I am a huge fan of Unsolved Mysteries watch every single episode and I really miss Robert Stack big time! Dennis Farina is good but he can NEVER replace Robert Stack there is a charisma about Robert Stack that Dennis Farina is either lacking or doesn't have. Not taking anything away from Dennis he is still a good host but Robert has a hauntingly chill in his voice and a charismatic presence about him which makes Unsolved Mysteries that much more exciting to watch! Robert's voice and charisma send chills down my spine or takes me through a wide range of emotions depend on the subject and the stories. I remember as a teenager in the 80's when the first episode aired(with Raymond Burr on January 20th 1987) it use to come on every Wednesday evening at 7pm I would literally drop whatever I did(unless it's something important) just to make it home on time to watch it I would NEVER miss a single episode of it! I was so sad to learn of Robert Stack's death on May of 2003 at the age of 84 I thought there will be no more Unsolved Mysteries after that until it was replace with Dennis Farina with a new updated version of it that I didn't like as much as the original but still good. Unsolved Mysteries had some also short lived host like Raymond Burr(launched the series in 1987), Karl Malden, and Virginia Madsen(hosted in 1999). Dennis Farina(hosted from 2008-2010) is good but it's NEVER the same without Robert Stack HE IS Unsolved Mysteries. Virginia Madsen was the only UM female host that's still alive while all the male are gone but will always be remembered. RIP to Raymond Burr, Karl Madsen, Dennis Farina, and to the one and only true host of Unsolved Mysteries ROBERT STACK!!!

I remember watching the Victorio Peak segment when I was a kid and taking my friends and I to hunt for treasure in the creek by my house. We were convinced there must be treasure there.
Kari Lynn Nixon story absolutely broke my heart. When I saw this story for the first time during Quarantine2020 I was hoping for a good update but when it revealed that she was murdered....it shattered me. I don’t know why.
I just wanted to comment and say I felt the same way. What really bothered me were those people in South Carolina who dangled hope in front of those poor parents just for attention. Everything about that story was terrible and tragic.

Kari's and Dexter's stories are particularly wrenching and heartbreaking. I became emotional over these stories. I also wish that Doc had handled everything differently, just everything. How horrible the outcomes are to these stories.

On the UM web-page, it states that apparently the girl in the concert-crowd video was not Kari, but was merely a very similar look-alike; they know this because it was later proven that Kari had been murdered a long time before this concert took place. However, this sighting kept investigators working on Kari's case for longer than they would normally have, and ultimately it was solved when Robert Jones led police to where he'd buried Kari's body.

It is cause he was abducted and killed by a total stranger. And the stranger is still out there living and laughing and perhaps might be dead at this point.
The Stefonek case is such a frightening one because it defies so many possibilities of why and what. One clue leads to another question that defies the clue. Almost forty years on now and this case is honestly no closer to being figured out than it was at the time. The murderer's truck was noted as being lived in by the attendant that morning and the police speculated that he killed Dexter not for money but for gasoline. Yet the graffiti in the bathroom that was considered enough to be a clue hinted at something sexual. This is two polar opposite causations: a desperate itinerant and a sexual misadventure. I always thought that the story of the dump was somehow incorrect; I think that the killer never returned with his belongings but instead they were just always there. But then why the graffiti thought to be the killer's? So, we have a case of disjointed parts and clues that contradict each other, really. The case is also unsettling for me because I can relate to the strangeness found at a roadside rest stop. I used to travel weekly across my state and sometimes I travelled back very late at night to be home in the morning. I would take short naps to regain my stamina before moving again, but there was one stop along my way that I learned to never go to again. The first time there I got propositioned for drugs; the second time I got propositioned for a ride and then for sex; and the third time I was accosted by a homeless man whom would not leave until I gave him money. Dexter may have just been unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Just this year (2024), police released the name of a person-of-interest in the Stefonek case whom they said they feel convinced is responsible for Dexter's murder. He is 79 and already serving in a Nevada prison, presumably until he dies, for another murder, and the police are not filing charges due to not posessing enough indisputable evidence. But according to them they feel enough similarities exist to point the finger of blame at him. That man, of-course, is not talking.
*Spoiler* Update about Kari Lynn Nixon: Kari Lynn Nixon's remains were found in January 1994. She was abducted at gunpoint on her walk home. After being sexually assaulted, she was strangled, shot and buried the next morning about about 2 miles from her home. She was never in SC. Her killer was sentenced to 18 years-to life and has been denied parole numerous times. He filed an appeal in 2018 to have his conviction vacated, which was denied. Her father, Gary Nixon, who was widely criticized for sending his daughter out instead of going himself died in 2011.

Then that epilogue was like getting kicked in gut. I cried for Kari Nixon. It was just chance. She died in that deplorable manner so close to her home out of sheer chance. I just hope there is some universal justice to deal with her killer after he's dead and gone.

