- Workwear. The stuff you see on the tired guy with mud on his boots at the gas station, the stuff that is designed to protect its wearer first and foremost. Two giants in this space are Carhartt and Dickies. People swear by each and typically stay pretty loyal to their brand of choice. Dickies people say that Carhartt is overpriced and they can get the same quality without the expensive name for less money. Carhartt people are even more loyal and tend to dress from head to toe in the brand, valuing the long history and solid track record.
So when looking at work jackets it's easy to see the value in Dickies. For what looks like a very similar jacket, the price is about $35 less - no small amount especially for an apprentice or someone early in their career. Have a look at the Carhartt Active Jac versus the Dickies Rigid Duck Hooded Jacket: they look pretty damn similar. Both are 100% duck canvas work jackets with hoods and rib knit hems. They look like the jackets you'll find on the backs of working people in colder climates. So which is the jacket for you?

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

@@HollywoodColt i mean no duh they still live with their mom and dads. You fr think an underaged kid going to be living on his own.
Here in New York Carhartt is on everybody, construction workers and fashionable kids alike, it's a ridiculously liked brand and I'm definitely with the hype.
yeah, but the WIP collection is so expensive.
Its high quality products from what I've read which is what you should look for. Im a Dickies guy tho
Carhartt shouldn't have went the fashion route. IMO
Rj Lewis money talks
I just bought one. Classic NY wear.
Dear carharrt, not everyone who wears an xl jacket, has a 48 inch waist, and toothpicks for arms.
You must be from outside New York
Lots of brands have a wacky notion of what an ideal fit is. Carhartt thinks you either have a gigantic gut or are wearing a dozen insulating layers underneath your jacket.
You might also add plans on putting a backpack under the coat too much extra fabric on the mid back.
The pant legs on carharrt are lot wider than other pants. It makes them look funny when you are wearing them.
Woah hello fellow brethren
Use to be a Dickies dude until I tried Carhartt. The little details matter! Carhartt is really worth the extra money in the long run. Plus they are friendly to us tall fat dudes. Great video boss!
I’m construction worker for 20 years and i had have both and for me carhartt is the best, those little details make a huge different, so carhartt is the one for me
The reality is that Dickies is always on sale somewhere and Carhartt rarely is. When money is tight, what are you going to do spend $40 for a jacket or $100?
Dickies is always better
Northwest Gardener - yes they are. Sizes actually fit. Carhartt has off sizing the XL isn’t like any other XL.
Not sure if you've heard of Sierra Trading Post, but you can find Carhartt cheaper there than anywhere, Dickies too. I literally just bought 2 pair of Dickies coveralls the other day for $35, and the actual price is over $90. Just go to Sierra dot com. Dickies is a lot cheaper on Sierra.
@@northwestgardener5076 Yup I've had a pair of pants since 2014 still good. I've seen a pair of carhart on pants rip on day one .
I’ve always loved carhartt because of my dad. Used to buy their stuff when I was younger and worker as a commercial building mover.
Now that I’m blue collar, I still go back to them because workwear has exploded in streetwear recently. Kinda cool to see them cater to other markets like their WIP lines.
Now this is what a review/comparison video should be like. Others please take note. Carl you are the Carhartt of reviewers...all the little things add up.
Dear Carhartt,
There is such thing as humans that are tall with a medium build. Please start making "medium tall" vests for these humans. Thank you.
I'm short and fat so I struggle with sleeve length more than you lol
Carhartt have tall options in sizing
Also Carhartt's clothes never fit short people - 5'7 here and it's pretty sparse
They don't offer much for a medium tall. Most of their clothing line starts at large tall. I fall in the same category, medium size but after a few washings, my shirts are belly shirts and large is awkwardly big to wear.
Idk about vests but they do have jackets in medium tall
Thanks. You just made me drive out to the Carhartt store in Huntington Station NY and drop $150 on a sweet jacket. Ask for Dan, he's cool as a fan.
Sounds like a kickass trip man!
@@CarlMurawski i still haven't even worn it yet lol
Diesel mechanic here. I’m Carhartt all the way. I do have one dickies Eisenhower jacket I wear occasionally, but not for work. My hooded Carhartt and my Carhartt Detroit are my go to coats. Great vid!
