What l meant by my statement l guess, is l've seen elderly people (more than one) give out too much information over the phone to strangers. They are not necessarily suave in the slick ways of those who want to steal or hurt them. I had an older family friend that was having a man call her all the way from lndia, l think, that was wanting her bank account number for some scheme that had to do with gas rewards or something like that, and that he needed her help and it would be good for her also. One day l was there and heard the conversation so l had her give me the phone, l told him to stop calling her and bothering her. He had the nerve to tell me why did l care what she was doing. Another time l came to the house and she was waiting for some stranger to come over to the house, that she had talked to over the phone. But very, very, sadly a couple years later she wasn't heard from for a day or so and was found murdered and they later found out that the murderer was a drug addict who had broke into her home to steal money. And l know she never really kept cash at the house but he didn't l don't guess. And she really didn't have anything of value there either. He had murdered her during the night with a claw hammer, she was fiesty and fought back as he was murdering her so they found his dna under her nails.

At 87, this lady should be using a service like ACCESS for transportation for seniors. I bet this thief had been watching this senior from the time she drove into the parking lot. Criminals are always looking for someone to target. Once, when I was home from college for Christmas vacation, my parents told me they had tried unsuccessfully to get my grandmother to direct deposit her social security check. My grandmother preferred to get her check at the beginning of the month, go downtown to the bank and then pay bills at different department stores with cash. I accompanied her on the bus while I was home. We got off but not together because my grandmother exited the front door and I exited the back door of the bus. A young man on the bus also got off and followed my grandmother about two blocks while I purposely lagged behind. Just as she started toward the bank, I noticed he did not want to go inside but seemed to linger by the door. When I called out "grandma” just as she was opening the bank’s door, he turned around stunned and quickly fled. He was, no doubt, planning to follow my grandmother and try to rob her after she came out of the bank. But my grandmother did not even notice him. After I told my grandmother what happened, she agreed to use direct deposit and write checks to pay her bills.

The biggest majority of elderly now are not as naive as the prior generation was. This elderly generation are mainly the baby boomer generation & KNOW EXACTLY how evil this world is & KNOW they can't trust anybody. They're the generation that's seen every serial killer from Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, The Nightstalker, The Son Of Sam, Bundy, Dahmer, & then some. They've witnessed the Wonderland murders, child abductions like Adam Walsh etc. They are more than aware of how evil society is. They don't come from the Great Depression or World War I generations. The BEST advice is to drill into your elderly family member's heads to TRUST NO ONE. We constantly had to reiterate that to my Mom who lived to be 92 and a half, and it was hard for her to take that posture but after being "slightly" taken, not like this poor woman but she was being set up a few times and taken once, she got the message. Once a person reaches a certain age and scumbags know they are living alone, be very wary and keep a close eye on them and most importantly, keep an eye on their finances. Better yet, have them put YOUR name on all accounts as well so no worthless scum thief can steal from them.

The apartment management did a very wise thing by not releasing anything to the media. The police are the ONLY ones they should be releasing that info to bcuz this is a case that is to be under investigation. It's up to the police dept. to release any information pertaining to the case. God forbid they release something that could jeopardize the investigation &/or prosecution. Not to mention there could be other ppl in that video that may not want the public knowing they live there. What if someone were to be in a witness protection program & some yutz from their apartment complex they live in just blows their cover by having their face plastered all over the tv, internet, & the entire world? All bcuz the media wants the video! Yeah, right.

We don't have to teach our elderly that! They are a generation who have seen the birth of serial killers, child abductors & murderers, school shootings, & all the other deplorable things that have occurred over the past 75yrs! Ppl just need to be more aware of their elderly loved ones demonstrating actions of Dementia &/or Alzheimer's & THAT would help eliminate 90% of this type of thing. The other 10% of elderly being ripped off more or less comes from telemarketing scams.

We as daughters and also sons need to let our parents know we're there for everything including ranch to the doctor and you need to go in there and listen to what the doctor says because chances are they're going to forget. I know some are better than others but 87 is getting up there no matter how independent they want to be just tell them you love them and you want to go with them! If you don't make the time you live with a consequences.
