The drum major for our high school band used to do this great trick where it looked like he tossed the baton way up in the air, and it never comes down. After everyone was wondering what happened, he'd pull it from behind his back. He became Ohio State's drum major around 1975 or '76, and did the same thing during Ohio State games. His name was Tom Peters. I never knew if later drum majors started doing it, too.

Maren Kesinger, High School Marching Band is Great!! I am a Freshman but my school is small enough for me to be a snare drum. If you high school is big, you will most likely be put on bass drum or cymbals but when you get to be a Junior or a Senior, You will get a shot at snare. My High School is Eastmark High School and It is brand new so We have a Drumline of only 5 and a Marching band of 13. The Best Part about this though is We are the Inaugural Marching Band, Drumline and Color Guard so for our Drumline Cadences, We get to rename them and they will stay that way for years to come. All i'm saying is, you are going to LOVE Marching Band!
As a sophomore in a fairly large band (110 players) I can say, you will enjoy marching band a lot. All of the sections are like family, you help one another when you need it. Plus being the spirit of football games is the best feeling you could have in band. I hope you’ll both have the great experiences I had my freshman year
Though I most likely won't go to Ohio State due to money reasons. I will definitely be in the marching band at Youngstown State University. I'm a sophomore in high school and can't wait for the experience of marching band in college

Christian Teague i am (obviously) not ryan, but seeing as im in OSU’s band program i think i can help you out. As for getting into OSU itself its all about your high school GPA, test scores, and that sort of thing. For the band, id recommend taking the first year in athletic band. It has all the same songs as marching band, but you dont have to audition. In the spring semester, we march a pregame and halftime show for the spring game, which gets you used to marching OSU style and things loke that, then attend summer sessions the summer after, then tryout for the marching band.
Go to as many summer sessions as possible and the OSUMB Summer Clinic if you're still in high school/graduating. Look up as many videos as you can as well. You can also be a member of the band if you go to Capital University, Otterbein University, or Columbus State Community College. You can also contact the staff at tbdbitl.osu.edu to get in touch with squad leaders like myself who will help you out!
No reason you can’t try out freshman year. Bad advice not to audition first year. Gets you in front of veterans and advice immediately. More familiarity is better- and the athletic band comes nowhere near the training for the marching band. The fundamentals are glossed over and none of difficult stuff is ever addressed. It helps- but summer sessions are far more important.
Does anyone know the marching technique they use? Are they marching toe-down? It’s hard to tell, and I’m used to marching heel-toe so I don’t know if theirs is different
Taco Cat OSU primarily marches toe-down. The primary fundamentals pretty much have you on the balls of your feet the whole time. We’ll do heel toe occasionally but only in like parade marching.
Are you sure the top of your bodies are not hovering of the ground look how still you are and hi high your feet go sometimes evening if you roll step that seems hard to me.
Just have fun with it. If you went through all the preseason practice obviously you care about marching and will be good. Just put on your best show you can and that's all anyone can ask of you