Much appreciated man! In my mechanic days we had those terrible Red Kap uniforms which would light on fire whenever we welded. Plus their jackets were just lightly quilted polyester and weren't good below 40 degrees, which made me get my first Carhartt jacket. Dickies is great and if you work in an especially dirty industry they might be a better buy, but if you keep your clothing for a few years I think Carhartt is better overall.
I've worn Dickies work pants for the past 13 years working as a machinist. My last pair that I purchased I noticed that they changed their fabric of ALL their pants and not for the better. It feels a lot thinner to the point where they almost fell like dress pants. I might be switching to a different brand soon.
Hello from Alaska, I use Dickies work slacks, Woolrich shirt over my long johns. Soft socks, insulated Carhart overalls and coat. Fur hat, arctic expo mittens, and insulated boots. Snow plowing, and many other outside duties here. Works well enough for comfort and protection.
The attention to detail/features or hidden features in the these videos is killer these are the best comparisons/reviews.
My great-grandfather works for Detroit Edison for 45 years and wore nothing but Dickies classic work pants for probably close to 80 years before he died he would even wear them to church on Sundays
Dickies work pants and Carhartt work jacket for me.
I’ve got a 15 year old Dickies brown duck jacket I just can’t kill but have got quite a few Carharrt items, including rip-stop pants. They’re both great brands. Went in between both of them and bought a Gibson canvas jacket that’s unbelievably warm.
Good catch on the knitted cuffs - they do wear but then again my Dickies jacket has gotten a bit worn down all over from constant use. Their canvas carpenter pants are good value too.
Great video!
I wear both brands but most recently switched exclusively to carhartt. I feel like I get more use long term with carhartts. The dickies breakdown to quick for me.
Same here. My carhartt jacket is my workhorse yearly jacket during cold winter months. I’ll get dickies jackets & will replace them every 2 or 3 years.
In 20+ years in the construction trades... I have owned 2 Carhartt work jackets and 2 pairs of bibs. I still own both jackets (one of which I bought as a 3rd yr apprentice 19 years ago, the other is over 10 years old) and a pair of bibs (19 years old). The only reason I bought a 2nd pair of bibs is because I caught the leg on fire cutting steel pipe as an idiot apprentice. I owned 1 Dickies coat that lasted less than 2 years. Carhartt Wins, Hands Down!!!
They last when your the guy who only brings the coffee for the men!
In Cheyenne Wyoming here. Was 100% Carhartt, then discovered Duluth. Quality is no comparison
Duluth all the way
i find duluth to be trash. i bought some of their wicking layers and they fell apart so fast.
@@DocFr33ze lol what ever
I'm a big fan of Duluth. But my fav is prob Filson or Ben Davis depending on price point.
@@Kaybee3104 never heard of them. Need to look them up
@@Jammerjim You should. My Filson CCF jacket is my favorite jacket in my collection. It's spendy tho. Ben Davis is basically another dickies.
My daddy was a coal miner, hardest working s.o.b. I’ve ever seen in my life and he was a Dickies guy so when I started working in my current factory job that’s what I chose but I won’t lie you make carhartt sound pretty nice I’m gonna try one out
hows the Carhartt
I really dig how much effort you put into your videos man and I love work wear so Thats a follow for damn sure
Thanks a lot man! I appreciate that!
Dickies hands down for the warehouse work I do now,
Carhartt for the outdoor farm work I did growing up when I need the insulation to pull thru
Dickies jackets are sold in walmart. Which means your lucky to get 1-2yrs out of them depending on your line of work. I've worn carhartt for 25yrs & I'm only on my 3rd jacket. Outdoor construction & driving a truck. Carhartt 100%
Walmart's Dickies jacket's are purchase by bulk .... Dickies Originally brand only by Walmart ... price point $$ you know the story of economic's ... quality's it's ok too .... But if you ever have a chance to visit any of the Dickies Corporate Stores or web side ... you will absolutely be convinced how better they are ... Dickies are own know by Carhartt Corp. Both are great !!!
Walmart doesn't sell authentic dickies (aside from dickies 874 pant) They sell a brand called "genuine dickies" and the products look very similar but the quality isn't the same.
