company car - better.
This guy is totally right! I've been driving black cabs with over 700,000 on the clock and the reason why they still work is very simple. Drive them properly, service them on time, if not early and put in original parts. As long as you do that pretty much any car will last.
Your black cab is a hand built vehicle, built to do mileage not your average 12000 miles warranties or twelve months which ever comes first.
@@martingilvray06 trust me, hand built or not, I've seen many of them become sheds because of cutting corners and due to lack of care. For example, I drove a cab for 3 years, and the vehicle was overall fine. When I left, another driver took the vehicle on, and after two weeks the engine had gone! Why? Because the way he drove it. Then went around blaming me for the problem that he caused. So hence why I say, drive them properly, service them on time, if not early and put in the original parts. It really does make a difference to life cycle of the vehicle.
@@Marco-iy7lt A Heavy fuel especially without alley head, well serviced regularly will last forever , my point is the USA get ten times the mileage out of there vehicles than we do . Same manufactures but is it different spec parts , because I would find it hard to believe that you would get 700;000 out of anything but a black cab today in the Uk.
@@martingilvray06 each region requires different qualities for their vehicles. Even in the US, many cars are crap. Look at Chrysler to a Lincoln. Two American brands, but one is total crap, whilst the other brand are well made vehicles.

I own a 07 Yaris. Had it from new so I know how it’s been treated. It’s on 201k and counting. Alternator, starter motor and one rear wheel bearing. Runs perfectly.
Still on the original clutch?
Second clutch. The original 2nd generation Yaris clutch did have an issue. Original exhaust amazingly.
My father bought 2006 Yaris plus(bigger version) with 360k km on clock.1.2 petrol LPG converted.Now it has 400k km(250k mls) and still goes well...
What engine do you have? I've got a Yaris 1.33 2017 with 30k miles on it , I do 24 k a year hoping to keep the car as long as possible.

Some years ago I reluctantly purchased a VW Passat for the wife from a dealer who convinced us that at 175,000 miles there were still lots of miles left in it. We sold it (still running perfectly fine, but by now the bodywork was showing its age) at 325,000 miles. I totally agree with you regarding servicing & driving.
Got to at least change the oil and filters every 5 or 6 thousand miles for multiple hundreds of k miles

@@gravemind6536 oil is cheep, engines are expensive. They also recommend that transmission fluid is for the lifetime of the car but what that means is until their liability runs out lol

"Is it full of rust?", this is crucial . Getting bodywork repairs is very expensive in the garage, whilst suspension parts are not!
As the previous owner of that avensis i can happily say it's been the best car I've evere owned, and still on original clutch when i traded itin in January. I hope my new avensisis as good!

I bought a used avensis a few years newer than yours. It has relatively low mileage.
As I am now 66 it should last until I can't see a number plate from 6ft and can't remember which switch turns the headlights on.

@@stuartgoldie5789 Haha! It's a shame that between the Auto Headlights and Manual Headlights switch positions is another setting - which, at night, is effectively OFF.
Nearly gave me a heart attack when I first drove it home from the dealer's on a dark, wet winter evening through unlit country roads.
Also, little rectangular buttons that all feel the same with almost invisible symbols printed on them to control the heating are annoying.
Other than that, it does exactly what I want a car to do and feels like it will last forever.
Another great video. I drove a V70 D5 private hire car, it spent its life going back and forth to airports, it was sold 3 years ago to a local guy with 250 thousands miles and a full service history for peanuts. I still see it around and it looks great. Keep the videos coming. Thanks. Mark.

