I think these content creators are getting older and what they wanted in life when they were 20 is very different now at 30. Life goals change. Spending every waking moment editing and filming might have been cool at 24, but at 34, it is sucking away the little time that we have in our lives.

True, my favorite was working at MCN's in 2016 and realizing content that work in 2010 doesn't anymore so we had a handful of creators that literally had mental breakdowns and moved back home. It was weird. The ones who managed went back to school and pivoted to something new. I think Elle and Blaire are the best example of pivots especially Blair.

@@ashleyelll When you work for yourself, you are pretty much always working. RUclips is a huge time commitment. Often times you feel guilty for not working when you have free time. That is not the case when you work an 8 hour shift somewhere. You run out of your workplace the moment your shift is over and don't think about it until the next day.

@@ashleyelll exactly that. Without even watching this video I can tell that the real reason these creators quit YT is that they already made A BANK. They would never quit YT if they weren't rich by now. Lol. And that is why Shelby is still making these videos and will make them because most of the youtubers do not have career besides posting and making YT videos.

For the past year, you have been talking about the changes in You Tube and you are worried about it. If you want to last on You Tube or as a successful creator on other platforms, you need to learn how to change with the times. Yes it takes up a lot of time, but so does any successful business. Learning how to balance a successful business and life is what it is all about. This was a refreshing video by you and it might have taken less time to create.

Been a silent viewer for over 10 years -- I admire your work ethic, energy, drive, ability to be real and vulnerable and stick true to yourself over the years. You're one of the very few creators (I can count on one hand) that I've watched for so long. Had the opportunity of working with you a few years ago (with Shuttr) for a brand I had at the time -- your platform was a big help at the time and we were able to get some nice photos that added a lot of brand value!

Same, but also, I hope she manages to step away if and when it stops being fun for her. Tom Scott and many of the others who quit or scaled back said just that, it had become too much work, too late hours, and the YT algorithm punishes creators who don't put out TV-quality 20+-minute videos at least once a week. It's a grueling schedule.

You make a lot of good points. But people are burning out in lots of different jobs because no one is really working 9-5. So many people have multiple jobs, side hustles or work long hours due to the higher cost of living. Also, people aren't satisfied working the same job for decades like they used to. Those days are over for most.

I agree 100%. I did the corporate life for thirty years, and as a woman in a mostly male industry (high tech sales starting in the late 80's), it was not only early days with long hours and weekends, commuting by bus because parking wasn't aloud at our buildings except for the management, requirements for clothing attire of dresses, nylons and heals. It was lower pay than the men, harassment, constantly being spoken down to, and not a lot of other financial options as asking my parents for help or staying with them while changing careers was not an option. Complete burn-out on a career that I despised, but was the only way to make the money I needed as a single woman to be able to buy a home etc. I finally quit and took lower paying jobs that were only 7am-4pm with no weekend work which was surprisingly better. I totally get it on the work burn out. It's better now that we have more options to choose from. I hope they find a 2nd chapter that they love and thrive.

I think it's more that the platforms are changing and it's just so much harder to make living out of it than before, especially when you had almost guaranteed eyeballs due to lockdowns.
Also the emergence of AI has really altered the game, because there is a colossal amount of content being made which is AI generated, and AI delivered (using AI voices) which puts other creators at a disadvantage.
Economic conditions are also tightening which means lower budgets and more difficulty connecting with markets.
Keeping the algorithm happy in these conditions is very difficult. I know of at least one person with half the subscribers to this channel, who is producing high quality output daily. But this isn't videos, it's high quality analysis of geopolitical, economic and social insights. This is very difficult to do and I worry the guy is going to get burnout but he is thriving.

lifestyle RUclipsrs are unsung heroes, with tips or inspo to make sensible people’s lives at least incrementally better - but with thousands of people per day, it adds up really fast. I've been self employed all my life (never in any kind of media business like you Shelby), and once I started to do more I figured the next natural step was to hire people, and do even more business. Got to where I had about 12 employees most of the time, high tech expensive people, and I hated it. Found myself taking on clients I knew would be a problem but needed them for the cash flow to support the overhead. Finally figured out that I was happiest when it was just me. You might make a little more money when business is great, but it sure sucks when your killing yourself to feed the beast when things slow down a little. Now it's just me, has been for years and I have a great life. If I can make a suggestion to someone starting out in business who is younger, which will probably be most everybody reading this at this point, find a niche in something, just one thing, and get so good at it that you're the only one people think of for that particular job. When you're so good that you "own" the skillset, no one can take it away from you. And you'll never want for work.