I use carhartt during cold months & dickies during fall. Both are great jackets & brands
This review so damn good. I have always been a fan of Carh.but never noticed all the features.
Carhartt 24/7 for any occasion 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 NYC
great video Carl.. I find it funny that the new Hipster "artist" look is : Carhartt beanie, vintage 90s tee and baggy Carhartt pants rolled up with Vans.. One thing for sure ,Carhartt has definitely diversified their consumer base.
not a hipster thing. I bought trendy carhartt items in a more fashionable store in the late 90's. I was a teen into drum & bass going to raves wearing those.. now I work using the same type of clothes...It's just that now they have the WIP line which so fucking expensive and they sell at streetwear stores. Same thing with Dickies. All the indy kids as well as hiphop heads used to wear those in the 90's. Hipsters never discovered shit.
also popular with skaters
I remember when Snoop Dogg first started rapping in the early 90s late 80s early 90s he had a Carhartt jacket on and I had to get one
if you bought a carhartt because an idiot rapper wore one, neither one of you should wear carhartt. they're WORK CLOTHES!
@@pokeysdad17 i'll make any bet that the rapper you just called an idiot has a lot more money than you and has probably never had to work as hard as you a day in his life.

Carhartt for jackets, Dickies for pants.
DUDE I am so glad you mentioned at the beginning that its not Americana crap Workwear! Thats most of the videos on YT when looking for workwear. Its all bout fashion and crap. I just want real reviews about crap Im going to need to help perform better
Exactly!!
Never scrimped on my tools or work clothes, even if I ate pbj for a few days.....Carhartt and Milwaukee. Little more for both, but still using some of each 35 years after purchase
I like Carhartt but I've always worn a regular non hooded Dickies work jacket and will continue. The sleves being slightly shorter make it easier to work on equipment/vehicles without the cuffs getting filthy.
Carhartt has off sizing. Can’t ever find any to fit right.
I like the Dickie's I get at Walmart and then I get the George brand as well . Well priced . The George Dickie style is the best for the dollar .
Yes price is good and they fit better.
The Carhartt I bought in 2010 is not the same as the Carhartt I bought in 2016
Preach!
Cheaper materials due to cost.
Their distributors have cheapen the material carhartt receives.
Cost and profit.
I started wearing carhartt work wear in the early 80's and the quality has really gone down and the prices have gone up! Sam Adler
I bought a pair of dickies carpenter pants about 2 years ago. I had them for about 4 months until I went camping and the zipper broke immediately when I started doing heavy work. I then bought a pair of carhartt carpenter pants, and after almost 2 years they have never let me down. I think dickies is good, but carhartt really cares about their products
I still have my Dickies from 2006 man, they are still good😂
The Carhartt Full Swing active armstrong active jacket is the best jacket I've had yet.
I've had a Dickies coat years ago now and I didn't like it since the day I got it. I went from a old carhartt to said dickies and just never was impressed. I gave it to my brother inlaw and I got myself a new carhartt and my appreciation of carhartt has grown alot. Every year when it gets colder out you will find nothing but carhartt because they are built to last longer.
I can definitely see a difference in the jackets. And around here Carhartt is what most guys wear. I'm a fan of the Dickies cotton duck carpenter pants over the similar Carhartt. Nothing wrong with the Carhartt's just don't fit me as well. There is a difference between the black tag Dickies made in Mexico or Honduras vs the red tag ones at Walmart. Definitely better off going to the local farm store and getting the black tag model for a couple dollars more.
I wear dickies trousers and carhartt tops. Both are great quality. I think these videos really help people decide which will suit them better for there use. I use them as everyday use as they are affordable and long lasting. Great for everyday use and work purposes.
I've had my Carhartt for probably 6 years and it was finally time to upgrade. I actually found a Dickies work jacket that I really liked, and it was half the cost! We'll see if it lasts like my other one but it's pretty damn comfortable.
ive mostly always used dickies uniforms and have always loved the Eisenhower jacket, last yr i bought a dickies rigid duck blanket lined jacket that looks very similar to my older Detroit jacket, paid under $40 for it and honestly if it wasn't for the logo tags, i wouldn't be able to tell them apart even the blanket lining has the same feel and look, so that was a surprise to me. But i do love my carhartt active jackets, got one in thermal, one in quilted nylon and one in sherpa lining, also have my chore coat which looks great on the weekends, my double front work pants are still solid as hell too. i grew up with dickies and still every day use it as part of my uniform, but it doesn't compare to the quality of them U.S made carhartts!
