I watched her from the 4th row sing that song. By the end pretty much everybody I could see was in tears. There was a long moment of silence and then a roar. That song clearly means a lot to many of us, but it means different things. No matter. Johnny Cash and Sheryl Crow do the impossible and unite us. Even for a minute.
For me and my dad, we fought different wars, but our memories made us mild for those who fought against and with us, but furious about them who made us kill.. For what? Their games I think. So be it, It's our redemption day..
Saw this live sept 20, she did this at the rascal flatts concert in toronto, hadnt heard it before then, and the minute she explained the story of the back ground, she got teary and choked up.. you just knew it was gonna be a great song. but when johnny cash started to sing, i got duck bumps, and it was like every hair on my body became electrified.. i understood her choked emotions.. at the end of the song the crowd went nuts , we were standing in ovation for a song that hits so close to home, in this crazy time of ISIS, holy wars, and corruption...
+Janice Pinch ...A sad missed opportunity in time that did not allow John and Sheryl to actually do this song together when he was still with us. A lot of folks actually think this was a JC tune, me included until I did the research. :)
I just came to this song with Sheryl Crow's Treads album, which has to be the frontrunner for a Grammy in its category. Fantastic song written by Sheryl, performed with weight by the legend Johnny Cash, who clearly believed the song meant something to him, and the artful combination of the two with a new piano and orchestral arrangement, unforgettable. This will receive many plays, an instant classic.
I bought the CD this song came on new while deployed somewhere for the Air Force and this has always been my favorite song on it. I just acquired the Johnny Cash American series and have been listening to them a bit at a time. I saw that this was on American V and listened to it first. Now Johnny was in poor health when recording these last tracks, but it gives a haunting depth and character to those songs. He and Rick Rubens really made great choices for the compositions. I had no Idea that Sheryl had done this collaboration with his voice. It was really moving. I've always liked her and her music. I'm glad she did this, it's a pretty timeless song.
I had no clue he was still alive when it was recorded as his health was failing. These days with technology, u are never sure when singers have somehow added a person who has passed away. Cool that he DID record this!!!!! Miss him, he's where he should, in heaven where there are no more tears, hatred, abuse by men or a women in power!!!!!
Such a relevant song today, end of 2024 when (almost) everyone on TV, on radio, in papers keep telling us that this current war is worth it... In France where I live it's now a sin to dare to speak about peace, especially among aging former "peace and love" people...
"come leaders ye men of great..... let us hear you pontificate ...... and we're not listening ...." love this! Thank you very much for this wonderful video! xx
OMG gives me loving & sadness at the same time . I love this live - I played it to my Mum ( the kindness most giving person ) Mary Bancks rest in peace . Missy Higgins thank you for your music , I loved playing your song with my Mum .
Most certainly a powerful song with Sheryl Crow and Johnny Cash singing that has great meaning to it with all the faith of music,we all must keep the faith🙏🇺🇸
Some of us know”freedom oh freedom, we’ll that’s just some people talking your prison is walking through thus world all a alone...” the video crossing over with Sheryl Crow and The one and only “Mr. Johnny Cash” . That’s what June Carter would say. Important lyrics. A song of conscience. I love.♥️✌️🧚🏻♂️🦋

I've wept for those who suffer long But how I weep for those who've gone Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong But keep on killing It's in the soul to feel such things But weak to watch without speaking Oh what mercy sadness brings If God be willing There is a train that's heading straight To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate And on the way, child and man And woman wait, watch and wait For redemption day Fire rages in the streets And swallows everything it meets It's just an image often seen On television Come leaders, come you men of great Let us hear you pontificate Your many virtues laid to waste And we aren't listening What do you have for us today Throw us a bone but save the plate On why we waited til so late Was there no oil to excavate No riches in trade for the fate Of every person who died in hate Throw us a bone, you men of great There is a train that's heading straight To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate And on the way, child and man And woman wait, watch and wait For redemption day It's buried in the countryside It's exploding in the shells at night It's everywhere a baby cries Freedom
Powerful! What a blend of spirit! Johnny Cash and Cheryl Crow. I do not like the word Chameleon. That word does not fit. Better expression is kindred spirits, Cash and Crow, and why this tribute is incredible! Well done!
According to the 'net, Cheryl wrote this song in response to how Western nations responded to the genocide in Rawanda (mostly hands-off) vs. the war in the Balkans where they got involved. The Rawanda-centered lyrics "it's in the soul to feel such things; but weak to watch without speaking," and "on why we waited for so late, was there no oil to excavate, no riches in trade for the fate of every person who died in hate..." The pictures behind the performers, though, don't make as much sense in that context - they appear to be a generalization of the massive commitments of US wars in the 20th century mixed with the flag. Unless, it's just to say look we've got the power, but how we use it is the point. Anyway, it's such a great song and the whole presentation is very powerful.