As a skint bloke in the early 90,s had to get a very economical car to do my Cambridge to Northampton work journey..what better than a Peugeot non turbo diesel.....never had a heater...stereo...paint was.a sort of matt blue.windy windows..the sort of car the devil would dismiss..but never missed a beat.as got serviced every 10 k .with good oil.there in lies the secret.
Some good points Matt, thanks for posting. I had a Saab 93 1.9 tid. A friend gave it to me for free when it was 6 years old and had 167,000 miles on. I sold it at 246,000 miles . Very comfortable cruiser. Over 5 years I spent a couple of grand keeping maintained. Services, Bushes, springs, discs and pads etc. Really cheap reliable motoring at 3p per mile maintenance cost. I still managed to sell it for £850 as it was a good runner :-)
I bought a Citroen Berlingo van from new and it had a fridge motor. I ran it for 8 years, and when I sold it, it had 721000 miles on the clock. In that time it did have two replacement second hand engines and gearboxes, but it was still a decent runner when I let it go.
My uncle is Australian. He would refer to this car as "just about run in". Us Brits freak at high mileages because there is very little space for us to drive about, but Americans and Aussies I suspect generally view it very differently. A buddy of mine is a trucker in the US. He owns a 1983 Peterbilt classic rig. The mileage is in the millions and it's his daily hauler.
American drivers are very uninformed and believe at 50-60 k it's done,worn out.lf it can't go 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds it's slow and a granny's car,even though they drive like crabs.

I am an Aussie and in Australia you still see people driving on old cars from the 80's!! Used cars in Australia are really expensive as well.
It's worth pointing out that rust is a huge car killer here in the UK, whereas it's not an issue in Oz.
I love Land Cruisers and the Aussies can get 500k out of them easily, whereas the equivalent UK model could have a knackered chassis.
250,000 miles is about 400,000 kilometres so yes if you are talking about kilometres just run in but in miles that is a lot
Lovely Jubbly, you did forget to mention one thing, even if it's been serviced, the thing you sit on, that's a lot of miles for any seat, cloth or leather. That Avensis does looks very clean even for its age.
In the Mercedes owners club magazine they featured a Mercedes 500 SEC, it had done an amazing 1million miles! The owner said that he’d only had to replace the gearbox twice, diff 3 times and the engine once, the current engine had been reconditioned too... It reminded me of the brush I’d owned for 20 years, it had only had 12 new heads and 5 new handles!

I had a Volvo v70 2.4 210k on the clock at the time it was 10 years old and absolutely fine got 2 years out of it was only ment to be a gap car until I found what I wanted but ended up with a great car for 2 yrs and still went to a new home working as it should was such a clean car body wise and history so your 100% correct all about how its treated great vids as normal keep them up really enjoy them
I recently bought an ‘06 Volvo V70 D5 with 266k mi/ 429k km which has been serviced by a certified volvo dealership its entire life. I have already driven 6k miles with it, just giving it regular service and had to replace one xenon module. Really love the videos, keep em coming ;)
I’m a cabbie and my 2014 Auris Tourer is currently on 203,000 and I’ve maintained it with no expense spared so it would make a good buy in the not too distant future. However, the things that rear seat has seen is best not though about! I think it’s seen every bodily fluid possible and so a deep clean is always recommended when purchasing an ex taxi, even if it looks clean!
My old boss had one of those and he drove at least 300 mile everyday between Surrey and Birmingham,it was 17 reg and had more 150k on the clock, really reliable and economic car to run
Just bought a 2011 diesel avensis with 120K miles from the first owner! Well looked after car, inside and out and it was cheaper than the other same age cars with less miles. Drives really nice, it has plenty room and all around a lovely car.
Yes also some very low mileage cars have spend most of there lives doing a lot of short running with little or no time to warm up properly.

@@HighPeakAutos I have a 2006 Touran diesel and when I quit work I was only doing short runs which didn't allow the engine to get warm. I bought a cheap i10 which does all the running about and the Touran does the long journeys.
Got given my grandparents '03 with honda Jazz with only 40k on the clock. Next day, exhaust fell off as it had completely corroded through because of this

