2014 Vauxhall Astra J Part 1 - engine oil and filter change

  • This is my partner's son's car. It had a Code 82 which meant it needed the engine oil changing so I thought I'd make a video of it. I'd already cleared the code before I shot this video. Even though the car is only 2 years old, changing the engine oil and oil filter is still the same. The car is still under warranty so I've had to use genuine parts from a Vauxhall dealer. Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this video.
    #Vauxhall #Astra #Car
    PLEASE NOTE: I'm just a DIY mechanic. I try to do things correctly but sometimes I have to manage with what I have at the time. Please treat this video as a "how-I-did-it" rather than a "how-to".
    EDIT: I've had lots of comments about me being messy and spilling oil. I try to avoid this but it still sometimes happens. You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs.
    Here's the re-edited version:

    I just thought I'd let you know that I'm going to redo this video from scratch as I still have the original footage. I've had a few comments about the music being a distraction which is a valid point. Once it has been uploaded. I'll post the link. I'll be keeping this video up as well.

    Vauxhall has changed the oil specification for their 1.4 Turbo engines.
    Spec used to be 5w30 C3 Dexos 2 but there was a bulletin a couple of years back changing this to 5w30 Dexos 1.
    Try buying it though. Vauxhall will not sell you any over the counter and most garages will just bung anything in.
    Best get hold of Morris Multivis ADT DV 5w30 Dexos 1 via Auto Vaux online.

    It isn't a T40, it's a T45. Trust me, don't learn the hard way and cut corners. You'll end up stripping the hole over time.
    And then sell it to people like me who have to deal with it 😂
    I bought a brand new sump plug for the astra and a T45 fits perfectly.

    I've just serviced this car so I'll be putting up a video. The engine code is A14XER.

  • @getonitnow
    @getonitnow 4 года назад

    Also best to unplug something (coil pack) so engine doesn't fire/run so it just turns engine over on starter only, as the oil filter is still dry after the change. That's best way to get the oil round filter and engine again before really running it

    • @CroIntr00X
      @CroIntr00X 4 года назад +3

      yea right and you end up with tons of errors on the dash, so trip to the computer guy to erase it...not smart at least on this Astra....usually there some oil left in the engine anyways between bearings and such, so it wont hurt, you can match this "damage" same as one cold winter morning start

      F1 teams only put the bare minimum of oil in their engines (although they do rebuild them more than we would !) Your dip stick shows the min & max marks so any level above minimum is safe for your engine, unless you're planning a track day

      engine at operating temperature, leave 15 min off then check (that's what manual says), but when you changing oil you can't do this way, you must pour exact amount or close, then after one drive check for proper level, safe side better to pour less so you can ad a tap more if needed than too much

    • @bakerloobadboy
      @bakerloobadboy 2 года назад

      It's a T40 that has a built in oil seal. Probably best to have one as a spare incase you take it off and discover the seal is compromised

  • @ianhand5006
    @ianhand5006 5 лет назад +1

    I’d let the hot oil drain for an hour with the filter removed. You should top up the oil then run the engine for a few seconds as the filter will then fill up and the oil level will drop slightly. Always change the air filter at the same time as the 40,000 miles interval, for the air filter change, is far too long.

    • @Parknest
      @Parknest  5 лет назад

      This wasn't my car and has since been sold. I change the air filter as part of the annual service with my cars. Best to do it before the MoT so it gets through the emissions part of the test. It has always worked for me.

      Gearbox oil should be changed every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or 5 years which ever comes first. Or if you have a preferred time to do it, follow that.
      Capacity of the gearbox is 2. 4 litres, but bear in mind that about 200ml is kept behind in the gearbox. Generally people tend to slightly overfill by about 200ml to ensure that the 5th and 6th bearing get adequate lubrication. Also try to use an oil that is Zinc free because Zinc, over time, absorbs water from the atmosphere
