@@TemperedMedia we probably would've gotten a more action and story based/character driven film with a higher focus on the directoral vision that had next to nothing to do with the games, but would've made for a unique sci-fi-punk film that would've probably flopped regardless, but would've been better remembered as a genuinely unique/odd take on the source material rather than being seen as a joke that's best enjoyment is watching it ironically.

I exactly have the same opinion of this movie as Mark: not groundbreaking, but delivered on expectations, no matter as a NES era fan or modern one. The biggest repproach I'd have is how Illumination mostly used Magikoopa as comic relief and then kind of forgot about him along the way and how they got Luigi jailed in Bowser's fortress early on, not really giving him time to develop his character from pushover to badass. But it was an engaging watch in the action department, for sure.

If I was only aloud to give one problem with the 1993 film, even as difficult as that may sound, I could do it. The one biggest problem with it is that it does not know or show where it goes. It looks like an adult film but does not go there. It is expected to be a kids’ film but does not go there. It is advertised as a video game film but goes way far away from that. It is introduced as a dinosaur story but is humanoid. Many think that Nintendo endorsed it. Well, they kinda just said, “Whatever. We won’t help or even care.” There you have it. The 1993 film was unique because it was built to be entertaining with no destination whatsoever. 😉

It always sucks when a movie that was initially intended to be for more mature audiences (as the 1993 film was) is abruptly redone to appeal more to kids, not only because the result fails to fully satisfy any audience, but because you can tell there's a substantially better film buried underneath what you're watching that will never get rescued.

About the casting of movie stars vs voice actors, two simple solutions:
    - Cynical for cynical, if movie studios want to have famous movie stars do the promotion, just pay them to do the promotion and keep them out of the movie (OK, maybe just give them small roles).
    - Valorise the voice actors. Put something like "with legendary voice actor Nancy Cartwright", make them do the promotion of the movie (and don't tell me that an interview with a voice actor who can make the voices of multiple famous characters on camera is less interesting than having Chris Pratt regurgitating promotional talking points.

I saw the original SMB movie when it hit theaters and holy cow did that movie spoil any chances for enjoyment, it was constant annoyance about how almost any of it could possibly relate to the game characters. There were little bits here and there, but it really showed how confused everything was, just baffling. It's also one of the reasons I haven't seen the 2023 version, the 1993 version was really that bad that it spoiled any future movies, regardless of whether they're any good.

I do understand your criticisms about The Super Mario Bros. Movie. I loved it, but the debate around voice acting is pretty valid. And yes, it's not a groundbreaking movie or anything (story-wise, at least), but it felt incredible to see the world of Mario on the bug screen.

I always thought that they never understood it since they were old at the time...... Turns out Even in the 90s, they still refuse to stick to the source material.
Why is that do difficult for Hollywood to do?

In Japan, it's the reverse for voice actors: they're considered as stars in their own right, even having side careers as pop idols. It's so strange to me why the same profession is so dismissed in the west. Their delivery is the heart and soul of an animated project, yet the industry sees it as a second fiddle function forever. You can perfectly see how it matters in the later seasons of the Real GhostBusters, as Lorenzo Music no longer voices Venkman. It was one of the many reasons for this cartoon's downfall...

You would have literally had people stabbing their eardrums in the first 5 minutes of the movie if they had to hear Charles Martinet speak continuously for 90 minutes.

Not to forget Charles Martinet isn't exactly a youth anymore (almost 70 as of now), so asking a peppy performance out of him for the length of a feature movie would be quite unrealistic, anyway. Imagine all the missed takes the poor man would also have to endure...

Voice Actors aren't abused animals in the West, that's purely a falsity put into place by said voice actors to try and get everyone to feel bad for them. Just because they aren't as widely recognized as live-action Movie/TV stars, does NOT mean they are not treated well or are played off.
In fact, in recent years, some big Voice Actors have been showing just how greedy they are. Bayonetta's original VA is a great example, or how about Bender's VA? Literally rallying the anger in fans to try and get more of a paycheck. It's insanity when voice actors get to sit inside an air conditioned studio for usually 1-2 weeks TOPS for an ENTIRE SPEAKING ROLE in a movie/tv show/video game, and somehow they're mistreated and deserve everyone jumping through hoops for them?

My point mostly pertains to the ones Mark talked about in the video. Some Voice Actors have trademark voices and should be perceived as stars in their own right. Mark Hamill, for example, deserves all the props for his performances whereas it's not his initial business.
The voice actors you refer to are entitled divas with not much of a talent for role composition, or a memorable prosody.
I watch most of my animation subbed, as I can't stand half hearted and deja entendu English dubbing performances. After a while, it's a grind to listen to the same guys, talking like they're themselves in front of the vending machine. The Japanese just know how to make voice acting stay fresh...

I didn't love the new Mario flick but I thought Keegan key was great. I would have never guessed it was him. I didn't think anyone did a bad job with voice acting but the story itself was just kinda boring. The animation was great though.