Absolutely right about the toll standing around takes on cars. I used to work for an importer of top-end vehicles. Even though the cars weren't very old, most had spent time standing around. The main victims of this were the power steering, air conditioning, bushes, wheel bearings and brake discs.
Own a 2012 BMW F30 320d M Sport/M Performance (ex company car) which I bought at just under 120k miles and it’s hit 171,000 miles this week. Amazing motor, absolutely no mechanical or electrical issues to complain about, I service it every 8k miles and had the rear diff pinion seal replaced last year which is a normal maintenance item. I fall more and more in love with it every day as my daily driver/long distance cruiser, especially when it’s quick enough for day to day runs and has often given me 70mpg+ on long distance journeys! Never be afraid of high mileage especially when they’ve been well looked after!
My next door neighbour has just sold his 2010 volvo v70 D5, It was his taxi which he used for airport runs the mileage when he sold it was 404 thousand miles, Apart from regular servicing and general wear and tear the car was absolutely bullet proof 👍

Really solid cars and the old D5244s will keep going forever, had a 2007 S60 D5 in the other day that was on 250k miles, almost drove like new and still pulled like a train.
Volvo have went down hill in terms of quality / reliability although up in styling...beware!!!!!
I still drive my Uncles 840 Volvo when i am on vacation. Thing has 360000km on the clock and it(clock) stopped working some 5-7 years ago. He changes oil and filters every now and then, car is a real beater. It keeps going and going, i bet it will rust of in half before it leaves someone on the side of the road. Too bad now since Chinese have take over Volvo they are no where nearly as reliable as older models.
There is some guy from Canada with a really old Volvo that has just passed the 3 million mile mark.

Good informative video. I currently own a Volvo S60 with 134500 miles on it on a 54 plate and it feels like it's done half that, it's been well looked after and aside from a power steering leak it drives spot on.
Love this channel-the most sense I've heard regarding this topic. On your last point the airport taxi I use each year is a Merc e-class diesel. Before its first MOT it had done 300K miles.
The next 3yrs it was upto 600k. Last time I used them -same car 800k and still mint. So this bears out your point about looking after for your livlihood. Think they have changed it now.
They did have one that had done 1.3Million miles before engine change!!!

my land rover defender has just under 200k miles. its just had its head gasket replaced but is like brand new again, so im hoping to get many more miles from it.
Hi Matt - Quite a few years ago I brought a 2 years old Citroen Xantia 6000 miles and it was nothing but trouble - I also bought a 150,000 mile 5 years old Volvo V70 and had no problems with it all - I think you nailed it with - it is down to the owner, service history etc - I am always wary of any 3 years old car with between 85000 to 120,000 miles as I have found over the years this where parts start to fail - discs, ball joints, cv joints suspension etc and they normally need a cambelt change - after 120.000 miles these jobs have normally been done - your Toyota must be on its 2nd and 3rd replacement parts - Brilliant video - best wishes Clay.
I totally agree with you, as an ex taxi driver my car was looked after and kept in mint condition due to it being my source of income. I still use the car for a daily run about and it still drives better than most lower mileage vehicles I drive. Another great review

True. My wife bought a 2007 Ford Ka in 2019 that had 9,600 miles on the clock. 2 years later the clutch suddenly went on a roundabout and had to call a breakdown truck to collect it.

I had a 200'000 mile Audi A4 and at 200'000 miles I treated it to a remap 😎👍🏼💪🏼😂 I serviced it every 5000 miles and it never missed a beat.
My A4 is at 300k. 24psi k04 tune.
Believe it or not a well cared for Audi will run until the planet stops spinning lol.

Highest mileage I've ever seen on a car was a Ford Mondeo Airport taxi from the Preesall Poulton-le-Fylde area it had 1.1 million on it. No joke there were even a news article on it lol.
I was that Taxi Driver, I had a B reg Diesel Cavalier with 330,000 on it when I finally quit cabbying, and I still ran it as a shove-it/hack for 18 months after that - it just refused to die. It did 45mpg around town or thrashing it up to Heathrow. It was a rare 5 speed and even more rare had power steering! It'll always hold a fond place in my heart.
It's strange comparing the view in the UK that a car approaching 100k miles is "high mileage" while in the US it might still be considered just run in!

