Chained Echoes - Review [Do NOT miss out on this instant classic RPG!]

- Chained Echoes is a game that I initially had no plans to play. In late 2022, I was busy with a load of other titles, and couldn’t see myself fitting it in. But that was when everybody on the planet wouldn’t stop talking about it, which lead to a serious case of FOMO. Yup, I was not about to miss out on this one, and I am so glad I didn’t, because Chained Echoes, was by far, the surprise packet of the year.
Chained Echoes is inspired, and pays clear tribute to the games we loved in the past, such as Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Xenogears. From the visuals to the combat, to the music, to the story beats, to the mechanics. It’s almost as if this game was specifically tailored to me. And this is what makes Chained Echoes so easy to recommend, to every JRPG fan of the 90s and early 2000s.

Behind Elden Ring, this was the best RPG last year hands down! With RPGs like Chained Echoes, Ara Fell, CrossCode, Sea of Stars, etc. can we all agree that Retro-style RPGs are here to stay?
So excited for more of these to come!
Theyre better written than most AAA games these days
I bought this and I am really looking forward to trying this game. You said a lot of great things about it and it seems like an incredible indie JRPG.
You know your rpgs if you have a dq11 picture! That was one of the best RPGs I’ve played in a loooong time. One of my all time favourites actually, and I’ve played a lot of them! As I’m sure you have as well. Haha I just had to leave a comment, because it always makes me happy when people like dq11
This game was an unexpected gem! I really loved it and I agree one of the best releases of 2022.
Agreed!
As someone who is finally getting into more indy titles and also loved this game, if you missed on CrossCode give that one a look. You'll probably really enjoy it.
Awesome video! I haven’t finished it yet, but you’ve already sold me on it when listing those games that you compared it to! 😂. I’m definitely playing this later! Thanks for sharing ! Suikoden is AMAZING and any comparisons to be drawn there has me sold big time. Also at 3:40 you were right - totally a suikoden vibe there! Whenever they play moonlit night before the big battles. Reminds me of Nina talking to flik
Thanks mate! So you started it? Keep going with it! So much fun!
@@HellFireRPGs thanks! I’m going to tonight! I also had to go so I didn’t finish the review (in case your analytics say someone left the video halfway through- I just had to let you know it’s only because I had to leave 😆, because otherwise I was enjoying the review a lot!) hard to watch videos on the go, but commenting isn’t so difficult. so yes, later on I’m going to finish the review and check the game out! Sorry for the long comment!
Haha, all good. Thanks for watching :)
I was feelin it pretty good I liked the style, the graphics, and the setting and then I saw it..... flipping.....turtle..... racing. I'm sold.
Can't go wrong with turtle racing!
Great review, definitely going to pick this one up :)
Can't believe this gem was $25. Strong Chrono & Secret of Mana vibes.
Great review!
This is probably the fourth review of this game that I have seen, and you went far more indepth than any of the others (the others hadn't even mentioned my biggest selling point in a game - a developing HQ).
So, looks like you've sold me on this one.
Thanks mate! I think you would love it! Deinfiely give it a go and let me know what you think. The HQ and recruiting was also great! No where near Suikoden level, though
I've been waiting for this Review!!
Took me a while, but so glad that I played it! :😀
They added the tutorial review section on the last update for PC at least
Ah, good to hear
the art style isnt my cup of tea. but the story and ost are... and they are the most important for me for a jrpg before the gameplay. And this game is really good. Would love for a sequel.
Thank you for this :) I now have something to buy in the turn based jrpg space.
Get on it!
Looks nobody noticed about portraits. Yes. It's not tactical rpg and this is reason but faces remind also FFTactics
This game was a solid 9/10 for me. Definitely the best RPG I played in 2023.
Glad you made review, because in last couple months I didn't have much free time to check which game came out and if it's good Don't know when I'll play it,but definitely I will play this game!
Thanks. Definitely should be made a priority.
Amazing game, I'm currently playing it
I'm about to finish act 3
My friends have tried to change my mind on turn based/jrpg style games for a long time to no avail. But after my brother and one of my best friends played chained echoes they finally convinced me to give it a shot.
This was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had with a game in a long time. It had the perfect pacing, enough changes/innovations to the jrpg formula, gorgeous art, and that amazing soundtrack to keep me playing.
But what I haven’t enjoyed in a game in so long is a story that kept me hooked. I could see so many amazing influences (eg, berserk, fma, etc.) from media I love in the story that kept me so engaged. It also just did a great job at not only providing an exciting narrative but also explored some deep themes.
I give this CE a 10/10-a gaming experience I haven’t felt in such a long time
I'm trying to decide if I should buy this game and this was really cool to read man thanks
@@aeriagloris4211 hope my experience helps you decide. You’ll love the game!
Great review I agree with everything said. Game blew me away. I like you provided the turtle racing segment with the metal music but offered no comment on it - totally self explanatory!
Words can't do it justice :D
I'm looking forward to this game too. Thank you for covering it. I'm surprised it was pretty much made by one person over 7 years of work. Usually when development takes that long, it just doesn't ever get finished.
Yeah, absolutely crazy! He did such a great job 👏
The one thing I don't really like are the exploration zones. Not the dungeons they are good. Those big areas between two cities/dungeons/next story event are too big for me and I end up getting lost. But I forgot there was a map...like you said there should be something to check the tutorials again :P
Haha without the map, yeah it would be difficult to navigate:)
this is a masterpiece
What would you recommend, sea of stars, chained echoes or crosscode?
Chained echoes!!
Someone get this dude some cough syrup.
I like my cough just the way it is!
Hearing so much great stuff about this game! Hope to play soon. If it really scratches the Xenogears itch a bit that will be quite something, as nothing has managed it for a long, long time.
Story isn't quiet up there with xenogears, but everything else is better!
I like your videos but it feels like you are putting on a radio voice for this one …
I didn’t love it. The art style and the dialogue were lacking. The battle system was ok at first but got old quick. Sea of Stars is more my cup of tea.
Overdrive system ruins this game. Limiting you ability to actually play the game, not to mention the horrendous RNG and the fact that if you hit overheat you've lost (thanks RNG BS) severely cripples this game. I don't know how this gets so much praise.
100% game looks visually beautiful but overdrive system is just a5s
Yep, this game is like one helluva love letter to the classics. It's like Xenogears went and had a hot wet sexy three way with Final Fantasy VI and Suikoden 1 & 2 (four way, sue me).
Five way. Chrono Trigger is also under the sheets.
Game is an unabalanced slog.
I agree. I like the ideas but not the execution. It's very unbalanced like you say, class/skill system to me is a chore that isn't rewarding, overdrive is a cool idea but actively detracts from doing strategies and makes you pick pointless things to do, and I found the writing to be below average. Overall, interesting ideas that weren't done very well in my opinion and made the experience not fun.