The only people I knew that wore Dickies were nurses ,janitors that work in hospitals and boiler room engineers...
Hahaha I know exactly what you're talking about: the brown pants and work shirt combo.
got this jacket in the dark brown color. it really is amazing how many features this has for how simple this jacket really is j130 ftw!
I'll keep buying carhartt and let the other guys save a few bucks. Great review.
over the years ( i'm 69) I've had quite a few
carhartt jackets and bibs two of my daily jackets are close to 20 years old, not the best looking but still usable no other brand for me
I'm a white collar worker but I still like tough, quality clothing. Carhartt is definitely worth the extra money.
This was a very well done video. You focused on the product and gave us excellent visual clarity in your analysis. This type of presentation is so useful!
Please, more like this.
Big thumbs up! 👍
Labour costs come into it as well. I have both Carhartt and Dickies canvas coats and jackets. Instead of studs on the waist band and cuffs, the Dickies have the big heavy duty buttons( like on jean waistband) These are just the same style.
Working outside and by the sea,I really needed a warm workwear jacket.First i bought Dickies Portland which is poly flannel exterior and poly padded quilt inside for 35 usd.I was amazed how warm this thing was in temperatures between 40 and 50F.But I wanted an upgrade since it started showing some tear and wear so i ended up buying Carhartt Traditional Sandstone jacket with arctic quilt lining for 140 usd.Fit was perfect so is the looks.But..it's not as warm as the flannel dickies one which really disappointed me.I probably blame the sandstone duck cotton exterior which even though is much more tough against abrasion, doesn't seem to provide enough insulation against constant blowing cold sea breeze.I know that they 're not comparable not even close.Carhartt is a proper-proper jacket with excellent details and stitching and Portland Dickies is a flannel shirt-jacket.But because of the "field testing"results i ended up wearing the carhartt on all other occasions but not at work.. Your videos are great and a very useful guide for all who work or do stuff outdoors
Hey, I just wanted to say this video was very well thought out. I have been in the refrigation traid 20+ years. I can definitely say when you are in a sub-zero deep freezer for fast food and grocery cold storage, carhartt overalls and jackets are amazing.
I've have my dickies jacket for 33 years still good as new
My "go to" work jacket is the Carhartt, blanket lined, "Detroit" model.
For pants it's Ben Davis all the way.
I haven't worn Ben Davis since 1995 lol
Carharrt all the way. The double knee pants wore out above the double knee area and I told them they should extend it up to the coin pocket. They didn't listen. I do love the jackets, coats, blue jeans and especially the work shorts in summer. All in all a good product!
A bit unfair comparison , Theres a Dickies "Jefferson" Duck jacket thats 100% comparable to the Carhartt jacket your reviewing , It has triple stitching - reinforced elbows and also has the same sleeve design with chest pockets too .
13 years ago I got the Dickie jacket from Walmart when I was 17/18. It was super cheap and just needed a winter jacket for work as a general labour. I've since retired the jacket to an outdoor home work jacket since I have to wear FR. Ive had the jacket for for almost 13 years and it is finally starting to wear out. Their are a few small small holes in the shoulder and the cuffs are starting to fray. Back then the quality was much higher and had a pen pocket and better stitching etc. When i rebuy a new work jacket I'll be getting a Carhartt.
This is an excellent demonstration of why sometimes expensive is better value , all the tiny bits no one would notice make a massive difference,
Snickers is Europe's biggest workwear brand and its exactly the same , expensive until you try the cheaper stuff and then you notice the care that has gone into the research .
I love the over cuffs on my Carhartt hiviz coat. It makes a good wind seal when your wearing gloves.
I love the cuffs on my carhartt because they never get in the way while still keeping my jacket sleeves long for warmth.
You’re forgetting the other top dog wrangler they make some awesome stuff for flame retardant for the electrical guys
Great point! I mostly see Tindale FR out here.