I bought a Toyota Prius (around 10 years old at the time) with around 90k miles on the clock. After 17k miles that I clocked up on it, the engine was burning a considerable amount of oil. To resolve that issue, it would have been worth more than I got for the car part-ex. It was clear to me that I had to cut my losses and get rid of the thing. It was also clear that the previous owners never took care of the car, otherwise it would’ve done more miles before I got rid of it
Great video. I recently bought a 2014 Skoda Superb estate with 176K on the clock for cheap. Service history was patchy so it got a full service and the cambelt and water pump replaced. Still well under budget for a lower mileage '14 car and it's great.
I have a Landrover Tdi with just shy of 400,000 on the original engine. Just had a new brakes and suspension bushes all round. You are right to point out all the "other parts" wearing out. The interior plastics start to fatigue and fall off in your hand at high mileage. I drive an old Landrover so i stick them in the bin and take them off the feature list. Centre console. Optional extra now
My dad went through a few dozen cars. Almost all of them were high mileage cars. I think he did that to just drive his favourite cars. I remember us having a 400,000 km land cruiser 100 in 2013.
The thing looked like it came from a warzone.
But it never had a problem and my dad sold it for more than he bought it for in 2018.
An 09 C5 with 215K (now broken and waiting for me to repair it) and an 06 Corolla 214k and counting getting 66mpg. The wear is high and it's not always a straightforward journey but it's all doable and very rewarding. It's great to grow with your cars and get to know them
I always buy relatively high mileage cars (miles relative to age). It's a no brainer. The price difference always means cash sitting in the pocket ready to spend on repairs, but that cash is never all required. So long as you're even mildly careful when buying, you end up better off in the long run by far.
Best deal ever was a 1 owner, 10 year old, manual, Celica GT4, with 200,000kms that originally sold for $95,000 here in NZ. I paid $5K for it after being passed in at auction. In 10 years it had depreciated $90,000 because of the mileage and the only problem I had in 2 years was a cracked coolant overflow. The price for a low mileage car was around $25,000 so I essentially kept $20K in my pocket! (Turned out I knew the owner who was a doctor who commuted on highways between his 2 medical practices. His personalised plate on his new car gave it away.)
I sold my uncle a 1981 Mercedes 200 estate with 290k on the clock , he had it mot’d nine months later and it failed on...........one tyre and a windscreen wiper! Mercedes used to be good !

Over twenty years ago my friend sold a Mercedes 300d from about 1983. It was still running ok and had 600,000 miles on the clock.
Great video as always Matt 👍🏼 Few years ago I bought a 2007 SAAB 9-5 Vector Sport TiD AUTO saloon with 288000 miles on the clock, two owners from new with FSH and in perfect working order. It was originally a limo for a well known major UK airline (V.A.) doing 40K motorway miles per year for the first 6 ish years followed by a stint as a courtesy car at my local SAAB dealer for the next three years after that.
It was service twice a year, every year at SAAB main dealer and had a set of 4 premium tyres & a wheel alignment every year without fail.
I run it for a further seven months doing roughly a thousand miles per month without it missing a beat with just regular servicing. I was hoping to cross the 300K milestone in my position however I SOLD it on with 295000 when my New GOLF R finally arrived. The SAAB was still in perfect working orders with a long MOT and a fresh set of front discs & pads and 4 new tyres. I believe it is still on the road today.