A fine video, but don’t overlook the fact that the lyrics to this song apply to more than the past war in Vietnam and before. They just as much apply to the more recent event in Buffalo as well as the upcoming elections.
We fought to preserve our freedoms that we are never going to give up on preserving for our country and our freedoms that we have fought for and we will fight for as our family members have dies for as we are ready and willing to as well. I have no issues with the B-52 bombing the enemy's of my great country I will die defending if I can! I served as most of my family has in killing those who hate our country and our freedoms we have fought for our past family members and future members I hope to god will fight for. If not our past soldiers have fought and died for nothing and the United States of America is a past
Tottrmandl us Americans have fought for freedom throughout the word, especially ww2 and the fight against communism, so don’t insult this man like this by saying he only fought for imperialism and oil.
How was Vietnam encroaching on American freedoms? The U.S murdered innocent civilians, spent untold billions on a pointless war, the American public were lied to (secret bombing in North Vietnam under Nixon) and in the end abandoned the South anyway leaving untold thousands to be slaughtered by VC. Sorry forgot to mention roughly 42,000 American soldiers dead and over 100,000 injured. For what? American Freedom? You can thank the student movement and Congress for putting a stop to it.
Doesn't matter what you've done. Turn to Jesus. Repent. Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted but ""worldly"" sorrow brings death. Your debts are paid for in full. But you must repent & receive it. It's like GOD put $500,000 in a bank account for you. But you don't believe HIM so you never tap into that account. It goes untouched. What a shame. JESUS. The answer to all problems. That NARROW PATH.
@@hanswurst-lp6fk OK I'm just going to leave this comment here because damn 🤣🤣🤣. I actually wrote it while I was dead tired in bed and probably meant something along the lines of " When the man in black sang he caused the crowd to roar more than Sheryl from heaven." but damn looking back at this now I'm absolutely dead laughing at this comment now that it was pointed out to me 😂

@Vicealmirante Lindermann, there is no lie here. If you research this song you will find that Sheryl Crow originality wrote it, and a few weeks before he died in 2003 Johnny Cash did a cover of this song after talking with Sheryl about the song. Years later, Sheryl decided to honor Johnny Cash by doing an updated version of the song that combined Cash’s cover and her voice singing it - the result is this powerful rendition. She also did an amazing video for this updated combined version which is also on RUclips. When Sheryl performs the updated version live (as she did here) Johnny Cash’s vocals are added from the cover he did before he died (it was in the news that the Johnny Cash Estate gave Sheryl Crow permission to use Cash’s cover in this way). It is amazingly beautiful and emotional to hear and see Sheryl Crow perform this updated version in combination with Cash’s vocals.

Well said!
Takes me back to 15 years old listening to the Sheryl Crow album back in '96. Always loved this song but this version is magic.
I have heard many, many versions of Sheryl singing this... This is the definitive version. PERIOD.
So powerful. I have been in the military for 19 years... anyone who thinks killing is the answer has the question looked at from the wrong angle.
🙌💫
No man prays for peace as fervently as a soldier
I weep every time I hear this song. We have progressed so little as a species...

Amazing performance of an incredible song.
Your one respectable man when you get a cameo in someone else's concert after your death and the crowd still roars to you.

Redemption Day is absolutely Great! My Love and best friend Sweet Sheryl Crow!#### Christian Sibbald 29-8-2018
CHILLS! THAT WAS EPIC!
I've wept for those who suffer long
But how I weep for those who've gone
Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong
But keep on killing
It's in the soul to feel such things
But weak to watch without speaking
Oh what mercy sadness brings
If God be willing
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait
For redemption day
Fire rages in the streets
And swallows everything it meets
It's just an image often seen
On television
Come leaders, come you men of great
Let us hear you pontificate
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we aren't listening
What do you have for us today
Throw us a bone but save the plate
On why we waited til so late
Was there no oil to excavate
No riches in trade for the fate
Of every person who died in hate
Throw us a bone, you men of great
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait
For redemption day
It's buried in the countryside
It's exploding in the shells at night
It's everywhere a baby cries
Freedom
