Yes I can imagine, knowing how a car engine works would be an advantage when it comes to understanding the mechanism of a lock, you will also have the additional advantage of both being able to both help someone who has lost their keys to their motor and repair their motor 😂😎 nice one 👍

In your area, do you need a certificate of some sort to work as a locksmith (get hired by people) or "just" the skills of the profession?
Hey! In the UK we just need the skills to trade as a locksmith if you are self employed, you can just get started! If you work for another company they might ask you to do a course but its not always the case. I think people worry too much about a certificate - the most important thing is your skills, knowledge and experience
It's cool watching locksmiths in other countries. Here in America every state is different as far as locksmith licensing. In Virginia I have to take the department of criminal justices required training, which is 16 hours of class, fingerprinting, and background check. Definitely not allowed to be a felon in alot of states to be a locksmith.
@@tonysudano778 did you ever start taking the course? I’m in Texas and gotta deal with a few hoops just to start also. 2 years of FT locksmith apprenticeship or 1 year school + 1 year ft employment. Being as I have a full time job now I’m currently looking for option 2 and going to school. Been looking at schools for awhile now, the ones that pop up on Google apparently are not very good and have outdated material.

Hi Stuart, most of our members are from the States that's why it's in dollars but the course was filmed in the UK. The principles are the same for all cars worldwide

Hi, I am looking to train to become a locksmith. I have zero experience and was going to buy the 20 piece training set with practice locks from Amazon. It's only £20, I was wondering if you would recommend a set like that for a beginner or would such a cheap set be a waste of money?

@@shenayabarlow1799 They're neat to be able to see the insides working, but they're tolerances are so bad that you can open them with just about anything. It's best to get a legit practice lock from Sparrows or the equivalent.
@@iyeetsecurity922 I'm a bit late to the party. I've been picking as a hobbyist for a few years now. The best locks to practice on are locks that are commonly used. I'd ask for people's old locks, wether they be cylinders, padlocks, etc I'll have a go for a bit of practice. If you know what lock is in your own front door then order another online of the same model for practice. Also if you break a pick inside, don't throw it away. Use that as practice for using a dragging pick. This could net you practice pulling something back out. Good amount of times someone may just break their key in their lock, you can use the right pick to pull the key out, put it just back in so it's lifting the correct pins and use the head of the snapped key to turn the barrel to open the lock. Also useful if you break a pick in a customers lock as you can't just be leaving it in there lol. Though tbh I'd imagine if one has a habit of breaking their picks they probably shouldn't set up as a locksmith just yet 😅
Also with locksmiths I've met it seems that it's not all picking locks. I've seen one put air-bags in a car door, blow up the bags to create a gap in the door and feed a wire through to hook the handle on the inside of the car door, no picking required! Some are very intuitive 😅😁
Though I'm just a hobbyist with minimal experience in the grand scheme of things lol and with a name like "Iyeet Security" it may be you're a pro locksmith and this is a r/Don'tYouKnowWhoIAm moment 😅

is it possible to become even a mediocre locksmith on your own? Nothing advanced just cars and doors....This would help me because I also lock myself out.
Hi Donavin, sure you can get started on the domestic side of locksmithing really fast and with little budget. If you want to do cars, I would consider this to be more advanced as you will need to invest a lot of time and money into it. Automotive locksmithing is a category all on its own. Alot of locksmiths don't do anything but Automotive locksmithing. The world of transponder keys is very vast. Cars have been using transponder ls since 1995. Ford started using them in 1996. Then BMW, Mercedes, audi, vw, and Porsche are tough cars to unlock and make keys too. Lexus are tough cars. Even Ford and Chevy use high security laser cut keys now. The transponders get more advanced every year and more are going to high security keys.
Honda uses the hon66 keyway. They've been using it since like 2003. You'll do Hondas all the time. The locks are poorly designed and are constantly failing. You'll get calls all the time for broken Honda keys, ignitions that don't work, dock locks jammed up. Automotive locksmiths are always doing High security Honda keys and lock replacements. Then not to mention Chrysler, dodge and jeep keys. They all use expensive remote head keys and pin codes.
If your in America look up lockmasters pure auto classes. They have key generation and transponder classes. They are probably the best Automotive locksmith class in all of the USA. There in Kentucky but hold seminars everywhere in the country.
Key generation covers using lishi picks, ez readers, cobra readers, scopes to look into locks, impressioning. Then the transponder class covers all the cars you can do. There will be some cars you can't do. Range rovers are tough to unlock and make keys too. Not impossible bur definitely alot harder than a Ford 8 cut.
Pure auto by lockmasters is hands down the best Automotive locksmith class in all of the USA.
As an Automotive locksmith You'll need a ztool auto unlock kit, definitely some lishi picks, a key programmer or 2, a high security laser key cutter, and a key machine you can use to originate keys from code.

What do you do when a customer wants a key replaced or news locks etc whike your on the job amd you dont have the equipment yet
As you don’t have the equipment to do the job, you could pass the job on to another locksmith for some commission.
I'm a 50 yr old Female, and I can rekey some locks, I thought to myself, why not learn how to be a locksmith? Am I crazy? I could then teach my Son and we could possibly do something Amazing!

Hello, I cant really comment on this as ive not attended either course. The best training you could get would be out on the road with a locksmith attending real jobs. Maybe offer to do this for free to get some knowledge!

As I honestly would do it if it means improving my chances of full time employment as one. As I'm not very good at the joinery side of the job for example.

@@locksmithingsecrets thanks for your reply 🙏 but in my original comment I've deleted out of inbarressment I guess 🤷♂️ sorry lol, which I will put in a nut shell for you now lol I grew up in a rough bit of Birmingham and some of the friends I grew up with were from poorer backgrounds than me so had to steel for survival, and I never really took part in there criminal activity there skills of picking locks always fascinating me so I got some of my first lessons from them, anyway time went on and I became a drug addict, but have been clean for many years and started it as a hobby, I have tools brought for me as gifts and still have the ones I made myself with spring metal from old lawn mower pul starters. Any way I've got quite good at the picking side of things, but do have a small criminal record, no stealing on it just little things like possession of small amounts of drugs and breach of the peace. So my biggest worry is that if the truth comes out that I was once a addict and I have a small record no one will give me a chance and I believe truth is the best policy. But honestly I really am quite good at it and have got friends and neighbours back into their sheds, garages and even house's when they have lost their keys. Sorry,, that was some size of nutshell 😂 but thanks for the encouragement and I really enjoyed your story and wish you all the best 👍
@@buskingkarma2503 At the moment you don't need a licence to be a locksmith in the Uk so starting your own business would be the best bet as you won't need to worry about working for another company and providing a CRB check. I've never seen anyone losing there car because they lost their key. All's you need is the vin number and you can have a key made.