Shelby, this was so good, interesting and informative!
I've always appreciated when you have shown us the behind the scenes parts of making a youtube video. It's so easy for us viewers to just click and watch and not realize how much work actually goes into it!
Keep up the good work and yes, enjoy life outside of content creation! You are one of my faves and I don't want you to burn out.

I recently started following this creator on Instagram and the next day found a reddit forum talking about her house-both criticizing how she could afford it at her age and also doxxing her as people figured out where it was located (so many asked for the zillow listing). So creepy. Knowing there are forums both hating on you or stalking you is enough to keep me out of it.

I love this thoughtful commentary. I have wondered a lot about RUclips as a business, even though I have no desire to be so public personally due to my other work. A lot of you tubers make it seem like the greatest thing but it makes so much sense when you say that as you get older you value privacy, which is the main thing that prevents me from doing it. I also have a business and have recently learned about creating boundaries as it is easy to work all the time, but it would be worse with you tube if you are vlogging your whole life and never really turn off. Thank you for this honest take. :)

The PROBLEM with RUclipsrs -- "YOU" Are The Brand . . . Compare that to Hollywood. A show like "Entertainment Tonight" can change Hosts, and the show goes on. If your RUclips Channel name is "Shelby Church," it's kind of hard to change hosts.

Great video Shelby. I've learned that a lot of film makers, video creators, market videographers, youtubers and other forms of content creators in the industry are really facing burn out in the late 20's to mid 30's. Half of my friends whom are content creators are pursuing the dream full time but have a very small personal life; while the other half are exhausted but need the industry or quit the industry while trying to pursue a family and work-life balance.

I always LOVE how transparent and informative Shelby is. I defiantly see how people’s priorities have changed, or their passions too. We see you diving into real estate, but still keeping your channels. I still think RUclips is great, and I just hate how it is quantity over quality on the other platforms. Some of it doesn’t seem genuine, just money hungry.

Some of the other platforms have become all about the algorithm showing you what content to view. And I'm like "those are not the people I'm following!" There is some of that on RUclips, but I like that I can still go to the subscriptions area and catch up on specific channels I've decided to follow.

I think you're very wise to diversify your life and make time for fun, relationships and family outside of work. Definitely having a cut off time each day with no more work is vital to maintaining a good work/life balance. I think that type A personalities just dive in head first and do nothing else and yes, simply get burned out. A more laid back personality such as yourself can handle it.

I watched a couple of videos about this topic including rick beato´s video, and I liked yours the most, because you used different perspectives as of the why´s on things, and I also liked how open you were about the money side on things and going in to personal things or feelings rather than just compiling a few things and talking about those, and the way I see it, whenever you talked about this isolating thing, I believe it has more to do with your personality, and can be approach in a different way, you could do more content outside if that is something that you like, trying to talk more to people, or even if is not outside, you can do conference calls, or something that can make it more social, so the thing is not so much on the platform as it is on the format, on this specific case. Anyway I appreciate the info because I was kind of curious on seeing why people were launching videos about quitting because I am actually trying to make my channel to grow.

Very insightful and useful information. Your other video I watched when I first started RUclips a year ago was about how big RUclipsrs all hire editors. I still don't have an editor :) but it helped me understand what's going on at the highest levels of subscribership and helps keep me grounded as a smaller channel. I don't worry about things I'd otherwise be concerned about and just focus on doing what I can, when I can, creating the very best content I can. Thanks again.

A lot to think about. I, for one, highly value your opinion. I can relate though, back in the 00’s, I left a job, I was a custom jeweler. That work as well as running the shop, doing work for 6 other stores, keeping them all happy, I got to be a crispy kritter! It was back then I created the bad paintings. Key was, the painting was my survival mode. I could forget the demanding deadlines, the looming weddings, someone’s looming plans for a big engagement, anniversary, etc. Now, trying to get a channel up and going, I’m tapping the creative thing to fill the space my regular hum-drum job severely lacks. You’re the best Shelby! Please take time for yourself. There must be a way you can get “release” and still earn what you need. I would really hate to see you go away. 😢
