I was a bus boy at a York Steak house in 1981. Being a musician my self I loved listening to the Muzak that came from the overhead speakers. My favorite arrangement was a woodwind cover of what do you get when you fall in love.

When I would often hear the Rolling Stones's Jumping Jack Flash, it reminded me of Star Market's storerooms. -Mark Weintraub.
I wish my local Walmart store can play MUZAK. The music that's aired now in some open plazas and department stores are too hip and poppy and they all have singers who I never heard of. When you compare MUZAK to these songs nowadays, MUZAK had no singers. It was all instrumental. It was you, the shopper or a passerby, that would sing silently or hum to a familiar tune. And the MUZAK songs sounded like, "lighter than air" giving the listener a relaxed feeling rather than "shop til you drop" zingo rush shopping. For me, MUZAK kinda made you hang around the store longer and just browse around once I have what I need all in my shopping cart. I good department store should play music that makes you feel that you are welcome to come in and enjoy your stay rather than feeling that you have to rush just to get out in a hurry. Right? Some people commenting here state the tapes were not played on the planes., rather played at the terminal. I don't know how the planes gave a selection of music to listen to on the plane.
I just checked the original iRiver MP3 file recorded in 2005. Those skips are there also. Since I have sold those 4 tapes, there is no way for me to check if it is on the tape or did the iRiver do it. I would like to believe that the iRiver did not do it since nothing is supposed to interrupt it. Now It is up to the person I sold the tapes to figure out.
Senza Fine (Love Theme from “Flight of the Phoenix”) arranged by Phil Bodner himself, a custom recording for muzak, slightly different from the brass ring rendition.
Fascinating find! Where would this music have been played, I wonder...? At a United sales office? Or aboard the aircraft itself? Perhaps if an airport’s entire concourse was devoted to United, it might be playing there... But, then, if the tape were to start over after only 90 minutes, that would be awfully repetitive for travelers and staff alike...
There could have been a tape player on the plane. Most likely you would select the type of music you wanted to listen to during the flight. If multiple choices, there would have to be several tape players on board. They could have a player where the take-up reel were stacked on top of the supply reel. 7" reel would fit in maybe 8 x 8 x 2 inch space. It would be more practical to play at a United Airlines terminal. Perhaps someone who worked for the airline back then knows the true answer. Then maybe a description of the machine used to play them.
@@CV2200A I flew as a passenger on United flights in the 70's and they played music while boarding and at the destination, but not during the flight. Side note: commercial jets use 400 Hz AC power, so motors in tape players could sync to it. Too bad you didn't know all the names of the songs, or the start times in the above playlist. There were a few I wanted to check out, but I wasn't paying attention to what song # I was on
Was this played in the airports and terminals?
Some people commenting here state the tapes were not played on the planes., rather played at the terminal. I don't know how the planes gave a selection of music to listen to on the plane.
I used to have a dub of this on rtr, recorded Aphex Twin over it :p
1:23- Whoa! Tape got stretched.
what happened to the tape at 24:52, 24:54 and 25:05
I just checked the original iRiver MP3 file recorded in 2005. Those skips are there also. Since I have sold those 4 tapes, there is no way for me to check if it is on the tape or did the iRiver do it. I would like to believe that the iRiver did not do it since nothing is supposed to interrupt it. Now It is up to the person I sold the tapes to figure out.
2:02
Senza Fine (Love Theme from “Flight of the Phoenix”) arranged by Phil Bodner himself, a custom recording for muzak, slightly different from the brass ring rendition.

15:12 is this "Surfing USA"?
No. This song 07 has been identified as "Honolulu Baby" which can be found elsewhere on RUclips.
At a destination once, the ground power APU apparently wasn't a clean 400 Hz, so the music had terrible wow and flutter.
Unknown fact...MUZAK did not supply music to elevators
They got it via SCA on the FM radio band.
How much would it be to to buy these airline tapes off of you? Asking for a friend
Is there a way to leave a private message about this? This way, contact information can be kept private.
@@CV2200A well if you gave me your email that would work as a good way of communicating
