God that whole scene with Roger & the lawyer was awesome. Roger looked like he was going to swallow his tongue when he couldn't get his own way! Did he really think responsible Liz wouldn't make arrangements knowing how his no account butt would behave? She'd be penniless by time she got out of the hospital! He ran through his own inheritance in no time after all. He wouldn't think twice about spending hers. I notice Carolyn was his "kitten" until she couldn't be manipulated. Everybody is just a chess piece to him in his grand scheme to glorify himself.
Nancy Barrett does a fantastic job as Carolyn. I think she is a little underrapreciated. I don't think I've ever see her give a bad performance and this episode was a fine example. The plot line of Liz' sickness was a good opportunity for her to step forward and shine.
I agree she is acted well, but she's totally indecisive and it doesn't change within this arc. I honestly think Vicky would make a much better head of the house
I like the scene where Carolyn explains the revolution in her feelings for David. To someone who has only seen the post-Barnabas episodes, it's a little disconcerting to see Carolyn's (and Roger's) remarkably harsh treatment of the lad in these earlier episodes. Doesn't it seem odd to anyone that at least some of the members of the family wouldn't be staying down in Boston while Elizabeth is in the hospital? Her lawyer goes to see her but her family doesn't?
The answer is, it's a TV show. Joan Bennett is on one of her many long vacations, like when Cassandra makes her fall into a death-like sleep, or when Judith is sent to the asylum by Greg Trask. Nothing is happening at the hospital, Liz is just lying there sleeping. They can't show people at her bedside, because she's on vacation. The action and drama are at Collinwood, so that's why we're there. When one actor is gone, the others pick up the slack. Joan Bennett gets back from vacation right as this story line ends, just in time for the Jason McGuire story.
atlantic 11561 No, that was Vicky who spoke. Watch the moment carefully again, you'll see. And you'll hear Vicky's voice. Geez, they're not THAT bad! LOL.
what i find very interesting......think about this.... is tthat they (the camera guys) never show the wall to the right of the foyer door where the portrait of barnabas collins hangs later on. in all the episodes up to this point, the camera angle barely shows a mirror and some sort of armor. only twice in 169 shows.hmmm, only when willie loomis obsesses over the collins family jewels does the camera focus on the portrait of barnabas. the genius of dan curtis.

kenda ellsworth Granted, the séance was a drastic measure, but look, police departments and the Federal government have both used psychics as well as other resources (including hypnosis and even telekinesis) to solve a host of cold cases. Thank God that our existence is not completely ruled by science and rationalism, for it would be a very bleak and hopeless society, indeed.

Thomas Leary Agreed, but there is a school of thought dominated by militant scientists that has emerged in recent years. To me, they are just as extreme as the militant evangelicals.

Carolyn Stoddard at her very best!
So Dr. Freeloader will do his hocus pocus and unleash the hell hounds....
+Sparky # He admitted it outright.
Dr. free loader?? I do not think he is staying at Collinwood!
Kind of like CERN

Ditto. And she just gets better and better throughout the series.

buddy51 ... I was just about to mention "how come nobody's going to see her in Boston?" but then they addressed the reason why not in this episode.
Carolyn said "Hello, Dr. Guthrie" to Vicky as she came into the drawing room.

Iain Davies-Hayle Thanks, Iain, you were right! That WOULD have been cause for drastic review (and reprimand) by the producers! :D

Did anyone notice the clock on Rogers mantle said 2:30? I thought it was late night waiting for David to sleep.
Continuity is so important. Someone should have caught that one.
Maybe he forgot to wind it. (Yes, we used to have to do that then!)
Carolyn isn't a "wartime consigliere"!!!!
I'm so confuuuuuuused!
There, there, Barbarino.
Get on with it!! Lol
"argue me out of it?" Is that correct English ?
