Also notice how the only two Black women are presented in the film (one as aggressive and the other as effectively "can't get right"). So much to unpack here.

The wildest part of this particular white savior film is the fact that it doesn’t even pretend like it isn’t a white savior film. While it has been some time since I’ve seen the Blind Side, I can’t recall any moments where the black characters were given any autonomy or positive portrayals.They treat Michael Oher like he’s some helpless side character in his own story, and when they’re not doing that, they’re demonizing the rest of the black cast. Big Tony kicks Michael out of his house, his neglectful, drug-addicted mother abandons him, and the NCAA representative convinces him that the only people who’ve ever cared for him only did so for ulterior motives. At least other white savior films aren’t afraid of giving people of color some dignity every once in a while just to establish some plausible deniability about their intentions. The Blind Side cannot even bear the thought of depicting black people as anything other than helpless individuals dependent on white people for protection.

This movie is horrible. I hated how they portrayed Michael. Michael was a whole D1 prospect before he even met that family lol. He was going to the league with or without them. He is a good football player and 6'7" 330 lol. They would have found him.

The wildest part of this particular white savior film is the fact that it doesn’t even pretend like it isn’t a white savior film. While it has been some time since I’ve seen the Blind Side, I can’t recall any moments where the black characters were given any autonomy or positive portrayals.They treat Michael Oher like he’s some helpless side character in his own story, and when they’re not doing that, they’re demonizing the rest of the black cast. Big Tony kicks Michael out of his house, his neglectful, drug-addicted mother abandons him, and the NCAA representative convinces him that the only people who’ve ever cared for him only did so for ulterior motives. At least other white savior films aren’t afraid of giving people of color some dignity every once in a while just to establish some plausible deniability about their intentions. The Blind Side cannot even bear the thought of depicting black people as anything other than helpless individuals dependent on white people for protection.
