“Ultralight gear does not last”… but these items did!

  • These are the gear items I've used on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Long Trail, Highline Trail, and so much more. Truth be told, very few items get swapped out due to their wear, but more due to changed wants or needs on the trail. For example, I still have my hammock setup from the AT, but this setup wouldn't work on the PCT, so I swapped to a ground shelter instead. There are items that have also gone 3000+ miles that have been excluded from this list, but didn't feel the need to mention them for one reason or another. What gear do you have that's lasted longest?

    For some reason some people love to hate on UL gear. I am in my 60s and going UL has enabled me to continue doing something I love deeply, backpacking. I did the Long Trail this year and having such a light pack really helps this older set of knees. Thanks for the review of the Montbell raincoat, it’s on my list of gear to get. I do treat my gear fairly gently but then again I have always been easy on my gear. Take care.

      Totally agree! Same here, well not because of age but because of former injuries.

    Great informative video. I loved my Versalite jacket on the PCT. For anyone out there that’s wondering, the Versalite rain jacket layers perfectly over the Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex jacket. I have a medium in each and it’s perfect.

    Clean, simple, and to the point. I appreciated the second camera angle. Solid vid, very informative

    Good to see that the Tachyon held up! Considering that same fabric in windbreaker form.

      I’ve used the windbreaker and it works great. Couldn’t justify a windbreaker in my layering system, so I ended up selling it. I regret it some days

    Good to hear about the Versalite. Thinking about buying one this year.

    The Senchi is awesome, but even after sizing up, mine is about 2 inches too short and wears more like a crop top with a pack on. lol

    500 miles on my Altra Timp 1.5. They look new other than dirt on them.

      It’s wild to me when I see people with 200-300 miles on a shoe and they look destroyed. Trail runners start to flatten out by around 500, but your legs and feet are strong by then so my budget mind says to keep going. Glad you have a shoe that works for ya

    How's the stink on the Montbell leggings? I was looking at the merino wool version @ 4.5oz, but the Zeo are cheaper/lighter.

    When are you thinking about doing the CDT? I really love the quilt. Interesting that you have the whole line up of all the weights. LOL the crotch smell test cracked me up!!

      Next year would be ideal for me, but we shall see!
      Yeah, I’ve yet to find a better quilt than Katabatic to date, it’s just built right.
      Those underwear are great! Have a fresh pair saved for my hike next month

    Curious that you have 4 Katabatic Quilts with different temperature ratings. How do you use them exactly in what temperatures/conditions? Seems like a very expensive way to regulate temperatures.
    Do you have an opinion on Hyper Dry Down vs normal?
    Maybe that's worth a Video!

    • @MeowHikes
      @MeowHikes  3 года назад +1

      It is! But I do a lot of hiking and have a girlfriend who also goes with me now, and she runs colder than I. When it’s cold, I use 22 she uses 15, then down the line with 30/22 and then 40/30. The quilt that gets the most use is the 30. If you wanted the most range of use, get a 30 and a synthetic wider 50. You have 30, 50, then stack the synthetic on top for winter. Or 22/40.
      I always get hyper dry just based off of personal research and the fact I usually use a tarp

    Yo, looking to get the versalite, curious about sizing, I think we are about the same size, I'm 5,6 and 130ish. You think the small is right for me, hows the fit when you put it on over a puffy?

    • @MeowHikes
      @MeowHikes  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah the small I’ve had a melly and puffy underneath it, while a touch snug, it worked great. I’d go small, we’re practically the exact same size