Carhartt is the brand especially for those harsh outside working conditions. The coveralls, insulated bibs, and Yukon jackets keep you toasty. Had a dickies coverall the zipper broke useless in winter
Had a pack of Dickies crew work socks in my hand today. Saw that they were made in China and put them back.
I have socks from Thorlos and Darn Tough that are American made. They are great socks but you're definitely going to pay.
I don’t know if you have an other Dickies items but I absolutely love the comparisons. Begin able to see all the extra tiny details is the thing I love about Carhartt
I wear both for work !! I use dickies for their shorts and pants , and Carhattt for jackets , hoodies , hats , and shirts . like I said that's a great combination for me as I do work in my gear .
Most definitely, and there's something kinda weird about wearing the same brand head to toe. I like the Dickies work polos and they've lasted me years.
That is some great information, I have a little of both brands but this is really helpful in looking at the fine points for something often worn.
Nothing beats Carhartt!! …but Dickies does have the matching shirt and pants sets 🤷🏾♂️
Alpha Industries M 65 jacket ,also good workjacket !!
Carhartt is extremly expensive here in Germany. I like that the stuff are very durable and long living but really? They charge prices here like premium fashion brands
Thats because you Shop Carhartt WIP, the normal carhatt you can Order and import in the Internet is a Lot cheaper. Dickies isnt even that expensive, a Jacket is 60€
@@janness4708 never knew that there was a difference 😅 thanks for the advice!
I'm late to the dance here but, I'm partial to the Carhartt brand of outer wear items. I like the triple stitching & the brown duc material holds up to conditions I'm around.
I've worn Dickie my whole life, I bought carhartt for the first time just recently. The differences between the two were obvious to me from the start. And I can tell you without hesitation that carhartt is definitely a better product. And well worth the extra money. I'll never go back to Dickie. Dickie used to make a good product, but it seems that over the years the quality has diminished. I guess that's what happens when you start producing your products in China.
Because they make them in china?
Or because the material is different and not as great?
@@mr.cifuentes1779 -Both!! I will pay for something that lasts. I used to work in machine shops. And Dickies could hold up fairly well. Wore short sleeves for safety. A vest in colder weather. Now I have been doing operating/stationary engineer for the past 20 years. And I appreciate being allowed to wear a jacket while working. And the Carhartt is much nicer than the job issued Dickies jackets.
Always thought Carhartt was outdoor construction, farming, heavy equipment. Dickies was mechanic’s indoors 🤷♂️
I've have the dickies hooded shirt jacket for a few year. Used in every season when cold enough. The jacket may be a little heavy but it is duck canvas with insulated inside. Paid about 70 for it. Would recommend for others to pick one up. Extremely warm and durable
Glad to see the updates on the Carhartt. I think this is the jacket I had while working on the Rail Road. I worked out of Toronto where it is cold and very damp. The coat was warm. The exposed cuffs did wear badly around the wrists and a bit around the waist. The thing I hated was the waist cuff. Any big movements, like climbing ladders on rail cars had it climb up your torso, leaving you exposed. I currently have a Carhartt Full Swing Relaxed Fit Insulated Coat. I love it. Unfortunately, the YKK zipper has a crooked tooth at the very bottom and it gives me problems. Have to see about a replacement zipper. BTW, square zipper on this one.
I've had few jackets from both brands. I typically like Carhartt more once they're broken in, but every once in a while I see the Dickies Hooded Quilted Jacket for $40-50 and pick one up. They're also great and I don't mind ruining them as much as a $120 Carhartt.
The j130 is one of my favorite carhartt coat's. The new additions to this coat have made me were this on and off the job site . I also own the full swing Armstrong active coat and there are nice touches to that coat but i don't think it is warmer than J130 especially for the cost difference. I would love to see the full swing shoulders on the J130 with that and the elbow room it would be absolutely a winner but still a great coat with new updates. Truly not a dickies fan and I'm not saying there clothing is bad but there is always that little step above that makes carhartt the better option. Great video and keep them coming.