No, it was perfect to nuke White Sands is famous. They made it government property in 1945, and dropped the first atomic bomb there. If I found all that gold it would have been long removed. Within weeks I would have bought a house with it, and reburied on my own property. reading further into the case of Dexter Stefonek I feel that it was a gay tryst. Back in the 80's and 90's rest stops were popular meeting places for homosexual lovers. My first theory is that Dexter pre arranged to meet this man or was "cruising." He may have chosen rest stops over motels for this reason. He then met a man, engaged in sexual activity and the man then shot and beat him out of guilt. Second theory is that the man came onto Dexter and when Dexter didn't respond to his advances the man became angry and murdered Dexter. The third ties into the first in that Dexter arranged to meet this man or met him there and the man's intent was to murder a homosexual. The graffiti regarding hot jock can be deciphered as "hot jock," = homosexual, "shot wad," = semen, "from Wisconsin," = either Dexter or a long haul trucker either destined for or originating from Wisconsin

Not taking anything away from Dennis he is still a good host but Robert has a hauntingly chill in his voice and a charismatic presence about him which makes Unsolved Mysteries that much more exciting to watch! Robert's voice and charisma send chills down my spine or takes me through a wide range of emotions depend on the subject and the stories. I remember as a teenager in the 80's when the first episode aired(with Raymond Burr on January 20th 1987) it use to come on every Wednesday evening at 7pm I would literally drop whatever I did(unless it's something important) just to make it home on time to watch it I would NEVER miss a single episode of it! I was so sad to learn of Robert Stack's death on May of 2003 at the age of 84 I thought there will be no more Unsolved Mysteries after that until it was replace with Dennis Farina with a new updated version of it that I didn't like as much as the original but still good. Unsolved Mysteries had some also short lived host like Raymond Burr(launched the series in 1987), Karl Malden, and Virginia Madsen(hosted in 1999). Dennis Farina(hosted from 2008-2010) is good but it's NEVER the same without Robert Stack HE IS Unsolved Mysteries. Virginia Madsen was the only UM female host that's still alive while all the male are gone but will always be remembered. RIP to Raymond Burr, Karl Madsen, Dennis Farina, and to the one and only true host of Unsolved Mysteries ROBERT STACK!!!

I remember watching the Victorio Peak segment when I was a kid and taking my friends and I to hunt for treasure in the creek by my house. We were convinced there must be treasure there.
Kari Lynn Nixon story absolutely broke my heart. When I saw this story for the first time during Quarantine2020 I was hoping for a good update but when it revealed that she was murdered....it shattered me. I don’t know why.

Kari Nixon’s story is positively heartbreaking.
On the UM web-page, it states that apparently the girl in the concert-crowd video was not Kari, but was merely a very similar look-alike; they know this because it was later proven that Kari had been murdered a long time before this concert took place. However, this sighting kept investigators working on Kari's case for longer than they would normally have, and ultimately it was solved when Robert Jones led police to where he'd buried Kari's body.

The Stefonek case is such a frightening one because it defies so many possibilities of why and what. One clue leads to another question that defies the clue. Almost forty years on now and this case is honestly no closer to being figured out than it was at the time. The murderer's truck was noted as being lived in by the attendant that morning and the police speculated that he killed Dexter not for money but for gasoline. Yet the graffiti in the bathroom that was considered enough to be a clue hinted at something sexual. This is two polar opposite causations: a desperate itinerant and a sexual misadventure. I always thought that the story of the dump was somehow incorrect; I think that the killer never returned with his belongings but instead they were just always there. But then why the graffiti thought to be the killer's? So, we have a case of disjointed parts and clues that contradict each other, really. The case is also unsettling for me because I can relate to the strangeness found at a roadside rest stop. I used to travel weekly across my state and sometimes I travelled back very late at night to be home in the morning. I would take short naps to regain my stamina before moving again, but there was one stop along my way that I learned to never go to again. The first time there I got propositioned for drugs; the second time I got propositioned for a ride and then for sex; and the third time I was accosted by a homeless man whom would not leave until I gave him money. Dexter may have just been unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That makes me think of Edward W Edwards. I’m pretty sure he was living in Montana at the time

Just this year (2024), police released the name of a person-of-interest in the Stefonek case whom they said they feel convinced is responsible for Dexter's murder. He is 79 and already serving in a Nevada prison, presumably until he dies, for another murder, and the police are not filing charges due to not posessing enough indisputable evidence. But according to them they feel enough similarities exist to point the finger of blame at him. That man, of-course, is not talking.

