i understand this is fairly old as far as maya goes (with it constantly changing) but i was wondering if there was some was to get the lightsabers "trail" like effect when its moved e.g the faster its moved the longer the trail?
Hi!!! Great Tutorials!!! I want to ask you something... I just installed V-Ray, but I notice that you are using mental Ray... this last one is better for rendering?? What do you think?? What do you recommend?? And sorry about my English but I am Argentinian :)
Payton Pellitteri Hi Payton, the standard color for Phong E is shiny grey ( silver ) Did you change the color of your Phong material in the attribute editor to green ?
+ccolinryann You need to activate mental Ray in the plugin manager. Here are instructions mhtutorialsruclips.net/user/201507/04/q-i-cant-find-mental-ray-in-autodesk-maya/
+Ngoc Quang Nguyen Doan What version of Maya are you using and what are your system resources ? ( CPU, RAM, VIDEO ) Look at your render settings to see if you can set the settings a bit lighter if you know what I mean
+Ngoc Quang Nguyen Doan Hi Ngoc, When using Maya 2014 you need : - A minimum of 4GB ram ( 8 GB is better ) - A 64 bit AMD or Intel core CPU - A minimum of 2GB free harddisk space A slow system will freeze when forced to do heavy calculations like rendering Mike
looks like a good way to also make laser beams in general.
klanders988 Correct
Mike Hermes awesome
You can also combine glow (without autoexposure off) and incandescence to give a similar effect
+Lord Vader Cool
You should make how make a light saber with Arnold
Super cool, thanks!

I'm using Maya 2013. In Render Settings, how do I change the quality?
you can just use a surface shader
+DullBoe you're talking about just the render view, right?
i dont understand mike how to put that green focus to the light did you skipped it ??
Any way to make that glow emit light? I mean, for reflexions, or illuminating other near objects? Thanks
Yes and it does
Hmmm.. i may have to change any settings, as it is not working for me on maya 2016... thanks anyway for the answer!
Ok, i've found out that reflections are only working with mia materials, at least for me...
Hey Mike, quick question;
No matter what color I set my Phong-E to, it renders silver :c Any ideas?
Payton Pellitteri Hi Payton, the standard color for Phong E is shiny grey ( silver ) Did you change the color of your Phong material in the attribute editor to green ?
If I remember correctly this effect can only be rendered in Maya software
Mike Hermes I just tried it in that, and this is the result I have now.

Payton Pellitteri I really don't get what went wrong. Seems you have done everything correctly. Must be some sort of installation or hardware error
can we genrate fire like fire is coming from laser light////?????....thanks...
Yes, animate the emmissive light being on ( or off ) for 12 frames at a time ( so half a seconds ) and hide the source of the light
ok thanks M.HERMS...
Can I export this to be used in a game engine? Like unity for example.
Yes
and just like that Maya is winning me over from blender V_V
The glow will not come with the export, but you can use emission in Unity to have the glow.
So did maya 2016 take out the metalic effect? I can not find it.
+ccolinryann You mean the MIA_Material_X Chrome preset ?
+Mike Hermes yes. Could it be i do not have it because i have the student one?
+ccolinryann No
+Mike Hermes so what is the problem?
+ccolinryann You need to activate mental Ray in the plugin manager. Here are instructions mhtutorialsruclips.net/user/201507/04/q-i-cant-find-mental-ray-in-autodesk-maya/
how to export that as an object including the glowing part
The glow is material dependant and will only work with the same renderer. The other option would be to bake it
Why does the blade of the saber has a shadow?
Because I forgot to activate "do not cast shadow" in the attribute editor
my maya keep crashing whenever i try to render, pls help. wasted too many work

+RemChu This is the MIA-Material_X, a part of the mental Ray rendering option. You need to install mental Ray to use the material