I had my eye on my father-in-law’s immaculate Saab 95 2.2 TID auto and when the Mercedes dealership wanted to charge him £50 to dispose of it I pounced!!! What an absolutely brilliant car and built like a Panzer. I was so sad to let it go to make way for a Tesla.
@@ouethojlkjn Same thing kinda happened to me when I traded in my VW Golf mk4 1.9 SDI I was offered £100 so I said no way. It was my first car too but I needed something better, I gave it away to a mate who was a couple years younger than me a needed a first car really cheap. It Had 257,000 miles on it when I got rid of it and is now on 275,000 miles according to MOT history.
The "Newer High mileage car or older low mileage car" Great question and answer for this. The maintenance is the key. Super summary.
I think one of things people often forget about is the cost of depreciation. They may choose to ignore it. When you factor in depreciation, then the cost of running cars changes. An £800 bill for a clutch may seem expensive, but depreciation is often £2000/year. In this context high mileage cars can work really well. I had an E36 M3 with 150,000 miles which ran really well and did a few track days.
Hi there, my 2006 BMW 330d has 480,000kms on the clock - almost 300,000 miles - and never misses a beat. Regular servicing and sensible driving are a must!
I've owned Toyotas my entire adult life and never regretted it. Started with the old Toyota pickups with the 22R engines. Did the regular maintenance and got 250k miles with the only repair being an alternator at 200k that I was able to put in myself. Moved to a 4Runner, got 330k on that, and another 4Runner that got 290k. Doing the normal service things(belts hoses etc) when recommended I never got stuck. You can't beat that.
I know not every Toyota is as dependable, but they really have served me so well. My wife and I moved to England a while back and we're thinking of getting a car here. We both loved the look of Range Rovers, and started doing research...ummm no, I don't want to pay that much for stress.
I have a 2012 Toyota Hiace powervan. Brilliant but dated looking van, but second to none for reliability.
I had a BMW diesal 2010, 3 series. When I sold it , it had done 200,000 miles. I have to say it never missed a beat. All the MOT's where good. Occasional advisories. Maybe more luck than judgement ?!
I have always had high mileage cars the amount saved on buying the car has always outweighed any repairs. I had a Passat 1.9TDI with 320k very reliable plus parts were easily available for cheap from scrap yards. I now have a Tourareg 3.0V6 TDI with 200k runs great and even better after a remap. Would love to see a Tourareg review on the channel
My first car had the highest mileage. It was a 1994 Honda Accord EX Sedan with a manual transmission which I bought with 143,000 Miles on the clock. Besides the ECU going out at about 150,000K it never gave me a problem. The shift linkage felt a little stiff (especially in the cold) but in hind sight some fresh clutch fluid may have taken care of that.
I had a 225K MK2 Ford Focus 1.8 petrol, engine was surprisingly good, well serviced through its life, amazing car but I replaced the clutch then 3 weeks later the gearbox blew up, little annoyed I spent my money on the clutch but also I couldn’t believe and I’m still so shocked that, that car did 225K being a petrol
I currently own a 06 S max, 174K Miles needs a services but she’s strong
Unfortunately what can happen is when you’ve replaced a tired old clutch you put a brand-new power train on a tired old gearbox and this can lead to gearbox failure. This is what appears to have happened to my uncles old high mileage Audi A6…
Had a Citroen Berlingo van (2006 2.0 Turbo Diesel) that had 136k on clock when I bought it for £1525 in 2016. Put another 30-35k on it and got £700 for it when I decided to go back to cars after 4 and a half years. Serviced it regularly and it had some other bits and bobs done here and there. Not really very costly stuff, though. Recently bought a 180k Ford Mondeo (58 reg) with full service history from main Ford dealers. Runs great. I would happily buy a 200k-400k car in the future with the right price and history to go with it. Great video - keep up the good work.

Excellent educational Video on owning higher mileage cars. 💯% agree with your opinions. I have always had higher mileage cars, took care of them and they all have been exceptionally good for my family. Mostly owned Toyota and Lexus with 500,000 plus kms.
Agree mate, I bought a peugeot 406 hdi back in the day with 30k on it. I drove it as a taxi and took it to 254k in 5 years. I serviced it every 10k, and apart from general wear and tear items it never went wrong. The guy I sold it to took it to 450k miles! If its looked after it will last.

