  • Dean Potter was an innovator and legend in all three extreme sports for which he held numerous world records. His untimely passing, which occurred on May 17, 2015, made headlines across major news outlets around the world, a testament to the impact he had in the world of sport and beyond. Known for his bold innovations in climbing, line-walking and flight, Potter has spent much of the past two decades in front of the camera. Always fascinated by the boundaries between life and death, When Dogs Fly traces Potter's inspiration to BASE-jump in a wingsuit with his mini four-legged dog Whisper. With decades of experience in nature's most dangerous arts, Potter wanted to share his love of life and aviation with his lifelong companion. With small goggles over his eyes, a protective sleeve around his ears, and safely at his master's side, Whisper becomes the first-ever flying dog in a wingsuit. When Dogs Fly is a testament to the beauty of Potter's spirit, his devotion to his craft, and his relationship with his family and his lifelong companion, Whisper.

I did in fact know Dean personally as he was a customer where I worked in Yosemite. He never mentioned his accomplishments to me, and I did not know of his fame until a co-worker told me about it. We talked most of music and dogs, his blue heeler, Whisper, right by his side all the time. I guarantee he was ok with his death because he was just that way. Pragmatic, reasonably happy, but motivated to do these incredible things he did. RIP my friend.

I couldn't even finish watching this. To think that it was okay to subject his dog to that kind of danger makes my blood boil. Now I see through the comments that he died during one of these flights. I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether Whisper, who had no choice on these flights, didn't have to pay the ultimate price with him. I truly hope that she did not.

I knew Dean and Whisper personally. Whisper was happy with and trusted Dean, but was very wary of strangers. There was no cruelty involved whatsoever. Just love between those 2. When people leave their dogs at home, do the dogs wish they could go with you or wish that you leave them alone? They always want to go. Whisper was the same.

"She actually goes to sleep occasionally".
Yeah. Being tigbtly strapped into a "rig" that restricts her breathing and circulation can make a dog "fall asleep".
Of course there is more than one reason animals close their eyes than simply being asleep.

The second he endangers his sweet dog is the second I‘m bailing. I actually already know the story, but seeing him do this to his dog is infuriating and sickening. That is a completely selfish choice and is the same as taking a baby with him because they have absolutely no say in the matter. If you want to endanger yourself, have at it, who gives a crap. But when you do that to an innocent animal, you’re just a complete POS.

    • @JB5D

Those were not black birds, those were crows also named ravens.
What if the dog falls from the pack? Well, probably she's not gonna fly.
You want the dog not to fall? Leave it at home. It's a dog, not a bird.
    ... ... ...
    Seriously:
This is a fine piece of art, because thoughts and images of high level risk athlete are portrayed in the most direct manner.
Sometimes he resembles me to Antoine Saint Exupery, he was also so candid and naif; and at the same time courageous to the extreme.
However, to my point of view, and also as Exupery did; sometimes he goes too far in his insight voyage, despising everyday/regular world; which should be the frame of any healthy human experience.
High level risk athletes, as Potter was, should be given not only money and sports goods; but also psychological support.
Living constantly near death experiences not only drives anyone to PTSD, but also to become a kind misfit unable to understand and appreciate fundamental life issues like money, home, relations...
