Most people think this is Johnny's song, with U2 as guests. (The title of the RUclips video suggests that this is the belief here as well "Johnny Cash feat. U2"). This is a testament to how great the song writing is. U2 wrote this with Cash in mind. At the time they did not think they would be able to get him. He had disappeared from popular music and culture (and they did not know why at the time). Major labels had left him. This was before Rick Rubin started recording with Cash (American Recordings.Hurt came later. The original NIN song was not released until 1995) This was the song that kickstarted his revival. Hurt would later launch Johnny back to mass appeal, and at the top of the charts
I would argue Johnny's rendition of Hurt is the most searingly powerful track he ever laid down. Near the end of his life, when he may have been considering his entry into eternity. The video clip shows the deep soul wounding pain of his life's regrets. Perhaps his sins. People he's hurt. Those of us who've been around for some time can relate. Regrets can be a heavy, heavy burden.
Agreed. I was doing some ready recently and found out Johnny’s stipulation for providing this vocal was their permission to cover One for his American Recordings series. And they viewed that as such a complement. Pretty cool.
@herry8488 The song is fantastic. And I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But to me what elevated Hurt as one of the best works of art in American history is when it was paired with the video and you get a visual of him as an old man with his life coming to an close whilst being set in his home with June Carter. And flashing memories from when he was younger as well as the defunct broken down Museum of Cash. Its one of the most moving pieces of art I’ve ever seen in any genre. It just hits different than anything else. I still can’t get through it without tearing up.
I'm always amazed how few Cash or U2 fans made it to the end of this album to hear this gem. "They say they want the Kingdom, but they don't want God in it". So true for so many.
Is from the bible: The lord lend his kingdom to some men, then he sent his servant to charge them, but they didn't pay, instead they killed the servant, as they killed Jesus. It is in the bible, jesus told that story but I don't have the detail of what chapter.

I heard this song for the first time when I was 13 and it changed the course of my life from there on, despite me barely understanding the lyrics back then. I then spent a few decades wandering the world, to "taste and to touch, and to feel as much, as a man can, before he repents". A timeless classic.

This song is a timeless masterpiece. I just recently heard it for the first time. I’m glad that Johnny and June didn’t have to see what is happening to our country today. They’d have a few more verses to add.
My favorite U2 song… and Bono doesn't even sing it! These are the greatest lyrics Bono has ever written and Johnny Cash makes the song perfect. What else can I say other than that this is simply amazing?
+Matthew LaTorre every song the late great man in black touches.... on a scale of 1-10 even if it was a 12 or as low as a 2, JC manages to squeeze out of it at least a 15.. his rendition of personal jesus by depeche mode took on a whole new depth of meaning when cash covered it... ..and hurt... I ball my eyes out every time i play it... that and whisky lullaby are the two saddest songs ever written imho.
The lyrics of The Wanderer tells the story of a preacher who embarks on a personal journey and embraces all that the world offers: Love, knowledge, money, etc, in fact the preacher is Johnny Cash that is looking for God, the lyrics encompass an apocalyptical future, Bono said that both worked in the composition of this song in Dublin, this song was inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the books of The Holy Bible, he said that they had decided to call it the preacher but finally decided to call it the wanderer, this is more than an excellent song, this one is a masterpiece..!.
At the time I was listening to this I was reading the Jon Shannow novels by David Gemmel. It was an amazing fit for the themes and the character in those books.

What most people miss about the meaning of this song, is that it is the final track of U2 most experimental work (Zooropa), which is a jewel in electronic experimentation for all but the last track (The Wanderer): hence, at the end of the whole listen, one is simply overwhelmed by a mesmerizing sense of melancholy and nostalgia. Genius finale by a genius (back then, not certainly - sadly - now ) band.

Bono also wrote 'Love Rescue Me' for Bob Dylan during the Rattle & Hum days. There's a version of Dylan singing the song by himself somewhere in the U2 vault. Dylan's record company wouldn't let him release it on R&H-- But the album version does have him singing a verse or two along with the backing vocals. Bono went through a pretty amazing period from 87-94-- He wrote songs for Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash-- All of three of them were amazing tunes.
Anthony Bolger bono doesn’t want or need credit, the world already knows he’s one of the greatest songwriters ever , definitely the best by far in the last 40 years
Good video with clip and scene of johnny playing music or singing and U2 in the background playing the wander and plus this black and white closer of the video Johnny we miss you and RIP
I always say that Johnny cash is the mysterious stranger in fallout 3. He talks about wandering the capitals of tin, and he has nothing but a bible and a gun. It's a perfect fit.
God bless you Johnny cash we all miss you so much !! The best country singer ever so sad to see all these legends leaving us but they are together in heaven playing sweet music
The love of my life love this son. He attended the U2 concert in L.A. and send me a pic of the video playing this song during intermission. Gosh, being in love hurts! I would never forget my love and always be in love with him. Never thought I would actually feel in love and in pain, I would do anything to have him back. @Dallas Ponder~~Johnny Cash knew God his entire life, for what it's worth. He may have strayed from the path, but he always was aware of the presence. Anyway, those are Bono's lyrics.
As we all know, Bono was mean't to sing this until he heard Johnny's version and immediately handed it over. Johnny a God on earth and now amongst the Gods. RIP fella.
I am impressed with how U2 takes a back seat to Cash in the video. I'm not a country guy other than a couple of the other old outlaws who were contemporaries of Cash, but Cash was simply special up on the pedistal of greats with guys like Dillon. Well done recognizing greatness U2!
When I was younger my dad and mom would bring our family camping .Music was always served , Johnny Cash was always playing on the 8 track ❤ , I was fortunate enough to have seen Johnny Cash in Toronto Canada at Massey Hall, not with my dad 💔 but I'm so blessed to have those memories ❤

