- Muzak tape played on United Airlines (Fly The Friendly Skies Of United).
7 inch reels fit conveniently on a plane recorded 2 track mono at 3 3/4 IPS.
Classic music tunes with some selections relating to travel and places. Muzak custom recorded, Sound Hound could not identify most selections.
About 45 minutes a side. 1960s UAL4148 36 UAL (Label for both sides A & B)
Muzak Airline Tape Labeling System:
1. UAL-413B or SPS5460 Unique Program Number
2. 32, 28, 57, 132 or 136 Copy Number of the Program
3. UAL, Delta or Southern Airline ID (UAL for United)
The same unique Program Number could be on many Planes in the fleet.
The Airline could have rotated different Programs on the same route so that frequent flyers won't have to listen to the same program too frequently.
It is not clear how often or who (airline or Muzak) would rotate the tapes, if at all.

This Muzak keeps me from having a mental breakdown while I do my engineering homework.
My first taste of the great instrumental 1930's- 40's music was indeed on the little air tube headphones on all of my flights on Delta from '84- '88. I thought, "This is what the old people are listening to...there is something infectious about it."
Of course this Muzak Airline Tape 1 side B is the more hip, but still before my time, music. As a student at Musicians Institute I was aware of my instructors having played on many of these albums when they were younger. Howard Roberts started MI (GIT, BIT, PIT, ands there was a KIT before my time there in '84- '85. When I was at MI it was the progressive jazzers, and metal shredders. I realized I hated both. I always felt like I was born 50 years too late. It took years of guitar playing to realize I was on the wrong instrument. Now I'm a happy theatre organsist, playing the old people music I heard in those Delta Airline air headphones...
I only remember hearing Muzak on a plane one time. I flew from McGuire Airforce base to Rein-Mein Air force base on a world Airlines charter. When the plane landed the Muzak started coming out of the cabin speakers. A nice touch. My last flight on southwest was just the click click of carry on bags.

This is indeed a most amazing find. Thank you so much for uploading and sharing because some of us are just wild about these unique and curious Muzak finds being shared and maybe a community can be made of all of us who love the Muzak.

Definitely love this music. It was the background music of my "kid" life -- 69yr old now. Always thought it was sophisticated. It was played on AM radio along with Steve and Edie, Jack Jones, Andy Williams, Sinatra etc. Music for sure has emotional power. It was certainly a different time back then.

As a music historian I'm working on identifying some, most, or ALL these songs. However this must be from around 1966 or 1967 being that "Strangers In The Night" was composed & released in 1966 by Bert Kaempfert, & Sung by Frank Sinatra. "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" was sung by Paul Anka & released in 1959. "It's Not Unusual" was composed by Les Reed & Gordon Mills in 1964 & first recorded by Brenda Lee in 1965 for her album "Too Many Rivers" later that same year Tom Jones put it on the charts, & followed him thru his singing career. "L.O.V.E." was also another composed by Bert Kaempfert in 1964 and recorded by Nat King Cole for his album of the same name in 1965.
I had no idea Kaempfert composed strangers in the night. Pretty cool.
This tape is from the early 70s. Side A of this tape contains a track from one of MUZAK’s demonstration vinyls, which was released in 1969.
I am going to play this next time I go on a flight. With noise-cancelling headphones and a good quality N95 face mask, I can just drift away to another land, if just for a short moment in time.

I flew on numerous flights with United back in the 70s and I might be able to offer some insight. If this tape was used for in-flight muzak played through the cabin's PA, I can't help you.
But, if this tape was piped into the in-fight entertainment system ie: the hollowed tube headphones they'd hand out, and you plugged into the arm rest, then you're in luck. I think they had 6 or 7 channels to select from, this could have been from their "easy listening" channel.
They also had a very good comedy channel, a Hawaiian music channel, a classical channel, and one for the in flight-movie. Audio and movie selections were listed in their magazine, 'Mainliner', which changed every month or every quarter.
Selections varied by whether it was an eastbound or westbound flight. I think the music selection might have been changed every season or quarter, perhaps.
For example; NY to Chicago, usually a 727, had no headphones, NY to Denver, generally a DC-8 or 10, did but no movie. NY to LAX or SFO or Hawaii added a movie to your entertainment. For DC-8s, the phones plugged into this terminal in the seat, located just to the left of your head. For other aircraft types, you plugged into the arm rest. Hope this helped.

Don’t think it is. I jsut don’t think it’s likely they would take a slow crooner and make it into a soulful pop arrangement.

I own one of the Reel to Reel Muzak tape decks that hold the 8 hour 14 inch reels of tape.
Any 14" reel-to-reel half track mono machine with 3 3/4 ips speed can play those tapes. It would be interesting to know if the genuine Muzak ones have other speeds other than 3 3/4 ips. My other video ruclips.net/video/H0rkDQ54Cdk/видео.html shows the Muzak machines. A 10" reel gives 1 hour per side at 7.5 ips. 14" reels double that and 3 3/4 ips doubles to give 4 hours per side or 8 hours total playing time per tape. In the late 1960s, I purchased a few of these 14" tapes that Muzak had erased and wound them down to 7" reels. I still have a few of the empty 14" reels but never had a machine that they would fit on.

My deck plays the 14 inch reels at only 3 3/4 ips. No other speed is on this deck made by Presto. The 14 inch tapes are recorded in a 14 minute block. After every 14 minute block a 25 cycle tone is recorded on the tape which would stop the mechanism for 1 minute. After that the deck would start by itself for another 14 minutes.
interesting they would program their machines like that, but I guess a minute to break up the music now and then would help keep people from getting tired of the music. When I make my Music By Muzak radio program ill make sure to add a feature like that to it.
It could have been an automatic switching system to mix up the tracks, so people would not get too used to the selections being recorded a certain way(employees of stores had to listen to this all shift long) when it was being broadcast over the airwaves. Muzak had contracts with many radio stations to use their sub-carrier radio frequencies (usually AM band) to broadcast the music in local areas to customers who paid to have the music piped in.

@@PneumatinisPlaktukas15 all of the hawaiian ones were taken from eddie bush transcritptions, but like with most of the transcriptions, they were destroyed years ago. this one was truly a stroke of luck.

MsKiTTy1138 on the A side, there are songs that were recorded and released in 1968, so I’m assuming it has to be 1968 and forward.

curious: if mono, why 2-track?
One mono audio track plays one side, flip over to play other track going the other way. Common stereo format was called 4 track, two tracks (stereo) one side, two going the other way on second side. Common broadcast formats were single track mono and 2 track stereo. Rewind after play. If you turned the tape over after listening, it would sound backwards. Back to 2 track mono, the Muzak playback machines did auto reverse even the ones on the airplanes. To see the tapes for background music on the ground view