I look forward to winter so i can wear my carhartt, favorite jacket. The only jacket I think comes close is Berne, I like there's as well. I got one off the tool truck as promo and wore it as a work jacket and the only thing that killed was a broke zipper
Love carhartt as a brand i can wear the jacket for work in 30° refrigeration and I can throw that same jacket on to go out in as a style piece definitely versatile every day wear
Being made in Mexico (our neighbors) vs outside of North America is more than enough of a difference to justify the price difference.
If it's not made in the USA, being made in North America is the next best option.
i've been a loyal Dickie's customer for over 13 years, but i'm switching to Carhartt in the future & probably not gonna go back. i probably owned 30+ Dickie's garments in the past 13 years, including pants, shirts, outerwear. i must say, they are not really comfortable, but because they are very durable & care-free & very cheap, i still chose Dickie's.
but in recent years, i witnessed the gradual deterioration in their quality. the final strew that broke my loyalty is the extremely poor stitching on their hook & loop patches. last year i bought a pair of shorts, the hook & loop patch on the shorts' thigh pocket was torn off within 2 weeks of use. this year, i bought the Dickie's Pro Cordura bomber jacket & the inner pocket's hook & loop patch was torn off after 2 USES. FUCKING. 2. USES. on a Dickie's "Pro" garment. you call this durable workwear? this is just absurd.
Carhartt is like 15-25% pricier in my country than the US, but the hell with it. next time i'm buying new workwear, it's gonna be a Carhartt!!!!!
I like my Dickies "Bus Driver" jacket , Im a carpenter and the short jacket let's me get into my pouch better than a long one.
Which one is the bis driver jacket?
@@multitaskgamerpro6980 .... That's what I call it anyway, I think they call it Eisenhower, blue nylon, zipper only, short lightweight jacket, im in Texas, we never see snow or really cold weather here
No , I was wrong, Dickies calls it the Lined Team jacket
My beef with Carhartt is that my Carhartt baseball cap’s Velcro strap sticks to their hood’s insulated liner when I get into my truck and try to lower the hood. A real PITA .
I found that Carhartt is great in the construction industry, where if you work with harsh chemical Dickies hold up better to corrosives and oxidizes like acid and chlorine dickies are better in the automotive industry as well they don't stain and don't absorb water as much as carhartt, it depends on the job on which one would work best
I wear nothing in the winter but Carhartt
Ben Davis. The brand with the ape in the logo. Been a staple out here in the west coast. Has roots in the legendary Levi’s brand and also a staple in the streetwear genre along with Carhartt and Dickies. They’re not as prominent as the latter, but still a significant contributor in quality to the workwear aesthetic as the rest. They even have an exclusive Japanese line for us fashionistas. BEN DAVIS!

Dickies for apprentice, carhartt for foreman.
carhartt vs snickers would be better ( i love both of em ! )
Great job on this.
Wow! Really enjoyed this detailed video.
I have slowly but successfully converted my entire wardrobe to Duluth Trading Co. I'm a 5'11 150lb. build so I comfortably wear a medium but the lengths are on the short side so I used to buy large which I would swim in. Duluth offers medium tall in almost everything they offer which is important to me. That being said, I purchased the DTC Superior Fire Hose Hooded Jacket last year and It is worth every penny paid ($179.99). I'm a fabrication painter and wear quite a bit of equipment for 12-16 hours so comfort is a priority. Anyone who has worn the Duluthflex fire hose canvas pants knows how comfortable and tough they are. The jacket is no different.
I am a woman that works in the comics industry I have no need for workwear yet here I am watching a video comparing two jackets that I will never wear and being very entertained ???
Well I'm happy that you are!
Carhartt is good for the winter that's for shur but don't matter just get the job done
Always carhartt take about 5 yr just to break in I have a carhartt coat that's over 20 yrs old and still wear it i don't see any other brand lasting that long
My Carhartt was made in India. Thank you, come again.
The walls is the real competition as far as the jacket goes
That was a great comparison, thank you!
I love both but carhartt double knee pants are the toughest out there
Good video, I usually stick with Dickies, but this Carhartt Jacket is definitely more premium
I got my Carhartt active jac stuck on a nail when I was falling and let me tell you the FABRIC ITSELF ripped before THE SEAM😂 IT WAS HILARIOUS like big ol hole that stopped directly at the seam