Always bought higher mileage cars with full history. Not space shuttle stuff, but 3 years old with 80k say, kept them 3 years put 40k on them and can still move them easily. Value wise it works for me. As long as you maintain them no real issues imho. Helpful vid. People get hung up on mileage, not using a car regularly can be very detrimental to its reliability.
after 25 years of company cars ( what a bargain that is ) I have spent the last few years buying my own transport. I knew enough to know its buy on service history not looks. I got 31k miles out of a 56 plate Picasso in 13 months before I decided enough was enough - then I got 8k miles in 6 months out of a 56 plate Scenic for £800. That got bumped and written off and her insurers gave me £1100 ( another bargain ) - now driving a £1k Scenic again - just check the history and go with that - don't get distracted by shiny paintwork or a jazzy after market stereo
I had a K reg VW Passat, 250000 miles & was still going well when I sold it, I also had a Vauxhall Astra 2.0di with 247000 I paid £200 for that & never had a problem with it.
I sold my well maintained BMW 530i with 155K miles because I thought it would start going wrong. It still felt like a new car when I traded it in for a 320D and then my troubles really started! I now wish I had taken the 530i up to 200K. I now think that age kills cars more than miles which I think is more or less what you said.
My company just bought a cheapo 2010 Vito Mercedes Van as a storage vehicle with 700,000km, or 450,000 miles. A huge amount of wear and tear inside, and doesn't quite drive as smoothly as it would've brand new, but after a replacement engine was put in, it is still a perfectly reliable workhorse. The reason for this lasting is most likely the previous owner using it for their work, driving gently and at proper temperature, and ensuring everything is kept up to spec and serviced regularly.
I personally drive a lot and bought a 2011 Audi S4 brand new, put 300,000km on it by commuting and long distant driving, and then sold it in 2018 when the DSG started having issues. It was an incredible workhorse and treated me very well. Then bought a 2018 golf R (not wanting to spend as much money haha) and have already put 100,000km or 60,000miles on it and will try reach 400,000 this time! Might take a good few years though.
I've had a few years back a 478000 mile volvo v40 2003 that was a good car until the engine just give up one day it's now beer cans

An interesting topic, I have just bought (Dec19) a 2003 VW Golf 1.4 Match with 120k on the clock, top-end of the engine needed to be re-built as the cam belts snapped, spent time (and money) on a real clean and full service, passed the MOT with no advisories, including the price of the car total spent £680, then £200 road tax and £300 insurance. It looks very smart, its for a run-around to save miles on my other car, cheap motoring. Regards, RichardA.
I've worked on cars that were high milage, such as ex Taxi's etc and wouldn't buy one. I've replaced stupid things like universal joints in the steering column shaft, door latches and hinges. The State in Australia where I live (N.T.), vehicles have to have a registration inspection every 12 months, so its a never ending battle keeping one on the road .
To be fair, the Northern Territories is not exactly your typical terrain and roads!
I had an old W210 Mercedes 290 TD with 540.000 miles on the clock, ran like a dream!
It all depends on the service it’s had because the engine is what costs the money when it goes wrong. The other components you mentioned such as suspension and bushes a wheel bearings are cheap to fix especially when you do the work yourself.
My Mercedes E-klasse taxi(2014) had passed 400.000 miles when i sold it. It went on as a taxi for 2 more years after that. No other cost. than service for six years. Wonderful car.
The most reliable car I've owned was a 2003 Volvo S60 D5. It was pretty well looked after, but I bought it at 175k miles and took it to 205k, my friend still owns it at 255k. I had to change the original wishbones at 203k...!
I remember reading in the past, "...make sure it's not an ex-taxi with intergalactic miles" and that stuck with me. But your different take on the matter makes perfect sense. As long as the sick and kebabs has been cleaned up.
My 1996 Volvo 940 2.4 diesel (VW van engine) estate was at 222,583 miles when it was crashed into last year. That's my record. The new owner says he intends to put it back in the road with a new wing and headlight.

I paid £200 for an ex-taxi 2006 Peugeot Expert Eurobus with 399,000 miles on the clock in January 2019. I didn't put it on the road until July, but in November the short internal cam chain snapped at 404,000 miles (the vehicle was on its third engine at the time). However, I'm so attached to the vehicle I ended up paying £1400 for a secondhand engine and gearbox (to replace the usable but worn original), plus a clutch, cambelt, other service parts, and fitting. It's now got 408,000 on the clock and going better than ever, as a family car, work vehicle and van. Just about every component is worn down to a nub, but I love it.
I agree with what you said 100% 👍I always have my car serviced every 6 months and never had a problem, my last car was a Honda Accord which had done 270,000 ks. I only changed my car because I was offered a great deal on a Mercedes Benz.
Im in South Africa, have a 2013 Hyundai i20 1.4 Diesel. 183000km now, no problems at all. Nothing other than my regular oil changes and diesel filters at specified km in the owners manual and yes, i do everything myself. Only thing i did was net brake pads in the front with new disc rotors as they were warped.