Kari Lynn Nixon's remains were found in January 1994. She was abducted at gunpoint on her walk home. After being sexually assaulted, she was strangled, shot and buried the next morning about about 2 miles from her home. She was never in SC.
Her killer was sentenced to 18 years-to life and has been denied parole numerous times. He filed an appeal in 2018 to have his conviction vacated, which was denied.
Her father, Gary Nixon, who was widely criticized for sending his daughter out instead of going himself died in 2011.
Yeah people are always blamed afterwards for not being able to see into the future... people want to fool themselves they're safe if they just behave right. Poor bloke. Poor Kari. Heartbreaking story altogether. I'm glad they caught the murderous perv.

kari would be 2 years younger than me today. She was a pretty girl, and I was captivated by this story; confident that was her in the video, and she would contact her parents. Then that epilogue was like getting kicked in gut. I cried for Kari Nixon. It was just chance. She died in that deplorable manner so close to her home out of sheer chance. I just hope there is some universal justice to deal with her killer after he's dead and gone.

At the time of Kari's disappearance, Robert was twenty-three-years-old and living in Bar Harbor, Maine with his family. On the week that she vanished, he returned to his hometown for a week-long visit. On the night of June 22, he spotted her while he was buying beer at the neighborhood market. He followed her and forced her into his car at gunpoint. He then drove her to his parents' cabin where he raped, strangled, and shot her. He buried her on their remote Jay property the following morning. He later returned to the Au Sable Forks area where he settled with his family, only 200 yards from where he had buried her. Under the negotiated plea, he secured a sentence of eighteen-years to life for the robberies and her murder.
Robert is currently an inmate at Wyoming Correctional Facility in New York. Based on his 1994 plea agreement he was granted his first parole hearing in 2011 where he was denied. All subsequent appeals have been denied and he will next be eligible for parole in January of 2021. In 2018, Robert attempted to appeal his original 1994 confession and conviction, the higher courts of New York rejected his appeal. He has stated that he abducted the victim because of marital difficulties; claiming Theresa had cheated on him as well as claiming he had committed robbery in order to intentionally get caught.
Sadly, on December 3, 2007, Kari’s brother, Jonathan Edward Nixon, died after a yearlong battle with ALS. He was survived by a daughter also named Kari Lynn Nixon in her aunt's honor. Also, their father, Gary, passed away in 2011

I remember so much from the Dexter Stephonic episode from seeing it just once as a kid, when it was on real TV! There used to be a portion of the Victorio Peak story devoted to a man named Orby Swanner, who told his sister and brother-in-law in Texas about the treasure. No idea why that was cut.

If I kill someone and use their vehicle, make sure to adjust the driver's seat before leaving. I don't know how many times LE takes the position of the driver's seat into account.

On January 19, 2024, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office announced that they believed seventy-nine-year-old Charles Gary Sullivan was Dexter's killer. He is currently serving a fifteen-year sentence for the 1979 murder of Julia Woodward, who was killed in Reno, Nevada. He was arrested for her murder in 2019 after DNA evidence linked him to the crime. He previously had to provide a DNA sample when he was required to register as a sex offender following a 2007 sexual assault case in California. The surviving members of Dexter's family consider Sullivan to in fact be Dexter's killer and consider the case solved
If I found all that gold it would have been long removed. Within weeks I would have bought a house with it, and reburied on my own property. Maybe I would have given the artifacts up to TRUSTABLE museums, not the smithsonian so they could claim its in the basement for 100 years with all the other priceless artifacts that should belong to everyone.

There was no treasure. Notice the only people who saw it were people close to Doc and instead of removing it a bunch of mishaps happened to prevent him from doing so. The real mystery is how so many people believed this nonsense.

Don't understand how a father can have his teen daughter walk to a store at 9:30pm. If he wanted something, why didn't he just go himself instead of sending his her to go. Just heart breaking.

There should be DVD rereleases of the series and I’m talking about the extra footage we never seen before on the series.
Those DVD releases are out of print and are expensive now. Besides, those DVD's were not season sets on DVD/Bluray. I am hoping that one day either Flimrise or some other studio will get the rights to release every season/segment of the Robert Stack era of Unsolved Mysteries on DVD/bluray.

reading further into the case of Dexter Stefonek I feel that it was a gay tryst. Back in the 80's and 90's rest stops were popular meeting places for homosexual lovers. My first theory is that Dexter pre arranged to meet this man or was "cruising." He may have chosen rest stops over motels for this reason. He then met a man, engaged in sexual activity and the man then shot and beat him out of guilt. Second theory is that the man came onto Dexter and when Dexter didn't respond to his advances the man became angry and murdered Dexter. The third ties into the first in that Dexter arranged to meet this man or met him there and the man's intent was to murder a homosexual. The graffiti regarding hot jock can be deciphered as "hot jock," = homosexual, "shot wad," = semen, "from Wisconsin," = either Dexter or a long haul trucker either destined for or originating from Wisconsin