I went out walkin'
Through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walkin' under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye
Yeah I went with nothin'
Nothin' but the thought of you
I went wandering
I went drifting through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say, "They want the kingdom"
But they don't want God in it
I went out ridin' down that old eight lane
I passed by a thousand signs
Lookin' for my own name
I went with nothin'
But the thought you'd be there too
Lookin' for you
I went out there in search of experience
To taste and to touch and to feel as much
As a man can before he repents
I went out searching
Looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand
I went out walking with a Bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one
Now Jesus, don't you wait up
Jesus, I'll be home soon
Yeah I went out for the papers, told her, I'd be back by noon
Yeah I left with nothin'
But the thought you'd be there too
Lookin' for you
Yeah I left with nothin'
Nothin' but the thought of you
I went wanderin'
Bono's lyrics reach the depths of humanity
Thanks

A master piece!!!! Great Johnny cash!!!
Love Rescue Me is a classic in its own right. IMHO. Loved all Rattle & Hum: )
Big Johnny Cash fan this is a great song but we must give credit to Bono for writing such a good song
Anthony Bolger bono doesn’t want or need credit, the world already knows he’s one of the greatest songwriters ever , definitely the best by far in the last 40 years
lol
It's also u2 playing in the back round
dion sang the wanderer in the early 60,s-but it was a different song-how rare-listen to it by dion

This has been one my favorite songs since it came out. Just perfect.
Apparently Bono wasn't happy with the sound of his own vocals on this track. Great choice, Cash's voice was perfect for this one
Amazing Jonni Cash. Unforgettable this Man and Voice 🙏💜🎵🎶
Amazing lyrics, amazing song, sung by an amazing man.....The man in black.
Good video with clip and scene of johnny playing music or singing and U2 in the background playing the wander and plus this black and white closer of the video Johnny we miss you and RIP
One of my fav songs from all time, everytime i listen to it is just perfect, this song should be in Fallout4 soundtrack :)
I always say that Johnny cash is the mysterious stranger in fallout 3. He talks about wandering the capitals of tin, and he has nothing but a bible and a gun. It's a perfect fit.
So true!
'The Edge'... an AWESOME guitarist, and he has a voice as well... WELL PLAYED!!!!
If you have someone you actually love, don't let go! Don't let go!
I went out walking
Through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones
Saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking
Under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn
And the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye
Yeah I went with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering
I went drifting
Through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk
Or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say they want the kingdom
But they don't want God in it
I went out riding
Down that old eight lane
I passed by a thousand signs
Looking for my own name
I went with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you
I went out there
In search of experience
To taste and to touch
And to feel as much
As a man can
Before he repents
I went out searching
Looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand
I went out walking
With a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one
Now Jesus, don't you wait up
Jesus, I'll be home soon
Yeah I went out for the papers
Told her I'd be back by noon
Yeah I left with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you
Yeah I left with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering
Eines seiner besten Lieder.... ❤
U2 wrote the perfect song for Cash!
What an honor for u2 to have been graced by Johnny Cash, I hope they realized it...
"Jesus i'll be home soon" Glad he found God in time
Allahu Akhbar!
lolz
@Dallas Ponder~~Johnny Cash knew God his entire life, for what it's worth. He may have strayed from the path, but he always was aware of the presence. Anyway, those are Bono's lyrics.

Jajaja. If you can't understand the true meaning...ask your shepherd jaja
As we all know, Bono was mean't to sing this until he heard Johnny's version and immediately handed it over. Johnny a God on earth and now amongst the Gods. RIP fella.
one of my favorites from one great man and another band
I am impressed with how U2 takes a back seat to Cash in the video. I'm not a country guy other than a couple of the other old outlaws who were contemporaries of Cash, but Cash was simply special up on the pedistal of greats with guys like Dillon. Well done recognizing greatness U2!
Fantastic Johnny Cash legend - U2 - Legends
I just listened to U2 Zooropa Album and i forgot about this classic what a gem . RIP Mr Cash .
Loved It! Been a fan of Johnny Cash and can't believe it's the first time I've heard this song!
Great song, it just popped into my head and haven't heard it in more than 10 years! So had to look it up, missing 90s nostalgia you see 😢
Some magnet in his voice. RIP Johny Cash
Gosh darn I thought nobody would listen to this gem.
What a great song! Perfect compilation with JC! At the end Bono nails those high notes like the Boshe is. Brings chills and thrills to my soul!
Hard to think the world is still alive without Johnny cash
A fenti világban énekel Jézusnak,! ✝️🎸😍
Song is thousands of years ahead of it's time I have listened to this song at least a hundred times HEARD back in 1993 still like more than ever
Actually this song goes so deep in so many ways. The truth! Johnny is in Heaven with Jesus.
👍👍✝️🎸🕊️😍
shdwban, guess what. Those of us who believe will meet Johnny one day.
What a Gem!
Stunning hypnotic beat to this song, showcases Johnny Cash's consumate talent made all the more poignant by the clips from his career. Thanks for posting.