Sept 2023 - just out of a taxi, 2010 diesel avensis, 662,000km on the odometer. Sounded sweet as a plumb, very little noise (even though it was a petrol with how quietly it idoled) no creaks or groans in movement. Asked the taxi driver a out it, he said he has only ever given it a basic service once a quarter and never had to replace any engine component's whatsoever, merely tyres and the odd rubber seal or gasket. While I agree that a cars quality after many miles is a testament to the owner, it certainly helps to have a vehicle with an esteemed build quality. Probably a cause-effect cycle - owners concerned with reliability gravitate towards certain brands but are also likely conservative enough to ensure the reliability of the car through proper care and attention. Positive cycle.
I was just wondering, was that Avensis Multidrive CVT? I wonder if it is risky to buy 340.000km 2016 2.0 petrol with that CVT? Not sure how long those transmissions can last? Cheers
I used to deliver vehicles up and down the country with a company , 1998 mitsubishi shogun 2800 diesel lwb and brenderup trailer , that vehicle never ever broke down and had 368,000 miles on it when the company owner donated it to his local vicar in the Lake district . (He was a born again Christian )
Reluctantly traded in a '53 Passat estate last year with 155k on it, with a very short MOT and several issues needing attention. Only got £200 for it from the dealer when I bought a '13 Mazda 6 estate in exchange. I assumed it would just get scrapped despite it still being a solid enough car so I was really happy to see someone had got it MOT'd and it's still on the road today. Makes me feel slightly better for dumping an old, faithful friend after 8 years of service.

Had a Skoda Octavia, had just over 250,000 miles on it when we got a rid of it. It had 210,000 miles on it when we bought it.
I had a 350,000 km 92 GQ Patrol - Petrol from new. Sold it to a friwnd of a friend and it is still going 9 years later, I think. I don't know the k's now, but guessing around 550,000.
I owned a 1993 Daihatsu Charade1.3 here in Australia, It finally gave up the ghost at 645,000 kilometres. Great little car, it did quiet a few long trips in its life and only let me down once (computer went haywire).
Give me lots of motorway miles any day, ex lease straight from the auctions.

Ive got a Diesel Mercedes E Class 2010. I bought it when it had done 60.000. It's now done 117.000. It's fully serviced and drives beautifully. I drive it very carefully. I'm getting over 40 mpg. (My wife calls me Captain Slow) I used to drive 3500 miles per month when I was working and I was always in a rush. Now I'm retired I'm just enjoying the journey.
I'm thinking my next car might be a hybrid or similar and I might as well keep on running it as it owes me nothing and I still love it.
Highest mileage I've drove is a 600,000 mile citroen berlingo. It was abused, neglected, had quite a few faults but still always ran

BMW E60 525i M54b25 petrol engine with 378.xxx KM. Doing well. Mostly on the highway cruising ~70km-100km a day and parking it in the garage. Slowly driving the engine warm and parking it in a closed garage will keep your car more reliable for sure.
Mine was 330,000 miles on my 1964 Volvo P1800S which I drove daily for about 6 years. Its the car in my profile pic. Stupidly I sold it about 20 years ago and regret it ever since.

David FE a Volvo P1800 is the ultimate high mileage car .One has clocked up 3.267 million miles in its original engine and gearbox -clutch needed changing at 1.7 million miles .Has used 112000 gallons of petrol , 438 spark plugs and 33 sets of tyres and has never broken down unexpectedly in 54 years !!!

Toyota Avensis 2.0 petrol 2005, executive station wagon all in, bought 3 years ago with 238000kms, has now 286000 kms. Clutch changed and gearbox 5th speed broke, changed whole box for a used one. Runs very smoothly, I am loving this car.
Before had a Subaru Forester 2.0 turbo from 2000, sold it to buy the Avensis with 315000 kms and still running nicely. Long live the old japanese cars!!
